    This is a great example that shows where the limits of Maxamet are. Fantastic for normal EDC use, but not really for hard use or abuse.

    Tip bro ; When in the field , try using ash from your fire mixed with water to make a paste to clean your stones ( works awesome on ceramics) I just rub it with my fingers hard and rinse it off. I totally love the new DS2 also. Bought a couple already.Pete

    Man those chips would happen w any knife I got some in a cold steel d2 from cutting a can

  • @mostmuscular619

    That can beat the shit out of that edge. I'm a bit discouraged here. I just bought the Manix 2 in S110V and Maxamet. Reconsidering keeping the S110V instead?

    As soon as ya started on that can o beans I knew you'd might have to eat some maxamet chips with it! Cpm m4 is about as high as I'd go for hard use, but it takes it like a champ. M4 is a "fickle mistress" tho, all having to do with getting that edge right with that tough carbide formation.

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 Рік тому

      M4 is my favorite as well. I don't mind the lack of corrosion resistance and it seems to hold an edge without taking damage as well or better than any other steels out there for what I do. I don't have any experience with Maxamet or the newer steels to come after S110V and such though.
      I figure if it ain't broke I won't fix it though. M4 is my steel I suppose.

    Was this the factory edge that chipped, or have you passed three or four custom sharpenings first? It's typical for chippings early on in most highed end steels that I have noticed. Then they kind of settle in.

    @SimonsDiscoveries 6 років тому +2

    Just found you channel and subscribed.
    The exact same thing happened to my Manix with Maxamet blade when opening a can. The chipping didn't occur until I started turning the blade to follow the curvature of the can. Did you also hear that ominous cracking when turning the blade? lol
    It actually did absolutely no damage when I cut the metal along a straight line. Also, sharpening didn't seem to be that big of a deal for me either.

    • @FearNoSteel
      @FearNoSteel  6 років тому +1

      Simon's Discoveries nice, I've been your subscriber for a while haha. Interesting, I never thought of the twisting. It held up like a champ on everything else. Yeah the Sharpening difficulty is overblown.

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries 6 років тому

      Oh, nice :) Have we talked on UA-cam before? Sorry, I can't remember. I think that if I really needed to cut metal with this knife, all I'd need to do is round off the edge to increase the angle and stability. I have a feeling it'd cut metal like a champ. But then, its cutting efficiency would most likely drop dramatically when used on most other materials that we actually cut everyday.

    • @FearNoSteel
      @FearNoSteel  6 років тому +1

      Simon's Discoveries I agree, of course . Cutting metal is just silly haha

    I've had my maxamet para 2 for about a month now.... I wish I went with s30v.
    I'm not saying that s30v is better, but if you live near the beach, maxamet requires way to much maintenance. The oil seems to rub off on one side in my pocket, and if I dont oil daily it will rust. But I still love this knife

    • @lindboknifeandtool
      @lindboknifeandtool 3 роки тому +1

      Try forcing a patina. The patina helps create a surface that holds oil better. You could also go for an aftermarket coating like cerakote.

  • @MrWeedpeet
    @MrWeedpeet 6 років тому

    These Chips are no fun to get out. Do you think the steel is too brittle or would the damage be similar in a manix with s30v or cts xhp? Im just curious. :) Nice field sharpening demonstration. I think a Dmt double stone came in handy aswell.

    • @FearNoSteel
      @FearNoSteel  6 років тому +1

      MrWeedpeet haha it only chips if you use it as a can opener, 8cr13mov makes a better can opener but Maxamet will destroy it at everything else. Seems we can't have it all. I'll take Maxamet since I can sharpen and I keep user error to a minimum

    I know you love those Spyderco's Sean or Shawn (sorry I do not know proper spelling) so I am wondering if you have an order in for that Manix2 in M4? M4 seems to be the craze as of late. I see it coming out with all major knife producer's and with good reason, holds an awesome edge! I've got several of those many M4's out there to include a couple BRK's. I think I see a new alter-ego for you...Maximetman!

      Nate Brabant the DLC version looks radical. I currently have more then enough M4 in my collection. I love my jade g10 Millie, wish I got the free square head too though. Hahaha that's hilarious MaxametMan lmao

    Great video! Finally someone who exposes his blade to real world conditions! Need your advice BBB. Manix 2 LW Maxamet or Shaman S30V? I know you are a steel expert and Maxamet is a "harder" steel but just wondering what your take is. Thank you!

    Murray carters neck knives are truly amazing. Idk why I'm saying that here but it's so thin sharpen it in a king 1k and 6k maybe at about 5 degrees per side edge doesn't roll can still chop or carve wood. And I just try comfortably Dry shave with it. Unbelievable

    How have your thoughts changed about Spyderco's Maxamet over the years?
    Was the release of this steel one of the main influences on your pursuit of making high end knives with the highest wear resistance possible? Like, is this was led you to pursue REX 121, 15V, and the like?

    I carry a DMT Diafold in coarse/fine, and, an X-fine/XX-fine for fixing problem edges away from home. If I need to fix an edge problem those can't handle, it's probably time to get a new knife, anyway. :)

  • @SL-wi8jk

    Great video, really enjoyed the can test. I wish more youtubers would push the envelope of what real edc and camping knives are subjected too. If it was your only knife you might have to open a hundred cans with it then stab a bear. Shit happens.
