I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
*Nice reel so far **enjoyable.fishing** recommend used it for about an hour after getting it from Amazon and functioned flawlessly. Very smooth retrieve and the anti reverse is perfect. Feels like a reel that would be double the price.*
Glad to hear it!
Thank you, thank you. Sure wish I knew this tip decades ago. Almost can’t wait for it to happen so I can try it.
It’s almost enjoyable when it happens now
Well said ! I like your thinking !
I think this tip is going to save seals in Namibia, and decrease the workload of the 'Seal Rescue' team. :)
You have no idea how much money you just saved me. I just started fishing a couple of weeks ago, so I definitely know that this will take me a long way. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Thanks Matt that's one of the most valuable tips probably ever in the history of fishing videos LOL but seriously
Haha I agree!
Damn Matt, where have you been my whole life, I have had that exact issue no telling how many time and have never had that easy of an outcome. You Sir are going to save me some epic meltdowns in the boat! Thank you so much for sharing this, one of the best tips ever given by a pro!
Thanks for the support!
Been using spinning gear since the 70's, tournament fished for 20+ years... Never saw this trick. Thanks for posting!!! Probably the best tip I've seen that didn't have me digging out a card for Bass Pro or Tackle warehouse.
Glad to help!
Oh. My. Goodness!!! I’ve just taught my wife how to fish and use a spincaster. She had worn a path in my bass boat, stern to bow, bringing me a “rat’s nest” to untangle. Thank you so much.
Love it!
This is a super underrated video. That's problem that plagues everyone and such a simple fix. I've never once thought to do that. I switched to BFS for all but long distance stuff because of line twist problems. Seriously man, thanks for sharing this!
No problem!
This is not the video I was talking about. But it was the one thumbnailed at the end of the video. And is exactly what I needed. The kid blew up 2 of my Spinners that now I'm headed to buy more braid. Thanks for the tips
Glad it helped!
One of the on the water fixes is to remove everything from your line. Start your motor and idle away while paying out your line. After you pay out about 12’ of line it will pay out smoothly. Empty the spool, close the bail and rewind your line. The difference is amazing. Works on casting and spinning reels. Magic!
Brilliant! This could save me literally HOURS when I take the kids out fishing. 🙏
Haha! I know the feeling!
OMG I spend so much time in the spring taking care of my wifes spinning rods when this happens to her. I dont know how I missed this tip but I will be using it again and again. WOW best ever tip
its a good one!
Wow...52 years old and I've been consumed in fishing since I was a teen., and never new this. Thanks!
Most anglers have never heard of this unfortunately
Great advice and line clearing method. Thank you taking the time to explain this and share it. It has always amazed me that more fishermen do not know about this clearing technique.
What I see most often that causes the line twist in the first place is reeling in against the against the drag as it is letting line out. Two of the most common things that contribute to the line twist problem are as follows. #1 is by setting the drag too loose and having the spool spin freely while reeling in. #2 is caused by trying to reel in to gain line on a bigger fish while the drag is actually working and letting the fish run a bit to tire it.
Never reel in while the drag is letting out line, or you will be adding extra twist to the line and creating this problem. Fixed spool reels, like spinning reels, due to the way the bail wraps the line around the spool add some twist to the line due to their design, compared to a revolving spool reel like a baitcaster which does not create this line twist. Reeling against the drag multiplies this inherent twist exponentially, and will haunt you when you go to make your next cast by causing the dreaded "birds nest".
I see people do this all the time, setting the drag way too loose hoping to spare the line when a fish lunges or begins a run. You can hear it happening when reeling in. It will add the "line out" higher-pitched fine click sound to any other sounds that the reel is making, like the soft click from the anti-reverse. I see it and hear it even on many of the fishing videos that get posted on UA-cam, and then they wonder why they get a birds nest on their very next cast. If you listen carefully for the extra, higher-pitched click of the drag releasing and watch the spool spin, letting out line at the same time the fisherman is trying to reel in, you will see and hear what I mean.
I always pay close attention to my drag settings and never reel against the drag, and I have not had a birds nest or tangle in decades after I figured out, as a kid, what was causing the extra twist and the tangles that I had been getting on occasion. I hope this helps someone out there to help avoid the line twist tangles in the first place.
thanks for watching!
I’ve never seen anyone else show this on UA-cam! Now come springtime, I’ll know exactly what to do instead of getting frustrated and wasting time on the water. Thanks Matt!
it works so good!
Super tip! I've been using spinning reels for years and never knew this. All I was ever told was to flip the bail by hand.
Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching!
This vid deserves a Grammy. He spitting knowledge no one knew.
Haha! Thanks!
Just saw this video from five months ago. What an Ah Ha moment. Incredible!! I have been using spinning reels for 48 years. I have faced this situation for everyone of those years. I have been taking the spool off to resolve. In my kayak, this is never fun. I cannot wait to use this method - you know I am going to have the opportunity. Thank you for providing this information!
Glad it helped! Makes it almost fun when they do happen
Wow! So simple....could have used that tip this past Saturday. Had to put away a spinning rod i use for dropshots during a tournament.
You bet!
Dude that's the ticket !
Had a nasty braid wrap around the spool shaft this weekend which caused a minor meltdown and the backlash was involved too.
This will cure it!
That was the Most Informative Instruction that I have ever heard for a Spinning Reel Line Ballup.
That's a First for me. 👍👍👏👏
Glad it was helpful!
@@MattStefanFishing

