I'd argue that the reason why Hopkins is hated as much as he is because he's portrayed as someone who's supposed to be a support to the team, but does nothing but berate not only the sinners but his own office members.
Effie and Saude are liked because even though they chat shit they still try to make to work with the sinners and the shit they chat is much more obviously deserved than with Hopkins. When LCCB Insults LCB it's because they don't have their shit together, when Hopkins does it it's because he's an insecure opportunist. When he speaks its more telling of himself than it is LCB, when LCCB spoke it was more telling of LCB than it was Effie or Saude.
Also for literal antagonist like Kromer or Dongrang, they're hated but not as much as it's harder to hate an Antagonist than it is a supporting cast character even if they do the same thing verbatim (like how Dongrang betrays LCB at the end of Canto 4)
Also people need to stop comparing Hopkins to Philip smh, the only thing they have in common is the fact they're insecure fixers with glasses, but they're very different from eachother
Imagine PM brings back Hopkins later in the story, but he's just a shell of a man from of having a soulless office job after his move to a nest. Now that would be a PEAK will of the city moment

That leads to speculation: Suppliyng Yuri with mask was on Hopkins, Yuri was brought without office knowing it or they decided that she should already have one of her own/expect the toxin grenade to have gone off, despite masks being expensive/ grenades being the only known temporary toxin source
Either way, not sharing critical for survival information, was realy stupid for Aya, and a realy dick move from Hopkins (becouse he is not stupid) and her employer.

No, Hopkins did one stupid thing.
He learned that he was traveling with 12 immortals, each being stronger than him, saw them being brought to life and was like: "I want to antagonize them, it's not like they are coming back".
The only saving grace for such thing is at the time no one knew that Dante doesn't breath.

Moreover, it is a pity for Philip also because the dialogues after the death of his comrades are a hope that Philip will live, not die with them. I mean, when your old veteran mentor and the girl who rejected your love confession still wish that you would live, even if they die...and then there is a clown who makes you feel guilty for their deaths...well, I really feel sorry for him.

Could you blame it on the group being stupid and not preparing? I mean sure, but this was their first mission, Vergilius made it his mission to be as unhelpful as possible, and also the Office Fixers were the ones who were assigned to handle any complications. One could assume 'Poison Gas' was involved in one of those bullet points.
In other words it's definitely less the group's fault and more Hopkins/Aya. I mean sure, Faust and Yi Sang are smart, but this is their first foray into a Lobotomy Corporation proper. Being smart is one thing, being omniscient and knowing all potential threats before you even begin is another.

@@hugswanted7954 That's just Faust being prideful. Besides, even if it was accurate, 'All outcomes' means that there needs to be prerequisite information for her to determine outcomes off of. Since there was no sign anywhere that there'd be a gas leak, it's not hard to make the connection that she wouldn't know anything could happen.

The biggest thing “wrong” with Hopkins was that he acted like a huge asshole and completely got away with it. People feeling he wasn’t properly ‘punished’ drastically adds fuel to the fire of hatred towards him. If he had just gotten offed by some anomaly, people would likely not give him much thought, but him being one of few characters in the series to completely get away with doing a heinous thing makes him a standout bastard.

the limbus crew could NOT be blamed by being unprepared by the gas, they literally didn't know where they were going before being unceremoniously thrown into the basement. It's like being dragged into a swimming pool and then being blamed for not bringing baseball equipment, how were you supposed to know to get that beforehand? And just because someone has something in his pocket there is zero reason for anyone to bring it up, or will you tell me there is someone out there that forces randoms to empty their pockets when someone checks if they still have their phone on them with a quick pat to their sides?
It's because the dialogue states that Dante was suspicious oh his visibly stuffed pockets. And if it was a one off that would be fair, but the fact he mentions it TWICE and them brushes off Rodya about it, it's a little silly

PMUA was fan made association but exposed to been funded by political figure behind GYU who both do alot of bad things
GYU sharing misinformation such as firing of vellmori by call at 11 PM then accusing PM to be funded by blood money then trying to say they have contact with vellmori yet none to be proven then pulled themselves out after PM showing evidence that there no illegal firing yet still trying to get project moon into ideology investigation
PMUA shared confidential documents of vellmori which should been kept private throwing her to the public and then even after the evidence of project moon shown and voice recording they still was posting about trying to get PM into apologizing to feminist movement and so on then now started calling themselves Korea Gaming (Thought Police) (i added that part) and trying to cancel Guardian tales next
If anything, Vergil is unnecessarily being antagonistic to Dante in a lot of cases. He later snubs Dante for his own sloppy preparation, if you can call that preparation, and leaves the blame for all of his own mistakes to Dante, in spite of knowing Dante would be incapable of the task due to memory loss. Meanwhile, he's the strongest out of all of them, but sends Dante down into L-corp facilities with a ragtag group that's as likely to bash each others' heads in as protecting Dante and a few mostly clueless fixers while he chills in the bus, but he somehow expects Dante to do it all and deliver results? That seems incredibly stupid on his part.
If Vergil and Dante's names are a reference to the divine comedy (written by Dante around the 1300's), then eventually Dante and the sinner gang are going to go somewhere where Vergil can't follow them. Maybe he's throwing them into the deep end to accelerate their personal growth?

