- Most American big cities have become more difficult over the last few years due to an increase in crime and homelessness. Some families have decided to leave it all and start anew. Join me as we meet a family from Philadelphia that decided to move to Alaska to start at a new life living off the grid.

@@floridamanofficial Thanks Florida Man!
You know the day's gonna be great when I see a new vid uploaded. Always entertaining, educational and full of adventure.
I saw you in Whittier and wanted to talk to you so badly but felt you would enjoy speaking with the kind people from seamission. Hope you enjoyed your visit.
ya I had elk meat once , ya it was ok , it was a elk burger but I like beef a lot better , beef tastes better , I think beef has a better taste , in terms of taste nothing is better than beef , elk and moose and deer are too lean , beef tastes better and beef does not have a gamy taste , I've never had moose meat , but I've had elk and deer and beef tastes better I think , so anyways bear tastes like shit in case your wondering , bear meat is terrible , why people hunt bears I couldn't tell you , bear meat should be made illegal
This is crazy. I grew up with Anthony in Havertown, PA. Have known his family since I was knee high to a duck. His mom (Featured in this vid) and my mom are pals. This is amazing to see his story gain some traction and attention. And what a wonderful channel to do so! Thanks, Peter.
Cool, seems like great people
Small world out there
I actually live right next to Havertown, so it's pretty cool to read this. Alaska is my eventual goal as well, so maybe we'll form a Delco community up there.
What band was he in?
I love it. Fairbanks girl here… we used to say knee high to a chicken.
Peter, I love how you allow people to tell their stories. You never get in the way. Really enjoyed the Appalachian episodes (I’m from Harlan). Keep it up and thank you 🙏🏻
Peter Santenello, I must say ,you are the best on youtube,UA-cam, suppose I have watched 200 of your episodes,,enjoyed everyone. THANK YOU FOR MANY ,MANY HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT 🎉🎉🎉

Dang!! Rebecca & Peter nailed it about today's society... Peter said.. "I feel like today's society has gone back to 7th grade!". Then Rebecca said.."Which lunch table are you sitting at? And, there's only two!".
They couldn't be more right!! That entire conversation was on point!!

I moved to Alaska over 5 years ago.
If you haven't been in Alaska for the winter, you DON'T know Alaska.
I couldn't believe when they said they leave every winter.
Gotta experience that -30 below 0 weather to be a true Alaskan.
We were here for alot of the below zero temperatures last year.
we leave so I can take care of my In-laws, and so my son can have some memories with them. They're are not mobile and need assistance. They cannot fly here to visit due to their age.
when I go back I'm mainly cooking, cleaning and helping them get up and down, running errands. I had to build them a mother-in-laws suite in their house for the caretakers.
Moving 6,000 miles away takes time & money.
We're leaving the country to afford the medical treatments to have another child.
The "True alaskan" talk is hilarious to me bc I take ice baths for pleasure.

"The struggle makes it sweeter" is the most truthful statement I have ever heard about Alaska. I absolutely love it there.
Most truthful statement about life itself actually.

Well said!
My sister is an Alaskan native . My mom lived in Homer for YEARS. She’d always mail me fur jackets amd moccasins and all my friends didn’t understand that. They’d laugh and call me an Indian girl :( I had a really pretty rabbit fur too :) I loved it. I love this video thisnis exactly how they lived . My mom always made jam too and mailed me homemade jam 3) my step dad was a carpenter amd fisherman . They lived pretty good. I enjoyed this video sooooooooo MUCH . I loved this
My best friend from growing up is Athabascan from Alaska💗 her mom always told us great stories of when she was a small girl growing up in Alaska. However, she did often mention how bored they could get 😆
Notice the mom here, she was talking dudes ear off, and you could tell she hadn't spoke to a real person in a while 😂
Reading this warmed my heart, stay strong buddy
ive learned to embrace my Alaskan Native heritage. I love my fur on my parka my dad used to wear when he went dog sledding.
I worked in Naknek ,Dutch Harbor and Kodiak in the early eighties and found the Alaskan natives to be so gentle, quiet and real compared to all the american fishermen who were so loud and crazy. We went out one night fishing on a small skiff with an Alaskan Native guy,,was a timeless experience,,very precious memory. So much respect for those beautiful families.
Great way to spend my morning before football games start.
As always, I appreciate and value you, Peter. You're doing amazing work and opening my horizons and changing biases that I've had. Sending love from Northwest Arkansas.

