YOU ARE AMAZING! I can't afford CC. But I've just purchased some reusable vinyl on Amazon and with all of these tips I CANT WAIT to make my own stencils soon. Game changer for us budget challenged people lol. THANKS Y'ALL 😊
Just wanted to update after I tried it. This works really well! I used 631 Oracal (it's what I had), heat n 'bond ultra (same as you suggested) but instead of tulle, I ordered some 110 silkscreen mesh. I also don't own a heat-set press so I used my regular clothing iron (with something in between the iron plate and the stencil so I didn't get my iron plate gunked up). The first time I ironed TOO long and my wax paper stuck to the top of the mesh and "melted" and it wasn't salvageable because the wax paper literally melted onto the mesh. Second time, ironed on a lower setting and it worked perfectly! I've used the stencil twice so far and it's worked well both times. I rinsed with water, let it dry and it was still sticky. BTW.. I own a Silhouette Cameo and found that the cutting on my mat using a brand new regular cutting blade and the Cut Heat Transfer, Metallic Setting (Blade 3, Force 33, Speed 5, Single-pass) worked really well. Cut through the layers of vinyl and adhered heat n bond but not trough the back of the peel-off paper backing of the vinyl. I was able to weed easily. Thanks so much for this tutorial. Can't wait to make more stencils!
So excited it worked well for you! (and a big thanks got the silhouette settings! I have a Cameo 3 and definitely plan to do more Cameo specific things) I found a spray heat and bond product and love it even more. This way when its being cut there's no extra layer so intricate cuts are easier. But the downside is the weeding lines are harder to see. I think both heat n bond products work great on these, though. I choose which form to use depending on the design I'm making. I also pressed too much my first trial and had the glue all over, lol! I think thats the trickiest part, getting a good press without overdoing it. Thanks so much for letting me know how it worked and sharing more tips!!! ❤️
Hi Tracy!! I want to try this also, thanks for the specs. I have a quick question, once you used your stencil did the silkscreen mesh leave behind a texture?
@@dpchmd101 I think you are asking if it left a mesh design/texture on what I stenciled. In other words, can you see the silkscreen mesh pattern in the paint on the design after it's stenciled? Not at all! I wish I could add a photo to show you. I used the Chalk Couture black INK (not chalk paste) on mine. It worked really well.
Lora Ray it has to do with the size of the “holes” in the mesh but I don’t know the specifics on 180. Google “110 verses 180 screen print mesh” and you should get some hits. I went with 110 because that was the “average size” used for most screen printings based on my research. HTH
OMG! You have changed my life. I was just sitting here cussing myself for buying this Chalk ink crap. Not really thinking about the whole mesh in the stencil until I tried to do it on a coffee cup with straight up stencil only. It was a MESS!!!! (Thankfully if removed in a timely manner it comes off the cup - Thank you Jesus!) So now, back to being super excited...I am going to try this to make coffee cup stencils.GAME CHANGER! THANK YOU!
I'm a little late to the party here, but so thankful I found this tutorial! I've been searching all over for a practical guide. This did the trick. Thank you!
Thank you!!!!! I've been looking for a tutorial on this FOREVER!! Everyone just tells me to buy the ones they are selling. But I wanted to make my own.
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I used adhesive vinyl/generic contac paper, from dollar general and and old sheer curtain! Swiped my paint on in one direction (cross grain or brush Mark's on wood) and it worked great! First time I swiped with and across the grain and remembered silk screening in grade school and teacher stressed to swipe either up/down or across. This helps tremendously for paint bleeding underneath! I did have a bit of a problem for depth of settings but I believe its because the contact paper is thinner than regular vinyl so I'll have to lighten up the settings! Also tested the restickability, haha not sure if that's a word, and so far 7 times and still sticky! Thanks again. Great explanation!
You are so down to earth. you really need to do more videos. I have also bought cheap sheer curtain from Walmart to use for screen. I have seen others use this so I will try it and let you know how it comes out. Thank you for the video.
Wow, thank you. I would like to do chalk couture, but it is expensive, so I was just looking at how I could make my own. I watched your video, first, because it was short. I really like that you get to the point. I see you haven't made any new videos, but they all look like they will help me, so I subbed.
Hi, I made my first reusable screen design today after watching your video !! I used polyester curtaining instead of tulle. I am very happy with it, my first design was to detailed but my second attempt using a simpler design worked. Thank you very much
I went to peel the back off and the whole thing came apart. I bought a light heat bond, do I need stronger?? I used 651 vinyl. And a cut sheer curtain.
Thank you very much or sharing this secret. I am so glad I found this video! Can’t wait to try it. Going to make my shopping list now and head to the store tomorrow! Thanks Again!!!
