And Sisko did call DS9 the most valuable piece of real estate in the Alpha Quadrant. It is most definitely a town in that respect. And of course the “docking ring” stands in for stables and liveries for the steeds and carriages (i.e. runabouts and ships).
Deep space nine is a treasure to Star Trek that will stay with us forever.
DS9 had amazing writing. Some of the best writing on television. They tackled hard-hitting issues in a way that was perfect. I especially loved the Nog storyline. I think our Wounded warriors could relate a lot to him. I also loved the episode where they all saved Vic from the gangsters when the program went rogue. So many great episodes.
I couldn't agree more. I had such fond memories of DS9 growing up. I loved Star Trek in general but DS9 always appealed to me more. I think because it was different to others. It wasn't based on a starship, the obscure ferengi which were established in TNG were fleshed out as part of the cast, and the stations design was based on an aliens design that wasn't starfleet.
It was like experiencing a part of the star trek universe that we don't always see from the stock standard starship perspective. Plus the stories were brilliant and characters most lovable.
I loved the development of Bashir's and Obrian's friendship. DS9 is the best Star Trek show ever!!
@@kri249 I love the different take on Starfleet too. The gritty morally gray characters and stories showed how people live on the frontier. The Federation is far enough away that the officers on DS9 had to solve their own problems their own way with non-Federation people. I love DS9 BECAUSE of how gray it was morally, and how diverse the cast was. They really became a family by the end

Remember when they tripped a Cardassian security system, designed to stop its former commander from surrendering to a Bajoran slave uprising, which amongst other episodes, draws attention to the fact Star Fleet was upgrading the station.
I had the opportunity to visit the DS9 set while they were shooting a scene on the Promenade. Another interesting fact (to me anyway): the actors walk very slowly when shooting scenes on the Promenade. It doesn't appear that way on screen but when you're watching them in person, it was surprising.
One of my favourite DS9 Easter Eggs:
While Nana Visitor was dating Alexander Siddig, he introduced her to a comedy show called "One Foot In the Grave"
The cast and crew became a fan of the show and started introducing Victor Meldrew's catchphrase of "I do not believe it!" anywhere they could cram it in, but apparently only one actually made it on-air in the episode "Tribunal"
I always imagine that even though Starfleet officers don't get paid, ones stationed in places where money is used probably receive some kind of stipend in Federation Credits. This theory goes hand-in-hand with the implication that money is not used on core worlds of the Federation, but is used on the frontiers. As we saw in TNG, Dr. Crusher purchased a bolt of cloth at Farpoint and "charges it to her account on the Enterprise."
I know Gene Roddenberry insisted that the Federation didn't have money, but that's nonsense. Nog taught us all that the Great Material Continuum keeps the galaxy moving and Nog would never give up a bum steer.

They should have took the time to explain it all. But then again, perhaps they knew it couldn't be explained. Essentially the Federation would have to be "printing money"for the crew. If that's the case, then the money really has no value. I suppose the Federation could compensate the Ferengi in some way when they go to exchange Federation credits, but this is never explained. In a universe of essentially free energy. why would even the Ferengi need money?
The invention of replicators by TNG (and to a lesser extent, synthesizers in TOS and ENT) essentially made a currency based economy obsolete - who would deal with going to Wal-Mart, IKEA or Target for clothes, food, furniture, etc. when you could have a nearly magical device installed in your house that can create all of those things from thin air for free? Not having to grind your life away at a thankless dead end job just to afford the basic necessities of life would mean everyone would not only have the time to pursue their passions, but also have access to all of the base materials they need to fulfill them without worrying about affording them.
As far as interactions with other societies that still use currency, my understanding is Starfleet "sells" its services and some technology in exchange for the local currency, then gives its personnel a stipend (as you said) to live comfortably within that society. I remember reading somewhere that they get the local economic equivalent of "middle class wages", just enough to be comfortable without destabilizing the economy. In modern Earth terms, they'd be able to afford a decent car, a good apartment or small house and a nice smartphone, but they wouldn't be tearing down the road in a Porche from a $5 million McMansion while talking on the latest $2,000 iPhone studded in diamonds.
I always figured that they don't have physical money, just that plain old digital cash.
I feel like Federation does have trade deals and would have some sort of stockpile of currency that they would dole out to the officers so they could spend time outside the Federation. But yeah, that's having your cake and eating it too.
Last time I was this early to a video, DS9 still orbited Bajor.