Effie and Saude are liked because yes they cririsized the sinners and poked at them but, the sinners actually deserved it cause they were actively making things harder than they needed to be but even then they still tried to have faith in the sinners and went along with their insanity despite the sinnrs ruining all of their hard work esdentially. Hopkins meanwhile puts down everyone, while not being that much better himself, betrays the team, even though he was also paid to help the team and that is oneof the biggest difference Effie and Saude do their bloody job while being reliable, Hopkins was unreliable only being reliable for himself and was actively preparing to abandon the group. One group is reliable and realisitic in how they treat the sinners the other one is unreliable and overly an asshole for no good reason. Now this isnt to say hopkins is a bad character yea he is a good character but he is nothing like effie and saude so it makes no sense bringing them up. Hopkins is realisitic for the city, caring about himself and worrying only for his life and that makes him a good character not a liked character which is why he gets all the hate he deserves cause as this entire story has been about the city is ass and living by its rules is ass, which what makes effie and saude good, they critisize but they do their job, grow to like the sinners, help the sinners, die for the sinners while still playfully teasing them. So that is why hopkins is hated, cause he is a good character yes so as a good character he gets the hate that a good hatred fueling character should get meanwhile effie and saide are loved cause they actually do their job and actually criticize the sinners when warranted as dante said "Effie and Saude, we didnt deserve you." Cause they definitely didnt XD but that is just my opinion. I also wish for the day that hopkins shows up again so we can beat his ass like the great character he is deserves. I can also talk about Dongrang and Dongbaek for why people love them as well but still hate Hopkins but I typed a lot already.
And in the end, both effie and saude were amazed by the sinners at the elevator talk. Even at their pure perfect plan goes to waste, giving migraine and intense blood rush, they still have respect for the sinners. And in the next canto, they were in a better terms now

hopkins knew dante could revive the sinners and he still ran off. hopkins had a job to do and he still ran off. The fact that you are applauding an asshole for sinking to the lowest common denominator, in a series all about characters trying to break free of the dogmatic norm, is insane.
There have to be characters like hopkins though if we are to believe that this type of behavior is common place in the City though, and in that he does his job well

@@desadograisedrobot515 Vergilius hired Aya, Hopkins and Yuri, as in, paid money for their services. They weren't even supposed to do any of the fighting, just make the expedition into a hellhole filled with sleep paralysis demons easier for the employees whose job was to actually fight the abnormalities.
Instead, it turns out that out of the three fixers he hired, two died and one did absolutely nothing useful and let the entire party perish (If Aya survived, Yuri and the Sinners would have suffocated and Hopkins would have ran away with Enkephalin anyway).
Hopkins quite literally scammed Limbus Company, AFTER discovering that they have a Color Fixer working with them and a Singularity-level tech.

(The LCCB team might have even ran into the gas but for some reason it wasn’t mentioned in the report, and if it was then Faust was probably the only one who read it and kept it to herself because ‘Faust knows what Faust knows’ or whatever lol)
Edit: Yes, I know the LCCB comes to work with LCB directly but that was an extremely circumstantial thing as the reason they did show up was because they failed to get the last Golden Bough

The only reason I don't like Hopkins is that because of the gas attack he indirectly slowed the group down and because of that we get the bough yoinked from us, then we get chewed out by Verg for it.
I mean we all know someone who is a jerk so Hopkins is relatable in a negative way, characters like Kromer on the other hand are so extremely evil that there's no way anyone could find her atrocities "hitting too close to home" so to speak, the "magnificent bastard" effect if you will
I personally don’t blame Hopkins for anything, I just don’t like him because he’s rude and only self-interested. Surprising few people in Project Moon are solely self-interested and act without any regard for others, but Hopkins seems to be one of those people, which is surprisingly abhorrent considering half of Limbus Company are straight up psychopaths

