At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

*Nice reel so far **enjoyable.fishing** recommend used it for about an hour after getting it from Amazon and functioned flawlessly. Very smooth retrieve and the anti reverse is perfect. Feels like a reel that would be double the price.*

One of the on the water fixes is to remove everything from your line. Start your motor and idle away while paying out your line. After you pay out about 12’ of line it will pay out smoothly. Empty the spool, close the bail and rewind your line. The difference is amazing. Works on casting and spinning reels. Magic!

Great advice and line clearing method. Thank you taking the time to explain this and share it. It has always amazed me that more fishermen do not know about this clearing technique.
What I see most often that causes the line twist in the first place is reeling in against the against the drag as it is letting line out. Two of the most common things that contribute to the line twist problem are as follows. #1 is by setting the drag too loose and having the spool spin freely while reeling in. #2 is caused by trying to reel in to gain line on a bigger fish while the drag is actually working and letting the fish run a bit to tire it.
Never reel in while the drag is letting out line, or you will be adding extra twist to the line and creating this problem. Fixed spool reels, like spinning reels, due to the way the bail wraps the line around the spool add some twist to the line due to their design, compared to a revolving spool reel like a baitcaster which does not create this line twist. Reeling against the drag multiplies this inherent twist exponentially, and will haunt you when you go to make your next cast by causing the dreaded "birds nest".
I see people do this all the time, setting the drag way too loose hoping to spare the line when a fish lunges or begins a run. You can hear it happening when reeling in. It will add the "line out" higher-pitched fine click sound to any other sounds that the reel is making, like the soft click from the anti-reverse. I see it and hear it even on many of the fishing videos that get posted on UA-cam, and then they wonder why they get a birds nest on their very next cast. If you listen carefully for the extra, higher-pitched click of the drag releasing and watch the spool spin, letting out line at the same time the fisherman is trying to reel in, you will see and hear what I mean.
I always pay close attention to my drag settings and never reel against the drag, and I have not had a birds nest or tangle in decades after I figured out, as a kid, what was causing the extra twist and the tangles that I had been getting on occasion. I hope this helps someone out there to help avoid the line twist tangles in the first place.

Great tip! I've had much less of a problem with my spinning gear line twist since I've learned to close the bail by hand instead of engaging the real with the handle. It seems that it's a habit to look at the spool for any line twist before you cast when you start closing the bail by hand. Saves on wear & tear with the reel's gears too.

I have a huge issue with this on a 2000 series daiwa reel on my 5ft unltra light I use for wading streams. I thought maybe something was wrong with the reel but this makes sense. I throw 1/64th oz jigs on this thing so slack was the main culprit, but I never put 2 and 2 together with the line looping over the top of the reel. This is a huge help. Thanks!!!