While the ATM is never referenced on screen, Mike Okuda did point it out, and showed it close up, during a walk through of the Promenade in one of the “Making of” documentaries. It’s worth noting that unlike the sets for the Enterprise D, all of the sets for DS9 were built to feature film quality just in case they were needed for movies.

There was a time in life when I cracked a joke or two about "Star Trek nerds." But then I started watching a lot of BBC America after I got into Doctor Who, and they were airing TNG reruns all the time. I would usually leave it on as background noise until "Chain of Command" caught my attention one day, and I started actually watching when the show was on and finished the series on Netflix at some point. Naturally, I eventually moved on to DS9, and my God it was glorious. TNG was great, but DS9 is one of the best shows I've ever seen. It was outstanding. It started stronger in early going, and for 3 straight seasons from 4 through 6, it rarely dipped below a B+ level of quality. It's an absolute triumph of the sci fi genre, and we're lucky to have it. I don't know which Trek show is the best Star Trek (though I do know it's definitely not Voyager and ppl who claim otherwise are delusional), but DS9 is by far the best general TV show of the bunch.
to me it was good but not as good as an other show i was watching at the time and i mean babylon 5, definitely worth checking it out !
Currently rewatching DS9 I’m on S4 E7 and it is def the most integrated star trek series - such a different perspective and detail into so many lives of the different species and cultures. its a very rich and rewarding experience.
STDS9 is one of the best Star Trek Shows. Even better than TNG and every old Trek show. I just want to finish VOY and Enterprise so I can rewacht it.
I like how Star Trek online depicted DS9s future, Kira did become Vedik but they found the Vedik from season 1 and then Kira Joined Starfleet And was commissioned as Captain and took command of the station and by extension the Defiant, quark was still running his bar and Morn the best character would sit and regal everyone with his amazing tales, man what a mouth on that guy
Let's not forget that Nog became a captain of his own ship, Odo commands the Dominion Fleets.

I've never read any of the DS9 novels, but I think you might be confusing the term Vedik and Kai. A Vedik is like a priest, while the Kai is like the pope.
Sounds to me like you may have meant that they found Kai Opaka; she was Kai in the first season but was killed and immediately resurrected on some stinking rock in the Gamma Quadrant full of hate-filled soldiers who kept killing each other off and resurrecting for all of eternity. But none of them could leave or they'd die permanently, so Opaka decided to stay and try to negotiate a peace between the factions. Sisko and Kira told everyone back home that Opaka was dead, and eventually Vedik Wynn became the new Kai.
Bashir had several long-term things that he wanted to fix but never got around to it by the end of the series - the Blight (from the episode The Quickening), the Jem'Hedar dependence on ketracel white, and this lovely little problem of getting Opaka safely off the cruddy little moon she was stranded on. I guess in the novels Julian must have figured out this one, at least.
TNG, Voyager & Enterprise all had open lifts that dropped between levels in Engineering & was a few scenes where we see the crew using them.

Which has an odd sort of synchronicity with Garak's Tailor Shop, seeing as how Garak was an actual Obsidian Order spy exiled to DS9.