I respect the hustle, but he most definitely worthy of hatred, and the man actively prevented himself from actually getting a substantial haul of Enkephalin, AND (from his offices perspective) got two of their fixers killed, AND the twelve agents who came to help.,. All for what? Less than a PE box? Man isn’t getting anything more then a couple lighters worth Enkephalin with only his pockets, and is now having to run solo as a low ranking fixer in the city while diving into L corp buildings home to some of the most dangerous monsters in the city…
I cannot express how horrible of a tactical and logical decision this is, nor can I express how horribly definitively dead this man is just in general. AT BEST, this man is never going to move up in his group as he has (provided he convinces everyone it was totally not his fault in any way) shown a staggering and completely incompetence on a pretty important job. In a place as cut throat as the city why would ANYONE keep him on board after that? Literal rats would be more valuable atleast you barely would have to pay them.
I’d like to add onto 9:57 by mentioning that Heathcliff, Rodya, and Ryoshu who, in my opinion, are the most street-smart of the sinners and that makes that whole situation even better/worse, overall more humiliating. Pretty good video nonetheless.
Because we didn’t get a cool boss fight where we explore his past like Kromer, Dongrang and Dongbaek. Would’ve been neat if he helps us all the way until the end where he reveals “fuck you all, why should I waste my life working my ass for some higher ups who sit on their chairs all day for some vague objective I have no clue of.” and sabotages the mission to take the bough at the last moment to rise up. He kills Yuri but accidentally comes into contact with the apple. Due to his dark desire and determination, the apple doesn’t kill him but morphs him and he uses this newfound strength to murder us and run off with the prize. He fails, we kill him and then the rest goes as normal
But in the cost of removing the Heart aching part of Gregor's yell at yuri.

In fact, when it comes to this topic, I am sometimes sorry to see negative words towards Ayin, because even on one of the screenshots he was labeled as 5th for hate. And of course he is not the brightest person, but...at such moments I remember how people love Roland and everyone feels sorry for him, for his life and drama, and I also love Roland, I feel sorry for him, but damn.
I mean, if you compare them, they're a lot alike.
They both lost the ones they loved. Roland lost Angelica, his wife, one of the few people to whom he showed his face and opened up, learning from his hard life before. For Ayin, it is Carmen, his friend, his mentor, a dear person, and this teaches the equally hidden side of Ayin himself, as it does for Roland. Moreover, both essentially blame themselves for their deaths. Roland blames himself for not being there, and Ayin blames himself for seeing Carmen's condition, for seeing the cuts on her hands, but for doing nothing.
Both caused the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands. Both realized this, they made no excuses for it. Roland killed both criminals, members of the Middle and maniacs like Jae-hon, but also relatively innocent people, like Fixers like Pluto or Eileen's father (as I recall, he was just fixing gears, not creating a sect, I can't say for sure). Ayin essentially ruined the employees who were stuck in the main L Corporation building for thousands of years. On the other hand, according to Wonderlab, the employees of the subsidiary branches were able to go home, so they weren't doing so badly. Ayin was involved in some of Sephirahs deaths as well.
But the difference is motivation and purpose. Roland acted out of a desire to discover the cause of the Distortions, he was driven by hatred, despair and a desire for revenge. Not for Angelica, but to find peace for himself. He even killed a friend for that. And even in his bad ending, we learn that it brought him nothing but emptiness, drugs and eventually death from his close friends. I mean...he was driven primarily by personal desire, for his own sake. Aнin was driven by Carmen's goal, not his own, because he didn't believe in the realization of her dream, but he believed in Carmen. And he realized that his sins had to be atoned for somehow. As he said to himself, his sins were not simple, and he would not be able to enjoy the fruits of his work, but still, there was a chance that the people of the City would be happier, and all the employees of the Corporation should have gone home instead of becoming canned with the Anomalies. And the Realizations in the Library are a way for Angela and Roland to accept themselves and move forward with the help of the Sephirahs. And if you think about it, the Sephirahs themselves found their acceptance through Ayin, for they were not without sin before their first deaths, so the Core Suppression was as much to help Ayin from the Sephirahs as it was to help them from him. But yes, Ayn's attitude towards Angela was a bit of an asshole, to say the least. And yet he also found the strength to praise her and apologize to her at the end of the Library...
Of course, as many people as there are opinions, and mine is just mine, and yet, I'm really sorry to see so much negativity towards Ayin
People hate Ayin because he was a colossal asshole to pretty much Everyone around for no real reason.
There’s all the terrible shit he did to the original identities of the seraphim, then there’s the absolute Sisyphean hell he trapped Angela in, because she had the audacity to.. exist? Sure, he said ‘sorry’ in ruina but like come on dude.
The difference between Roland and Ayins crimes is Roland hurt people out of blind rage. He’d gone berserk without his wife, and was taking it out on easy targets who arguably deserved it, like The Middle, a horrible crime organization.
Ayin by comparison, took out his rage on people who trusted and cared for him. He tormented those close to him with the only justification ever given being “he was really sad Carmen died”. Then of course there’s the crime against humanity that is everything about how L Corp is run.
And let’s not forget his ultimate end goal was to create the seed of light, which according to Carmen, would have caused mass distortions around the entire city (or egos but the average person would just distort) because Carmen apparently believed this would be a good thing for humanity. So his end goal was even debatable in if it was a good thing or not.
The best you could say about Ayin is that he tried to make up for his crimes at the very last moment, but still did it in such a way that A) it still went towards his main goal anyway, and B) it made him look like the hero in the end.
It’s really no wonder people hate the guy
I can't deny that Ain's actions were terrible, of course. But even so, if we take the position that he did it in his right mind, and Roland did it in a fit of rage over the loss of Angelique, then it is also worth saying that Roland in his mind killed Iori, his teacher, mentor, and a person who cared. He killed Olivier, his best friend, who himself sympathized with Roland. He was ready to kill people from the Associations and Offices, who were not all terrible by the standards of the City. For example, the Liu's or the Shi's. And all for the sake of his goal to find the cause of the Distortions and take revenge. No matter how much you sympathize with him, is it worth all these victims?
In addition, Ain himself may not have known what the liberation of the Light in the City would lead to, he believed in Carmen's ideals, though not in her plan, and he believed that the Light would make people happy, reminding them of the warmth of the soul (although he may have known about it unconsciously, if we take into account Adam's words). And it is worth noting that the Distortions themselves arose because the White Nights were short, and the last moments were Dark Days.
It's hard to say that Ain is a hero in the brightest sense of the word, but is he worth all the hatred? Of course, he did a lot of evil, but he also did a lot of good deeds. Still, I can think of only Elijah and Giovanni who died because of his direct intervention/non-intervention. Michelle died because of the shame of her actions, Daniel, as well as Gabriel, Kali, Garion, and so on, did not die because of Ain's intervention. It was their personal complexes, traumas, and the results of their choices. This began to manifest itself in the problems of the Sephiroth, which Ain helped to solve, so that the Sephiroth and their past selves could finally find peace and the opportunity to move on, as we can see in the Library.

