Guide to Combat - ua-cam.com/video/9Q32QXyX4_Y/v-deo.html
I'm using the Steam deck.
I'm confused.
I thought it would be like Final fantasy.
Things I have learned in the first day of play:
1) when jumping on what looks like a totally reachable rock in the water, and it says "death" it really means death lol
2) you start off with quite a few potions and resurrection scrolls... It isn't like tabletop where such things are rare and expensive, so use them and free up spells for things other than healing.
3) health potions are healing grenades... Actually most things are grenades. Throwing stuff is super helpful! But when a character goes down, you can chuck a potion at them and they will be fine, freeing up the healing word spell slot.
4) shoving is almost always useful. Even if it fails, you often don't have anything better to do with your reaction, so giving a good push has a chance to break concentration, make the enemy prone, or force them to take fall damage. It's great!
4) even if it isn't your main character, always keep a high charisma toon up front for random conversations, and always keep a high perception character up front when in the woods or a dungeon.
5) nonleathal damage is really only for melee attacks. Toggling it on and shooting at range or casting a spell isn't going to do what you hope... Which is a real pain when the person you want to KO is running away.
6) wildshape does not label the shapes well. As an example, spider is giant spider, not a tiny little guy for sneaking and getting into small places. Save the game, try all your shapes so you know what they actually are, and then revert the save.
7) with rare exception, the character stats and mechanics are extremely similar to tabletop, which is great! I've built out 3 of my favorite 5E tabletop characters, and they all perform much the way I expect! It's kinda awesome! If you have a preferred build, it is likely going to work as expected! And the reverse is also likely true, allowing bg3 to be a great testing ground for ideas to bring to the table.
8) I guess it depends on your DM, but the game plays much more into tactics than your typical ttrpg. Being aware of your surroundings, using topography and flammable fluids to your advantage, and just breaking away from the grid system all work much more to your advantage. The only thing that doesn't work well is moving past characters. A friendly in the doorway during combat blocks your path and doesn't yield to you like in tabletop where that is only an issue with hostiles. But other than that, the environment will generally work to your favor if you choose to use it.
9) being downed in water is not a death sentence. In tabletop, if you are KO and in standing water, it is an auto death save fail. But in the game, even in deep water, it is a non-issue and death saves roll like normal.
10) It is hard to be good, and intent does not count compared to the dice roll. With a human DM it is easy to mean well, fail a roll and not get what you want, but no real harm done for the attempt. But in this game, failure typically means they will become hostile to you, even if there is no way what you did could be seen as threatening or harmful. So when trying to do good, or evil, just remember that the game itself is largely amoral and just rewards or punishes the roll, not the intent. I find this a little game breaking for the RP aspect of the game when you are trying to help a peasant out, and they outright attack you when they don't stand a chance, but it is what it is, and you need to know how the game reacts to make more appropriate choices.
11) pressing and holding A on the controller (or interact button on keyboard) allows you to search the area instead of being fiddley about trying to click on a specific item.
Overall amazing game though! I don't get a lot of game time hours in, but in the last 2 days I've sunk in 10 hours already! That is more than I typically play in a week or two! Takes something special to have me put in that much time, and it is totally worth it!
Lol nice advice on grenade potion on fallen team mate.
I like the last one. It's like dead eye on RDR2.
11) pressing and holding A on the controller (or interact button on keyboard) allows you to search the area instead of being fiddley about trying to click on a specific item.
Oh...so the order of characters actually matters? I thought it was the character you've picked as the one you move that should be the "chosen" one with said top traits. I think I've had the game still do a push for a certain character to speak with a sudden creature or such and they were not on top of my list. I went through a passage and right as I emerged, there was a dialogue with a creature and one character kept barging in to talk, even though I had cast speak to animals on another and had them chosen as the character I moved with and opened the passage...Meh.
Re #11 what button is interact on kb?
@@phairest maybe he's talking about left alt. Holding it will highlight all items in an area so you don't have to hover your cursor over every pixel to find things that might not be plainly visible. Edit: Not *all* items, but it can be useful to see what you've already looted too
Thanks, I really needed this! It’s my first time playing a game like this.
Been seeing your comments on multiple videos regarding this game, hope you're enjoying the game! I'm on the fence whether I should get this game or not, especially since I'm not familiar with dnd
@@sinofpride6486 Same! Honestly, it looks like too much work.
