This is the first video of yours I have watched, and I subbed right away not because of the content, but because as a dad who takes his young kids fishing whenever I can I loved and cracked up at the banter between you and your boy. Can tell I found another good dad, and I’m gonna watch more. Thanks for the laughs, and also for the great tips!
Hey Dylan, I'm really grateful for this comment, as you can see I've gotten a lot of negative feedback on this video due to guys thinking I'm being mean to my son...I'm glad you get it. Big Mike and I have a blast fishing together which you'll see in many videos and most of the time we're ripping on each other, lol I appreciate the sub and thanks so much for watching! 👊
@@TackleJunky81 I dont think its mean to tell your kid "I cant work with this" in the most understandable way. I thought the same thing. He held that camera right where it needed to be. I would have him be my camera man any day. Dad made the instructions very easy to follow and understand. I am a woman, and I know how to fish pretty good, but never had to handle my own gear. So this was great!
The best part of the video is the camera work. Great job Mike!!! Forget all the negative, condescending and unnecessary chirps from that bone holding the rod.
Mike did Great!!! The only reason people would give you a thumbs down is because of your lack of trust and constant questioning and complaining of Mike's help. I gave you a thumbs up for the video, but you should trust your son a lot more!
*Nice reel so far **enjoyable.fishing** recommend used it for about an hour after getting it from Amazon and functioned flawlessly. Very smooth retrieve and the anti reverse is perfect. Feels like a reel that would be double the price.*
Video was actually shot really well, don’t be so hard on your kid. He did an excellent job and you can tell he’s trying really hard. It’s just UA-cam man. If you taught him well (and from the looks of the footage you have) then you have nothing to worry about.
Mike we love your camera skills! I’m a huge bass fisherman and love the content, you line your spinning reels exactly the same way I do! But I stop every like 15 seconds to keep checking for line twist
I have an electric line spooler and I can put the line on the spool without twists. One thing I realized is when you pull line off the spool, for each loop that comes off you get a twist between the spool and the end of line. You put a lure on and make a 100' cast, and say your spool diameter is 4", you have 300 twists from the spool to that lure. When you pull your lure out of the water to make a cast, several twists come out. In short order you end up with that first 100' off the spool being twisted back onto the spool...especially after your first line break. When you let the spinning reel be a spinning reel, the twists will be on the spool and not between the spool and lure. Best way is to pull the line off the filler spool with a pencil through the hole allowing it to turn as you would a level wind reel. Most tangles come from getting slack on the spool when closing the bail allowing a loop to get under a previous loop.
Man props to you. I’ve watched a few different ones and this is by far the best. As a father that takes his sons fishing when ever I can it was great to see you with Mike. Keep it up man.
Thank you Chris! Big Mike is in a lot of my videos actually and we have a blast cracking jokes at each other. If you look at the comments here most of these guys think I'm being rude and that's so not the case...just having a good time joking around with my boy. Appreciate you! 👊
What a great video and videographer! I always thought the line had to come off the filler spool in large loops. I would do that and they eventually got smaller so I flipped the filler spool around or had the line come off straight at the reel. I ALWAYS got line twists and lost so many lures while casting because of line twist and knots! I used your method of following the line coming off the filler spool to the bail rotation and it worked!!! No more line twist! Thank you for a great video and from one father to another it is great to see a kid fishing and involved in the outdoors!!!!!
Lessons learned from this vid: how to better spool reel and not to prioritize my videos over my son’s videoing skills. You owe Mike a week of straight encouragement.
15 min ago, i wasn't sure what i was doing, watched your video and now i have new line on the pole with no issues.believe the most critical tip i learned was which direction to set the spool so as not to twist the line. Thnx to u and young cameraman
Big Mike did an awesome job of video on and thank you for showing me how to restring a rod I'd forgotten I haven't fished in so long it's unreal once again awesome job
Popped up on my feed , as a soon to be dad this was great ! My father never real taught me anything with fishing so this makes me happy knowing it can be done !
One big twist problem is when no line is being recovered but the angler continues to reel. This puts twist in the line. To fix a twisted line drag your line behind the boat at full speed without anything tied to the terminal end and the drag on the line will straighten the twist out. Do that at the end of every day and you will have a perfectly spooled reel.
@@JB-tz9pi What he is saying, is let out your line and let the twists come out, and then reel it back in. But that is contradictory to the way this video says to spool your reel. With a spinning reel, you will either have twists between the spool and the end of the line, or twists on the spool that come out when you cast leaving no twists between the spool and the end of the line. This video shows how to put line on the spool with little twists...which reverses itself in short order with each cast when your lure spins when you lift it from the water...or after your first line break.
@@JB-tz9pi I understood it to mean that the angler is cranking but the fish is still pulling line because of the drag settings. Line is going out, but the angler is cranking it in, hence not recovering line. I may have misunderstood it, but I do know that will create a ton of line twist.
I'm glad I watched this video as my bail is spinning CLOCKWISE... and all the other videos told me to put the line on counterclockwise without mentioning the reel direction...