@@rafiuddinariffhan5470 is the seed of light not a good enough of a deed (not saying it redeems him but it's still a good deed) i mean,he was an asshole to Angela wich led to the seed of light being ruined but the best scenario and the one he thought would happen was the seed of light was gonna cure the "disease of the mind" in the city,even if it didn't do that either because of it's very nature or because of Angela's interruption is not really the point,but what he thought it would do and what he sacrificed for it,plus didn't visper just say he helped the sephirah with getting over their trauma? even if X is a clone of Ayin it's still Ayin just like Abraham,Adam and Abel are too.
Do i hate hopkins, yes, is he an asshole yes, but is he the worst person in the city, oh fuck no, mans just trying to live. But on another note i feel like we might see hopkins again in a future canto as a higher grade fixer, ( maybe 6 or 5), and i dont know why.
If we ever see Hopkins again I would like to see each Sinner get a line in the cutscene. Even better some arts of them just beating or getting close to Hopkins.
Gregor is gonna have some words and Ryoshu is gonna turn each letter in his name into a torture acronym so bad if he survive he'd change his name.

We seem to be certainly setting up a Red Gang and Blue Gang, and Gregor already has some representation in Red Gang, this would be his Blue Gang representative.

While I completely agree that Hopkins was just being smart, I think the biggest problem was just how clearly two faced he was. He walked in and left probably with the goal to get enkephalin since he knew it was there since he clearly cared less about his partner that just died.
He was upset that Yuri didnt know about the abnos that came after it collapsed... like those abnos already existed and she would have all of the information (shes not actually faust).
And blaming Dante for not pointing out the stuff in Hopkins pocket is a bit faulty as even if they noticed the stuff in his pockets, there was nothing they could do about it; they're in a room full of people who barely listen to him and has absolutely zero information about anything of whats happening. For all they knows, Hopkins brought stuff to help them all and Dante was just making a fool of himself.
If anyone is to blame, its Vergilius for having to high of expectations for the group after sending fixers who are in it for themselves, a wing survivor who is on the verge of a mental collapse, and a group of immortal "idiots" who are guided by an amnesiac who barely knows where they are even after being told.