@@sinofpride6486 Dont judge me but i'd reccomend doing what im gonna do. Pirate the game, play it for a few hours then uninstall and buy it if you enjoy it.
@donatotusi9140 honestly, compared to many other dnd based RPGs I think this is very easy to pick up and everything will come to you fairly easily
@@sinofpride6486 So I just dove in head first with Zero knowledge of dnd or this style of game. Took a couple of hours (playing and watching YT videos) to understand the mechanics but I can say it's worth it for me. I play a lot of CSGO/LOL but really enjoyed Zelda and TES (morrowind all the way) and this game is just a delight. Nice to be out of the salt mines for a bit and play a nice relaxing game that the Mrs honestly enjoys watching too.
Couch coop split screen with the wife is harder than tactician difficulty with mouse + keyboard
So true… 😂
Why?
😂
@@dominika3762try and find out
Yeah why?
Pro tip: The commander on the ship with the Everburn blade seems nearly impossible to kill in time on tactician. But you don't need to kill him to get the blade. Shadowheart has the Command spell which you can use to make him drop the blade and all you have to do is pick it up. Make sure you pick it up with your main character though.
*Edit* - Apparently you can pick it up with anyone, I had a bug where it was deleted when Shadowheart picked it up. YMMV
🗿🗿🗿🗿
That information has blown my mind. May all your rolls be Critical Success.
I wish I knew this , but I couldn't kill him in time and I moved alonge. Now I'm reluctant to start over , still sucks hehehe
@@coldtouch I wouldn't be too worried, it's a solid early weapon with a nice benefit, but you find plenty of good weapons in the first few areas. As for the burning effect, you can dip your weapons in fire (or even a candle you carry) to get this on any weapon, however it is less convenient. I personally didn't grab it because I didn't realize Shadowheart had access to command and I was too busy going full loot goblin on all the corpses in the area... the mind flayer dies surprisingly quickly on tactician if you give him no help :P
Not all heroes wear capes, thank you😊
Finally a beginners guide for beginners! I'm a total potato and have never played D&D before, I only heard about BG3 a few days ago and most noob guides I've tried using just left me with more questions and I'm just staring at the game with a blank stare on my face and no clue what I'm doing.
I don't know anything about turn based combat or rules or anything. So watching this has helped and things are starting to make more sense, I didn't even know about most of this stuff, so many thanks for the helpful video.
Happy to help
@15:45 If you have a look at the portraits, Shadowheart has the crossed swords indicating combat while Tav has a Downed icon with three arrows pointing up and three down, one of which is red. I didn't know what they meant before but it makes sense now as a Death Save counter, just look at the portraits and see who to prioritize for heals.
Incredibly helpful, the spell slot section completely answered all my questions. Amazing work as always!
you can use your controller guys
Thank you so much for this video! Several things you talked about I had no clue of - I actually got a pen and paper and took notes!!
Something that all games with a weight based inventory system should start implementing is a weight to value ratio sort option in the inventory menu. Its not that important in BG3 since you can just teleport to camp and drop stuff off to sell later but it would be extremely useful in games where you need to actually carry your items to the nearest merchant to sell.
They have this. Press tab to show entire groups inventory. Top left of the screen has a sort drop down. Press “weight” to sort by weight.
@@nichole2960they said weight to value ratio sort. So a 100 gold per pound item would come before a 50 gold per 2 pound item.
You can send stuff back to camp from the inventory by right clicking the item. No need to go back yourself.
Why trouble yourself with trivia stuffs when you have the world to save?
P. S I'm. About to start playing 😅
Good idea. You should get into game development if u have lot of them
the number one tip i can give you after playing for awhile now is this and wolf you should steal this and tell people: always have a druid or a cleric with you, so if you want to have someone with you besides shadowheart who you should change to a life domain, you should reroll someone as a druid and flip flop the responsibilities, can really help a new player who is going in with to many squishies. happy hunting and loving it so far! ( difficultly tact )
This is my first foray into any DnD type game. I'm seriously overwhelmed and struggling to understand all the elements of this game. Thanks for the video! It definitely helped clarify some of the basics.
Yea there’s a lot of game systems. Take ur time in the beginning learning all of them and you’ll enjoy the game more as u use unique ideas to solve problems
Been playing BG3 since Early Access released and I’m still learning new things about this game. Thanx for another great guide.
