What's Behind the Rumors Concerning New York Islanders Goalie Ilya Sorokin?
There are rumors concerning New York Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin and that he's "dealing with something" according to Elliotte Friedman of Sports Net. What that something is remains to be seen and neither the Islanders nor the goalie's agent will comment. Today we discuss what we know and what we don't know plus how the Islanders would handle the situation if Sorokin had to miss time in training or even the regular season.
Plus, Isles captain Anders Lee made a weekend appearance at a Mets game this weekend.
We have all this and more on today's Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

    Tuff one for isles if 30 goes down for any length of time. Isles will get a nice dose of sub par ahl goalies skarek and appleby in that case. Thank louzer once again for leaving no wiggle room cap wise to sign or trade for a goalie (unless 30 is ltir'd) and for leaving his sorry system lacking in nhl ready prospects in goal. Louzer should be ltir'd from gm'ing.

    Retain 50% and trade him to a contender at deadline, Brock Nelson would be a perfect 3C for a contending team. Hes also 32, now would be a good time to get some value out of him.

      It makes sense but it's not something Lou is likely to do. May not even need to retain 50 percent depending on how he's doing this season. Thanks for the comment, valitsemllaluilanavahyvaks3556. LGI.

      Raymond, it makes sense, but Lou wasn't going to do that. He may be able to get more at the trade deadline but he won't do that unless either the Isles are out of contention for a playoff spot or the team is unable to sign Brock to an extension. Thanks for the comment, LGI.

    I think if a decent deal is feasible during preseason to trade Nelson Lou should take it. When I say decent I mean an excellent prospect plus maybe a first/2nd round pick. The benefit would be to reduce the cap hit, however the islanders would need a 25+ goal scorer, or someone who is excellent on special teams.

    • @LockedOnIslanders
      @LockedOnIslanders 11 годин тому

      What Lou should do and will do are not always the same thing. I hope he makes a smart move and either brings Brock back at a reasonable term and salary or gets something good in return if the can't. Thanks for the comment, Mike. LGI.

    Definitely need to keep moving toward getting younger, Nelson is a rare breed, one of the few guys who has actually gotten better as he has aged. If we are out of it come the deadline they should look to move Nelson, Palms, and possibly Varly. Their return would be significant.

    • @LockedOnIslanders
      @LockedOnIslanders 2 дні тому

      I agree, I wonder if Lou would. It would make sense, but I fear extensions for too long a term and too much money as the alternative. Hopefully, the Isles will be in the playoff picture and it won't be an issue. Thanks for the comment, Ian. LGI.

  • @miscs75

    What are you trading Brock for? A late 1st, cap dump and mediocre prospect? Yeah, that’s not going to work one bit. Unless the return properly benefits the Islanders (aka not helping a cap strapped team scapegoat problems), it’s not worth it.

    • @LockedOnIslanders
      @LockedOnIslanders 2 дні тому

      By no means am I eager to trade Brock. The only way I see it happening is if a) the Isles are far out of the playoffs at the deadline or b) if Lou and Brock can't agree on a new deal. Then it's a choice of getting something for him or losing him for nothing as a free agent. Thanks for the comment, miscs75. LGI.

    • @LockedOnIslanders

      I don't think they should trade him, but he is going to be a UFA next summer unless he is re-signed. If they can't agree on an extension, it would be better to trade him at the deadline for something rather than lose him for nothing. I hope they agree on an extension but not one that is more than four years and at a cap hit that matches what he's making now but doesn't exceed it. Thanks for the comment, jamiepike6909. LGI

    If Nelson is traded, let's hope it is a package deal, freeing up 11-13 million in cap space. In return we need a player(s) that are almost done in development. Would rather have Roy have them on the team to finish polishing them, then have the go stale in Bridgeport, kudos to all our draft picks who decide to play college hockey then stagnate in Bridgeport. No player development happens there. Gil thank you for getting us thru the summer, your "Locked On Islanders" is the best around, all the others seem very "amateurish ". Good morning team! Wow Gil, way to throw something like this at us. I admittedly have conflicting thoughts about this. As a huge fan of Nelson, I say, there is no way they should trade him now. We need the potential excellently timed goals he has to push us into the playoffs. The business me says, sadly no player is an Islander forever so, let's see what we can get for him. The trade has to be made a year early vs. a year late. You certainly got some of my emotions fired up during this episode. I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you for what you do. Everyone, have a great day and a wonderful weekend. See you all again on the next one. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!! P.S. Grandson says, keep Brock Nelson and LGI!!

      Thanks for the kind words, Tony. It's all emotional, like not bringing back Martin and Clutterbuck. Great Islanders but it was time. Brock still has some years left and if they can re-sign him at a reasonable rate and term, I'm all for it. Tell your grandson not to worry, I don't think they're going to trade Brock unless they are out of playoff contention or can't reach an agreement on an extension with him. Have a great weekend and LGI.

