NL this is my fav LP of yours, don't let the negative comments bother you. The reason its so fun to watch this is because seeing you fuck up royally several times before getting better makes it INTERESTING
All that Northernlion needs to do is to remember the intricacies of Spelunky. Knowing these, he'll get a lot, lot more success. Some examples:
- Always try to sacrifice Monty AT LEAST twice, the kapala is incredibly helpful!
- At 09:10, he didn't need to waste a rope to trigger the arrowtrap, all he had to do was go on the other side of the web and it would've caught the arrow!
- At 15:45, he could've lowered himself(crouch-walk to the edge) and not gotten killed by the spikes.
this has been bugging me for a long time now, Northernlion, your bombs will blow up a two block radius around it, the best example of why this frustrates me is at 5:58 when you waste three bombs instead of the one you would have needed please let him know this people!
cont:
- Udjat Eye can only be in 1-2 ro 1-4
- Black market can only be in 2-1 to 2-3
- Moai Head can only be in 3-2 to 3-3
- Before killing yourself to get the Hedjet, explore the floor! You may be skipping several crates.
- Also important, if you have the kapala, KILL! Almost every enemy loses blood when hit. The Yetis in Ice Caves are a great way to get a ton of health(after getting the hedjet of course)
- Also, I may be wrong. But does NL know that you can throw stuff UPWARDS by holding up?
What I admire about your play style is how adventurous you are.

You're playing to expand your knowledge upon the game/
for your last two hints:
-He doesn't even know HOW to get the kapala (sacrifice two dogs in the same game). It was one of the last two videos where he sacrificed one dog and then came across multiple dogs next to altars that he brought to the exit before he had to kill himself.
-He realized it once and forgot about it after taking a break for a few days, giant spiders are still a common cause of death for him even though they could be easy source for paste.
I don't care what anyone says.. I love your "Go Big or Go Home", sense of play.
I won't lie - Northernlion is almost certainly my favourite UA-camr out there - I watch the videos for him rather than the gameplay - however, we can all tell he wants to get to Hell as much as we want him to - that's why I'm telling him to read more of the comments and slow down so we can see his reaction when he gets there and beats the game! :D
Actually he sometimes does read them, thus proving hes a good guy. ad you are totally right, I tried to record an LP and its CRAZY hard to talk and play well, especially when you are trying to make sense when talking.
I understand that - but as someone else said, all we want is for him to do well - we all want NL to reach Hell, and most of us are trying to be helpful when we offer our advice. If he chooses not to read them and keeps failing it's his own choice - I won't ever complain about more NL Spelunky videos. :)
When you're afraid that you might fall on spikes go for it, is what I learned today.

Seriously surprised to see NL didn't fuck himself over at the end, rather that the game flipped out at how well he was doing and felt it needed to correct the disturbance. Also: See how well you do when you have climbing gloves vs. the cape? You gonna buy them more often in the future? No? I thought not, NL. I thought not.
And the 3 ropes he used in the process as well.. hilarious
I like it when Ryan fails.
He's usually so cool about it, and even when he swears he sounds cool, calm and collected.
Out of the Saving Progress crew, NL is forever my favourite.
His ramblings, bad references, poor quotes and his admitted lack of skill just force me to watch :3

exactly, couldn't have said it better myself. Which is why i still watch NL, one of the best commentators on UA-cam IMHO. So not to say I don't love his videos!
By no means do I not want him to succeed.
He's probably one of the best learners I've seen.
He's not very fast, but he soaks information up like a sponge (though he does forget sometimes).
Look at his early BOI videos, then look at his later ones, he's become VERY good in comparison.
I can't wait for him to beat hell, but until then I'm going to enjoy his short comings :D

NL On the second run you did not have to waste a rope just to get the two gems just climb up to the right side where the gem is and the arrow trap should fire and get stuck in the web

Yes I have played this (many times), and I will confess I only reached Hell, I haven't beaten it myself since I haven't been on my xbox since I did it, however, I know for a fact that I learnt from my mistakes - which is how I managed to beat the game and managed to reach Hell. NL has the ability to reach Hell, but if he took our advice on board then he would be able to do it, I'm certain of that.
northernilon if you sacriface the dog enough you can get the kappla which heals you when the blood meter is full
Have you played this? If you haven't, then you can't judge him by not learning from mistakes... This game is pretty hard.
He does. most of his spelunky videos are in one session.

