- GRIP Combat Racing seems perfectly at home on Nintendo Switch, when the game was first announced I was determined to review it. If you ever played Rollcage or Wipeout it might just be worth a ridiculously FAST trip down memory lane! But is it worth grabbing! Let's find out??

Yoyoyoyo Anyone play ROLLCAGE back in the day!? I had to get this one out there, I had to entirely rewrite my review as unfortunately the original release had terrible performance. Thankfully this developer are amazing and have released a patch that totally changes the experience! Phew I'm exhausted! Night night SwitchUp family. Leave me some comments to wake up to! (Mark)

There's something very *satisfying* about racing games. Im not a huge fan but whenever I play em I'm addicted. I remember playing *hot pursuit* with my dudes back in the day...soooo sweet! This game looks pretty cool great review guys

Oh man, I loved Rollcage back in the day. Futuristic, ultra fast, and with some of the coolest electronic music at the time which still holds up to this day. This looks like a great modern day equivalent.
Yeah it's crazy how dated it looks in that footage at the start!! I thought the graphics were great when I was younger. This feels the same but a touch faster! (Mark)
Great video and I don’t know if you’re aware but there’s film grain filter applied to the graphics turned on by default try disabling it game looks cleaner especially on Xbox one x, I love the game by way There’s some depth to the racing which I always enjoy.being able make your vehicle jump, and adding mid-air control when release the gas is cool also unlockable weapons, vehicles etc. sleeper hit for me
A BIG thank you regarding that tip you gave on making the game’s graphics a little more visually palatable (lower contrast, increase gamma). I just bought it and the two bundle packs as a birthday gift on sale after being warned about Redout, and while the controls, graphics and menu interface leaves something to be desired, for some reason, I can’t wait to play more of it.

I have to say, I respect Caged Elephant for using the approach of having set vehicles (no skill trees or vehicle upgrades)
Its an aspect in gaming thats not looked at much anymore, and its staying true to its spiritual roots.

I got this and while I do hope to see performance patches to improve framerate later, I am enjoying it regardless. As an old school wipeout/rollcage fan back in the day I had to get it. No regrets.

Thanks for the review. The game actually look faster than I thought it was. Still don't like the tire spinning animation and it looks a tad too busy. But I'm a huge racing fan. So I'll wait for a deep discount on the physical copy

are the controls customizable? i despise using the triggers for acceleration and braking in racing games.
Oh I love Grip for its awesome soundtrack! I think it's better off on PC though, but it's still fun to play this on the go!

I got this in the sale today because it was dirt cheap. I wanted it as soon as I saw it but couldn’t justify the price to myself when I literally still have Rollcage on a 2003 IBM ThinkPad with Windows XP. That game was a huge part of my childhood and why racing games are among my absolute favorite as an adult, so this was a must have for me and I’m thankful it was super cheap in the sale.
I play handheld only on a Switch Lite and haven’t had any noticeable performance issues. Looks and plays great to my eyes.
Need the 4-player splitscreen madness for me to go for it. So, I'll get it on XBox.
That said, I do have Fast RMX, and I'm thinking of getting Team Sonic Racing on Switch.

This is on sale for bout £9 I’m undecided on buying grip or rise race the future. Rise kinda looks better to me but the car handling looks like it may be really floaty.
Do you think you guys will review the road rash like road redemption?
I LOATHED the wipeout from the old Rollcage. I always wanted to like the game, but jeeze man those wipeouts were frustrating as all hell.

Yeah, it's a very fun one. I wish there was more car modification you could do. Essentially, Mario Kart is deeper in that respect. Still, a very fun game. (Mark)

It has a really nice 90's gaming vibe to it so might check it out, for now its a good alternative to games like F Zero
Definitely, it's very 90s in a good way. My only gripe is the online, there just doesn't seem to be many games or the servers are rubbish. (Mark)

This is how a port should be! That crew who brought the Xenon Racing to the Switch should take advice off this studio! Hardly any pop up and it looks butter smooth. What do you reckon the fps is?

