Moving back to Alaska after spending 2 years in Texas (I was in alaska 8 years prior to that) and sometimes I wonder why I ever left Alaska in the first place. I love the outdoors and living in a winter wonderland. In Texas the winters are comfortable but not near as beautiful since there's no snow. And the humidity makes me feel sick all of the time.
@@alaska_realtor seasonal depression. Had a suicidal episode and left eagle river in 2018 to live with extended family in Texas and my husband who was born and raised in alaska came down to marry me. Now that I'm mentally healthier and am more aware of my depression I feel like I can handle living in Alaska again with the proper support and making sure I get out and do things in the winter. I was originally up there as a teenager due to my father's air force career but now that he's retired he is back in Texas with my mom to be near their families. My husband and I hate the south since it's so hot and we feel like the people aren't as kind to outsiders.
After 39 years of living in Arizona, I am ready to get out of the heat and pollution of Phoenix and am considering a move to Alaska, as I am a huge outdoors person--either there or NW Montana or Northern Idaho but I like Alaska more. I am in excellent shape at 59 years of age so I figure I better get this big adventure underway before I get too old and end up sitting around pounding cans of Ensure and thinking "I sure wish I would have given it a try." The only catch will be work--I have to find work (I am a non-courtroom attorney by trade but not licensed in Alaska) so that's the domino that has to fall. Question: I would be bringing my 2 dogs (who are all for the move, by the way)--can you bring dogs on the ferry? My guess is probably not for liability reasons but maybe they have an exception for cool dogs . . .
Great question and yes you certainly can. You just have to crate them in your car and you get to walk them around a few times a day. The only pets you can't bring on the ferry are rodents of any kind.
Glad I found your channel. Been thinking about moving to Alaska to get away from the heat and the crowd. My boy(6) told me the other day “let’s get a cabin in Alaska!” 😂 I’m doing some research to see which city in Alaska would be best to raise my boy. Which City would you suggest?
Ms 222tutu That’s awesome! A lot of people really like Eagle River and Palmer. Both have a small town feel and access to all things Alaska (4 wheeling, fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, etc.) without being too far off the grid. I have a tour of Eagle River on the channel now and I’ll have Palmer up in the near future. Is there something specifically y’all are looking for?
Ms 222tutu If y’all want to chat about the area, I’d be happy to talk a bit about it. It’s a big decision so I want to make sure y’all can an informed one :)
We plan to come up July of 2021. We are going to rent a 1 way R.V. tow our small SUV and drive up. It seemed to be the cheapest way to bring up a few belongings, and the 2 dogs +2kids. The ferry is awesome but expensive and harder to bring items. Flying is even more expensive because you got to ship up car / belongings.
Driving isn't a bad option at all for getting up here. Keep on eye on what Canada does for covid moving forward. It likely won't be an issue by then, but they're pretty draconian about their rules right now for people driving through.
The ferry to Anchorage across the gulf is not operating in summer 2024 due to staff shortage. And the ferry is not a good option if you have pets because I read that the pets must remain in the vehicle and the owner is only allowed I think 1 hour every so many hours to come down to the vehicle deck and take care of them - feeding, walking dogs, etc. They are not allowed on the people decks or cabins. Driving the Alcan seems to not be a real good idea during winter.
Last time we shipped a 20ft container through Alaska marine lines it was 8k for under 10klbs. The last time we made the drive, with hotels and fuel was around 600..probly twice that now..
Wild, my husband was just talking about how much it costs to move to and live in Alaska yesterday. Its not for me, because of the cold, but I'm sure I'd LOVE all the beautiful nature there!
You can always become what we call a snowbird where you live in the summer and go somewhere warm during the winter. Not a bad option if you’re not into winter sports!
I just called the ferry and you can ship up to 40 foot trailer 8 feet wide 13.5 tall and a truck up to 35 tons its about 4-5 k one way from bellingham to whittier
Disabled Veteran looking to escape the Californian overtake of Montana 😆. Are they flooding Alaska as well? I am definitely moving there just need to get things figured out.
My husband and I are planning to drive some of our things to our property in Alaska in March. Are there any other ways to find out more about crossing the boarder? Thank you
Best thing I can say is to check out the border website. That's the best source of info, other than talking with people who have recently gone through.
it’s march. i’d love to know your experience with the canadian border. my wife and i are going to be moving to alaska within the next year. and we will be crossing into canada along with a truck load of stuff.