Glad it was helpful!
I cant believe what i am seeing ! I have pulled off the entire spoo[. Cant give you enough thanks. I will every one of your shows.

It’s very satisfying to do it!
Thank you ! Matt. I wish I knew this earlier .You are right . This should be the first lesson people should learn if they use spinning reel
agreed
The very FIRST thing I tell people is to get used to manually closing the bail.
Never seen that before. I had this happen to me the other day , made a real mess. I put the rod down and grabbed another rod. Thank you so much. I will definitely do that next time.
No problem!
This has happened to me so much and I have had wasted so much time trying to fix it. Thank you

Nice!
I wish you posted this last week. I was fishing with a spinning rod all weekend, bass opener where I live in Canada and I had my fresh powerpro do exactly that. Lol. Great tip thanks
Sorry to hear that
This is the best tip I ever seen on UA-cam videos . Subscribed .
Thanks for the sub!
Great tips. Much appreciated from Western Kentucky. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great tip! I've had much less of a problem with my spinning gear line twist since I've learned to close the bail by hand instead of engaging the real with the handle. It seems that it's a habit to look at the spool for any line twist before you cast when you start closing the bail by hand. Saves on wear & tear with the reel's gears too.
Closing the bail by hand helps a lot!
One of the best, if not the best tip I have ever seen on UA-cam. Thanks Matt!
Glad you enjoyed it! One of my favorites!
Wow, I wish I would have know about that 58 years ago. So many headaches that could have been prevented! Thanks Matt! Can’t believe I’ve never seen this before! Great tip!

I am watching this video for a reason…….I get that line over the spool issue but usually flip the line back down. I just recently lost 2 reels in the boat due to bird nests. Thanks for the tip!

One of my favorite tips!
Cool tip. I have never heard of this. I will try it next time. Thanks.

Incredible, incredible tip! Oh, the wasted time trying to painstakingly untangle the mess - usually when the steelhead are just starting to turn on, and I end up missing that window of opportunity! I'm secretly itching to try out your tip, while hoping I never have to. But, we all know that next birds nest is inevitable! THANKS in advance!
It’s almost enjoyable now when it happens!

You and me both!
Thank you Matt. That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing!
No problem!
First time I've seen this tip - thanks!
Not many people know about it
OMG. Thanks.
Never thought about doing that.
It works great!
I have a huge issue with this on a 2000 series daiwa reel on my 5ft unltra light I use for wading streams. I thought maybe something was wrong with the reel but this makes sense. I throw 1/64th oz jigs on this thing so slack was the main culprit, but I never put 2 and 2 together with the line looping over the top of the reel. This is a huge help. Thanks!!!
No problem
Great tip Matt ! Then what I do to get line twist out is I let 95% of the line out when idling the boat slow with nothing on the line for just a couple minutes.
Thanks for sharing
That is the best tip I have ever seen!
It really is a top 5 tip for sure!
Seriously? Been fishing hard-core for 40yrs and didn't know that, got my wife into fishing a few years ago and believe me that happens.thank you