Who would pay $500K for that place? These people are delusional.
I just met this family at a wedding and they sent me this link. Instantly, you could feel their warmth. Great people! Free spirits!
I grew up with Anthony and his wonderful family- his deceased sister was my childhood friend. I reconnected with them at her funeral.
Tony and Becca the whole family are some of the most inspirational people I know, watching them reunited in Alaska and fulfilling their dreams is joyful!
As a Havertown native, THIS.
I dont know them outside of this video, but I can say I wish there were more people like them. Anthony and his family seem like some cool people.
wish them luck...but that house...needs to say the least...alot of work. I live 200km north of the artic circle, winters are nice but you got to have a good place to live in.
If I’d ever move to Alaska, I’d pray for neighbors just like this family. Good people.

Good luck.
I second this…what a dream to have them as neighbors!!!
Seriously? Were you listening to anything they actually spoke? His kid just rolls around on the ground while eating from it, cause ya know, anything from nature is safe and good to eat, especially as a baby, huh? They said the grocery store is getting overwhelmed. BULLSHIT. There are two grocery stores in Homer. Save-U-More has products you had never thought you would see, and they have meat and stuff for the Russians. Its an incredible store.! There is no shortage of grocery's in Homer. Actually, the bars in Homer are fun as fuck. Kharacter's stays open till 5am. I've played many a concert in Homer.
You got to do you, you're life is yours. If you wanna do it, just do it.
You only live once and it’s a short experience at that. You are born alone and you will die alone. If you want something in life it needs to be done for and by yourself. You family will be there with you in the afterlife, and luckily I’m this modern day and age you can video call and fly in a metal tube at 500 mph so you aren’t ever truly alone or without family. Imagine our hunter gatherer ancestors who traveled the planet in foot and probably lost contact with friends and family never to see or hear them again.
Once again you've introduced us to some special people who are living life on their terms. I'm totally obsessed with all things Alaska so I'm thrilled you are taking us into it and showing us different aspects of that beautiful state. Thank you as always for the amazing work you do.

Must be nice to have the money to live the rich hippy lifestyle off grid and not be "part of the machine" like she said. She has the privilege to live off grid in a big house and travel to Turkey to get away from the cold. She looks the type that would be lecturing others about their privilege, while spending her privilege shamelessly.
They seem like cool people but regardless - this is absolutely just a video about some people vacationing in their cottage…
I would compare it to people claiming they live the “vanlife” when they bought a new Transit, spend $20K on a buildout and $10K on a solar panel/battery/inverter system. Yea, rough
life 😆
I was with them until I found out that they bail out and go to Turkey in the winter.
They're just summer people, dabbling in the Alaska experience. I've lived in Maine year round for 35 years, and we have real winter here. Not as intense as parts of Alaska, but plenty tough.
We call these people snowbirds. I have neighbors like them. San Francisco in the winter,
Maine in the summer. Nice enough people, but city folk at heart.
Until it drops to 20 below, and the wind howls, and the snow banks up against your
cabin, and the power (if you are on the grid) goes out for days, and the car won't start, you do not know what winter is like. Alaska in the winter can be considerably harder than that.
40 or 50 below outside Fairbanks, but plenty of people do it. These are bright, interesting, intelligent people, but they have no idea what they are in for, if they intend to live year round
in Alaska. It'll be an education.
Yeah they're impersonating Alaskans.
I live about 2 hours north of these people...some people call the summer only people snowbirds, most of us call them tourists, and let me tell you, alaskans dont like tourists. I live year round off grid here in a school bus.
Businesses shut down in winter and most people go to the lower 48 or Hawaii. It's part of the culture, kind of like how its part of the culture where you live to snot and whine about others' choices
You were with them until they found a reasonable way to manage winters? Is traveling for winter some sort of sin to you?
I as well have lived in Maine 40 years. When we lose power way more then a few days at a time longest was ice storm in 98. Little over a week.
It would be cool to see you come back in the winter and see how things are in contrast to the summer.
indeed- this is amazing- but the winter would be a nightmare
The family isn't there in winter
20+ years ago I was at a bar in New Orleans. Was sitting next to an Alaskan homesteader that worked on an oil rig for a scientific project. I asked him his biggest piece of advice: during winter to bring the toilet seat back inside after using it. 😅
As a suburban dweller, it's refreshing to see the wide open spaces. I hear it brings you peace to a level you can't understand unless you're doing it. Thanks to the family for sharing their life.