NL, if the ghost comes, make sure if your'e going for big money achievement or buying out the black market, have a bunch of gems on the ground in a very mobile area. The ghost turns them into diamond, ect for a LOT more money
Don't worry about it, Lion. You have your good runs as well as bad. Spelunky is a seriously hard game, and it doesn't help that the game fucks you every now and again on top of it.
Spelunky requieres plataforming skills.
Isaac requieres 50% luck 50% dodging skills.
FTL requieres 50% luck 100% KNOWLEDGE.
The first time I got to the black market, I was walking through the shops and then an exploding frog got hit by a tiki trap. It blew up one of the shops, and that was it.

You are right - some people do exaggerate the point and say "Hey NL you are the worst player ever" when what they mean is that he is not as good as some others. But some people are offering him help and he should just ignore the comments that tell him that he is bad. He isn't, and he could be amazing at this game if he just slowed it down a touch.

Michaelalfox usually posts his one hour videos every 2 to 4 days..
Northernlion's video uploading is shorter,and therefore,uploaded faster, plus, most of the time, you only have to wait 1-2 days.
You got till episode like, 112 to beat hell, Foxman does 1 hour videos
Haven't even watched 66 yet... I'll go do that now. :D

You're judging him very harshly considering the progress he's made, I mean he still makes stupid mistakes, but on average he gets further than before.
Also, in this video his last run was pretty good, I'm not even sure what happened to piss off those shopkeepers, but it really wasn't his fault.
The one thing I do agree with is that he has to learn some tricks, simple stuff like the effective range of a bomb, how many tiles you can fall without taking damage etc.
Actually if you count the ropes from the exit it is 3 ropes and 3 bombs where he needed 1 bomb ;)
That's 3 bombs and >2< ropes. Oh Ryan... *facepalm*
lol in this episode the Ujdat Eye was one 1-3. Just a heads up. This game appears to be mostly random.

You do need the Book of the Dead to get to hell, otherwise the whole go-to-the-city-of-gold quest would be pointless...and about Anubis II, you dont really need to kill him, but if you dont, he's gonna follow you through the next levels

But you also have to rember he wither has 1 long run the entire video, or 1 death about halway trough then he wins the next part
Also he doesn't record the video the same day he uploads it. He has recording sessions in which he does multiple runs in one sitting and then uploads them all later. So he can't make a change in a video that he already recorded.

Most of the people are just trying to give some advices to NL, thats not hating, but he doesnt read the comments and he still doing the same mistakes, thats why people are frustrated.
Well for one he wanted to get the 2k gold in the wall there, but even so he only really needed to use 2 bombs and not 3.

Michael takes his chances and uses his brain and learns from mistake, while NL takes it slow think to much about things and dosent learn from his wrongs. but he's more enjoyable somehow

you did not have to use two bombs just to get the key on your first run just use one bomb and a rope to get out and walk towards the key and therefore did not have to waste a rope just to visit the shop and buy bombs
Haha so true - it is probably why I subscribed to him! :D I just want to see a video where NL beats Hell, he deserves to and I know he has the ability to. :)

It's not like he NEVER reads the comments, in a lot of episodes of Isaac and Spelunky I hear him say things like, "So someone told me ...," "I was reading the comments and people are saying to ...," etc.
Ryan, you say you're the more bombastic player, but I honestly doubt that. I recommend you to kill more shopkeepers, so you get more items and don't need to worry about money. And you won't really get better at killing them by just trying to avoid them. They are barely a pain in the ass after the jungle anyway.

Yeah, I know right, but holy shit he is so much better than he looks... did you see the insane kind of shit that he did on Super Meat Boy back in the day... Dark World Cotton Alley A+ on every level... Not in 5 years of training could I come close to that...

Either way, I'm still rooting for you, Northernlion. If it makes you feel any better, the only game I've watched you play that I think you're GENUINELY terrible at is FTL. ffs upgrade your goddamn engines.

i hate it when he has 10+ bombs but doesn't use them to his advantage, like making paths, collecting treasures and destroying traps

Challenge to people who cry about him not being the best player: Record your own live commentary gameplay footage of Spelunky without making a single mistake.
Kids have such high expectations of people without understanding that them playing a game, alone, without talking, is much different than doing commentary while playing, worrying about the technical side of it, and trying to not waste all day on one video.
PS: No shit he wont read comments when top ones are "you suck"..
Ok, I have to admit. The game threw alot of bullshit at him at the end there. he did nothing to anger those shopkeepers, it may have been some accident with an exploding frog somewhere that he had no control over.

I agree - he does get much further than before, but in recent videos he is starting to degrade in his play I feel, and I just think he should have learnt from said mistakes by now - by both the comments people have been posting who are trying to be helpful and his own experiences of the game. I have no idea what caused those shopkeepers to get angry and as you say it wasn't his fault, but I just wish he would think before he acted rather than rushing in head first, like most of the time.
