I use a diffuser for essentialmoils. Sweet orange oil is one I like and when I kept it on at night that’s when they avoided my house. I also blocked all the little holes I could find in the wooden floor, and sprinkled those areas with essential oil from mentha peperita. I had professionals over, that was very effective but on the long run the little creatures found ways to make new holes in the wooden floor. Even in houses with concrete flooring you have to block every tiny hole. Except mice can’t make new holes in concrete. They can in old houses. So it really is effective to use smells they don’t like. I cleaned the spots where I had found droppings with essential oil too. No more mice this winter.
My toy Australian Shepherd is a very enthusiastic mouse hunter but I have only ever seen him catch 1 mouse and it was a small one. All I have to do is say there goes a mouse and he's off and chasing. Sometimes he even goes in the right direction. I think it's become more of a game for him.
one thing that seems to work (no, not peppermint) is chili powder. They get it on their feet and if I scatter it in their favorite drawers, they only walk through it once and don't come back. I would imagine it tastes as bad as it smells...
So I've seen in the comments, almost all smells have been ineffective, but no one has commented on Lavender. Does that mean it actually works?? Has anyone had luck(or no) with it?? We were about to buy a bunch of plants to surround the house with, would love to know if it's a waste of time. Thanks!
Hi there not sure about lavender but they hate rosemary plant/herb They would look lovely planted around your home and you can use it for cooking win win 🙂
Rats around here, southern California, love oranges. They eat them right off the tree or fallen fruit. They typically hollow them out. Using orange oil around here will attract them.

Okay. Cinnamon and Chili powder? NOPE! I tried those two, spreading them along the baseboards. Then turned the light soff, and just waited. Sure enough, out came the mouse, AND SHE SAT RIGHT IN THE POWDER OF EACH. Yes, sat right in the stuff. Washed her face with her front paws, which had obviously been right in the powder because her footprints were in the chili and later the cinnamon powder. So, surprise surprise, some mice seem to just love chili powder and cinnamon.
Mouse said, "hmm theres some damn fine snacks around her somewhere by the looks of what they spilled...I just have to explore everything until I find them"
I can vouch for the peppermint oil. But some on a paper towel or cotton ball. Also works for squirrels. One morning I looked out the window and saw a squirrel jump into my wheel well on my car. Then I realized, it looked it knew exactly where it was going, and never exited. I ran out there, popped the hood, and it looked at me like wth?? and took off the way it came. No nuts or damage, so must've caught it in time thankfully. I made a strong alcohol, water, peppermint solution up and sprayed my tires, wheel well, around the hood, engine kept a cotton ball soaked with it in the hood and tried to remember to remove it when I drove. Later that day, went to start up my mower, and there was a mouse nest in the intake.....and in my shed. So sprayed around those and all over my mower as well. No mice since I've been doing that. I may try the cinnamon sticks with few drops of peppermint oil on it. The cotton balls need to be refreshed every few days, maybe that'll last longer.
I realize that's easier to use...but try to stick to natural methods...so many folks don't know just how many toxic products we use in our everyday lives
My barn mice could care less about the peppermint I put all over the barn. I used very strong so on 4x4 gauze pads. I found they were walking all over the pads!!
The citrus does not work. My child left a half of fresh lemon on counter one night and a mouse chewed the lemon leaving a pile of lemon bits all around it. That’s how I discovered I had some mice
I have been studying pest control for mice for 12 years, This is very accurate just so you know people EXCEPT FOR #1 DO NOT BUY ULTRASONIC SOUND DEVICES OR VIDEOS
@d.e.b.b5788 It's worked for me. Effectiveness depends a lot on placement.of the device and it can't be blocked. The devices also keep away insect too. If you have rodents, it takes several days for them to leave and have a way for them to leave easily, too. I had mice in my garage and installed two devices including one on the ceiling where I have an electrical outlet for the garage door opener, and the other on a wall outlet. I also have them throughout my house as a deterrent. I don't even notice them now.
I emailed Crutchfield about some speakers to see if they could do ultrasonic. they wrote back so you want hi-fidelity. I wrote back, No, I want to blare dog whistles if the cop has a k9. Cranked it up higher, dog went nuts again. Then car turned left at light and it was cop car. 😇
I can’t use the sound devices, I have very sensitive hearing, so if I’m within 20 feet of them it hurts my ears. Even the sound played at the end of this video hurts.

