- Gaming Pastime reviews GRIP: Combat Racing for PC.
Developed by Caged Element and published by Wired Productions GRIP: Combat Racing was released for PC in November, 2018. Somewhere in GRIP: Combat Racing is a fun racing game but it’s held down by an array of problems that affect even the most enjoyable aspects.

4:31 Might well be I'm not that far yet, but in that instance you had the shield up and drove into the barrier yourself.
Another note, it seems you missed the boost feature. The bottom right is a boost bar that you fill with the green arrows on the tracks. You use it with Y on the gamepad controls as a boost, like nitro in other racing games.
just discovered this channel. Great reviews! 👍👏
The one thing that keeps me from jumping into this game is the fact that not a single racing game maintains a lively community on PC, it's a shame because i really love rollcage. Still this looks pretty solid.
Not just PC. Sci-fi or Antigrav racing games just can't get decent online numbers in general. Grip is equally as dead on PS4, and the Wipeout Omega Collection, the supposed pinnacle of PS4 sci-fi racers, gets very little traffic. I can imagine that Fast RMX, Redout, etc are in a similar vote.
The only franchise I could ever see with an active community is if they ever decide to make a F-Zero GX sequel. That game's popularity dwarfs Wipeout.
GRIP has a lively community. The discord is very big, active, and gets lots of traffic.
You make some really good reviews
rubber banding? i just assumed the combat kept the cars at a competitive pace.
The slowdown weapon doesnt just slow everyone but the user down, but has lesser effects the further back you are, for example.
If anyone has interest in a gaming relic, there's a game called Scorcher from 1996 for PC and Sega Saturn which had a similar racing concept to Rollcage 3 years earlier. Never really took off and is a very small game in scope, I found it a lot of fun to work out routes with its very momentum-based handling model, the physics are very impressive for 1996
Dethkarz (1998) was similar too except the speed was not that good, and the racing was plain, no driving on walls or ceilings. Well in those years we had similar racing games.
Your review was perfect. Subbed
The game's amazing for me, I'm having a blast with it, but I'd lie if I said you didn't raise some good point. The game is flawed, but still very good in my opinion.
Love how thorough and neutral your reviews are, answered all my questions about it.
Not played a game like this since Fatal Inertia solid review cheers.
Very good points on the review. Can I share your video in my steam review?
You forgot to mention that Rollcage hand destructible environments, Which didnt come back in grip. I really really liked your review. Grip does have a lot of problems that need fixing.
Love this game so much, I loved Rollcage and this one is a ton of fun, its a bit frustrating on the higher difficulties! I probably might be the only one...
You're not alone. I'm stuck at tier 6 so far and it's just getting way too hard. Everything seems to come down to luck to win. I've mastered the tracks but then the AI just decided to screw me up in the final moments. Frustrating.
@@sackboy5683 appreciate that, aside from the frustrating ai, I seem to enjoy it, they did a good job with the spiritual successor to rollcage.
Just got the game for PS4 and I was having a ball. Grip is pretty much the first Rollcage game for modern consoles.
I love this game. So glad i found it used!!!
I wonder if this is worth getting in 2021
Does anyone know if the AI has since been patched & improved from when this was recorded?
(6:46) *Hold* *it* *!* What you just said?
It reminds me of Hi Octane or Pod, very old games.
Campaign in GRIP explicitly doesn't utilize rubber-banding. Often beating the competition by more than 2 kilometers, I can testify to that.
In Ultimate Race, the higher you finish (both the race overall and each lap) the more points you get.
They did patch the handling, so that's off the list too. Probably. It did get better, but might still be Rollcage 1-level floaty.
At least you didn't say "Techno-like soundtrack" this time. It's still DnB.
Tho I admit the OST is of a lower quality than in Rollcage games. It's hard to top Tech Itch, Ed Rush, Dom & Roland...