    I’m totally against trading Brock. The simple reason is this guy is in tremendous shape, he carries zero extra weight and has no injury history. I would sign Brock to a low as possible AAV for six years. 6 x 6 stay on the Island. This is a unicorn type player, this isn’t a normal dude. He works at his craft like a Tom Brady. I also expect the team to be very good this year.

    • @LockedOnIslanders
      @LockedOnIslanders 2 дні тому

      Six years would be a lot of term for Brock at this age, but the $6 million is reasonable. I'd prefer 3 or 4 years tops. I agree, Brock is in good shape and like a fine wine, he's gotten better with age. Still, eventually father time catches up to all of us. I hope they don't trade him. The only way they do, as I said on the show, is if they are out of playoff contention at the deadline (which I don't think will happen) or they cannot reach an agreement on an extension and would lose him for nothing if they don't trade him. Thanks for the comment, Charlie, always good to hear from you. LGI.

    Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? Unless The Islanders are out of playoff contention, they shouldn't trade Brock Nelson. The PK needs to get it together, and that goes for The PP, too. HAPPY 🎂 NIKOLAI ODJICK. May he R. I. P. Before I go, Do you remember when The CCCP and The Red Army came to The United States to play some exhibition games back in 76? They made just about every team they played look like they still belonged in Juniors, even The Canadiens who would go on to win The Stanley Cup. The Islanders played The Red Army, and even though they lost 2-1, Trots scored the only Isles only goal, and he looked like a 6 year old who got his first pair of ⛸️ for 🎄. I bring this up because as much as I can't stand The Flyers, they beat them soundly, and with some blackmail from Keith Allen. It felt good to a Flyer fan, even though it was for one night. Hear from you later, Gil, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

    possible but not probable. Unless isles fall off a cliff louzer will hold onto 29 like finer china and give 29 a three year extention. Or louzer will kid himself 29 will re-sign before ufa and watch him walk away for nothing. Either way isles are fkd and fet nothing for their top trade chip by tdl or after season. Louzer better hope 29's production doesn't fall off a cliff as well lessing trade value we know louzer wont explore. And put 18 on full time pk duty. Gil...NO! Josh Bailey was a bum! He had a small period where he produced but was always a liabikity on defense. He often didnt care and was a huge part of Isles problems and inconsistencies. That doesnt deserve a night. There is no scenario where retiring his jersey is a possibility or consideration. Why because he was there for long time, dueing some of worst times? I mean to people celebrate their marriages that ended in divorce that were miserable and long suffering, just because they went on for a long time? Do people celebrate and honor the great depression or the plague?

    Isles MUST trade Nelson, Palms, & others by trade deadline. No more letting assets walk for free. Return for these guys will be significant. Team cannot resign 33 year old players. Nelson has been a really good homegrown Isla Der but all things come to an end.

    Hi Gil! I hope all is well with you and your family! I travel in the summer so I’ve been a little out of touch but I strongly support your dedication and hard work Gil! I’ve said it for years. Look at Boston, Detroit in the past, Pens of the past, a few other annual contending teams for many years that did not draft high--their scouts were excellent. Up until recent years, we’ve wasted or traded top talent and drafted many busts. In recent years it’s been much better. Gil, the organization has lacked high end scouting and minor league coaching. It absolutely burns me what they did to Hp Sang, Ishikov and even Whally. Why Wally? Yea he’s had chances, he’s played with the best we could have offered him but some players need different things to get out the best of them. I’m not sure he had that here. In for 2/3 weeks and out for a while. We should have left him alone-I feel we trashed his confidence, that’s just my opinion. We suck at allowing young talent to develop and for what? We allowed our older players to commit mistake after mistake, penalty after penalty and the young kids could not go boo or they were out!! Roy won’t allow that to happen anymore but it’s too late because I feel we’ve ruined some young players confidence. We are doing it to Bolduc I feel. Let the kid play consistently!! He plays on eggshells I feel. I’m hoping with the recent draft picks we’ve made, and I feel pretty good players--they can be given a chance to develop and eventually play. Why and how? These older players have got to go! Time to say goodbye to this core. They had their run and next year it’s time to really bring in our youth!! Lee, Palmeri, JG have got to go!! Nelson? Love the guy but he will fetch us a very nice return to draft with. Trading Nelson is a pure must this deadline--don’t care where we stand. Ok Gil -lol--I’m done. Enjoy your day!! Never Say Die!! LGI!! Wish we could draft another Bret Lindros-that kid could have been so special--could play and fight!

    • @LockedOnIslanders
      @LockedOnIslanders 3 дні тому

      There is definitely improvement needed in the way this organization develops prospects. As far as trading away some veterans to get younger, they should do some of it, especially if they aren't in contention this year. It wouldn't be a very Lou thing to do, but we'll see what happens. Ah, Brett Lindros, one of the great what ifs in Isles history. Thanks for the comment, Frankie. Always great to hear from you and LGI.