Ah, the modern-day, middle-class hippy; it’s all good until it gets really cold, then we piss off to Turkey! 😂
Exactly. When I learned that the whole video changed for me. Plus the whole...."those people aren't idiots" comment really turned me off. Dripping with condescension. Seems like they're larping honestly.
I love how clearly this couple is aware of the social engineering that is happening to the minds of many people now days.
Yep its wack. gotta think for urself in this shit show
As someone else best described what is going on on social media where people can’t express anything against clear wrongs like the grooming of children because of the “digital knife”that is constantly at their throats. Society is dumb and fucked and it will all implode at once. Best thing you can do is get away from it all.
Yeah and they finish each other's sentences. 😆
Yes, pure social engineering.
Oh yeah she is she subscribes to it totally fell in the trap,From the propaganda
I could not live like this, but I applaud people who can. There is always a trade off to live the way we want, but happiness is definitely a worthy cause.
I find it strange that you use this transplant living in a house that needs a lot of work and calling it a homestead. As someone who lives here, I would've found one of several thousand other people.
This video honestly comes off as appealing only to a non-Alaskan audience who has no idea about what an actual homestead looks like.
Your other videos of Alaskan life have been great. This one feels as if it has a certain agenda.
Nothing against Tony and his family. I'm happy that they were able to escape the East Coast rat race and enjoy the beauty and nature of this great state.

WHAT?!? They have never experienced an Alaskan winter. Psshhh....they ain't Alaskan.
It seems like all their knowledge of Alaska comes from rumors and stereotypes they heard online from Facebook "Karen's".
They ain't even here long enough during the year to get a PFD. 🤣
Look at their UA-cam page and it seems like they've hardly lived in Alaska at all. They were living down in Central America for a bit and are going to Turkey this winter. Nothing wrong with that and they seem like good people but this is more of a "vacation off the grid...ish" home.
@@JT-bc4ix Yeah I did check it out. They are basically just camping in Alaska for the summer. The guy seems very intelligent but i don't think they really know much about Alaska. Especially if they have only been to Homer. Ive been living in Alaska for over 5 years and I still feel like I'm some what of a newbie

Summer camp in Alaska. 99% of the challenge of living off the grid in Alaska starts late October and ends in May. These folks show up in late May and leave in October. That structure will never be winterized... be nice if you do a show on real off grid living in Alaska, year round, not just summer camp.

