I remember interviewing the author of We Want Fish Sticks. We both talked about how if the Fisherman was a third jersey, the fans might have received it better
"Fans being consulted" implies fans chose the logo - in reality they probably chose from four versions of the new logo with TINY variations between them.
Apparently the “Reverse Retro” program for the Isles was so popular that across the sound in Connecticut, the Isle’s AHL affiliate: the Bridgeport Islanders adopted practically the same logo but with a few alternations in color and lettering.
The Isles should have gone with the lighthouse as the main logo and the fisherman as the shoulder patch. Would have been better received. I own two Fisherman jerseys btw.
You forgot the best part about the terrible mascot Nyisles! "At one game, a young boy punched him and kicked him in the groin. An angry Di Fiore changed into street clothes and later found the boy in the stands. He bent down and whispered in the child’s ear, “I know who you are.” The kid never bothered him again."
Era when introduced was my main collecting time (have all home/road/alts from 1990 or so through 2000). I rememeber the uproar over these, they were also one of the most expensive at the retail level. Time has been kind to them though, or the rarity...Have a few here, blanks, signed Salo home/road, Pallfy, Lapointe and Soderstrom. Interesting to see how they've shot up in value 20+ yrs later. Perhaps the shoulder lighthouse might've worked better as a main logo?
God I hated those jerseys and logo at the time and I never thought I would ever like them….and now I do. I never want them to wear it on the ice, aside from that reverse retro jersey.
As someone who has no connection with the islanders, I feel like the name islanders does not do a very good job of making people think of long island specifically. I think if they wanted to let everyone know they were from long island they should have been called the Long Island 'insert name' and drop using New York in the name. You could then come up with a name like Fishermen, Seamen, Light Keepers. I feel like with having New York in the team name it just puts them in the shadow of the Rangers which is not only original 6, but has an iconic name and colors.
This old logo work’s excellent for the minor league team in Bridgeport and should be their main logo kinda like the lumberjack for Vancouver never took off but the minor league team in Abbotsford adopted it. I think the islanders should rebrand but with a lighthouse beacon design
Would have been a decent effort IMHO for a mid/late 90s expansion team. Terrible concept for a franchise that basically had nothing (spoken as an NYI fan) going for it except for history/tradition though.
Talking about team results as being linked to the logo is hilariously insane and shows how deep this guy is in branding 😂😂😂 The Fisherman logo is fantastic. If it launched during a successful season people would have loved it and the channel would be pretending the logo caused the success
That is insane. Which is why I never said that. I said the jerseys and logo changed, but the results for the team didn't improve. The Islanders still played badly after the rebrand.
Great video! But I have to heavily dissagree. To start it all, the Islanders original logo is good, that I give BUT there jerseys have always been BORING and SIMPLE. When they tried there re-branding in 1995, they really made something that did like equal good and fitted with there name "Islanders". Sailors and fishermen are what pops up in people's mind when thinking about Islander people. But lets put the logo change aside here. The REAL victory was the design of there new jersey look. The new jerseys with the waves and the introduction of there 2nd logo of the "Lighthouse" made them go from one of the leages most boring team jerseys to one of the NHL's best looking jerseys as seen in 4:53. They had those jerseys from 1996-1998 and looked so GREAT! BUT crying out loud they then abandoned there awesome jersey design and goes back to there plain boring vanilla style jerseys we see today still (!) I mean when I was a kid and now I have never paid attention to the Islanders games because I find there jerseys alone not make me interested in watching there team as they lack any identity. But between 1995 till 1998 I did watch them because suddenly they had an identity. And when abandoned I went back to ignore the team and still does because I can't stand there boring jerseys. The logo design final word. I think this logo really works as a third jersey logo, that much it works! And if I play the NHL video games, if there wave jerseys are not there (as they have not been for many years avaible for some reason allong with Sabres black/white/red era) I simulate those season games against the Islanders till I can beat them in late minutes because like I said, they have no identity.
For the original logo, I think it's fine but I've never been a fan. The NY is strong, but the inclusion the Islanders text looks very warped, and it awkwardly overlaps the island on the left. A modern refresh would help it a lot, but I doubt the team would refresh it after this debacle. Also I don't watch hockey, so I'm coming at this from an outsiders perspective with no attachment to any logos I do like the 95 jersey and logo, but in this case they feel very busy. The 2022 refresh does a good of reducing the teal to make the jersey feel cleaner. Plus the 2022 logo also reduces the colour and detail to make the design simpler. The whole rebrand felt very rushed, and a few rounds of amends likely would've helped
@@onwardsandupwards547 I respect that! But I don't get it, the 2022 jerseys liik just like they always have (?) plain vanilla looking and no details. That is what I liked with there waves and 2nd logo at the shoulders of the lighthouse.
i think this logo really works as a third jersey logo but not for the main jersey
No, it doesn't.
It's safe to say it was ahead of time. While I was watching I thought exactly that and now they are back. Whould you look at that!
I remember interviewing the author of We Want Fish Sticks. We both talked about how if the Fisherman was a third jersey, the fans might have received it better
Interesting topic and a great video, thank you! Some audio issues near the end tho??
Yes, thank you, that's been edited out
Hot take, I kinda like the Fish Sticks jerseys 🤷♂️
I agree. I mean the current jerseys are iconic, but these are much better than many, many awful jerseys we've seen over the years.
That fisherman jersey is fire. I have a white one.
"Fans being consulted" implies fans chose the logo - in reality they probably chose from four versions of the new logo with TINY variations between them.
No, they didn't. The marketing group hired was in charge. They chose it. There was zero fan input. And it was a joke.

Originals or the newer versions. I do prefer the 2022 redesign, reducing the teal and toning the waves down really helped the design
@@onwardsandupwards547 original. Teal was the official color of the 90s..
The fisherman merchandise came back at 2015 with hats and hoodies and sold very well since then every year they had Fisherman gear at the team store
2:25 lol I bet this agency consists of 3 dudes named Sean Michael and Edward respectively. Super creative, guys, good job!
SME was a pretty large agency, pretty sure it was bought by MOGO and became MOGOSME eventually. But yeah, not like a little agency by any means.

Audio issues near the end and a weird blank between 6:00 and 6:08 but apart from that, solid video mate.
Cheers, didn't spot that, so I've trimmed that out
Funny enough, Gretzky did end up finishing his career in New York… for the Rangers in 1999

Awesome Video
The fans would have loved the Lighthouse
2:15 Also alonside, having South Park.
Considering how horrendous the Islanders main logo is... I think the fisherman is an improvement

Main jersey material! Obviously.

nassau coliseum is pronounced nass-aw. like the country
Nah-saw… you’re welcome
The logo still sucks
The previous logo looked atrocious, the only reason to keep it was nostalgia