The amount of help this has given me as a new player is immeasurable, too many useful tips to list. THANK YOU Wolfheart!!
Thanks! This answers a lot of my questions!
I watched many other Beginner's Guides and this is by far to the point and easy to follow, thank you.
Great video thanks for going through all this. It all makes a bit more sense now.

Whole video is already worth the watch for the shift-c hotkey. Thank you.
0:33 You can also rotate the camera with Q and E. Fits quite well with using WSAD for moving it.
Excellent video. I really apprreciate your intonation tricks that helps to focus on the video. Cant wait for evenly great explanation of that ability skill proficiency mess
4:30 THANK YOU! I was looking around in the keybinds for a "Highlight all lootable objects" or similar button, but I couldn't find one.
This is the video I was looking for. Great explanations, simple to follow.
Thanks for watching
The best and easy to understand video guide I have seen so far, thanks!
This helped me sooo much thank you! Even tho it’s very basic knowledge of mechanics , that’s exactly what i needed! Much more understandable now
Thank you for all the amazing bg3 videos Wolf! ❤
Thanks for all the great detailed videos. Loving the game so far - not that I have got for but playing a Monk for the first time and enjoying it.
I appreciate the info, its definitely helping my first play of this type of game and im loving it 👍🤜
Just the guide I've been looking for. Thanks!
I recently started a new game play, its my first time playing this type of game and it appeared to me that im missing something, cause it was quite hard for me, so i was looking for some guide or better tutorial than provided by game itself and...wow! That's a really good guide, it helped me a lot, like it's exactly what i was looking for, great explanations, really logic and easy to get, I also like that your use of your voice makes it just not boring, im grateful for that! Awesome guide!!!
this is hands down the best guide for a beginner, thank you so much i just got into this game and watching this got me excited to open up the game again!
Thanks for watching
I'm not a begginer, but I just like your channel, so I will watch it anyway.
Thank you for the great breakdown I really needed the hot bar breakdown for spells ❤
Hey Wolf. We spoke on your live from 01/01. Told ya I'd watch your beginner vids lol. Great video! Watching these and your LP's have helped me so much!
Well thanks for coming over to the guides. Godspeed!
I’ve learned quite a few things, thanks so much!
THANK YOU for this! it is MUCH needed.
Thank you for this outstanding video. I'm no stranger to D&D (I'm 63, and started playing in the early 1970s from the original pamphlets, Greyhawk, Blackmoor etc) or CRPGs, but haven't done D&D since 3rd edition. A great deal of detail to take on board in the early going in this game, and this is extremely valuable. Thank you, thank you!
Thank you! Ive been waiting for this!
I played 24h straight yesterday, it has veen decades since I was this excited for a game release!
Great video overrall, but you should have included re-specking yourself and your party members in this video too. No biggie though, as we all learn at our own pace and as they say, "Practice makes perfect".
True! Wish I did. There's so much info I knew I would forget something
Wolf, thanks for the refresher course on the character screen!
The expression "this is a point-and-click game" was amusing :P
PS: I added your video here to my guide on Steam.
To me as an absolute beginner this video is extremely helpful! Thanks a lot! 👍
This was incredibly helpful, thanks for putting this together. BG3 should legitimately have this as some sort of link for brand new players to this genre of game.
I really needed this. I went in blindly but I was struggling to figure everything out😭. Thanks Wolfheart!
Oh my god, thank you so much! I have been struggling with this game for four days now, and completely clueless as to how to play it. (Still having a ton of fun with it, regardless). I’ve been slowly figuring it out, but you helped so much! Thanks again. ❤
As someone who is completely new to this type of game… THANK YOU! Had to start again as I missed so much
This is extremely useful and answered loads of my questions. I am going to have to pause the vid and learn what I've seen then come back because theres so much
Kudos Wolf! This is exactly what I needed! 😊
Cheers
Thanks so much for this. I’m installing the game now first time playing a BG game so this will help. Appreciate the time you put into this.
10/10 video. Thank you. Played first month of Early Access and so much has changed
One of the bests videos of its kind, clear and short!
Awesome vid wolf! Thanks for a lot of clarification on controls, was insightful Im curious if you also tried using a controller as well and if u try it would u consider making.a guide for controller controls for it as well, love the vid keep up the great work man
This is amazing. My brother was just saying how unfriendly the game is to teaching players. I sent this to all my friends. Thanks Wolf!
