Biking the World’s "MOST DANGEROUS" Country (El Salvador) - Day 5

- My goal is to change the perception of El Salvador. Welcome to my journey as I attempt to ride my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. El Salvador has been consistently ranked as having the most murders per capita in the entire world, leading El Salvador to acquire the perception of being the "most dangerous country in the world". When most people hear “El Salvador”, their mind likely jumps to negative thoughts like murder and gang activity, but I KNOW there are beautiful places to see and kind people to meet in El Salvador.
Despite what I have heard in the news about El Salvador, I decided to purchase a bike in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, and attempt to bike across the entire country. My goal is to meet and understand the local people and form my own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”. During my bike trip across El Salvador, I’m hoping to discover what the media doesn't show us, a beautiful country filled with a beautiful culture and people. I'm hoping to create El Salvador news that is positive.
When I told others I was going to travel El Salvador, most people told me I needed to be careful. Most people said they wouldn’t visit El Salvador, let alone ride their bike alone across the world’s "most dangerous" country. Most people only know El Salvador through the lens of the media, and view El Salvador as a dangerous country to travel to and visit, especially as a tourist. However, I hope that my journey traveling El Salvador in 2022 can change perceptions of the country and even more, encourage you to challenge your preconceived ideas of El Salvador and form your own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”.
Of course, before traveling El Salvador, like any other country in the world, I would encourage everyone to research the country’s current situation beforehand to remain safe and optimize your time in the country.
I start Day 5 of riding my bike across the country of El Salvador leaving the town of San Vicente and with the goal to reach Cojutepeque. Similar to all other days on this trip, Day 5 starts out by climbing lots of steep hills. On one of those hills I almost got hit back a truck, so I pulled over and chatted with some kind locals while drinking a coconut. After a lot of morning biking, I finally reach the town of Santo Domingo, where I stop for breakfast. After some delicious El Salvador pupusas and a coffee, I end up gettin to know some of the locals in town. I learn to make tortillas... well kind of, and I run around the town with some kids, eating tons of delicious fruits. After saying goodbye to my friends in Santo Domingo, I continue biking toward Cojutepeque. After finally arriving in Cojutepeque, I head to the town center to relax and I end up chatting with some locals, who tell me that Cojutepeque is a little dangerous, however I felt safe during my time in Cojutepeque. I end Day 5 here in Cojutepeque and I get some rest for the last few days of my bike ride across El Salvador.
So far I have felt extremely safe traveling El Salvador and am overwhelmed by the kindness and hospitality I am experiencing from the locals. I can't wait to continue exploring the country!

You don’t know nothing about El Salvador don’t know sheet don’t give the wrong information about this beautiful country it is the most safest country in the world if you don’t know what
I think Melvin is talking about the past and might not have expressed himself correctly - El Salvador is approaching 150+ days with zero homicides, thanks to the new administration under Nayib Bukele. Awesome Video - thanks for sharing.
So cute that he's proud of his little brother knowing some addition. Then those little boys with their puppies!

Totally agree, Matt can you use recent data on your videos? Thanks
Exactamente! Exactly! I understand what you are trying to convey, but is not the best way to do it by using that header. Look at all the comments before me that are telling you that.
WoW WoW WoW que pasa aquí 😁😁😁

I don't think the semi driver was honking at you but the other car passing him on his left.
Oh my goshhh los mamonsillos , just chew the soft part if they are sour not good 😁👍🫶🏻
Thanks for the recommendation!
I bought cocos from the same lady about a month ago 😀
hahah small world! The cocos were delicious!
Cojutepeque looks like a very nice city. To be honest the guy in red did look like he was into something or not too well in his head, like you said too maney mixed signals.
Thanks for watching!
Really you are a nice a gentile man my friend, enjoy my contry
I also studied In Cojutepeque my dad is from there You should try their Chorizos since Cojutepeque is the City of Chorizos
Thanks for sharing this Alfredo, I will try it next time!
@@MattKramerTravels if you like chorizos you will love the ones from Cojutepeque they are delicious
YO! Matt thanks for making this video and giving a positive outlook of our pulgarcito. The fruit you ate is a talpajocote at least that's what I remember it being called (delicious). And do check out what the current administration has gone to rid El Salvador of the gang infestation we had which was mostly responsible for the crimes committed. Most people are still super friendly and welcoming despite the decades of violence it has gone through. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay.
Thanks so much Luis! I agree, everyone I have met so far in El Salvador has been incredibly kind and friendly!
Melvin attitude made me want to slap him over the phone 🤣🤣🤣 he was so freaking creepy.
Melvin was talking about the past, yes that particular town was full of gangs, now is safe just this year the government capture and put in jail more than 50000 gangs members and a lot came from that region. All of those gang members will serve from 20 to 45 years in jail just to be a member of a gang structure. So as you see over 70000 bad guys are no longer on the streets of El Salvador. El Salvador has not register a murder within 180 days and is counting. Enjoy your journey.
Thank you!!
Well to be fair, u were not. The truck couldnt move, the blue car was next to the truck (although he shouldnt be that agressive). And u were not on the white line. U were on the road. U had plenty of room on the right side to bike and give the cars/trucks their space. 🤷♂️
But glad its all ok ofc. keep it going. Enjoy it. It was amazing after that gladly. 👍
I invite you to search and read about the schools of the Americas
It's real story
Here in the United States I'm never going to show you that
Nowadays El Salvador is the safest in latinamerica
My goal with this video series is to share the side of El Salvador that mainstream media doesn't show, the beautiful and kind side to the country! I used quotation marks in the title on purpose
Melvin he don’t know
All things considered, a lot of people die by gang warfare here in Los Angeles every day as well (and I imagine every other big city in the U.S.) I wonder if people from other countries have that as a thought when they visit Los Angeles. I guess it's just a matter of being careful no matter where you go in the world.
That's an interesting thought, wee Peter. I think it's our responsibility to do our due diligence and form our own opinions of the world around us!
Here in the United States, you gringos never teach that.
It's not for speaking badly about your country and I'm not telling you because I'm talking badly about your country but here they have really treated us badly.
The United States has never wanted Latin America to move forward
The guy that was giving you mixed signals in Cojutepeque was from one of the opposition parties, Whom don’t want to see the country get a head on the hands of the new government
Why dangerous??? Poor man should not make those comments because they are not true.
My goal with this video series is to share the side of El Salvador that mainstream media doesn't show, the beautiful and kind side to the country! I used quotation marks in the title on purpose
Melvin ni hablar sabe jaja
I'm 15 years old in your country, United States and they didn't want to give me the papers and I haven't done anything wrong.
If you read all that and look for it, you'll understand why in Latin America it's like shit
Why keep calling it " the most dangerous country" when we all know it is not anymore? 🤨
My goal with this video series is to share the side of El Salvador that mainstream media doesn't show, the beautiful and kind side to the country! I used quotation marks in the title on purpose
Was the most dangerous . no the most dangerous . Any more
My goal with this video series is to share the side of El Salvador that mainstream media doesn't show, the beautiful and kind side to the country! I used quotation marks in the title on purpose
Why to risk yourself going to the most dangerous country in the world? You should leave immediately 🤷♀️

@@MattKramerTravels Ok Mateo, welcome to El Salvador next go.🤗
