9 Weird Dog Behaviors Explained

  • In this video, we will talk about 9 strange things dogs do and explain the meaning behind them.
Why dogs sniff before they poop
For dogs, pooping and peeing are effective methods of communication. Dogs mark their territory by eliminating waste and your dog’s chosen potty spot sends other dogs a message about where they’ve been and what they’ve been doing. It can also inform other dogs if there is an incoming threat.
Why dogs dig their bed or floor
A dog’s wild ancestors scratched at piles of leaves, dirt and pine needles to create a comfortable mound of bedding to rest. Many domesticated dogs still retain this behavior; By scratching or digging the floor or their bed, your pup may actually be trying to create a snug nest to sleep.
Bed-scratching is also a territorial behavior. Dogs have glands in their paws that leave a distinctive scent on bedding or other objects they scratch.
bed-scratching is also part of canine maternal instinct. If your female dog is getting ready to have her puppies, her bed-scratching behavior will suddenly increase. She’s making a nest for the arrival of her new pups to keep them warm and safe.
Why dogs carry stick on walks
Dogs like to carry sticks on walks and back home due to their instinctual desire to retrieve things.
As hunting animals, dogs were traditionally bred to ‘retrieve’ their catch and deliver them to their owner.
Dogs also like sticks because sticks feel like bones to a dog, and chewing them is satisfying.
Why dogs pee when excited or submissive
Many dog owners mistake submissive and excitement urination as a house-training problem when they are actually involuntary behavioral issues.
During times of high excitement, your puppy may dribble or squirt small amounts of urine.
Dogs also urinate in an attempt to communicate a submissive status to a person or animal.
Likewise, if your dog is scared, shocked, suspicious, or anxious about their surroundings or the individuals around, they may urinate in response to convey that they are not a threat
    Why dogs lick paws
Dogs typically lick their paws as a part of self-grooming.
But if your dog licks their paws too much, or begins licking suddenly and only on one paw, inspect the tops and bottoms of the feet, the nail beds and toenails. Look for foreign objects, bruises, cuts, swelling, bleeding, redness, crusting, scabs, broken nails. Your dog may have irritated their paw by stepping on something sharp, walking on a hot sidewalk.
Excessive paw-licking could also due to food allergies or parasite infections.
    Why dogs sigh
Dogs may sigh to signal contentment after a rewarding action. Like when they have had their playtime, or when they’ve eaten their favorite meal.
Dogs also sigh to signal the exhaustion of their efforts when they are disappointed. Like when they’ve begged for food throughout dinnertime without a payoff.
    Why dogs eat poop
When a mother gives birth to her puppies, a mother will eat the puppy’s feces to keep their new home clean.
Eating fecal droppings is also a way of obtaining key nutrients.
While we may view poop as dangerous, it’s not as scary as we think. Healthy poop often contains harmless bacteria, water, and some undigested food. Some dogs find horse manure and goose droppings particularly appealing. This is because the manure of herbivores is full of enzymes and partially digested protein, which can be beneficial for a dog’s digestive system.
If your dog is eating poop, there might be some nutrients missing from their diet. Sometimes switching to a healthier dog food diet is the best way to fix a stool eating problem.
Some dogs may also start to eat their own poop because of environmental stress or anxiety.
    Why dogs run away
Dogs may run away because they love nothing more than being active, sniffing around and exploring.
Dogs also run in an attempt to answer nature’s call, like searching for a mate or chase a prey.
Of course, many dogs are spooked by sudden loud noises like fireworks, thunderstorms and they run away to get away to protect themselves.
    Why dogs throw up
A dog may throw up simply because he’s eaten something disagreeable or gobbled down too much food, too fast. Dogs may also throw up because of food allergies, a sudden change in their diet, ingestion of too much fatty or buttery food, or even motion sickness due to riding in a car.
But vomiting can also indicate something far more serious. Your dog may have swallowed a toxic substance, or may be suffering from a condition that requires immediate medical attention.
Frequent or chronic vomiting can be a sign of a more serious condition. If your dog’s vomiting is not an isolated incident, a vet visit is necessary.
    Why dogs shake their toys
Dogs’ wild ancestors, wolves, would grab a prey in their mouth and shake aggressively from side-to-side until it was dead.
When your dog shakes their toy, they mimic the action wolves use to kill small prey. But make no mistake! This doesn’t mean your pup is aggressive!

The failure to make the poop facts #2 was a tragic oversight. Also, dogs tend to look at their owners when they're pooping to communicate that they want you to look out for them while they're most vulnerable. That's also why dogs often stand watch by the bathroom while their owners are preoccupied

Actually, during a training exercise in Germany, I had my back against a tree, dropping a bomb when the opposing force attacked. While holding the position I was unable to change, I picked up my rifle, fired blanks and using MILES gear scored a hit. Most of all, the linear assault parted ways to my flanks like I was Moses parting the red sea and a couple of them starting laughing so hard they were combat ineffective. Just goes to show how a single motivated soldier and help break up a company sized assault. I should have gotten some time of award.