I feel like Hopkins will appear again later on in Limbus Company. I kinda find it hard to believe that he is written in such a way just to truly disappear. I think we might see him again.
If we ever see him again there should be a joke boss against him where the only way you could reasonably lose this fights is with level 1 versions of either the worst IDs in the game or base IDs
As much as I hate Hopkins, I despise Sonya on a much more spiritual level. I want to 1v1 irl fight him so bad it's not even real.
Hopkins might've been a real wad, but something about Sonya's actions made me infinitely more mad at him than should've been reasonably expected.

@@tropicturtle9021 If I had to guess, it's how Sonya more or less presents himself in the same way a cult leader would. His attitude is one of absolute certainty about his beliefs being right, to the point that he berates others even when he isn't trying to. Sonya could most certainly be right, the way in which he communicates it could rub a lot of people the wrong way.

She later provides actual information about Abnormalities (granted, the one Faust already knew, but chose to not mention for some reason).

I Have no strong opinion on Hopkins, he is a low level mook doing basically what every other low level mook with a brains does... with a large side order of being an ass for no reason.. but still.
Now Philippe is extra-interesting because his action doesn't make him bad or pitiful, his mindset does. Philippe tries to survive and do his best (like he should) but never once until his distortion does he accept that he is not doing what he does for his own survival and his own benefit, he want to believe he is the hero and build this ultra self-destructive mindset where he is never in the wrong and also always doing stuff for others and none of these (often dead) others will recognize his great selflessness.
Philippe is not a complicated and interesting character because he run or does not run... but because he completely refuse to imagine himself as anything but a paragon of selflessness not mater his action.

If I had a nickel for every time a guy in a gacha game named Hopkins was hated, I would have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. (Fate/Grand Order in the Salem chapter and Limbus)

“Assholes are worse than villains” is a VERY common sentiment among people who consume media. There’s an interesting psychological element to it, but basically a person who’s biggest character trait is just “is a douchebag” is going to get a more visceral reaction from audiences than a fleshed out villain. There’s also something to be said about Hopkins more mundane ‘villainy’ hitting a lot closer to home for the average person.
And yeah, him completely getting off without any punishment definitely contributes to it.
Honestly i just wished for an Aya or Hopkins id to drop on in future but guess they weren't special enough for one.

Anyway, this kinda opened my eyes with Hopkins, who I still don't care too much about. Kromer is worse to me mainly because of her behavior towards Sinclair and prosthetics, but I 100% get why people like her. She's a great villain with a cool design. (Same can be said for Ahab)
Also can't wait for you to tear into the Concept Incinerator. I legit laughed when it was first mentioned.
My only point on the gasses is I doubt Vergilius gives a fuck lmao, especially since unless it's an acid cloud Dante is immune and could bring the sinners back. Plus most preparation wouldn't be the sinners job alone. it'd be a mix of theirs, Vergil's and the before team. (who seemingly never went in at all, same with the after team as they would have at least run into the serpent's crew.)
But yeah Aya's death was just everyone being complacent and not paying any attention. And well Yuri... that was a clerk moment so can't blame him there.
edit: as for Philip, I think there are 2 main reasons we hate him. 1. the crying angel's fight is obnoxious, and ends with one of the angels dipping. 2. He's not only a coward, but he's a coward who thinks he's brave and gets the wedge office killed for it. The first time he ran is one thing, but all the while preaching revenge he ran again before he awakened his EGO. And only then did he ACTUALLY mean to fight to the death, only to be teleported away by the thing given to him by Oscar.
I do realize that me saying Vergil was a bit of a moot point since he takes pleasure in seeing the sinners get humbled. Charon too to an extent, but yeah.

I always saw all this stuff with Hopkins gas mask as Dante not doing he’s job as manager because of the memory lost, Dante is the manager is the one that has to keep and look out that everything is under control, yea Faust and Yi San can guess that there can be poisonous gas in the ruins of L corp but it’s Dante’s job to bring the gas mask if that was the case, not Faust or Yi San job.

Like the guy, Hopkins was not a monster (or abnormality) who fights for instinct, a human (Or more accurately a fixer or the other antagonists in any of the games but more like the ones in LoR) go out swinging and having some goals or ideals, or a dog (also a fixer) following the orders and die trying to fulfill it.
Hopkins was a coward. He was so human. A damn bastard who just seems to weasel out of the bloodshed in the City.
