    Horl is actually a German brand that came out with the first version of this sharpener a few years ago, so good on you for getting the original one! It was founded by a father and son after the father had fiddled around with many prototypes for 30 years now (hence the 1993 on the logo)
    Tumbler (the American brand heavily advertising online) blatantly stole the idea and did not even make a good job of it. It's cheaper and definitely works but the Horl is miles better. I believe Horl has also taken legal action since the mechanisms are patented but I guess it's a slow process across the atlantic ocean...

      From what I read, they are both fashioned after a patent that expired around 1966. The Horl needs be to be a lot better, for over $400. The Tumbler is 1/4 that. I cannot justify the difference for my knives.

      You're comparing two different products. The "regular" horl sharpener is around 100€, so it's reasonably priced. The 400€ one you are talking about is a special edition with a gear box inside making the disc spin faster.

    These sharpeners have been makin the rounds lately, and while the results are what you'd expect from any sharpening assisting kit or tool, these things are WAY more overpriced than they have any right to be. They cost somewhere like 150-200 USD, where you can grab like a Gatco or Lansky sharpening kit or something similar for around 50-70 which'll produce the same, or better, results with a wider range of edge degrees available. Bit more hassle to set up sure, but not enough of a hassle to justify 130-150 dollars more for a sharpening tool/kit.

    Kinda like those old roll-along kitchen knife sharpeners that were basically pairs of sharpening disks bonded together. You inserted the blade & rolled it across the countertop. Difference here is with the blade being stationary & magnetically secured you get a more consistent result. Plus, can choose between two sharpening angles. VERY NICE. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    I absolutely need this thing- I love cooking so my knives can get dull lretty fast. I suck at using whetstones bc I easily get distracted and with mess up the pressure/angle/keeping the stone wet after awhile lol. Its been on my list of future investments ever since I saw the Tumbler(?) Yt channel! (They're like 99$ usd and the leather strop is sold separately)

    The problem with this is that it is far too static to be useful for anyone with various styles of knives. Think cleavers or blades with a belly and nose section. Not only that but, different angled cutlery that isn't 20 or 15 degrees will need to be reprofiled.

      Most kitchen knives are in that range. German ones are 22 IIRC and Japanese ones are 17, I believe. So I'm guessing they are targeting kitchen use.

You’ve got a great channel keep doing what you’re doing. It’s always nice to see a new sharpener and to be able to go by it. Thank you very much and I don’t know if you know but I’ve heard that if you take the picture through Google search you’ll see a little camera if you take the picture of the instructions, it will translate it, and. it will even read them to you again thank you from one of your followers, Wayne O’Bryant Merced California

    My dad just bought The Tumbler. Which is the exact same as this one at the end of the day. It made quick work of his knives and was pretty impressive. I just wish they'd make a smaller version for pocket knives. I still like my diamond stone though.

    • @info0
      @info0 Рік тому

      it's not the same. You can't change the discs on Tumbler and the guys from Horl (Austria) are giving him a case in court for stealing their patent. Tumbler is only sold in USA/CANADA due to that reason alone. He knows he has stolen intellectual property, the scumbag.

      For kitchen knives, my wife effs them up too fast with drawer storage and cutting on plates to bother with stones. I dropped the $120 or whatever on a ChefsChoice, and can knock out all her knives in under 10 minutes. It doesn't make my inner knife geek happy, but it sure gets the chore done.

  • @blackwulfentertainment9542

    The Horl 2 is actually the more preferred one by people. More sturdy than the Tumblr version and they use stronger magnets (guessing neodymium) to hold the blade better

    There are lots of knife sharpening systems out there that will hold a constant angle against the edge. But this one by far does it with a far simpler bit of kit that doesn't require a tower and guide rods to be set up. This is so simple a grandma can pull it off in her kitchen. And it will get you a nice 'toothy' edge like you normally get with a flat stone. Toothy edges aren't show quality edges were you can see your reflection in the polished edge, but rather a performance edge that you can actually feel has some bite when it slices into something. 17 degrees is nice for slicing knives for meat, but will require more maintenance with a honing steel to keep sharp. The 23 degree edge is a good sturdy edge for your vegetable and utility knives as it will hold an edge for longer and needs less honing.