I can kinda relate to this. I live in sweden and the landscape looks pretty much the same with bears, wolfs, mooses etc. I don’t live in a hut though but in a real house but it’s way out there. I like the calm of the thick
coniferous forest. Btw he’s right, mosses do kill people and dogs by stomping them to death. It’s very uncommon but it happens, they are especially agressive if they have a calf near by. Oh and i’m a heavy metal guitarist myself. Rock on 🙂🤘
Next time you should visit some Homer off grid folks that live here year round. Funny hearing them talk about ' well i guess we could haul water'.. lol that's what many of us do during winter! Kinda weird seeing you interview some snow birds but I could tell you were a bit disappointed when you found out too. If you haven't lived a winter up here you don't know what Alaska is. I grimaced when she said she didn't like the cold. There is a native word for someone who hasn't spent a winter up here.. Cheechako.. but otherwise thank you for visiting. Come visit with my family in our yurt sometime!
Too many people invading that beautiful country. And the way that young guy handles that rifle...bending over and allowing the barrel to sweep across the people behind him....wow...EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and unnecessary.
We left the city and spent 12 years off-grid in the rainforest. This is all very familiar. Interesting neighbors (from scientists to tweakers), fresh food (our kids used to eat directly from our plants; not even picking with their hands), no decent grocery store for miles, free thinkers who can agree to disagree, thriftin' at the dump, weird crime (someone down the road from us had their HOUSE stolen); all of it. 😂
We're in a town now, for various reasons, but I definitely miss a lot about this way of life, and we still talk about eventually going back to off-grid living.
I was all in until they said they haven't done a winter and they travel in the winter to hotter countries...hmm
They don't live off grid, they vacation off grid. After they have lived year round for three years there , get back to me.
They're not actually living in the wild, just going on vacation. They leave to go to Turkey and Europe whenever they feel like.
I judged them more for the paper plates. Definitely leaving a footprint out there.

what she said about the community that used to be like, "Fck the system" is now the same community telling everyone to fall in line and do what they're told is so spot on. I still can't wrap my head around that. Very cool video, thank you for posting it. I love seeing Alaska. I imagine a lot of people like to imagine packing it all up and just getting away from all the cities and the craziness and that 'Us VS Them' attitude that's so disgusting and prevalent now.
Yep the F the man people have become the man
She's right...The same npc's are now taking covid orders from the Biden administration
The reason why those people that said fuck the system Anna telling people to fall in line because they are bought and paid by the system! that's why their corporate shells masquerading around as Punk artists they are just Lefty commies who whore themselves out for money and fame 💯
It’s not different then a parent telling their children do as your told which I’m sure they tell their kids to do things and if they don’t they get into trouble that’s kind of like a system it’s a parent system and if they tell you they don’t they might not be telling the truth

I love your channel, Pete. I have a real deep interest in the human story and what makes us tick, what separates us, what brings us together and mostly how people went from where they were to where they are. This video really hits on that last point and going from one extreme, Kensington to the complete other - off-grid, wilderness living in Alaska.
Keep up the good work, Pete!
Thanks HipKat! I feel the same as you here.
I wasn’t born in 1800’s, wouldn’t enjoy living without today’s technology
Really threw a spanner in the works here when they said they are leaving for Turkey, effectively a dictatorship, to chill out when the winter comes. Weird twist.
They don’t look like the type of people that would be living in Alaska. They are very city looking and acting but I guess they technically aren’t totally living in Alaska year round.
Watching from the UK and absolutely chuffed to bits to have discovered your channel Peter.

We are missing the sense of community; so many here just don’t care about anyone but themselves. This is what a lot of us crave……..for sure.
I moved here in 2008 the first time (from very close to Kensington, actually heh). I'm biased, but I highly recommend it.

