    Thanks mate. My first ever outing was a complete disaster. After 3 casts my reel was so knotted up line wrapped around everything I couldn't continue. Never been taught how to fish so learning by my mistakes. Frustrating. Your videos are a big help.

      For sure a learning experience for people who were never taught, I learned pretty quick on a spinning reel tbh but when I switched to a baitcaster, phew that was a good 12 birdsnests an outing. Always went back to my spinning, but now that i've learned it well, I can't go back to the spinning... Once you learn it well, you'll fall in love my friend. Good luck out there.

      Change gear. Go to your local sporting goods store and buy a GOOD LIGHT power rod in 5'6' to 6' length. Pair it with a GOOD size 100 0r 150 reel spooled with GOOD 10lb. braid. Tie on a 1/8 oz in line spinner and learn to cast using one hand. One hand on the rod and one hand on the reel and keep your casts around 50'. Forget this two hand casting crap. You do nothing but over power your lure and destroy any chance you have of making an accurate cast. And keep your elbow close to your body. Pull up a video of a GOOD fly rod fisherman and watch how they cast. Their elbow never leaves their side and you will never see them casting with two hands with the exception of salmon fisherrmen using 10' to 12' spey rods when they are throwing 75-100 feet of line. Let the rod do the casting And FYI good means $100- MINIMUM, except the braid and be sure the braid is 8 strand.

    You hit em all perfectly. My grandfather taught me around 4yo to use a spinning rod. He preached closing the bell, spooling the right amount of line, controlling the cast...... in return, I taught him the benefits of Spider Wire braid when it first came out.

      How are you getting braid to cast far enough? I can cast well...put braid on and I cast like a toddler. Sucks and I hate it.

    • @Im-mv6bf
      @Im-mv6bf 3 роки тому +5

      idk how since casting braid is easier and better. Perhaps you have braid that is too heavy for the reel/rod. lighter line, regardless and material cast better than heavier line. maybe your line is bottom heavy (meaning more line is collecting at the bottom of the spool), its better for your spool to be top heavy for casting ability.

    Love my spinning rigs. I’ll be working on my baitcaster skills this year. When I club fished I was a co-angler and I found my spinning setup allowed me to better fish around the boat owner... he’d be getting dibs on the flipping, pitching, etc. and I’d wind up working the other side with a wacky or Texas rig. It’s all good and I learned years ago to adapt and overcome! Great tips... I love braid😎 but in Florida we mostly tied direct instead of using a leader. Our water is usually dark and we often horse in a two pound bass with four pounds of grass!😀

    Yep. Loose line will get under your spool and into your gears. A pain and fraught with peril if you have to take it apart at the lake! Also, make sure you spool your line with the line coming off the storage spool in the same direction your spool turns. Not all brands come off counter-clockwise when the label is up. I learned that the hard way.

    Great tips mate. A properly used spinning reel is great. I use them for my carp rods. Generally speaking, they are non-problematic and easy. Love your presentation mate.
    Tip one - Done that. Don't do it anymore. Once was enough. Tip 2 - Done that, will always do that. Braid is on everything I use. Tip 3 - I am in the habit of retrieving with the line between thumb and forefinger to prevent slack line hitting the spool. I do it with baitcasters too. Nothing kills a fishing day faster than the birdsnest which loose line on a baitcaster makes! tip 4 Feathering the spool is a great way to control the flight, Gotta be careful not to be too heavy handed though as it will swing the flight of the cast or drop short. Tip 5 - Learn to feather the spool and add finger drag to the spool, you get to fish a light drag and control is not lost, if you need to pull a fish up, you can. Fight the fish on the rod, not the drag. Drag is a tool, not the be all and end all.

    In regards to braid. I found normal braids suck for casting. I recently discovered flouro coated braid and man, that stuff flies even light lures.
    Also properly lubricating braid line when spooling it up the first time I learned is very helpful.