I'm going back through DS9 now. I introduced my wife to it and it has a special place in our hearts. We didn't know any of these things. It's really neat to know our fave Star Trek series still has lots of hidden gems in it.
Here's something you might not have known, at least you didn't mention it: The stardates are usually just made up numbers the team uses to indicate passing time with the first year of TNG begining at 41XXX and incrementing by 1000 over the course of each season the show was being produced. It's no secret that they didn't air in sequence, sometimes causing impossible overlaps in events within the same series.
The first station log of DS9 entered by the then Commander Sisko was 46379.1. That puts it a less than a week after the first log entry used in "Chain of Command, Part 2" (at 46360.8). So them interacting with the DS9 cast would have made little sense unless it was planned for them to be at Terok Nor just before the Cardassian withdrawal. Using stardates would also mean that the Enterprise officially was at DS9 a total of three times: The beginning of "Emissary", the end of "Emissary" and a few days after the events of the DS9 episode "The Passenger" when the events of "Birthright, Part 1" occurred.
Weren’t the elevators beside the warp cores of Enterprise D and Voyager real too? Not turbolifts though, I suppose?

Yep, all of those had actual working lifts on their sets. You see at least a couple uses in each show of the lift in question.

I guess an ATM makes sense...I always just figured the Federation may not use money within it's borders but it had latinum or the like to trade with other powers and it was giving the DS9 crew an allowance of sorts so they could live in DS9.

Yeah they get a per deium of Latinum when out on the frontier or non federation worlds on fed business. Enough to enjoy them self but not enough to become a problem
I kinda assumed they would get “credits” and those credits would be useable to purchase latinum. Kinda like STO’s version but more economic and less game currency-ish

My favorite series of all time, I hope the "next generation" born after year 2000, gets to experience the joy and entertainment this kind of writing and quality brings to sci fi.
Sorry to be 'that guy', but about Number 7: A few tidbits you missed out was 'Diva Droid Corporation' and the 'Jupiter Mining Corporation', both Easter Eggs from 'Red Dwarf', you also have 'Spacely Sprockets', an Easter Egg from 'The Jetsons' and Tom Servo's Used Robots is an easter egg from 'MST3K'... I'm gonna stop there but, yeah, the directory is full of easter eggs. (Worst kept secret ever, I know)

Also Tom Servo's Used Robots, an MST3K reference, Spacely's Sprockets, from the Jetsons, and Sirius Cybernetics and Milliways, from The Hitchhikers Guide.
In the 2nd part of the pilot episode, they managed to get a "warp field" around the WHOLE station to move it close to the wormhole, STAKING it's claim on it. It almost instantly went from being in the middle of nowhere to the MOST important place in the Alpha Quadrant. To their date, it was probably the LARGEST object to obtain warp speed too. I love DS9!
That wasn't a warp field, at least not the same as ships use. And, it didn't achieve warp speed. They generated a "mass reduction field" (think Mass Effect) using the shield systems. This allowed them to move the station out of Bajor's orbit using thruster power without tearing the station apart.
can you imagine the fees (at least for non-Ferengi) charged in a Ferengi banking system (including to use its ATMs)?
No doubt there is a "pressing charge" if you want your Latium "gold pressed"!

(almost to the level that, they’re looking like they’re overcompensating for lack of those eggs and acknowledgment in CBS’s other current Trek series)... there’s just too many homages and the motivations for those homages, for which a “10 List”, May be appropriate.

Mike Okuda was a big fan of Buckaroo Banzai. Yoyodyne was something he would put in as an in-joke.
Also of quite a few anime shows like "the dirty pair" (they show up in some of his star charts).
I like the pocket books that had the station continuing on as an outpost. Kira became the station commander, Ro Karen joined as head of security. Eventually they were folded into Star Fleet, Kira became a Captain (Defiant), Laren a commander. Kira would went on to become Kai and raised a family at some point. The books were good.

I generally dislike the Cardassian aesthetic, think their ships are ugly, architecture is ugly, even their clothing, but for some reason DS9 (or Terok Nor) designs just somehow works for me. I think it's the circular/globe nature of the structure, the rings around the centre, the pylons forming the shape and the command centre at the dead centre, kind of like it's own little universe. The lighting as well I think played a big role in making it feel like a warm place, just look at what they did with the same set when they redressed and lit it for flashbacks during the occupation or on Empok Nor.

