2 months late but that's exactly what happen to me yesterday, spent 90% of the time restring while everyone else was catching 2 or 3 fishes. Fishing is suppose to be a relaxing habit but so far, second time out, all I'm doing is fixing the damn strings.
Thanks! Was having a couple birds nest issues while kayaking this morning forcing me back in and tried your adjustments later this afternoon and no issues!
Just got some new 20lb braid with only say 60 feet of it in my river reel and was still looping on the reel and yanking the lure back when I was casting... was getting right on my... nerves... thanks for the info... # life saver
im so glad youre teaching your viewers this information. this past monday i had a spinning reel that kept bird nesting after 2 cast and so i respooled the line then after 2 cast same thing happened and each time i would close the bail then reel the slacked line in and it would bird nest. So i bought a new spinning reel and moral of all this is do like he said and you wont have this problem i try to close the bail by my paw but often times the bail closes before my paw closes the bail which some degree no big deal but best you close the bail with your paw.

Thanks for the tip! Fishing in Greece for some Dentex this weel with my new setup, and this happened about four times on the first day. I spent at least an hour squinting at knots and trying to unravel them. I thought it was my drag settings, but after your explanation, I'll forever check my spool before reeling in!
Well, I'll say you are ALMOST right. I live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (borders Wisconsin). I was born in Rhinelander, but have been living In the U.P. since I was 4 years old. And yes I am a Packer fan. Thanks for the comment.
Great video, thanks for the awesome tips. One question tho. What should you do if you notice the loop in the spool, but it hasn’t tangled the rest of the line yet. So even after closing the bail and pulling and tightening the line, you still see a loop in the spool.
I hate monofilament fishing line for the same reason that whenever it tangled, I had to throw it away in the garbage since I don't have that much patience and time to untangle that mess. Therefore, I switched to a braided line which has very less stretch and 0 memory
I use a weighted and baited big bunch of old birdsnests on the end of a nylon rope ,leave it in the water for a while and catch lobters that always get tangled in the birdnest trap....you're welcome 😊
I would consider myself an "advid weekend fisherman" been doing it all my life really, and can't not think of a time where this has been an issue. That is until 2 or 3 weeks ago. I'd been fishing a new body of water, with a decent quality new reel and this started happening left and right. To the point it was almost getting donated to the bottom of the lake out of frustration. Seems like such an obvious thing to realize, yet I completely overlooked it. Now I feel like a big dumb dumb but I'm headed to the water shortly and I'm thinking this is going to cure my issues. Many thanks to you for this my man👍👍👍
Nice video. My issue is when a start to cast and flip the rail and hold the line with my index finger I always get line unraveling out from the spool. This is a new Quantum open spin cast with 6lb spider wire line. Why is this happening?. I always have to pull out the slack before casting. I never had any issues with my other Quantum open reels in the past. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks. I did a better version of a similar video. Here is a link if you want to check it out LINK - ua-cam.com/video/azcAM8cvZIs/v-deo.html Thanks again for watching, KPO.

Learn to close your bail manually. I learned this years ago. I was only children crank the handle to close the bail and it makes a annoying CLANG noise. People actually send really nice reels back because the bail doesn't shut automatically to get a refund. By not closing manually you're adding twist and possibly adding loops in the line. It's also putting wear on the reel.
I was fishing this morning at around 7 in the morning, 30 degrees, really cold, I haven't used a spinner in over 2 years, let alone fished in over 2 years, and this happened and it was just a mess
Cole Slaw I put my finger on the line when I hit the water, like you would with a bait caster, to eliminate the slack. Then close it with my thumb. That seems to work very well.
My line keeps twisting and wants to knot up as im putting on the reel and the knot thing when you cast out it happens lol it seems a little better after it gets wet but im sure it happens to the professionals to they got tricks though

Helped me out, this mostly happens on my small crappie reels!
The smaller spools have a tighter turn radius. Sometimes with smaller spools I try to keep with the lighter line 4lb or less, KPO.

you manually close the bail as soon as the bait hits the water?

Is it better to just get a bait caster reel?
Bait casters are better for some things, but they might be more notorious for line issues than spinning gear. KPO.