The best part of this is seeing all of the family is there together. That is pure love & teamwork. The kids still have their close relatives. Imo that is super important.
But their mother does not have her family with her?
where do they get the money to go to turkey for an entire winter?
As others have commented, the whole video had a strange vibe unlike a lot of your others. No explanation of how they make ends meet, how they do the stuff they do, fuel the car and so on - and then they reveal that each winter they fly to Turkey at a minimum cost £1.5k per person to live where? I know you like to stay on friendly terms, but that seemed to undermine everything else that they said "living in touch with nature" and feral child etc away from the rat race.
I hope the middle finger emojis replies wasn't from you. I've wached all your videos with my wife and respected your approach even when we haven't always agreed because we know the nature of your business requires it.
She said they're blessed enough to leave durring the winter to warmer climate then laughs at "old tymers" who say ur screwed u won't make it I say bring it on....lady you just said we haven't actually been through a winter here, lmao cmon
Cheechako lol
These people should be back in the city
Man, I couldn’t agree more with this couple. I grew up in the punk/metal group. Literally 98% of my friends, ex-band mates are completely lost in everything they’ve been fed. These were some of the most interesting and intelligent people I knew. These days they seem so lost and incapable of independent thinking. Love these videos bud. I really appreciate them.
Sounds like you (and the peoople in this vid) chose the wrong friends. There is still so much good metal/punk out there. It's just harder to find and not mainstream. Give it long enough and the losers will leave, and the true metalheads will remain. Don't give up on the cause! \m/
This is pretty much the entire punk/goth/metal scene in Tampa. Everything Rebecca said from 25:50 onwards is 100% spot-on
@@horizonzeromom yeah same in Orlando
Omg, this man is a legend. Escaping a drug&crime filled city to go remote with his family and builiding a suistainable life for them. Much respect & blessings to Tony and his family!
That's the real American dream. There is still freedom to be found.
Well he escaped a drug and crime filled city to go to a drug and crime filled remote town 🙂 Trust me you don't worry about moose here, you worry about people.
Um does that man look drug free to you?
Just started watching your channel. Your stories are addictive, I just love the the human aspect. And the simple way you present it!👏. Of course I love the Canadian abandoned episodes, because I’m Canadian. But REALLY,.. all your content is great. You got yourself a new sub❤️. Keep up the good work!
Fire a gun into the sky???? That was one of the most irresponsible things I've ever heard. One of the biggest no no's with firearms is to fire off rounds into the air. A bullet that goes up will come down somewhere and could kill someone.
I was like "oh these people seem really cool they'll fit right in" but they don't even stay the winter?? Wimpy lower 48ers lmaooo
Peter you find very "interesting" people to interview. I love it keep going man.
Peter, spending a large chunk of my adult life in East New York, Brooklyn blocks from Pink Houses where you visited. Being first generation immigrant, been an activist and mentor for over a decade. I’ve seen and experienced many different types of people, enclaves, cultures, countries, religions, etc. and for some reason this Alaska series is in my top 3 places you’ve traveled. I’ve always been intrigued by Alaska and the people but the variation in the way of lifestyle in Alaska is such a dream of mine to experience. What brought everyone there, the communal feeling Alaska has that many other states lack is all so enjoyable to watch and hopefully 1 day I’ll get to experience.
I'm pretty sure that as a felon you can still take the Ferry, you just can't enter Canada at the ports. I've known a few folks that moved up that way after being turned away at the border on the road system.
@@justintempus7406 You can, I just looked into it! That’s awesome. Thank you, I was always under the assumption they still stopped at the border. But makes sense if they’re in open waters. Adding a cross country road trip including Alaska to the family bucket list for sure!
...idk if that guy really knows anything about construction, man
I love how the cat 🐈 is sitting at the table with them when they are eating dinner
They have to eat too
So people do eat with their animals on the table wow that’s so different
This was awesome. Thanks for sharing. I lived in Alaska in 1979/80. 2 summers, one winter.
So beautiful there. But the dark winter was not for me. Now I live in South Florida since 1980 and really love it.
Is south Florida low population density since it's so humid ? Wondering because I might move down there.
@@joshchurch785 I love it because it's tropical and I love gardening all year around 💚💚💚
@@joshchurch785 Florida has become super busy. Anywhere near the coast has a large population. The humidity didn’t really keep anyone from going there.
@Josh Church high density population in South Florida. Now , Alaska is low density if you don't mind the cold
I’d take the long winters and the hardened people over the people and mentality that is born out of southern Florida…. Good god those people are a mess of spirituality, personality, morals, intelligence…. No THANKS.