And it’s not just that it’s a good design while keeping to a Cardassian aesthetic, it’s a good design for a space station in general, especially compared to some of the starfleet designs. The “Yorktown” station in the last JJ-verse film was especially bad, a massive habitable sphere. They’d have to fill that entire volume with air, which is insanely inefficient given (like a planet) most of the sphere is miles up. And if it’s attacked the whole place would decompress. DS9’s rings are really well thought out.
I don't think the Cardassians are meant to be particularly pleasing to the eye. After all, they are space Nazis!
That station interior design has kept the show from looking dated unlike the Enterprise set design of TNG.
While DS9 looks great, I always felt the inward facing pylons should have been facing outward, from a practical sense. Otherwise the ships get a bit close together.
deep space nine is probably one of the prettiest space stations ever done in scifi. hard to believe this was a mining base and not some luxury space hotel.
In the first season, Odo is looking at a passenger manifest and one of the previous destinations of the ship was Alderaan. Continuity confirmed.

@@kennethmelnychuk9737 He did not get any money or credit from Paramount. He pitched Babylon 5 to Paramount before DS9 ever existed but they wouldn't accept all 5 seasons right away. They wanted to give him one season and maybe more if it went well. He wrote a 5 season story and wanted to make sure it was able to be told so he took his idea elsewhere. Shortly after, Paramount creates DS9 with a loooooot of similarities like you mentioned. Absolutely not a coincidence!

DS9 was the lonely Federation Outpost in disputed space , relations with the Cardassians were still tense when we saw the TV Pilot , this reality would go back and forth as time went on ...
The clarinet playing in the show theme was appropriate, it symbolized the lonely outpost far from Federation space - the clarion call.
Everything fitted together quite well I think , it’ll be difficult to replicate a Star Trek series with such quality in the future, and I’d be very surprised if it’s ever achieved.
Congratulations on painting an entire Sisters army during lockdown- that’s commendable! The new range is really nice looking (and as you know, it’s been a long time coming)- I toyed with the idea of collecting the Sororitas myself, but I’ve been working on a 30K Raven Guard army for the past 3 years, and that takes up all of my time. Anyway- I have never watched DS9, but I’m actually just getting into Star Trek, and your channel is giving me a great base of knowledge before starting to watch full seasons of the shows. Those lifts are regular lifts, here, we were talking about turbolifts.

I remember that the Enterprise refit (in the movie) have elevators too in engineering, and Enterprise D have too, since episode 1 (functionals, I mean).

Great video...but I remember there being working lifts in Voyager and the Enterprise NX-O1's engineering rooms. There might also have been one in the Enterprise-E's engine room but I'm not 100% sure

Just finished rewatching DS9 and it's still the greatest Trek show in many ways. Great stories, fantastic characters with interesting arcs, and they basically included the whole Alpha Quadrant into the show which makes it so much more fun. It may be that TNG is still a bit more my favorite but overall DS9 is a superior show.

Yes, good point! 👍 The Enterprise-D engine room lift didn't represent a tubolift, but it was indeed a functioning lift.
NX-01 had one in the engine room. Trip said something about it when he was pregnant.

I remember when DS9 was on the long forgotten UPN on TV, my Mother watched an episode with me and she said something that has stuck with me for years and it's absolutely true for all the TV shows of Star Trek, but I think more so with DS9, and that is, "So basically, this is a science fiction soap opera show." And Mom was absolutely correct. On a funny note the one that really looked and took the award for Sci-fi Soap Opera show, was Babylon 5. I loved that show, but now as an (older) adult I have all the seasons of Babylon 5 on DVD, and I can barely watch it, but I have since re-watched DS9 and it's simply timeless and easier to stomach lol. I have a really cool limited hard to find huge 1:850 scale model of DS9 station and I was horrified to find that the easy lighting model with clear parts that sounded cool but in reality it means the entire model is clear and will be a pain in the hinny to make. I couldn't believe it when I opened the box and said what the heck lol. I've been building and lighting star trek ships for years and years in truth I just make really cool lamps. But this is going to be a tough build being clear. Even came with a small Defiant and a Cardassian cruiser. Also all clear. Anyway, one of the best Star Trek shows in my opinion, was DS9 and absolutely bringing in the Defiant helped save the show. Favorite show and favorite ship. #5 - there were little mini lifts in the Enterprise D's engineering set that lifted one person at a time up to the upper level.
I love all these lists. my husband and I have enjoyed them thoroughly. as a musician, I would really love to see a list of the top musical moments. my personal favorites are from inner light and the wounded. I know most people would say wrath of khan is theirs. I think it would make a great list. thanks! keep up the great work!