One thing that I'd love to see covered (If it hasn't already been in another video) is why dogs LOVE to
    case and be chased.
Our lil guy just loves this and it's a daily routine.
When he goes outside into our back yard to do his business or just to do the mandatory squirrel security check, if I go out with him, then it's GAME ON! When he's finished with his original purpose, he'll stop, look up at me, then pounce down (front end down, rear end up) tail wagging fast, indicated it's chase time.
First, he wants me to chase him as I do, he does the quick 180 degree turn and zooms right past or through me. LOL
Then I run away and he chases me, barking wildly (in a playful way).
Then, I'll say to him, "I'm gonna get you! I'M GONNA GET YOU" and this is where the fun starts.
He'll zoom back and forth, then come up to me, get up on his hind legs and start boxing me.
Of course, I box back, but he always wins. LOL
When he's done with all this, he'll zoom back to the house with me chasing behind him.
He keeps looking back to assure I'm chasing and then runs into his little door.
When inside the house, he'll look through the glass door and as I come to the door, he zooms off again, into the livingroom, where, it is customary that he gets treats and hugs. LOL
This lil guy is the cutest, most amazing doggie that we have ever had. He's not really a dog, actually.
He's a tiny, short person with a fur coat. I dare anyone to tell him differently. 👍👍😅😂🤣👍👍

Our late dog never roamed far from home - but if we walked without a leash and got separated she'd just go home (Giving me a heart attack in the process). Sure she may have visited a neighbor on occasion or paid a visit to the small herd of cows on the field behind my parents house when she was outside in the yard alone.
No they are not my parents' cows, they belong to a family living a couple houses down the street. But the dog just loved sniffing around looking for mice, cats, birds etc. on the field. It was far more enticing to her than roaming the neighborhood.

I wish you covered yawning. Other than when a dog is very tired, they yawn because they are stressed. Usually they are communicating that they are displeased with something, like not getting what they want or being told to do or not do something. It is probably the most important behaviour to observe as communication. Also some dogs mark territory with poop with the instinct to do so like urinating. On walks, my beagle Jasper always backs up against a tree, poll, or bush. He tries to go 8 to over 20 times in a 40 min walk. 3 on while traveling away from home, and the rest are the last 3rd of the way home. After 3 poops there is nothing left, but sometimes he eventually he forces diarrhea. It is an instinct that I am unable to rain out of him. FYI you can easily train a dog to close the door when they come in. My channel has a video of both my previous beagle and current, opening the partially closed door to come in and then closing it. Even when I am upstairs, I do not need to let Jasper in nor do I have to go close the door.

I think it's important to add that while dogs may love to chew sticks it can be very dangerous. The sticks could splinter in their mouth and cause harm, so you're better off bringing a toy that they can bite down on or chew safely. It means they are getting allergies and dry skin from their garbage kibble diet. A raw diet and regular coat maintenance will clear all those owner negligence problems right up.

My dog has a mild case of arthritis in her back due to age but she licks her paws because of allergies (rarely now since she's being medicated). But I think licking can be when they're uncomfortable - be it pain, allergies, anxiety, agitation, etc.

@@itazuranakisu i think so, my baby only started at her paws when she developed her heart disease, its definitely a sign somethings wrong. Unfortunately for me, she was such a strong girl, by the time I figured it out it was to late. So please if ur dogs are doing that and you very sure they not bored or under exercised just get it checked out.

My small dog shakes his toys definitely like he is killing it.. when he poops while looking at me 😂 he bends in a funny position! Mine sighs out of boredom though coz he only does that when he hasn’t been out! Repeatedly!

My jack Russell shakes vermin when she catches it! I think that’s the real reason why dogs shake there toys

My puggle does all of these things he stares at me when he is pooping so I pretend to look around to let him know I'm watching out for him he comes in bathroom everytime I poop and watches out for me in return alot of things he does are of natural instinct fluffing of bed shaking toys etc.

My dog Dom used to carry home sticks 3 times his size. It was comical especially when he tried to go up the ramp and could not figure out how to drag it up the ramp with him. He would run up the ramp to break the stick into smaller pieces and then carry those up the ramp together behind him. He would then abandon them at the door...
Swear he was doing it to create a barricade to protect the home from strangers.

I just had a new thought that back when man needed to make fires for warmth.they probably trained their dog to help them bring sticks back to them for that. Then years of that behavior became instinctive.

My Brandon,( I saved from a kill shelter) so that first 4years, are a mistery to us. Ok, back to my point. Brandon would only take a crap either in a ditch or squeeze into bushes for a comfy dump. I'm not sure if he was a shy pooper,or he knows how much picking up dog coils wasn't at the top of my bucket list.
