Want to throw you another pro-tip NL: If you ever find yourself in a situation where you want to grab the idol but can't risk it (shopkeeper) then you can essentially defuse the trap by destroying the ground that the idol sits on. If you do this then picking the idol up afterwards will not trigger any trap-mechanism. You can use a bomb of course, but also pickaxe ect.
So next time idol is near shopkeeper its not a problem - but in fact just easy cash (you can sell/drop it right at the shop)

I think NL's inability to stop sprinting & slowing down to think attributes to more of his deaths than the troll engine.
In spite of all the angry people I wanted to thank you for rekindling my interest in games I already had but stopped playing like binding of isaac and introducing me to new games like FTL. I love the spelunky videos and keep up the good work.
5:56 "the bombs are worth more at this point, than a couple of gems". And that is the reason why you should ALWAYS buy a bomb-box in 1-1 and 1-2, because it's easy as hell (ha ha) to turn these bombs back into treasure before going to the black market :)

if you want super meat boy as a character go to the jungle - 1 or ice caves - 1 and find the damsel (monty) then you must find a big red sticky ball and throw the monty on it and go on it
you will be in a secred world aworm then you must find a fleshy pod and destroy it when you do that the super meat boy will be unlocked.

Hello Northernlion! Great Spelunky video! I just wanted to say in regards to your comments about obtaining enough money and not angering the shopkeepers; it might just be a good idea to kill off the shopkeepers in the black market if you have a shotgun. If you survive you will probably have enough bombs & ropes to last for the rest of the run and most of the shopkepers in the later levels can be killed by baiting them into traps & off cliffs or through tactical use of bombs.

NL I'd suggest not to run through the black market shops. Take baby steps. I've had my run ended more than 10 times by a boomerang man inside one of the shops. Their boomerang will get the shop keepers and anger them, thus killing you instantly. You've just been lucky enough not to encounter them there.

OK: I've made it to hell 4 times, and won once, you have to learn have to kill the shop keepers effectively to get to hell, because you need at least 4 things in hell: A jetpack, at least 30 bombs, Paste and a weapon of some sort. You cant get that many bombs and a jetpack while saving for a ankh, unless you are incredibly lucky and every crate contains bombs/boxes. Freeze rays in shops are the easiest way to get started, pick it up move a little and then freeze the shop keeper then jump on him.
That means its awesome, not terrible!!!

I don't know if this works in the xBox version, but in the PC version if you put a bomb right next to the idol and blow up the stone it's on, you can pick it up without the rock coming out!

Northern, I know this works on the PC version of spelunky, but I'm not sure if it works on the xbox version, instead of risking getting the idol and the boulder angers the shopkeeper, use a bomb where the idol lays and the boulder should not come with you still being able to get the idol, but again, this might not work on the xbox version, but I think you should at least try it.