Cloves seem to work. I am in a 1900s cabin in the mountains and it seems to work. I also sprinkle it on the inside and a day later on the outside of the cabin. Only caught 3 mice in 17th years in a humane mouse trap.
My shed was infested with mice and traps can only catch a few, so I sealed the shed up and put my generator in the shed and left it running until it ran out of fuel , I don’t think they like carbon monoxide and they all disappeared ,,,,,
I’m guessing mice are more susceptible to some of these than rats - such as vinegar and cinnamon. I say this because I clean and deodorize their cage with white vinegar, they eat cinnamon, and will eat some citrus fruits (sparingly). They’ve never reacted in a negative way to any of these. Oh and it’s not peppermint, but rats LOVE eating and rolling around in fresh mint leaves.
Better store food in containers. Wash hands after handling food is why mice, rats chew anything hands been by humans. Seal entry hole round home with steel wool. Never have an open compost but closed.
false on peppermint, vinegar, cinnamon or clove, mothballs, citrus, chili powder, predator scent (cats), onions, and certain sounds...all the others i haven't tried yet LOL
Well, there😁😉 is also the element of cleaning up and eliminating attractions of any food source. Unless you live in an area where radioactive rats live. In that case, sorry about your luck.
Mine bring me some, and get an extra reward for the gift. Did have a rat in a fish tank once. Came home from work, and the rat was in one corner, and the cat in the other. Guess they were waiting on the bell to ring, and I spoiled the match up. I never did find out how a bat got in the house, but that was a b*tch to catch. Took me 3 hours.
As a person that has cats in a neighborhood full of mice and rats (a whole lot of rats) I can say you won't have rodents if you have cats. But if you have dogs, and feed them outside, you definitely will have rats. So many times I have seen rats eating out of the dog's bowls while the dogs either watched or ignored them. They didn't even try to chase them off. One day I saw a huge rat and a bunch of smaller ones on my neighbor's porch going into the dogfood bag and taking food back to the nest they had under the porch. I have only seen one mouse on my property and it appeared when my husband brought home a rolled up carpet he found. As soon as he unrolled it out on the lawn a mouse ran out and in less than a second my cat caught it. Cats work.
We are not tryna pay for vet insurance, cat trees, cat litter, cat harnesses, cat food, catnip, cat whatever???? Just to get rid of mice. I will get a cat because I love the companionship of a cat and not because I want to rid my place of mice.
Haha. Some of this may be true but just advising we manufacture a very potent rodenticide which is cinnamon flavoured. It is one of the most palatable rodenticides in the New Zealand market. I suggest it may be concentration related as to whether it is an attractant or repellent
Small animal cruelty towards rats, mice, and other small rodents, is not acceptable at all. Rat animals are all mammals, and they must be respected for who they are, because they are living individuals, and spiritual beings, and they have the right to be here and exist in the same way that we have. Instead, be kind to the rat animals, and do not harm them in any way, whether directly or indirectly. You must learn to live with the rat animals, in the same way that we do with all other animals. The planet we live on belongs to all of us, and it also belongs to the rat animals!
We had a citrus tree with oranges, lemons and grapefruit. Rats would eat the oranges and grapefruits, so I don't believe citrus scent will repel rats in fact it might attract them. I was advised to leave bars of Irish Spring deodorant soap around to repel mice.

Gospel music works to make them quiet. I noticed when I play certain music the rats quiet down. It's a horrible feeling to have to deal with this. Landlord won't even send pest control 😢

*Call the health dept.* They’ll make sure your landlord complies with his obligation to keep his home rodent free. You may want to suggest to him first, you are being forced to do so, b/c of his lack of taking care of this health issue, he is forcing you to live with. To give him one last chance to do what the law says he’s to do. Look on line to see your tenant rights in your state. They vary, but in most states, tenants rule. Which is why it can be brutal to find a place, landlords charge up the rear. They’ve had a lot of tenant issues & that will reflect toward future tenants, to try to assure a smoother experience. I have a radio playing on a Christian channel 24/7 for a couple yrs now, in my basement. At first it seemed to work. Now, I think they’re praising the Lord for the food, shelter & warmer conditions out of the cold.😂 They raided my bird food & stash I had there a couple weeks back. Left a real mess! Going to have to poison them. Too many of these home made remedies don’t work. Headed to the hardware store tomorrow for some. Even the new D-con removed the main ingredient that was so lethal to them. Now, it’s a kinder, milder way. I love all animals, just not the ones that should be outside, invading my basement inside. I even had weasels a couple yrs back!!! Never in my life did I ever hear of that! BUT...had no mice issues. ;) Wasn’t worth the trade off. I wound up pouring bleach down the holes they tunneled through via the outside shower & in the opposite driveway at the chimney. That seemed to take care of them. No prob since. But the mice are back.... :( I would have left the weasels, but once I realized they multiply like rabbits & can be a real hazard in homes, I had no choice but to get rid of them. I also had a small, older dog that I read they could attack, if they felt threatened by it. The way out to the yard directly, is through the bsmt here. And I would hear them scurrying, when we would head down, sometimes. I even caught one peaking out at me once.😂Very cute, but....no thanks. I felt horrible about the bleaching, but it definitely took care of them. Dumped a big container down each hole. Left several minutes between, so if any were in there, they could run out the other hole. Found out my covered wood pile & bunny population were big draws for them. They obviously decided to move into more accommodating conditions. It explained the dead/gutted buns, incl babies, I was finding in my yard & outside shower.😭 Horrible sight! Looked like a ritual took place on them! No more now. Bunnies are back & happy here again. Wood pile reduced & moved to plastic bins, too. So, I highly recommend straight bleach if anyone has a weasel issue. They can contort themselves to fit in an opening the size of a quarter, so don’t ever think you’re immune! And their _razor sharpe_ teeth can easily cut through wood, if needed. The things you learn when you have to. ;)
Mom put cotton balls with peppermint extract on them at the eaves of the attic, because it sounded like squirrels were going into the attic. Well, within a couple of days, they could be heard again. Mom saw why, whenever she went out to check the mail! They had taken all of the cotton balls out of the attic, and took them to the neighbors, and had them stacked up in front of their mailbox!! 😳🤣🤣 They wanted them far away!!! 😁🤣