All in all it's a pretty good game though, it is a hard sob. The local multiplayer option makes it nice too. Don't see that much anymore. I got it for 9 bucks on Steam.
can we use switch pro controller connected on pc in this game?
2:31 - Did anyone else laugh when they read that? Lol!
Try going on their steam page and looking at the negative reviews, then have a look at how many of them have developer responses.
Consider that there are developer responses that either deny the AI rubberbanding exists, or claim that it's necessary to make races more "exciting".
@@StonyHarpy and that sucked hard. It became more of a luck to win a track now. I did everything so well but in the last 10 seconds the AI just decided I need to keep playing the tracks 50 more times so I lost. Again.
now this is pod racing!
If they can patch the floaty feeling of the vehicles then this racer would be perfect.
Redout is coming up next I take it
Seconded, would love a redout review
bought this for 1,22$ cause it was the only thing left on my paysafecard. Best purchase ever
Great review!. You bring good points
Thanks for sharing
Is ballisticNG next?
Few weeks
Review Critical Depth next.
usally you have to feel light if your fast for example titanfall 2 is a fast paced game but you feel light
Damn straight! I don't see any good reason as to why they've made the game so punishing (often due to poor handling and track design). The developer's idea of what Rollcage was doesn't coincide with mine, 'cos it really wasn't Dark Souls of racing or something. If you want something reasonably hard and much more fun in the same (well, not really, but close) sub-genre - try Distance. No weapons or opponents there, but your car is a ninja.
@kroooassant Yeah, I know they aren't in the same league per se. The thing is that there aren't many other references when it comes to games with vehicular acrobatics.
I just get this game and Pacer on g2a for 2 and 3 euros. This games are awesome! It's all about speed (and skill in Pacer heh)
Pacer is SHAMEFULL, it doesnt have local multiplayer in consoles , thats unnaceptable
F-Zero with Weaponsss!
I bought this game, but it doesnt start on my PC for some unknown reason.
BallisticNG is where it’s at
Now make a review of Onrush
When PSX games have better driving than Rage 2 from 2019. You know the game is fcked!
get good bruh
Can they please reboot Extreme G!!!
I hated that game. So foggy and muddy looking. I really tried to like it but it just couldn't hold a candle to games like fzero and wipeout. I always felt like it was a poor compromise of a game in it's genre. I'm glad you enjoyed it though :)
@@wrathpsp I mean for the time it was good for what it was. It wasn't a triple AAA title like those other games either, so I just appreciated what they could with what they had. I didn't play the third one and the second one sucked. I only like the first one. That series had and still has a lot of potential
Gears of war series...you have to do it
Grip is great on easier difficulty, but the difficulty spike makes the game too frustrating.
rubber banding in racing games shouldn't be a thing, ruins the fun, makes you think you're good but turns out you're ass. However one point made me chuckle that you're disappointed with grip because you only enjoyed MOST of it? Nani
Maybe you play another great fantastic racing games - Nitronic Rush (free game) and Distance (spiritual sucsessor / sequel)?

store.steampowered.com/app/233610/Distance/
Lok like an HD ps2 game ...
Think I'll stick to F zero on N64 ;)
omg... WHY! Does EVERYTHING needs a progression system now!! Devs needs to STOP THIS. It's such a silly mechanic.
Because it keeps people addicted and many people are like "I have no reason to play if i am not unlocking stuff every 5 minutes". Many people of today need instant gratification, it's sad.
@@TomLehockySVK It really is sad, and it makes games look like cheap f2p mobile apps. smh...
@Balakeh This
That's good speed sensation to you? x'D
*laughs in Ballistic NG*
Finally a honest review. The same thing I've said since ps4 and switch release. The rubber banding and moon physics vehicles ruin whole experience
Have you looked at Mario Odyssey yet🍄🐢
We have
looks so slow!!
Punishing gameplay is not what I call fun at times.
I'll have to pass purely because of the rubberbanding.
It’s the worse game ever can believe I have spend money on that