Maybe i got a faulty game or something but mine doesn't run anywhere near this good, it has horrible texture popping, choppy sound, incredibly bad framerate drops etc. did anyone else have these issues?

This just reminds me of Speed Racer on the Wii, I know it was childish and the wii wasn’t a powerhouse but that game was the “fastest” I’d felt a racer ever be without me crashing into walls every turn and the cheat codes were dope af
Wipeout 1 and Wipeout 2 had an amazing soundtrack also Rollcage generic music in games is disappointing but I guess we were spoiled

Woah, this game looks so good! I've never played Rollcage (or heard about it to be honest) but if it's anything like this it looks like it would be right up my alley! It's a shame that the performance isn't perfect, but the fact that they're already patching the game gives me high hopes!! Awesome review Mark. Really interested in this game.

This game looks cool but racing games don’t hold my attention long (outside of Mario kart with friends). I bought fast rmx at launch and played the crap out of it the first couple days but haven’t gone back to it. Might check it out if it goes on a steep sale. Great review and get some rest

Some people say its barely playable, because of the framerate and the low resolution. What do you think? I can't tell, because we have a bad internet conection and I have to watch videos in 240p.
It's more than playable, but it's in need of more patches. There are some levels that are worse than others but it is payable yeah (Mark)

looks like a great game, but i have to admit, will be hunting down a 60fps version. i just cant bring myself to pay premium price for an arcade racer thats not 60fps. sounds like the devs are doing a steller job on the switch port though.

The biggest worry with racing on a handheld is the fps. However, both games are made with the same (unreal) engine and if they can make GRIP look this good then Redout stands a chance as well. I suppose the problem with Redout may be that the Switch controls are too simpe for the game.

I haven't tried the Switch version of UA-cam yet! I hope they haven't told UA-cam to remove that because that will seriously negatively impact us as a small channel! (Mark)

Yay !! good vid I got this game on Tuesday and think it's great back in 1990's where gameplay (racing at least) is top in developers minds, who cares about graphics look at cave story or vvvvv game play must always be king and for a racer this fast who see anything but a blur ( another great racing game) but I will take your advise and change the contrast & brightness the game does look pale. I agree 100% with your views not tried online yet to happy playing the career mode 😀😀 Nintendo need to change their pricing structure becoming too confusing I always thought buying on line was cheap but this game is more expensive than the physical that blows the extra cost of production out the window I do I smell profits??

I honestly hoped this was by the same people (Sidhe) who did GripShift last gen, as I would kill to get Sidhe’s IMO best game Shatter on Switch.
But sadly it seems to have nothing to do with them after searching online.

@@SwitchUpYt it's amazing lately I'm seeing alot of games that mash slightly different genres (transistor, trail blazers and moonlighter just to name a few). I love how developers can be so creative and make old mechanics fresh
I want it if they can get better frame stability. Needs to have a 30 minimum.. if it can get a consistent 40ish, I'll buy it.

If they can't do it with the first game I don't see them putting effort into a second game especially on switch. It wasn't all that on the 1x
@@redcrimson1028 Video Games don't just start out in their best form (usually), give them a chance to improve instead of shitting on them for their first attempt. It's obvious that, despite your feelings on the game, the game and the genre have a good following. Are there things this particular title could have done or implemented better?
Sure.
Are there things that it has done well?
Yes.
Sequels help to expand on original Ideas and a chance to hear the criticism from consumers, and work on improvements to the title for round 2.

A better career/story mode with more customization would be awesome!

Ngl, this game was not very good, RMX and hell even Xenon was better then this game, tracks look nice and the concept is cool, but the AI rubberbanding is pretty unfair and it's so easy to screw up

I still own and play Rollcage and Stage 2 because they still look good and are playable whereas Grip is Totally S••• to play. I hate it and together with Dark Souls, Minecraft and Ark The Nintendo Switch is Heading for the toilet...