I have seen this and it inspired me to test different materials. I have used htv vinyl and silk screen mesh and used this method just with the htv. Works great. I just tape the htv down to surface and comes up with a clean image. A little thinner than 631. I have used 632 in top and bottom of mesh and find the htv does better. Any 631 stencils I have made have pulled up wood particles, even if "fuzzed" up. Great tutorial! Thanks for the inspiration!
So you know how Google is listening to you when you talk and then you get suggestions or advertisements about what you were just talking about???? WELL I think UA-cam just read my mind because it suggested you right when I was thinking about how to do this! Thank you so very much for sharing this!!!
Tina May, thank you SO much! You are too sweet ❤️ I picked up some blanks and actual silk screen mesh to do a Part 2 showing the stencils in use and being cleaned (the tulle helped show the visual process but silk screen gives much better results, overall). BUT I also stumbled upon some new adhesives that I’m testing that I think will work easier. Same results but the process of making them would be a lot easier esp with intricate cuts. It’s just been a hectic couple weeks with back to school and general craziness (I have three boys, 5 and under. My oldest lil guy is special needs and between the three of them, there’s never a dull moment at my house. Lots of love but LOTS of chaos ❤️😂). I have some other really neat ideas that I haven’t seen before I’ll be sharing soon, too! Thanks so much for this. I recently became intrigued with Chalk couture after not being successful with traditional stencil methods. I like for my projects to look like more than a piece of vinyl slapped on them. LOL> Worked great except my wax paper stuck to the vinyl too. Was able to soak in water and gently scrub to make usable. Will reduce heat and time next go around. So excited to try them out.
Darn now I want an ez press. Wish I had seen this before labouring over making a traditional silk screen and the huge mess of struggling to apply the stencil to a large mixed media artwork. I wasn't sure if I wanted an ez press. Now I def. do! I have traditional screen mesh so I'll use that.
Lin P thank you so much! I have so many fun ideas that I’ll be working on the next few weeks. I try to stay away from the things that already have many videos done on them or at least add an innovative twist on them.

@@designyourlife718 I would really like to see you use a stencil you just created in action. Than you for the great video. I didn't understand some of the things tracy was saying about emulsion & the 110 vs 200? but i'm making my shopping list :) and I have subscribed ! cant wait for more videos
Hello. I can’t wait to try this. I’m new to this but can someone explain to me why you need the tule or the mesh? I understood everything up to that part. Because if it’s sticky and you lay down on something and you use the paint or whatever you use, it seems like the mesh would be in the way. And you will have lines from the mesh in your words or picture you are using. I don’t get that part. Thank you
Hi, I just attempted to make two (on the same sheet) and it was a bloody disaster lol. I used permanent Avery Denison sign vinyl (that I use in my Cricut maker no problems) I bought the super adhesive sure and bond I put the rough side on top of the vinyl and pressed and that was fine, waited for it to cool, then put it through the maker and cut the design. Weeded negative space then got some 110 silkscreen mesh and heat pressed it on top of the design where the adhesive could be seen on top of vinyl and it was sticky looking after being pressed. I pressed a bit longer but was still a bit sticky looking. Cut the two stencils in half and put both onto glasses, the vinyl actually came off onto the glass where the inside of letters was like the circle inside the d, e etc and applied the couture ink and it didn't cover properly and very poorly so I had to completely wipe off and clean the glass. Don't know what I did wrong.
If they lose the stickiness, just spritz it with some spray adhesive (non permanent). I had been doing this with iron on and ironing it onto the silk screen I get on Amazon, but I think this way is better. I can’t wait to give it a try.
Editing at top. To note its better to use parchment paper not wax paper. Made to go in ovens, no wax residue. I missed that the 631 vinyl is removable! Thats interesting. In future I may buy that to do my hand cut methods. That Ive not tried yet! But adding best methods of all you crafters together may help me do a better poor womans methods. Tulle is great idea to test but may by silk screen mesh. You know I did the very old fashioned method of silk screen in the 70s! Im old but still creating! Im glad there is a lot of self creativity out there now and helpful people on the www! Thanks again! ok late to comment. I find this interesting. Im old, old school, cant afford any gadgets. I have to rewatch this, confused how it was made sticky? But more so like the idea of the mesh method.I bought thin portifolio folders to cut my own and a cheap wood burning tool with a hot knife tip. Thats how many are cutting theirs by laying over an image they want to turn into a stencil. So Ive been looking up many things. Including how to make my own self stick adhesive. I had some spray on few days ago at Walmart but had to run to restroom and a clerk took basket and cleaned it all out! They looked in back but never found the spray again and last one!! But another person I follow I just watched her make stencil material by laminating a pouch with nothing in it. My $5 thrift store laminator broke so Ive just been ironing. Not the same but I got idea to use a thing my partners son gave us. Those copper mats you use to cook fish on a grill. "As seen on tv" kind of item. Ive been using to help laminate with my iron and I also press and dry flowers. Helps with that. But use parchment paper instead of wax paper. It holds up to heat as its used to make cookies on and has no wax...unless you want the wax? Ok, reviewingt his again. Oh I sew, so I do have many types bondable interfacing which heat and bond is. Ok rewatching later to see if I can put his all together for Poor womens stencils! Thanks so much. I will see what other videos you have!