If you take the ferry system are you able to tow a trailer onto the ferry. when I plan on moving I plan on taking a tractor and a side by side that I want to either have shipped via shipping crate or trailer up myself. Also I will be bringing a bunch of tools like welders Mills and drill presses. what do you believe to be the best way to move things like these
I would call the ferry system, but by and large you should be fine with bringing them on the ferry. Circuses ship elephants, etc on the ferry so I can't imagine you'd have too many issues there.
you can drive the roads if you are in a good off road capable vehicle with some high end all terrain/off road tires. and not blow a tire. that being said definitely bring a spare or 2 just in case. nothing is assured and it's better to be safe than sorry.
Ferry will be the option for me How to get year round job in Alaska? When u aren’t from Alaska? As an outsider? No the Fishing, neither the oil industry. WHSES or factories jobs, no seasonal jobs
Looking to move to Alaska from Texas. Looking to move to the actual biggest state! I have one bedroom of things to move, so I would probably take the ferry.
I would probably take the ferry system but are you referring to the Alaska state ferry system or any of the numerous sparge/shipping companies that would ship a vehicle up there?
@xktwnxl4zlx213 Unimaginable beautiful and scary. I was alone, sleeping in my truck, and I was towing a uhaul and a relatively new truck I'm paying down and I was terrified I'd drive off a clife in Canada and lose everything I owned. Gas is very expensive spent about 2k roughly in gas. I lost signal for 3 days in Canada and nothing bad happened but it's like you know anything bad could happen you know it was certainly an experience. The alcan highway will destroy a vehicle if your not careful the frost heaves are like huge speed bumps you hit at interstate speeds. The entire drive from Alabama to Anchorage was 9 days but I was bad sick for one day near montana and had to get a hotel
Can you take your firearms or ammo in a crate via the ferry since you aren't stopping in a foreign country until you arrive in Alaska? Same thing for any precious metals.. Any recommendations which ferry or shipping company to use?
It depends on how many firearms and ammo you have. I believe that you can, but usually shipping stuff to a gun shop is far easier. I've had a lot of good luck with Alaska Terminals.
As you've made the trip a number of times, which would you say is better? To take all my stuff with me, or to get rid of it and start new in Alaska? I understand it would be more expensive taking my stuff, but just wondering on your opinion of which would be better.
You know, I don't think I've ever driven a dog across Canada. I would call them just to verify, but I don't believe there's anything you'll need. I'd have shot records on hand though.
Marine highway is very expensive. Also depends where you want to go. Haines is not close to anything, leaves you still a long long long drive to Anchorage
Can you please tell me if they still pay you to move to Alaska? I am on disability and want to move out of New York. I love Washington but Alaska is not completely out of the question. I know you have to get used to living in a certain amount of darkness but I don’t know if it is more or less depending where you live? Can you tell me if you know anything about HUD housing or section 8 housing in Alaska? Starting with the first place you mentioned on your video please. Thank you very much
You can get an annual PFD of about $800-$1200 lately per person, so not really. There is a lot more darkness in the northern parts of the state around Fairbanks. South central around Anchorage is more mild with south east AK being more or less like Seattle in climate. As for HUD housing, I'm not going to be the best resource on specific questions about those areas so check out the HUD websites.
@@alaska_realtor thank you! As long as there are no bees lol!! Many many years ago when I got married to my first husband we considered moving to Alaska. I have always been drawn to Alaska and Washington around the Seattle area but more in the suburbs where it is a little safer. I live in Ohio and am in my senior year of college wanting to teach. I just recently decided I may want to move to Alaska after I graduate. Do you know the process of getting my teaching license in Alaska?
That's a great question. I personally looked at teaching up here when I first got here and the best thing I can say is that you should get your certs all squared away in your state and try to transfer. When I talked with UAA about transferring all the classes I had to get certified, they wouldn't do it. It's kind of a racket up here, so avoid UAA if at all possible and talk with the board with the state about transferring your license.
What is your recommendation for firearm owners. Ammunition is my concern. I don't want to sell all of my ammunition and rebuy it all due to the extremely crazy prices, not including the higher cost in AK. I know it cannot go across borders.
Really enjoyed your video my husband is from Alaska and hasn’t lived there since before the military. I was wondering about the fairy- which one do you recommend? I have two pets and a car I am wanting to take as well but we don’t know if we should drive the highway or take the fairy.
Hi Jaclyn! That's exciting. The ferry schedule is coming out in a bit, but if you're looking for just better convenience, I would highly favor the ferry. The highway right now is challenging because of all the restrictions you have to adhere to while driving the Alcan. When are you making it up here?
