Liked your 12 tips video. I'm 73, drove to Alaska 3 times in the eighties, the first two times on motorcycles, probably 1000 miles of unpaved, partially paved and under construction road, loved every minute of it. I would like to see what's happened to AK in the interim and want to ride up on my BMW sport tourer. Truthfully, how are the roads? Like the last two motorcycle trips, I'll ferry back to either Prince Rupert, B.C. or Seattle, then home to Michigan. Who should I contaact re: reservations (didn't need any last time) and cabin availability on the ferries.

I rode the AlCan on my 1975 BMW R90 (MC) in 1980 when the highway was half dirt. So dusty, so muddy. So doable. So beautiful. Fear not. I hope to do it again next year on the same bike.

More important than having two spares is starting the trip with NEW tires and if the road is bad SLOW DOWN! We drove it 4 years ago in my then 39 year old Ford Pinto and had zero problems. The vast majority of the road condition was good, no different that any other place I have driven, except its more remote. That saying we also had no problem getting gas. We just filled up when we got to 1/2 a tank and never worried about charring extra.

I'm a Canadian who drives from southern Alberta to Whitehorse, Yukon every once in awhile. The road is pretty easy except for construction or repairs. A lot of Americans freak out when they think about this road though, judging by some I have talked to. This guy is pretty good so pay attention. I don't know much about border crossings etc. but extra food and gas is a good thing. I always travel with extra food and gas but never had to use it in an emergency...but it is so comfortable to have.

Driven Whitehorse to Mile zero 100 times winter and summer. Never had a flat. Gas can good idea but the longest stretch between main gas stations is 300 miles, usually much less. You can drive by a gas station that's pricey if you plan a bit. Look at a map, they are free in Yukon

Glad to hear it! For the gas stations, you'll need to make some calls. Some of those stations are seasonal and some of them are having work done and it won't be reflected online. A safe bet is never to let your tank get below half before you start looking for one.

I was told you are given a reasonable amount of time. It’s 24 hours to get through the Yukon but not through all of Canada. It’s impossible to get through Canada in 24 hours. From Coutts, AB to Beaver Creek is 33 hours if you didn’t stop for fuel or hit delays. They are allowing you to get a hotel room as long as you can social distance. White horse is not allowing. In recommend calling ahead. Northern Rockies Lodge will allow US people.

I have driven the ALCAN 5 times. Here is my commentary on the "tips"
tip 1: Either bring an extra tire or be okay with the trip taking extra time. I have had one flat tire on the trip and if there wasn't a full-size spare available it would have been a 5 day wait for a replacement.
tip 2: bullshit hysteria, there is gas at major intervals. Buy a Milepost and study it, if you are going for a long stretch fill up earlier than necessary.
tip 3: Yes. get your paperwork taken care of and check it out in advance.
tip 4: Sure, bring some water and food, but don't go overboard. There are plenty of people on the road and every time I have seen people on the side of the road there are good samaritans ready to help.
tip 5: Not an issue. Yes there are dead spots but there is internet at the gas stations.
tip 6: 100% Milepost is better than the Bible out there.
tip 7: Bring a credit card and know what the currency exchange is on the card.
tip 8: This is expired with the times.
tip 9: Sure, but this is a small number of travelers.
tip 10: Duh - this is international travel. He's stretching this out
    tip 11: See tip 10
tip 12: You should do this with any travel trailer. Not trip specific
Bonus: Not a thing outside of normal life
