Good morning team! Welcome to today's episode, Greg. Ahhh the 1972 Islanders. Thank you for the memories, gentlemen. From laughing stock to feared hockey team in only 8 years. Loved this show, Gil. We have Vancouver tonight. Play as well as we played against the Oilers and we might squeak out a win. Everyone, have a wonderful day! See you all again tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!
Yeah, 1972-73 was a tough season for the Isles but by year 3 they were in the Cup semifinals and won a Cup by year 7. Hope we see a good performance tonight in Vancouver. Thanks for the comment, Tony. LGI
Awesome guest Gil! When I was a young boy, my dad was fortunate enough to get center-ice seats in the fourth row during the Islanders' first three seasons. At that time, I had only been following hockey for about two years, and I was a New York Rangers fan. But attending those games at the Nassau Coliseum made such an impression on me that I soon converted to being a New York Islanders fan. Those were truly special moments, and they remain some of my most cherished memories from those early days.
Thanks for sharing, Darrell. My first NHL game was the final home game of that Isles first season. The Isles lost to Buffalo and were outplayed badly but Gerry Desjardins kept the game close. It was a special time. Glad you enjoyed the guest. Have a great weekend and LGI.
Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? Welcome to Locked On Islanders, Greg Prado. I read up on their first season when I first became a fan. They came to be in 1972. They drafted Billy Harris, who went to Hollywood 8 years later. Then they drafted Lorne Henning, Bob Nystrom, and then Garry Howatt. I read up on Brian Spencer, a well loved Islander, hut he had a tragic life. The entire league, especially those dreaded Rangers, treated them like dirt. The Islanders upset the Boston Bruins 9-7, and at the time, it was their little Stanley Cup. As ⏲️ went on, the Islanders got better and better. They're in Vancouver tonight, and they've got their work cut out for them, too. The Canucks are good defensively. The PP is MOR. HAPPY 🎂, JOSH GREEN. He was a true journeyman. Hear from you later, Gil, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS.
Yeah, it was a tough season but it built the foundations for a great future. Spencer's life after hockey was tragic. I hope the Isles play well in Vancouver tonight. Good description of Josh Green, he truly was a journeyman. Thanks for the comment, Cindy. LGI.
GREAT show Gil, keep it up buddy. I remember the first season , I was 20 years old...did not matter to me about their record i had the utmost respect for each one of those players, they gave 100% every game.. Bless those guys..
It couldn't have been easy to go out there and lose 60 times in 78 games. It was all so new. Thanks for the comment, jimerrigo7142. The book brings back memories. LGI and thanks for the kind words.
Gil how about a book on the 74-75 team that team maybe was the foundation for the dynasty years. Garry Howat didn't he bet Dave the hammer Shultz in a fight he invented pulling the jersey over the arms. Did you own in the 80's PRIDE OF THE ISLAND?
I don't have that book but I'm looking for it now. The 74-75 team was special. I'd love a book on that season. Thanks for the comment, Joshuakendra7468. LGI
Good interview Gil. I only knew of Greg from his rock books....I had no idea he was also a suffering Isles/Jets/Mets fan too let alone had written some books on the teams. Will need to check those out!
Yeah, Greg loves his sports in addition to his music. Glad you enjoyed the interview. The book was a fun read. Thanks for the comment, captain2man713. LGI
Ahh the first season. 12 wins. bow tie saying isles could go for it or take the patient approach being a tuff sell in nyr market. billy, bobby n. expansion draft. billy h. first isle pick. 12 w season got isles the first pick/building block 5 in '73 draft and led to al. And what if isles outpoint flames that first season and flames take 5 first leaving lysiak to isles? Do isles draft 19 in '74? Does this change the whole trajectory of the dynasty? What if wha doesn't eye coli for team (ny golden blades) leading nhl to add isles and go south to atlanta? Do isles exist today living in the muddy murky waters?
Ah, the memories. The NY Raiders, then the Golden Blades, ended up at MSG and had to play at bad times on bad days. Taking Potvin was huge and Torrey turned down some big offers from the Habs and Rangers to trade that pick. Thanks for the comment Steven. LGI
Hey Gil, that book on the shelf right above, you're right ear. Is that Jean Potvin on the cover. In the mid to late seventies, when I was in grade school, I had a book from the book fair, with jean on the front . Probably 77 or 78 It was pre cup days! I can't remember the name. Anyway great show. LGI
It's actually Denis Potvin and Chico Resch...I think I know the book with Jean on the cover, but I'd have to do some digging. Thanks for the comment, Joseph. LGI