Mr. Jamien, I have a opportunity to transfer and work for the VA HOSPITAL in Anchorage though. Is living working for the VA in alaska financially a safe bet for cost of living ? Or do people benefit more working on a public sector? . We are considering moving from florida , we are a very active family / outdoors adventures is 90% if our life. We have a very active son and just in general love the outdoors. My wife is a nurse so transition for her is no problem but in my case , staying with government work makes the transition easier.
I want to know more about the ferry, how long? Cost? Things I can and cannot bring?? Help lol I’m aiming to go to ketchikan, homer or to anchorage not sure
Gotcha! For that trip, I would plan on minimal $500 and it would likely take 3-4 days from WA. I'm assuming you have a car that you plan to drive from Homer?

Awesome info! Have yet to visit Alaska but I feel its been calling me for years. Born and raised in 🇨🇦. Have been nursing in Texas for 27 years now. Travel nursed all over the USA but unfortunately never got up to Alaska. Married a Texan and you know how hard it is to get them to leave Texas! 🤣. Tired of the heat here and ready for a change of scenery. I currently work at a Children’s ER Providence facility here in West Texas. Will be a few more years before we can retire. Would like a little piece of property with no restrictions on domicile, with good access to the hospital for work. Any recommendations? We also like to hunt and fish.
Yes, I sure do! Dated a few Texans myself. What part of West Texas are you from? I lived in San Angelo for about 10 years. It sounds like you are talking about somewhere in the MatSu Valley, but with such an extensive medical background you would be in high demand in the villages so the state is pretty much your oyster. How remote do you want to go?
@@alaska_realtor well a Big Howdy 🤠 from Lubbock, TX! We are in our early 50’s. Hubby grew up in Corpus Christi where his dad was the city electrician and also owned a sign shop that made the first signs for Whataburger and his family also ranched in Waco. I grew up on the farm in Saskatchewan and lived 2 hours from Saskatoon where I went to University. I was lucky to do a nursing internship in Northern Saskatchewan at LaLoche on the reservation. What a wild and wooly time but I loved it! Got to fly a Piper Navajo plane after we dropped off a patient. The pilot needed to log some flight hours so he had me take the wheel. Crazy Fun! My husband and I love to try different lifestyles. We also fulltimed in an RV for 5 years during our travel nursing days. My ideal life would be to do remote work, travel full time in a Super C and have our home base in Alaska. Our children’s hospital here just got a Trauma surgeon from Alaska- Dr Proctor. You don’t know her do you? 😆. The Eagle River area looks amazing. Small town vibe and beautiful scenery but still close to all the amenities of the big city of Anchorage. We like people but not too close. 🤣Just need an acre give or take to put a cozy cabin on and place to park the RV. Ideally no restrictions.
I want to move to Alaska when I graduate from highschool in 2 years or when I get a car and gas money and a place down there so I don't have to sleep in my car but i like the cold and dark
So hypothetically if you knew a couple having to figure out how to move with cars and some bigger things we can't ditch (cast iron machinery, yes omg) from Atlanta to Palmer... it sounds like maybe shipping things to Washington and then Ferry would be best? Thoughts? Asking for me.. >.
What is the situation on the Canadian border right now in 2022? Are the Canadians treating travelers trying to get from the lower 48 to Alaska the same way the USA just treated Novak Djokovic?
That could be a good option, but it all comes down the details. At that point I would seriously consider just hiring a moving company and let them coordinate that all.
@@alaska_realtor I'm sure it can be kinda pricy. At least a visit one day for sure. I could see myself living year-round though. Could hopefully get a job at a mountain/ farm in the summer. If you have ANY doubts about your vehicle or your navigational skills, the Alcan is not the way to go. Canada is big, and theres not much for services available, and cell signal is a big nope for about 95% of it
Can you bring your pets on the fairy system? Also I know Canada doesn’t allow people with a DUI to enter, and I made that mistake. So I was wondering if you need Canadian permission for the fairy system as well?
It’s possible I could move to Anchorage in the future. I live in Arkansas and to rent a Uhaul from Northeast Arkansas to Anchorage, Alaska, it’s $5600 not incl mileage 😅. I’ll be better off selling all of my belongings and just flying and starting over in Alaska
Fill a container and have it shipped - then take yourself however you choose. It’s about $5000-$6000 to send a container - but you don’t have to worry about hauling it all around yourself…
Which is your favorite option to get up here? What other questions do you have about these routes?
Do you have the link to the ferry information from Seattle to Alaska? Also could you get your car ferried to?

Moving back to Alaska after spending 2 years in Texas (I was in alaska 8 years prior to that) and sometimes I wonder why I ever left Alaska in the first place. I love the outdoors and living in a winter wonderland. In Texas the winters are comfortable but not near as beautiful since there's no snow. And the humidity makes me feel sick all of the time.