I have put mouse traps, those baking soda with dry mashed potatoes and corn meal and mixed in those pallets that are supposed to kill them. But I still see their dropping.
I'm going to try some old perfume that I'll never use in my shed! Nothing else has worked! I have a trail camera on in there and they just walk over peppermint soaked rags and could care less about ammonia and vinegar
I am currently adding ground cloves to my scent traps, which include many of the things you mentioned. The link to the sound barrier does not work any longer. Perhaps you should find a new one.
I had a field rat come into to kitchen looking for the Paprika powder! I first noticed the gnawed jar on the side shelf so I set a trap with Paprika inside! I got it!

When I've found traps no longer effective (some appear to "smarten up" and won't go near the trap), I've found that Peppermint oil has worked well to drive off the smartened up last one. I too was amazed that anyone would put ammonia and bleach together in the same sentence. If mixed together the fumes are DEADLY (and not JUST to rodents)! NEVER mix those two ingredients together.
Chlorine gas is released, deadly.
Those glue traps they avoid as well after a while!

They could come fro,m wooden floor???
Yes of course they can. They have sharp teeth. A small hole is easily widened. They need very little space. When a pen can get through sp can mice.
My cat works the best.
Had mice in and out around the house. Got a kitty and mice are gone. Haven't seen one in 2 years. Thank you Charles! 😅

Chili powder or cayenne pepper?
Peppermint works at my house. Also Bay leaves. I mix them both, crush them and sprinkle all thru my home and basement. Chile powder in my doorways too
So I've seen in the comments, almost all smells have been ineffective, but no one has commented on Lavender. Does that mean it actually works?? Has anyone had luck(or no) with it?? We were about to buy a bunch of plants to surround the house with, would love to know if it's a waste of time. Thanks!

I found rodents ate up the chillies I left out , hoping to deter them..👎🤦♀️

Does the peppermint oil truly work on mice ?

I have been studying pest control for mice for 12 years, This is very accurate just so you know people EXCEPT FOR #1 DO NOT BUY ULTRASONIC SOUND DEVICES OR VIDEOS
Why??
@@janiesmith987 Because they don't work. Mice just sit there as if it's music for them.

I can’t use the sound devices, I have very sensitive hearing, so if I’m within 20 feet of them it hurts my ears. Even the sound played at the end of this video hurts.
Peppermint essential oil is so expensive! Even in 16 oz qty! I use it w vinegar and alcohol to keep away the pantry moths, didn’t know also repels mice, have not had rodent problem
Also use cedar and eucalyptus oils cuz less $$$

I’m guessing mice are more susceptible to some of these than rats - such as vinegar and cinnamon. I say this because I clean and deodorize their cage with white vinegar, they eat cinnamon, and will eat some citrus fruits (sparingly). They’ve never reacted in a negative way to any of these. Oh and it’s not peppermint, but rats LOVE eating and rolling around in fresh mint leaves.
If mothballs can do that to a mouse, it can do that to a human too.
Or worse.

I never did find out how a bat got in the house, but that was a b*tch to catch. Took me 3 hours.
My elitist cat wont touch rat....
Cats work.

Thanks for sharing team 😊
We had a citrus tree with oranges, lemons and grapefruit. Rats would eat the oranges and grapefruits, so I don't believe citrus scent will repel rats in fact it might attract them. I was advised to leave bars of Irish Spring deodorant soap around to repel mice.

Now, I think they’re praising the Lord for the food, shelter & warmer conditions out of the cold.😂
They raided my bird food & stash I had there a couple weeks back.
BUT...had no mice issues. ;)
Wasn’t worth the trade off. I wound up pouring bleach down the holes they tunneled through via the outside shower & in the opposite driveway at the chimney.
That seemed to take care of them. No prob since. But the mice are back.... :(
I would have left the weasels, but once I realized they multiply like rabbits & can be a real hazard in homes, I had no choice but to get rid of them.
The things you learn when you have to. ;)