I'm from Delaware and used to take the train to Kensington when I was in my addiction. And he or anybody can't describe in words how insane it is up there. It's literally like a war zone and a third world country it's insane! I am so excited for you and your family that you got out of there and get to look at such beautiful scenery everyday and be with each other everyday that's a far life from Kensington life and so proud and happy for you and yours! Congratulations and I wish and pray for nothing but wonderful things for you all!!!!
The war zone is in your mind and the battle is for your soul
I'm glad you made it. This really shows that you can be from any family in the no matter how wonderful and fall into that.. his sister and cousin 🙏
I agree the war is in your mind. I battled mine over thirty years ago and drugs mean nothing to me anymore. Moving away is simply pulling a geographic. As they I moved but I brought the ass hole addict with me. It’s not the location it’s us. We need to make the change. I hope your doing well and you are taking good care of yourself. Drugs have destroyed many of my childhood lives and they passed way to young. Sometimes it makes me sad they could not find the “ street car called straight” it was not in their plans. Take care
why do you people say things like "when i was in my addiction?"
dude you were a drug addict by choice...addiction has nothing to do with it...why isnt EVERYONE addicted to drugs?
because they choose not to take them and if you claim its not a choice then explain HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO STOP TAKING THE DRUGS?
@@jadezee6316 it is really upsetting I think a lot of us feel this way like half and half half empathy and half this way at times
They leave during the winter and this is not off the grind. Could have picked a much better family for this. 4 year's? Common man. Do better.
I'm Anthony's first cousin, was visiting up there for a couple of weeks this October... it's absolutely beautiful ... + free fish , berries and moose burgers, I'm now thinking of moving there myself 😄👍
Make sure you have a means of income.
And are they living up there year round full time or just playing 'camping' for a few months ? Big difference.
@@GM-jv9jzdid you watch the whole video?
Unbiased, no politics, no agenda and neutral positive journalism 👏 👍 I love your outlook and your message Peter and I wish the rest of humanity had your message of 'uplift not destroy' and even if you highlight a issue, it's not the actual message but more like 'humanity I've showed you this, spread the news and I bring it you" rather than shove it down people's throats. I cannot wait to see where you go next (or in my case where you've been, got to catch up from beginning to end with you brother 🙏🏿)
Thanks Mohammad! That's what I always aim for so I'm glad it's coming through.
Well said. I feel the same as you Mohammad. Constant exposure to a divisive narrative is making people sick because it goes against the pure energy we were created with and that we all seek. The good news is everthing happens for a reason. To know joy we must know sorrow, light is only appreciated by having known darkness, etc.. to know what we want, we have to clearly know what we do not want. Contrast provides clarity. Much love and happiness
No politics?! Guys wife clearly mentioned Trump and how he’s not racist blah blah blah. If a person believes he’s not racist thats because that person my friend is an undercover racist. You can disagree with me but the videos of trumps shenanigans speak for themselves. I myself am not a fan of division, racism, hate, and other things but I also am not perfect, but that OK as all I want to fo is live MY life trying not to affect others in a negative way, and as we all know, that’s not easy.
You watched anything after the 24 minute mark? Unbiased, no politics lol...
This is an incredible channel. I watch / listen to a lot of youtube and have not come across anyone quite like you. You give people respect, learn from them, listen carefully, ask intelligently and inquisitively, and allow their experiences and knowledge speak and tell important stories. Really enjoying all of your videos - very well done and super important. Real life is happening before your eyes.
The first half of the video made moving to Alaska seem great, then the 2nd half was like “Lot of drug use, depression, serial killers, bears, dangerous moose, you have to leave during the winter because its so cold, you poop in a bucket………..but, free berries!”
Apparently, there is a serial killer bear on drugs with depression roaming around in that area.
Being 25 mins from Kensington this hits. We moved just *barely* outside of Philly to get away from the bulk of it. Still not far enough. There are zombies at every Philly intersection. At the on/off ramps to the bridges. It's like driving through a set on the Walking Dead. Happy for these guys. Always wanted to do something like this
Wow!!
My family lives out in bucks county and it’s creeping out there
What a fantastic video with wonderful people. Agreed so much with what the woman was saying, very thought provoking chat. I’m from New Zealand but have travelled to Alaska and loved it. Such a fascinating lifestyle.

After spending many years in Alaska I will say that most of these newbies don't last more than one winter. Talk to them in late February or March and see how they are doing.