    Great tips. One more. I have had to help people with severely twisted line. I mean severely twisted, even braid. Took me a while but realized that when they were either hung up or playing a large fish, their drag was set too loose. I their excitement to land a hot fish they would crank and crank without bringing in line. Or in their frustration getting hung up, they again would crank and crank on that reel. They did not know with each turn they were twisting and twisting their line. It takes some time and several times cutting off badly twisted line, for them to understand the concept. If you hear the drag sounding off... stop cranking! LOL. And if you get hung up, tighten your drag all the way, or as many of us have learned, wrap the line around your arm and pull it free. With braid you have to be careful not to do this on bare skin as it can cut you easily. Most times I have a longsleeved shirt and this works. Hope this helps others.

    When I was four years old my Dad taught me how to fish. I used my Maternal Grandfathers rod and reel. Grandpa was a union activist in the 40's & 50's at the northern pulp & paper mills of Thunder Bay (then, Port Arthur). His idea of a family vacation was to drive the family in a black Ford down a logging road. Turn at the first available field. And keep going. One time he strapped a raft together to float the car across a river.
    My Grandfather taught my Dad how to fish. I like spending time with the men in my family.
    I bought my fishing license yesterday. I got my second vaccine today. In two weeks I'm fishing the Ottawa behind Parliament Hill.

    Debo,
    Greats tips, Guilty, I have used the same logic, just a little more. End result wind knots and birds nest. For any line especially a Poly/Flouro based, tension when spooling is critical. Thanks for the tip about closing the bail with your free hand not the handle and pulling the slack out. Not many mention that piece. I feather using my cupped free hand it feels the same as using my thumb on a bait caster if not better, it also allows for smooth control of the outgoing line.

    I’d like to mention the value of using filler on your spool.
    You use less line, so you can use better, more expensive line.
    It also helps set you up for having the right amount of line on the spool, every time.
    You also dont have half a spool full of essentially “dead” line buried at the bottom, material you’ve wasted money on.
    You can swap line around so the stuff at the bottom gets used, but I just prefer to keep a Dacron filler on the spool.

    great tips Debo. I would also add that when you are putting on new line on the spool that you put good tension on it. I've wound new line on my spinning reel semi-loosely and wind knots occurred. I stripped all the line off and relined it but under tension and made a world of difference. It all ties into 1 of your mistakes about reeling in loose line.

    Need to work on my braid game. I hate leaders so I avoid braid on my spinning reels. Maybe I will dedicate a spinning setup for braid this coming year. I agree with all the other tips.

    Great advice Debo. I can also recommend using a cheap mono backing before spooling with braid so you don't need 300 yds. of braid to spool a reel.

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman 3 роки тому

      Definitely. Apart from economy, you need to back with mono or the braid will slip on the spool and you won't be able to wind in. The mono provides a grip.

      @@AndrewFishman There is an easy way to tie braid to spool so there is no slip. I actually use cheap braid as a backing on my baitcaster and spool with InvisX. The braid backing will add weight as a backing for further casting. I would post a link on a video but not sure if that is appropriate. You basically tie an Arbor knot and then 4 rotating half hitches.

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman 3 роки тому

      @@chatterbait-dave5620 I just use mono and tie a simple uni knot, then a locked full blood knot to tie the mono to the braid. Been doing it for 30 years. It works well enough, but I will definitely check out the method you are talking about. I like to learn new things all the time :) Thanks for letting me know about it. Post a link to the video on any of my vids if you want. I don't mind. Will even pin it to help others out :) Don't know if it is appropriate to mention my stuff, but I am sure Debo won't mind too much.

      @@AndrewFishman Some Pros use a braid backing to fluorocarbon, that is where I picked up on this technique as they state is casts further and also saves money. Google braid as backing on baitcaster and you will get some videos on this. Use 40-50lb braid as the backing. I personally spool half the reel with braid then the rest with InvisX Fluro.
      This is the best video on how to tie braid backing. Also can work for a Spinning reel as well.