    Good morning team! Gil, excellent show. I love the mailbag episode. I agree with everything you said about our drafted players making it to the NHL. Time and time again, even when we don't give away our draft picks, the Islanders absolutely do have a problem getting those players to the NHL level. A simple reason for this may be, even though we do draft a young player with potential, while they spend time at the AHL level, are they getting the kind of coaching required to turn them into NHLers? Perhaps to help with the development of our draft picks, the organization should check if the minor league system is up for the challenge. If it's not, it's real simple. Change that program! Thanks again, Sir. Everyone, have a wonderful day! Looking forward to our next time together. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

    Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? If Lou Lamoriello would give the players a chance to develop, instead of turning them into trade bait, they would have a chance to develop. Do The Islanders still have The Black Aces program? Also, Lou Lamoriello needs to handle The Salary Cap much better than he's doing right now. The young players are going to make mistakes, HOW ELSE ARE THEY GOING TO LEARN? Wherever Josh Bailey goes or retire, I wish him well. HAPPY 🎂 BRIAN "SPINNER" SPENCER. The fans ❤ him to death. He was a hustler on the 🧊. May he rest in peace 1949-1988. Before I go, I have to tell you, I was 👀 Game 1of The 81 Finals between The Islanders and The MN North Stars, and even though The North Stars had a team loaded with rookies, especially Dino Ciccarelli, the announcer made our Islanders sound like they were long in the tooth, that particular night, except for Butch Goring and Billy Smith, most of the guys, especially The Dynamic Duo,were in their 20's. That's because isles operate as if drafting/development don't exist and ignore it like the plague. Drafting/development is weak as evidenced by bottom tier system and draft picks only needed for trade fodder and to rid isles of bad deals. How many first, second, thirds has louzer dealt away in seven years as gm? That lessens the probability of drafting a player who may actually make nhl and have an impact. And ahl b'port reeks of no talent as well. All a reflection of louzer and his ahl coaches who can't develop average/mediocre prospects, most who will never see nhl thanks to louzer's penchant for keeping his old run it back roster secure every season. The guys louzer does draft are all wait and see reaches from europe or college. And louzer has no eye for talent as seen in his first round draft flubs 10 and 26 and can't manuever up or down the draft to hone in on talent with lack of picks. The obvious solution would be a sell off starting with 29 and 21 to get draft ammo for future. But i wouldn't trust louzer or his scouts to cash in on those picks even if it did happen. Louzer did that in nj too. Took 'reaches' based on conte advise on draft day and hoped. Like i said before isles as structured have absolutely no grade A type prospects ready to push the old lugs for a roster spot who are comfy with their long term security. Coincedence or by design? Pathetic isles have only one prospect in top 130-the dropping talent that fell to them thanks to louzer keeping a first for once in eiserman. A guy who can score goals but has major ? marks as well. When will eiserman get to nhl and can he score goals when he does or will he forget how to score once drafted by isles like bellows and 26 did? At least snow knew how to use the draft finding 27, 30 3, 24, 53 outside the first round and stole barzal first from oil-the core of this roster all snow picks. Snow had his first failures. At least the one first that has worked out for louzer, 8, was gifted to him thanks to snow's hamonic trade. Its pretty bad when fourth, fifth round picks are isles top prospects and outnumber actual firsts in prospect system ranking.

    • @LockedOnIslanders

      The Isles lack of prospects and their failure to develop the ones they have has been frustrating. If it's by design, it's a crappy way to run the franchise. I know Lou doesn't trust young players but wow, that's sabotage. Thanks for the comment, Steven.

    Hi Gil. Hope you had a great summer! A key is going to be the play of Isles forwards and the decision making of Isles defenders. Frequently the Isles get caught up ice without the speed to chase. How many times did a shot fail to go on net leading to a breakout the other way? This is not a real playoff contending team so its going to be a double important to keep the puck in front of the D. Another year older this team is NOT trending in the right direction until this team has cap flexibility ie the departures of Lee and others. The number of 40 shot games will tell you everything about the team.

  • @tonypalumbo898
    @tonypalumbo898 6 днів тому

    Good morning team! Gil, with the defensive staff basically being the same as last season, I'm thinking the best way they could be better is two fold. Trust in Patrick Roy's system, and Sorokin returning to his form from two years ago. There is always room for improvement, but having a goalie play like he is capable of playing, he would be able to make up for any lack of defensive play, allowing the team to take more chances defensively. I'm not looking to get into situations where the team needs to score five goals to have a chance at winning games, but I'm looking to see if the team has the talent to skate that open type of play that scoring goals will be more frequent. Having goalies, at the top of their game, makes that a possibility. It would also be nice to know we can buckle down and win those 2-1, 3-2 games as well. Thanks again, Sir. Everyone, have a great day today! Looking forward to seeing everyone again next time. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

Quit giving up loads of sh goals would be a start. 2. A better transition game to get puck up ice would help. Isles d as currently structured lacks transition d man/speed with all the offense on back end coming from 8. And there is a so-called pacioretty bidding war going on. Go and get patches louzer.
