I Biked Across the World’s Most MISUNDERSTOOD Country (El Salvador)

  • My goal is to change the perception of El Salvador. Welcome to my journey as I attempt to ride my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. El Salvador has been consistently ranked as having the most murders per capita in the entire world, leading El Salvador to acquire the perception of being the "most dangerous country in the world". When most people hear “El Salvador”, their mind likely jumps to negative thoughts like murder and gang activity, but I KNOW there are beautiful places to see and kind people to meet in El Salvador.
Despite what I have heard in the news about El Salvador, I decided to purchase a bike in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, and attempt to bike across the entire country. My goal is to meet and understand the local people and form my own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”. During my bike trip across El Salvador, I’m hoping to discover what the media doesn't show us, a beautiful country filled with a beautiful culture and people. I'm hoping to create El Salvador news that is positive.
When I told others I was going to travel El Salvador, most people told me I needed to be careful. Most people said they wouldn’t visit El Salvador, let alone ride their bike alone across the world’s "most dangerous" country. Most people only know El Salvador through the lens of the media, and view El Salvador as a dangerous country to travel to and visit, especially as a tourist. However, I hope that my journey traveling El Salvador in 2022 can change perceptions of the country and even more, encourage you to challenge your preconceived ideas of El Salvador and form your own opinions of “the world’s most dangerous country”.
Of course, before traveling El Salvador, like any other country in the world, I would encourage everyone to research the country’s current situation beforehand to remain safe and optimize your time in the country.
Day 10 marks the end of my journey to bike across the entire country of El Salvador. Today I start my day stopping off at a roadside food stall to enjoy one last delicious pupusa in El Salvador. After my pupusa, I ride to the last town in El Salvador, Las Chinamas, where I meet some local kids and reflect on my journey across the country. Within an hour of Las Chinamas, I finally complete my goal and reach the border of El Salvador and Guatemala!
Throughout my journey of riding my bike across El Salvador, I have learned how beautiful this country is. El Salvador is full of incredible landscapes and kind, hospitable locals. I've learned not to form opinions and judgements of a place solely based on what I see and hear in mainstream media, but to experience a place for myself before jumping to conclusions.

Welcome to Day 10, the last day of my journey riding my bike across the entire country of El Salvador. My goal in this series was to meet the local people, form my own opinions of El Salvador, and share with you another side of the country that you won't see in mainstream media. After 10 days biking across the country, I can confidently say that the people of El Salvador are some of the kindest in the world and that El Salvador truly is a beautiful country that is often misrepresented! 🇸🇻

I feel you overly stressed the fact that El Salvador is “the most dangerous country in the world” to create more interest in your videos. The fact is that it is no longer the most dangerous country. Also in El Salvador when speaking to strangers you use the more formal and respectful term “Usted” instead of Tu which is more familiar and ONLY used between friends or relatives. Very few people use TU, the common term used is VOS, which is common in Central America as well as Colombia, Argentina, and Uruguay.

I liked the whole series of videos of your journey across El Salvador. Thank you so much for your amazing effort to change the point of view most people have about this beautiful and kind country. As you mentioned, most people are friendly and kind especially to tourists. They for sure will do all they can to make a foreign feel at home all the time and safe too. I hope you come back and I hope our country will be then even safer than it is nowadays. Kind regards from El Salvador.

thanks for helping to change the perception that a lot of people have of El Salvador, but El Salvador is not the most dangerous country in the world, it's the USA. Here in El Salvador, we don't have daily mass shootings like you guys do in the States, we don't have massacres in churches, schools, movie theaters, malls, parks, concerts, universities campus, etc etc etc etc. But one thing a lot of people are going to try is, bike across the country, if you did it, a lot of us could too. You are welcome to come back anytime.

We were treated like family and had nothing but great experiences during our 9 days of cycling. Sadly, we do not typically video our interactions with people since we feel these moments are personal and do not want to make anyone feel awkward. However, these moments are amazing and for us is the number one reason we travel. We truly wish the good people of El Salvador all the best! Thank you again for sharing your experiences from El Salvador. Cheers ~Ron & Petra

I have been to 5 Latam countries, my very first trip in Mexico, I was anxious about my safety but everything turned out to be so much and amazing. Then traveled around Colombia, Peru, Cuba and Puerto Rico. I fell in love with the culture and its people, I can feel the connection, many things are familiar to me. Maybe because I was born in the Pilippines although our family moved to Canada when i was younger. At the moment I am planning a huge trip, backpacking accross central America, starting from Belize to Panama. It would be amazing making friends and good memories along the way, as I always do.

The data used by these outdated countries is currently the safest in the center and in Latin America for many days with zero homicides, it all started in 2020 when the police and army were more efficient, which led to international danger alerts being removed. The United States currently has an alert similar to Spain
Currently there is also a solution to the problem of gangs, they are almost extinct thanks to security plans and that makes El Salvador a safe country!
That is why many people complain about the information
Have a nice day and good luck on your journey