Now doing some digging as Gunsmoke was well before my time though syndication Plus Radio Classic channel on Sirius XM plays Gunsmoke.. ANY how.. Worf though held the StarFleet Position of Security BUT he kinda is Chester to Odo's being Matt. And yet Nothing for Sisko and son so if anything it is a blend of The Rifleman and Gunsmoke with a dash of Say Maverick to include the reboot of the series Kira is the Newspaper owner from the reboot and well Garak can be sorta Maverick if you take the Gambler/Con artist and turn it into espionage. Okay perhaps I maybe stretching... but One last Stretch Take The Rifleman and blend it with "The Courtship of Eddie's Father... That is the story parallel for Sisko and Jake.

Mostly because I hate the colored gunsmokes .Ive never seen the second decade of the show really , but Kira is ms kitty not because of gender but because she's Odos "forbidden love interest" , you could say the she runs the station like ms kitty ran the bar ... And quark is chester because hes always trying to impress Odo , albeit in a different kind of way , like chester was always trying to impress "MR DILLON ! MR DILLON!" , he's Odos sidekick early on ... Then later they move to Garak always being with odo , like festis Garak has an edge to him , they're both hidden badasses . With shady pasts but are generally good people . . And of course you have o'brien and doctor bashir with the classic Laramie best friends plot . O'brien is Slim , bashir is Jess ..

God gave me these four steps via divine revelation. He said anyone who does all four are guaranteed a divine revelation of their own. They are the mustard seed of Faith, the bare minimum amount of effort he's willing to accept before he reveals himself to you personally. Believe or not, do for yourself and see. Forgive your parents, break down before Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and read the Bible. There's deep spiritual significance in these steps. Every one is important, and it's the least God accepts. Three books of the bible will be enough for the revelation. I recommend Genesis, Mathew, and then either Luke, Psalms, or proverbs. I'm not talking about signs, feelings, etc, but am honest to goodness one on one conversation with God. An actual meeting. Unmistakable, and unable to be misinterpretaed. He told me that he's guaranteed the steps to work 100%. You just need to do them guininly. It's not hard. Do those steps in that order please. It's all True. I promise,

About the functioning lifts, were the ones on DS9 the only ones that met that criteria? What about the lift we clearly saw used in Engineering (by the warp core) of the Enterprise-D on TNG? Was that an actual functioning set piece or not?
Janna Renee They we’re functioning lifts, and they actually go all the way back to The Motion Picture.
And the one in Voyager engineering as well. I presume he meant only functioning *turbolifts*, though I am not sure these qualify as turbolifts.
There's also one on the NX-01 Enterprise
From a production standpoint, the lifts in TMP were first. TMP engineering set became TNGs Engineering, and later Voyagers. The sets were just reworked. So the lifts are essentially the same lifts. They did also have lifts in Enterprise, but those were made after DS9.
"...seasons 6, 7 & 8..." 8? The Infirmary was still all Cardassian computer interfaces. Otherwise, great video!

Watched Star Trek TNG, Voyager and Deep Space Nine during Covid lockdown.
Definitely recommend it, especially if we get the second wave.

This was a really great video. I loved it and the loads of trivia in it, some I knew, some I didn't. I just wanted to add that there was a mention of DS9 in the Voyager episode "Pathfinder", which was made after DS9 (the show) had finished. Barclay is talking to his Supervisor about a plan they could use to contact Voyager. He says something like "the latest astrometric data from Deep Space Nine included a Class B Itinerant Pulsar". This is actually also the only time in the entire franchise we get mention of Voyager, Deep Space Nine AND the Enterprise in one episode!