Thanks so much for your tutorial. I had all the parts but couldn't put it together. I made my first stencil and love the results. I would use a real heat press. With the cricut press it moves to much which puts the adhesive on the screen. Thanks again !
hello thank you so much for this tutorial, I am having problems with the heat n bond the glue is getting in the negative spaces of my stencil (on the silk mesh), what am I doing wrong? I'm using an iron. thank you
Thank you for the tutorial! I have been trying to come up with a way to accomplish what you have already figured out for me :) Joining your FB group so I can keep learning from you!
Thanks you! I found some spray adhesive thats heat activated. My theory is with a spray more intricate cuts can be made since I wont have to cut with that extra layer on top. I tried loctite spray but it would dry too quickly while weeding (you have to spray before weeding to prevent adhesive from being in the negative space). Hopefully with a heat activated spray it will have the advantages of both heatnbond and loctite spray adhesive but neither of their negatives! I've done preliminary testing and results look great but I want to test them with more heavy use to be sure. I also purchased some 110 silk screen mesh which is great because the tulle i had on hand was a smaller gauge so the gaps were quite large. It worked to show the process visually and test my idea but if you want a more professional stencil I'd definitely order some 110 silk mesh. In a pinch, Silhouette has some silk screen refill kits I found at Michael's but it's way overpriced for the little amount you get (it has silk screen and HTV sheets in the kit bc it's geared towards a refill for their traditional screen printing on a frame kit) Much cheaper to buy mesh on Amazon, though! Silhouette also sells a a reusable, thick plastic, adhesive stencil material that I picked up for testing. Again way overpriced and I found a supplier online that sells it much cheaper (I'll link it in the review video bc I'm all about saving money!) Thank you again, and if you ever have any questions or need anything just reach out on FB ❤️ 😊
Awesome video! After a few fails, I finally got my Cricut knife setting and time of heat applied just right!! Thanks for a great video! Can you tell me what paints you suggest? I'm looking for affordable options
Just made my first stencil and of course instead of trying a small design first, I jumped right in and made one that was 9.5x9.5. First of, it seemed like the heat n bond had air bubles after pressing it on my Oracal 651. I did not re-do it because I wanted to see what would happen just using it the way it was. I cut my design, weeded it and pressed silk screen material on it. I guess I should have waited a few seconds for it to cool because I had glue residue on the unweeded part of my stencil. Mind you, my heatpress is 10x10 9 (non Cricut brand) and so I had to overlap the press. Next time I will try and press everything on my big t-shirt press. Maybe the overlapping caused the glue to bleed. I also see some "shadows" in some of my letters; not sure what the cause of this is. I also may have used too much pressure on my weeding tool tip when removing the vinyl because I pricked a few of the letters (still fairly new to the Cricut world). Because I have not applied to stencil on the shirt yet, I do not know if this is visible after adding the color. All in all, a very easy process now I just have to work out the kinks. Thanks for a great tutorial!! :)
Update** I did get some bleeding on my letters. I must have moved the heat 'n bond when I overlapped the press. Next time I'll do it on my tshirt heat press so I get an even pressure. Other than that it worked great. Had some color residue left on some of the silk, I used black screenball paint. Maybe use a little less pressure when screen printing?
OMG, I love your video. I just found you and I am so new to Cricut. I have a Maker and an Explore Air 2, but really am confused on sizing, and uploading images from anywhere to SVG. TYFS
I've been trying ND trying I'm thinking it has something to do with my settings. I'm using cameo 4 silhouette. If you know settings please lmk. I'm using oracle 651. Thank you Tammy
Thank you for this tutorial. I found it very helpful. I have a couple of questions. 1. Can I use a regular iron if I do not have a heat press? I realize I would not know what temperature it will be set at. 2. Is there a particular type of tulle that you use? Something fine? I do appreciate any help you can give me as I am brand new to this.
How do you store the stencils in between uses? Thank you. I watched 2 other videos on this prior to yours but just couldn't grasp this. You explained so it finally made sense.
I placed mine on onto the vinyl backing. Wax paper would work too. I did always let them fully dry out first. This video definitely needs a part two on using, washing, and storing. I had taken a little break from posting but that topic is definitely on my to do list!