      @@chatterbait-dave5620 I never really worry about distance on the caster too much, it is an accuracy rod for me. The spinners are for casting distance. Rarely do I cast even half the distance that I can cast with my casters. However, I guess it could help when casting the micro jigs I throw around on the baitcaster. I often use small plastics and very small jig heads or bead sinkers, less than a couple of grams (1/16 oz + tail weight). I can see the theory behind it lightening the reel. Thanks for sharing it with me. The other thing I could come unstuck on is using my casters with the brakes off and spool tension backed off as far as possible. How much does it affect the initial acceleration of the reel would be the real thing I would have to test out?
      I might try it on my Daiwa Silver Wolf ultralite outfit when I need to respool.

    yea but Debo about what you said about braid i see braid as spider wire so i use Monofilament which as a result of using monofilament i have no problems with monofilament. Just recently had to throw out a spinning reel and purchased a new spinning reel. Looking forward to cleaning out my backpack tackle box and using my new reel. Thanks to Debo i know what no to do. thanks Debo for the time you spent making this video.

    I’ve gone fishing a few times with my buddy and his dad. Generally using old mono on an open reel. I always got frustrated with birds nests, wind knots, etc… My long distance girlfriend finally got to move up by me, so I decided to finally get into fishing more, since she enjoys it as well. She showed me spider wire braid, and it killed all my problems with open reel fishing. I haven’t gotten to actually fish on it yet, but just from doing some practice casts in the yard with a weight, I can confidently say I doubt I’ll ever go back to mono or flouro unless I’m in a pinch. I did, however, pick up some flouro for leaders.

    I agree with you on all but you should add that you should not reel when a fish is taking line it will cause line twist. I've been fishing for 65 years and on a spinning reel I use my finger on the spool for my drag. Tight lines. Bob T.

    I wish I had watched this video earlier on, I had a ton of issues with my line jumping over and getting stuck over the reel and then I would reel and it would overlap it. It’s not like a bait cast where I can just undo it in a few seconds. Since this started happening to me so much, I started manually pulling the slack back right after I dropped the bail. It makes all the difference in the world and I always catch my line before it gets tangled on the handle or under the reel because of too much slack when casted. I never had this issue until I started using braid but the secret is to always watch the reel after casting just like you would with a bait caster

    I’ve been using my Mitchell 300 and Garcia Conolon rod for 45 years with the reel on top, reeling backwards. Nothing has ever been damaged. I understand it wasn’t designed to be used that way, but it has always felt more natural for me to reel with my right hand. I’ve caught ALOT of fish.......

    i have gotten to the point where im just accurate with spinning reels as baitcasters. i have hurt my finger before feathering a long cast on a spinning combo... fishing in a river for catfish using a 3oz weight to cast into a downed tree. my pinky ended up catching a loop as i moved my hand in to feather the line

    I just got a small spinning combo for fishing blue gills and such. I have it spooled up with 4 lb mono. I never would have thought to put braid on it. What size braid should I use and how long of a leader? Good tips. If you're not fishing I would like to see more vids like this instead of unboxings. I love the "Embrace the dink" shirt!!

    Another pro of using braid - I've been using the same braid on one of my reels for 4 years..... when it starts to look worn, spool it from your reel onto another reel so the good braid on the bottom goes to the top of the new spool. Its like having new braid all over again. And if you use cheap mono to fill up your reel about halfway, then fill it the rest of the way with braid you're saving a lot of money on line. And yeah you cast about 50% farther on braid from a spinning reel. Also no line twist... which can pretty much end your day if you only have one rod with you.

    Great video thanks, in jew Zealand we use soft plastics for sea fishing which we got through berkley from the USA ( thanks). The best line by miles i have used for our type of fishing in sea water up to 100 feet, is berkley fireline original. Its a USA fused braid which never gets wind knots or tip wraps. I use 8lb for sea fishing and 4lb for fresh water fishing. Thanks for the tips