Thanks for the excellent video. I'm not much of a fisherman but I might try some spring fishing somewhere here in Michigan. Took out the rod which I haven't used in about 20 years and replaced the old line on my spinning reel. Your video was priceless. Thanks.....

Well done. Can't knock a man and his son making fishing tutorials together. One thing I would say though. The line twist at the end. If you want to go to the extreme of letting all you line off the reel on the water, don't have a lure on the end. Just use the line itself. It will naturally untwist while reeling back in. Wish I knew this a ways back. Lol, yeah if I spooled up twisted I ended up trolling my whole reel spool behind the boat to untwist it. Pain in the arse. Great video!
Video was very watchable and informative. I swear, I've lined spinning reels since I was 6, and never had an issue. Just restrung one of my favorite reels with 10 pound mono about a month ago, and it's been a nightmare with line twists. Had to go back to basics and relearn what I did wrong. Your little makeshift spool tensioner is very clever too. Wing nut and a bolt through a piece of wood. Very useful! Subcribed!
The reason they say go with label up is they load them so it comes of the spool correctly with the label up. But good point for those that didn't know about how to load a spinning feel with a large spool. And "Big Mike" did a great job with the camera.
Excellent man. The tackle shop has been spooling mine wrong for years i see. No wonder i hated mono and fluoro so much. Thanks for this awesome tip. Threw away so much line due to bad spooling. I also use kvd line conditioner.
Thank you… I haven’t been fishing in decades and just picked up a new rod, reel, and little fishing kayak. You and big Mike likely just saved me from endless tangles 😁
Big mike did good. I just put 30 lb line on 2 new reels and both had way too many twists. The drag was tight so I had no reel spool turning. I did the first one with the line coming off the spool counter clock wise and got a lot of twists. About half way through the first reel l turned the spool over and got twice as many twists. Oh well. Maybe it was because of using 30 lb test line? After completing spooling of one reel I tied the line to a tree, let all the line out and stretched the line tight (maybe 5 or 10 lbs of pull for a minute) then I held the line tight while reeling in the line. After loading them I set the spools in hot water for 10 minutes. I threw a 1 oz swivel 6 or 8 times and removed 50 feet of line to stop line jumping off the reel. Thanks the video was helpful.
Yeah, a 30lb line is going to have a good amount of memory unless it's braid. Next time on the water let all your line out and just reel it back in with a little tension on your line. Appreciate you watching! 👊
Great video and kudos to the camera man(boy) he has a great future in cinematography. Some of my best memories are of the times with my sons fishing and surfing.
great video . I learned a few things on your presentation . Also , what great idea for the line holder . At the same time give Mike credit for his help , he is a great kid .
This doesn’t need to take 8 minutes but good advice given. prefer that the line come off the spool counter-clockwise. The reason for this is because when you cast a spinning reel like my Abu Garcia Cardinal 804, the line comes off clockwise. By having the line come off the line spool counter-clockwise, it helps tame some of the line twist. Keeping tension on the line, I begin to wind the reel handle and fill the reel spool. Keep an eye on the reel spool to make sure that the line is filling the spool evenly and fill the spool within 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch from the edge. Too much or too little line will affect the reel’s performance. Once the reel is spooled, cut the line from the remaining line in the package and tie on your favorite lure.

Big Mike did an awesome job!! Loved it!

I totally agree great job big Mike and you too dad! You will miss those days one day dad
Always good to refresh my memory! God bless, Stay safe, Tight lines! - Hedge
We appreciate you watching! 👊