I came from Texas before coming up here myself! What made yall move in the first place?
@@alaska_realtor seasonal depression. Had a suicidal episode and left eagle river in 2018 to live with extended family in Texas and my husband who was born and raised in alaska came down to marry me. Now that I'm mentally healthier and am more aware of my depression I feel like I can handle living in Alaska again with the proper support and making sure I get out and do things in the winter. I was originally up there as a teenager due to my father's air force career but now that he's retired he is back in Texas with my mom to be near their families. My husband and I hate the south since it's so hot and we feel like the people aren't as kind to outsiders.
ive lived in alaska 10 years but my parents are moving us to texas
Goecker Group Thank you 🙏
Ms 222tutu If y’all want to chat about the area, I’d be happy to talk a bit about it.
@@alaska_realtor thank you for the heads up!
Good afternoon, sir. Do you happened to know if Ferry system is still not operational due to staffing shortage for winter 2024?
@@xktwnxl4zlx213 No. Now it says the cross-gulf trips are not available because their ocean-class vessel is in dry dock for months of repair.
I love your fortitude and commitment. Did you have a job lined up before moving or how did you find one to suit you once moving to AK?
Last time we shipped a 20ft container through Alaska marine lines it was 8k for under 10klbs. The last time we made the drive, with hotels and fuel was around 600..probly twice that now..
Wild, my husband was just talking about how much it costs to move to and live in Alaska yesterday. Its not for me, because of the cold, but I'm sure I'd LOVE all the beautiful nature there!
We have nature for days!! move up! hahah
You can always become what we call a snowbird where you live in the summer and go somewhere warm during the winter. Not a bad option if you’re not into winter sports!
The ferry route sounds pretty epic.
I just called the ferry and you can ship up to 40 foot trailer 8 feet wide 13.5 tall and a truck up to 35 tons its about 4-5 k one way from bellingham to whittier
Good to know!
Driving sounds best. Can you rent a uhaul and take it to Alaska?
Yup, that's what I did. Just make sure you have as much coverage on it as possible.
Yea I'm glad I started looking into this now lmao because I had no clue howlw expensive it would be to move up there lol
Disabled Veteran looking to escape the Californian overtake of Montana 😆. Are they flooding Alaska as well? I am definitely moving there just need to get things figured out.
I really haven't heard of a lot of Californians moving out this way. The climate is a little less appealing if you were drawn to sunny Cali lol
@@alaska_realtor my thoughts exactly. Thanks for the reply.
The ferry books out in advance!! At this very moment, it’s booked up for the next 5 months.
Probably because the Canadian boarder is very tricky in these current times. But still wanted to give a heads up!
Good call. I've been trying to interview border agents with Canada and people from the AKMH, but they are pretty difficult to track down
My husband and I are planning to drive some of our things to our property in Alaska in March. Are there any other ways to find out more about crossing the boarder? Thank you
Best thing I can say is to check out the border website. That's the best source of info, other than talking with people who have recently gone through.
it’s march. i’d love to know your experience with the canadian border. my wife and i are going to be moving to alaska within the next year. and we will be crossing into canada along with a truck load of stuff.
wonder what the forced health mandate policy is at the moment for americans crossing to go to alaska
@@digitalsalsas it’s ridiculous.
Hey how do I look into taking the ferry way? Can I put my car on the ferry?!
You can take your car and check out the Alaska Marine High System website on the DOT website
Be ready Pay big $$$
you can drive the roads if you are in a good off road capable vehicle with some high end all terrain/off road tires. and not blow a tire. that being said definitely bring a spare or 2 just in case. nothing is assured and it's better to be safe than sorry.
Absolutely!
Can you bring a trailer packed on the ferry? I have researched and I have read the entire vehicle needs to be empty
You can take a trailer worth of stuff on onto the ferry, but I'm not sure what the rules are for an RV kinda trailer.
Ferry will be the option for me
How to get year round job in Alaska? When u aren’t from Alaska? As an outsider?
No the Fishing, neither the oil industry.
WHSES or factories jobs, no seasonal jobs
Great questions AND I've already made a video that answers them. It's set to come out Sept 5. Make sure to tune in! :)
Specifically, the AK Marine Highway.
I'll be driving there from Alabama in May lol.
wow!! How was the drive?! was it worth it? lol
@@maximasforrester8689 Wow!! Thanks for sharing, I'm glad you got to Alaska safe and sound! Congratulations!
Once up in Alaska, is it pretty easy to get from one island to another? Such as Kenai to Sitka?
How about traveling the ferry way with a dog? I plan to move to anchorage within 5 years and I plan to take my boy with me.