It's to keep the stencil together so it can be reuseable. It depends on mesh count and ink if the lines will show up

Are you using parchment paper or wax paper? It seems the wax paper would melt. thank you for this very helpful tutorial
If they lose the stickiness, just spritz it with some spray adhesive (non permanent). I had been doing this with iron on and ironing it onto the silk screen I get on Amazon, but I think this way is better. I can’t wait to give it a try.
This is awesome - works like a charm! Any tricks for reducing the "texture" the tulle leaves on the paint?
In another comment someone said they used silkscreen 110 which didn’t leave texture.
Great idea❤
Great tutorial!!!! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to find out how to make these 💗
Thanks a million for this video!!!!
Thanks so much for your tutorial. I had all the parts but couldn't put it together. I made my first stencil and love the results. I would use a real heat press. With the cricut press it moves to much which puts the adhesive on the screen.
Thanks again !
How many times are these reusable by doing all this??
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!! Could you also share the name of the font you used for the word dreams in your sample? So pretty!
I have watched numerous videos and yours is by far the BEST and easiest. Can you use any kind of paint?
hello thank you so much for this tutorial, I am having problems with the heat n bond the glue is getting in the negative spaces of my stencil (on the silk mesh), what am I doing wrong? I'm using an iron. thank you
Saving this to watch again I'll also follow you great id3a
Awesome tutorial. What setting would I use for my Cricut air?
Can you make henna tattoo stencils thats adhesive to skin using this technique?
Brilliant! Thankyou for sharing
What do you use on back of stencil to store it.
Again way overpriced and I found a supplier online that sells it much cheaper (I'll link it in the review video bc I'm all about saving money!)
Thank you again, and if you ever have any questions or need anything just reach out on FB ❤️ 😊
Thank you
Tammy
Would parchment paper work better than wax paper for the ironing process?
It looks like that is what she was using just like the paper for the infusible ink
Can you do this without using the heat n' bond and can you use any kind of permanent vinyl?
That you you did it easy
Thank you thank you thank you
Is there a substitute for the chalk couture paste we can use on these stencils?
I love your tutorial! My 110 mesh came today so I'm getting ready to give this a try! I requested to join your FB group a couple weeks ago, because I want to keep up with your ideas. My request to join is still pending. I look forward to seeing what you have in future videos!
Hi where did you order your 110 mesh from ?
@@mariposam5559 sorry, just seen your message...I purchased from Amazon. Here's the link...
www.amazon.com/dp/B011KHGT88/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1jQ6Eb0QJBPJ7
Im novice. Whats the purpose of thw mesh ? Did she trim the mesh from inside the letters? Feel like i missed something within the gap in video.
@@flamingolover8642 the mesh is used for screenprinting.
So I just tried this and IT IS AMAZING!! But how do you get the transfer to stick again?
Thank you sooo much! Do you have (or would you create) written step-by-step directions? I would be interested in purchasing such if available.
I already planned to anyways so it's no problem at all! I'm working on a blog for those who prefer written content and photos over videos (I know i often do, myself) and this tutorial was already being converted into an article. The blog is still under construction and not live yet BUT I can put it in PDF form and comment when a link is added to the description. It'll be ready to go by tomorrow :)
Wow!! Thanks so much...again!!💙

You are amazing! I can’t wait to get the materials to do this-I’m so glad I “found” you-💙
Do you happen to know if the heat and time would be the same for a clamshell heat press? TIA
Hi just came across your channel. Can you use regular contact adhesive.? In Australia it's hard to get the vinyl you use. Or it's very expensive.
Is that wax paper or parchment paper? Looks like parchment?
Thank you so much for this!!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING !
Loved the tutorial. But being in Australia, we don't get the products easily, so what is the difference of the 631 to ordinary contact paper? And what should I look for if I wanted to purchase the 631 oracal. Is it the removable vinyl? Any links to where I can purchase the product please. TIA 🌞
I buy my Oracal vinyl on Amazon. It is considered "permanent" vinyl so I don't know if what you're referring to as contact paper would work.
Hey there! Would you be able to recreate this video in more depth and zoom into what you’re doing? Love the final product but having a hard time following the instruction.
Where do you get the mesh stencil material so that you can reuse it?
I always wanted mesh stencil. They are sooo reliable.. Which machine should buy?
Great idea! Thank you 😊
Hi, what mesh would you recommend? I’m definitely gonna try your tutorial!
So trying this! I’m sure I’ll have to watch this 100 times to get it right, lol.
But can you do it with an regular iron? I don’t have a heat press 😕 also have or do you know how large of one you can make?
I have a question about cutting out the stencil. Do you turn on the mirror on your circuit cutter?
Could I use an iron if I don't have a press?
Could you do this with HTV rather than heat and bond?