Dude, thank you for this. First time I'm playing a game like this, and I have to be honest....it's pretty overwhelming. I absolutely love it though.
best begineer guide ever
Very well explained. Best tutorial I've seen of this game!🤩
Phenomenal video on the basics, thank you so much!
Your channel is a gold mine, guides are so good. Been watching your, beginner, class, combat guide. Well done
Appreciate it!
Omg thank you so much. FIrst time playing a game like this and I've been struggling so bad.
I fell down that church floor into a bandit camp right after I got done a battle. I thought I was done for but thank god I noticed those oil barrels that the 6 bandits so helpfully gathered around 😂
thank you i been looking for something like this
Perfect introduction to the ui! Thank you very much!
Thank you!, answered a lot of my current questions!
This was the best one I've watched so far since this game style is so new to me. looking forward to your combat one. Thanks!
Happy to help
Great job! This is by far the best beginners/basics guide (all the others I watched weren't basic, not organized in a logical progression, didn't explain the UI, etc.).
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for breaking this all down
You're welcome. Thanks for watching
In case anyone else was wondering about this: I've seen someone play with controller and it controls how you expect with the camera zoomed in for a third person view. L1 I believe brings up a wheel for shortcuts
Ty 4 this video. Just started playing and had no idea how concentration worked.. now I do
I'm not a total newb but I still learned a lot from this video. Thanks!
Best beginner guide so far. Nicely done
Perfect intro to the mechanics. Thank you.
Holy hell I needed this video! Thanks!
Watching and liking this video tutorial because you deserve so much views and subs!!
I never learned to play this game genre this video is very helpful.
This is the best beginners guide I've found thanks so much
This video has been very useful the amount of things to learn in this game is staggering 😂. Thank you!! Wolf 👌👍
Awesome video!! Helped me a lot! Thanks Wolf
Thanks for watching
Glad you’re enjoying the game. Can’t wait for more of your content.
🙏
Wolf, one thing that wasn’t mentioned about the custom bar is that when you put things there you actually are assigning them to hotkeys - at least the first nine are assigned to hotkey 1-9, so you can just press 1-9 to access that action. Like for me, since I play a Warlock, 1 is Eldridge Blast (of course!😂)
That is such a lifesaver! Just going to go rearrange all my bars right now.. 😂
Amazing, the best beginner video on youtube and I have watched a lot in the past few days.
appreciate it
Appreciate this, haven't seen anyone zoom in on the taskbar and explain each thing, great video so i can get use to the look and set up before the PS5 release!
Thanks for watching! Excited for you
FINALLY a clear explanation of the hot bar! 🙏🏻
Nice job mate Lovely work , i,m watching beforehand
Lot of useful tips. Had no idea about hp throw . Tkank you for this video
Wow, what a great guide video, one of the best I've seen. Keep em coming!
thanks!
Just wanted to let you know this guide helped me so much. I’ve watched it over several times and it’s really helping learn the ropes. Can’t thank you enough for the tips and explanations for everything! Cheers!
That group sneak key is very helpful to know.
the sounds of the blade traps earned you a subscriber 🤣 love the video😍
Finally got the flame greatsword, changed Shadowheart to tempest Cleric. Game is gonna be fricken awesome! If ever ya need a break down the road, you should check out Suikoden remaster when it comes out. But I feel like you'll be playing this for 10 years to come lol. So much content 😊
Very good info for overwhelmed folks live me... Thanks!
I played early access for 20 hours and this was very helpful
Super helpful! Thank you!
great vid i'll be coming back to time and time again. thanks!
Much needed and very well made, thanks a lot!
🍻
Thanks for this video and the combat video. Just watched them both, need that game and UI knowledge, super helpful! ❤
Awesome thanks!
Thanks dude your doing a great job, I hope your happy and proud of the channel. Keep it up and thanks again Brohahn
Thanks a lot!
Super helpful, great tips. Thanks!
this was a super helpful and useful video! thank you. I didn't play any early access so am unfamiliar with all the things you are able to do in this game, so if you make more videos like this going forward (like to what extent your character can interact with the environment and what not, or anything else) it will be greatly appreciated. Keep on the good work and content!
This is the best beginner video i have seen!