Totally doable. I've done it a few times. They stay in the car and you are allowed to walk them a few times a day on the car deck.
@@alaska_realtor what about poop and pee?
What kind of paperwork do you need for the firearms through Canada
By myself, 3 animals. They don't fly. Ferry sounds like an Alaskan cruise ship but cheaper!!
There are World Wide movers as well that will take your items either via connex or regular semi movers
If you take the ferry can you bring dogs? We have 3 dogs, and we are planning to move to Alaska.
Yes, you can certainly take dogs with you on the ferry!
I have a German shepherd if iam drive up to AK is there anything I need to have or do to bring my dog
You know, I don't think I've ever driven a dog across Canada. I would call them just to verify, but I don't believe there's anything you'll need. I'd have shot records on hand though.
All in with the ferry option.
I really enjoyed Alaska when I lived in Valzez it was wonderful and it's time for me to move out of the Mainland👍
You should!
Just found your channel!!! Great video, I have never been to Alaska before but have definitely considered it!!! New subscriber here
Samee Here!
Thanks for watching. This might be a good year with ticket prices being so much lower!
I want to visit one day!
Make it soon! :)
Are the roads safe? I’ve drove in some mountains that made me a nervous reck
That's a very subjective question. I've never felt like I was at risk but it comes down to who's driving I suppose.
I hear Seattle used to be a lot nicer but that it has gone downhill in the past years. Is this correct? North Idaho is beautiful but still too sunny and hot in the summers for me. I have a condition where the sun actually depresses me and the rain keeps me calm! I appreciate your quick response. Have a great weekend and stay safe
Ferry system. Do you pass through Canada customs at all if bringing a gun?
Great video my man! Lets get ya out on a hike here soon we can snag some drones shots
YES! Just say the word. This is going to sound random, but do you have you done paragliding?
@@alaska_realtor haha i have not. i do have a few friends that are all about it tho out here in eagle river. The gear is just to pricey. i have sky dived a few times haha
@@alaska_realtor Thank you!
What is your recommendation for firearm owners. Ammunition is my concern. I don't want to sell all of my ammunition and rebuy it all due to the extremely crazy prices, not including the higher cost in AK. I know it cannot go across borders.
Ship them to a gun shop. That's the easiest way to do it and they will know the ins and outs of the system.
@@alaska_realtor we are looking to move in the next year or so! gotta save some money and see about those travel restrictions.

How much does the boat cost? That sounds fun
Great question, check out my most recent video
Do you enter Canada on the ferry? Wanting to move back to Alaska but can’t drive through Canada because they are requiring you to be vaccinated
Do they require a vaccine? Last I heard they were requiring a covid test. You don't enter Canada when you're traveling via the ferry.
@@alaska_realtor thank you sir
Also, driving up through Washington and Canada is bad for your windshield if you do it through the summer road work.
What about shipping your stuff to alaska? What is the best way to get it there?
I have some good relations with the folks at Alaska Terminals. They would be a good company to check out.
What about busses and trains? I'm looking at all options to travel there.
No busses or trains going there. The Trump administration passed the first steps of a train going to AK, but we'll see if it materializes.
Great video bud. As a fire arm owner I’d have to take the ferry and see some whales!

What part of Alaska piques your interest?
If taking pets via ferry to Alaska with vehicle, are pets allowed in the cabin?
Not in the cabin, no. Pets have to stay in your vehicle and you get to walk them a few times a day
I want to move to Alaska when I graduate from highschool in 2 years or when I get a car and gas money and a place down there so I don't have to sleep in my car but i like the cold and dark
Well then this is going to be a great spot for you then lol just make sure that you come up in the winter if at all possible to visit.
Do they serve food on the ferry?
They sure do. Or you can bring a cooler with you.
So hypothetically if you knew a couple having to figure out how to move with cars and some bigger things we can't ditch (cast iron machinery, yes omg) from Atlanta to Palmer... it sounds like maybe shipping things to Washington and then Ferry would be best? Thoughts? Asking for me.. >.
How far apart are gas stations on the Alcan?
What is the situation on the Canadian border right now in 2022? Are the Canadians treating travelers trying to get from the lower 48 to Alaska the same way the USA just treated Novak Djokovic?
what about shipping a u-haul or pod box and flying?
That could be a good option, but it all comes down the details. At that point I would seriously consider just hiring a moving company and let them coordinate that all.
If I took the ferry system would I be able to drive into anchorage by road?
Yes, most people will go to either Valdez or Whittier if I recall correctly.
Have you driven there in like late March/early April ?
I want to go to Alaska so bad!
