    I love it when he summarizes movies. "War in the future, world's destroyed some kinda dog trying to save a daughter"
    Like he's heard every movie plot ever and is just tired of all of it's cliches.

    The best example of Post-Apocalyptic + Dark I can think of would be Pitch Black. Cheap and very effective.

    Great video. Science Fiction art books are the best, I have them all. There was nothing like this when I was a kid.
    The best 2 futuristic aviation art books would have to be Icon by Frank Frazetta and Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson. Science fiction jets whizzing by at high speed -- what's not to like?

    I haven't seen anyone make this argument yet. Not disagreeing with feng, I just want to point that out science fiction does have a grounded base ( which is science ). But many movies choose to ignore this fact, and go for the science fantasy route, which I argue is a lot more work. just my 2 cents

    It's so hard to find references to architecture/scenery of old london. i am open for suggestions. best thing so far was to buy Assassins Creed Syndicate and wander through the City of London.

    your armor example doesn't hold up. Sci Fi settings work on the same premise of "bulkier armor > thin & light-weight armor" a lot of our cultural and social understanding can easily transfer to sci fi settings because we form a lot of global ideas of how the world works and sci fi settings can draw from that without an issue.

  • @DHTSciFiArtist
    @DHTSciFiArtist 7 років тому

    Fantasy is heavily referenced from real world and sci-fi is not. It's a myth.
    Science Fiction is referenced from the real world as well. For example, back in the 80's, TNG had PADD which were extrapolated from future concepts of micro-computers. Military sci-fi draws heavily from real life hardware. Example, Edge Of Tommorow. Blade Runner drew from the heavy-urbanization of Hong Kong and Tokyo.

    small error. star wars does have anti-gravity.

  • @Demonskunk
    @Demonskunk 7 років тому

    I disagree with so much of what you're talking about. You can't compare a strange device that is weird and important you the plot to a HORSE. The better comparison would be some kind of magic crystal to the blade runner machine, in which case you still have to explain what it does. You used starships from 3 very different types of scifi movie. Those hallways did have something in common with each other, and fantasy hallways can be just as different.

    • @kristyglas
      @kristyglas 7 років тому

      Even taking that example: there are many crystals in real life and even historical "occult" information on how they were "used" or what they represent. A lot of culture based rituals in history as well. Runes are already a part of the popular culture so is tarot and many more things. Edit: Moreover you have "magic" in the most know religions, so it has been around for way longer than we have known that Earth is round.

    • @Demonskunk
      @Demonskunk 7 років тому

      Kristina but my point is that the general public doesn't know that stuff, you'll have to spend time explaining it in the same way you have to explain what the machine from event horizon does.

    • @kristyglas
      @kristyglas 7 років тому

      True, it also might be a cultural difference. Maybe I've met more superstitious people and those simply interested in "spirituality". I personally prefer fantasy over sci-fi, but lately have been more interested in much more variety of genres. However it's still rather hard for me to figure out how a real life camera works mechanically, or a gun.
