Today I share my opinion with you on what the best budget film camera is for people just starting out. I know the video may seem like I'm insanely biased but I've owned both cameras for a while and on of them is easier to use than the other, not to mention the price! Let me know what you guys think, Canon AE-1p vs Minolta x-700? Do you guys wanna see anymore camera comparisons?

I was floored. $275 for an AE1, $300 for an A1, and $525 for an F1--in VG+ to EX+ condition. I absolutely agree with you 100%. In a former life, I was a photographer and camera sales person. In that role I felt it was my duty to know my cameras. I have sold many Minolta X-700 cameras based on their capabilities (as you outlined). The Minolta X-700 is an awesome camera and I wish I had never parted with mine. You provided a great review, I just wanted to agree with you.

    My first film camera was meant to be a Canon AE-1 but it arrived broken, and replaced it with a Minolta X-300 - basically an even cheaper X700 minus the program mode. Minolta gear is hugely underrated.
    In my opinion, the more manual the better - Canon FTb, Minolta SRT, or my current fave Nikon FM2. If you wanna stick with Canon, go with the FTb or the A-1. AE-1 prices are slowly reaching A-1 prices, and you get so much more with the latter!!

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  7 років тому +1

      EMMA I see what you're saying with the more manual the better. Talking photography learning about exposure and shutter speeds, aperture it's great to learn on an all manual film camera. But I guess having a program option would go against learning all that stuff! Thanks for the great insight Emma!

    With the canon I think if you set the aperture on the lens and program on the shutter speed dial it is essentially in aperture priority mode. Am I wrong, I don't own one but it was just my impression of how it worked! 😍 Cool vid, the Minolta looks great.

      The K 1000 is overhyped. Not a bad camera, but very limited and for a similar price, maybe even cheaper, you can score a Minolta SRT-101 or even better, the higher grade 102/super/303 Now you have an all metal camera, with a full information viewfinder, double exposure capability, mirror lock up function, self timer, lens step down button and better 2 cell metering system. All with the same ease of use and mechanical feel as the ultra basic K-1000.

    Also known as "Minolta XD" or "Minolta XD11" - released in the late 70s, at this time it was the Minolta Top Model with A & S Automatic
    Together with a 28mm f/2.8 & the great 50mm f/1.4 for 90 bucks. Great Deal - the Camera works perfect, perfect condition - the only bad thing: no film :D

    I owned the X700 and was issued one while I was an Army photographer. I used it to its utmosts capabilities as a photographer doing photojournalism work. Even though I used its Aperture priority and Program mode. More likely than not I shot it on manual. I used several lenses for it. 28mm 35-70 zoom 70 -210 zoom 135mm for portraits and t two 50 mm. One slightly faster than the other at f1.2, I also had both equipped with an auto wind. And an off camera flash bracket. I usually had either plus X 125 speed or fp4 in one camera and Tri-X or HP 5 in the other or a roll of color slide film Ektacrhome or kodakrome TMax was another choice at 100 400 or 3200.
    I would recommend it to anyone. I prefer manual focus cameras to autofocus. I found you really don’t need autofocus.
    The question is it good for a beginner? Depends. If you’re only going to get one camera. Perhaps. It does a great job and takes quality pictures. But it can be a lazy person’s camera or an what I call an idiot’s camera, because it as well as the AE1 can do all the work for you. You don’t know how to do photography in order to use it . Just put it on Program. And take pictures. I’m sure that’s what the regular journalists did when they went out to cover a story. If I or one of the other photographers didn’t go with them. You could see it in their work. That and their cameras would be on P when I got them back. For someone who really wants to learn photography. I would suggest a full manual camera with no automatic features. It forces you to learn how to use the camera. Also the full manual camera normally doesn’t need a battery to operate the camera. The AE1 and the X700 does need a battery to operate. Normal operation isn’t an issue. Just carry extra batteries on your camera bag. But cold weather can kill your batteries. Cold spares may not work either. I learned this the hard way. So I brought a Pentax K1000 with me as a back up camera. So I may have had three cameras with me on an assignment.
    If I could have at the time I would have gotten a Minolta Slt or similar camera for that purpose. I would get a cheap Minolta full manual camera then get the X700 after learning on the full manual, that way you can interchange the lenses.

    I would be very happy to add both the Minolta X-700 and Canon AE-1 Program to my camera collection. Both are lovely. Good alternatives in the Canon range with FD lens mount are the AV-1, which is aperture priority, and the T70, both of which can be found for pocket-money prices in near mint condition on eBay. The T70 looks ugly, but is a great camera. The more modest Canon FD lenses are fairly inexpensive and have good availability, but prices seem to be rising now in 2019. The range of affordable Minolta lenses seems more limited than Canon. Beware of lens fungus and stuck aperture blades when buying.

    With the canon AE-1, even though it’s shutter priority, you can get the aperture you want by inversely adjusting the shutter. So a high shutter will make the camera meter down to a low aperture number and a low shutter will make the camera meter for a high aperture number. But the best solution as stated is to have both aperture and shutter priority on the dial.

    Aperture priority is more useful generally. My first film SLR many years ago was an aperture priority Olympus OM10 (with manual adapter), later on an OM40. A good alternative to the Minolta X700 which I owned is the X500 or X570 as it called in some countries. It's also an aperture priority camera with full manual control.

      The XD5 is a great camera though! The only true feature the X700 has above the XD5 is Program Mode. How come you wanna replace that XD5? I’d look for a XD11 on ebay, unless you truly want Program Mode. The X700 is cool looking though, I like that sharp, shiny black 80s electronics look.

  • @SiriusXAim
    @SiriusXAim 5 років тому +1

    The X700 is a great camera, but it has one defect. When a flash is mounted, it automatically locks itself to 1/60 no matter what setting you use.
    This gets frustrating when you want to use a slower shutter speed.
    Later models don't have this issue, and it can be rectified with some tinkering or by using a non TTL flash. Minoltas are also more reliable, and offer a better viewfinder with shutter speeds displayed, as well as the absolutely remarkable Rokkor X glass.
    I'd say go Minolta. There's nothing that can go wrong with them.

    Ricoh KR-5. In the UK you can pick them up for £15 ($20) on ebay plus its a no frills basic beginners camera; so no priority mode. There is a light meter but you need to manually change your aperture and shutter speed to line up two needles and thereby you learn correct exposure. Another good cheap camera is the Yashika Minister for those who like rangefinders.

    Another good option would be the nikon FG: cheap as chips and it has A priority mode. Also, the canon A-1 with A, S and P modes is for some reason cheaper than the canon AE-1 P.

    I'm a new subscriber to your channel and I'm enjoying it very much. Thankyou. Perhaps other cheap beginner (or for those of us on a budget) cameras could include the Ricoh KR5 (fully manual - 1978) and KR10 (with aperture priority - 1980). Both are excellent choices and they even accept the huge selection of higher-end Pentax K bayonet mount lenses. My 'emergency back-up camera' (Lol) in my car is, even to this day, the very basic and simple to use KR5 which I've owned for nearly 40 (gentle use) years without any problems.

    Hey KingJvpes, I am relatively new to film photography and wanting to buy a camera. I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind helping me out, they may seem relatively simple.
    1. will 35mm film stock of any brand fit into any 35mm camera, or is it only specific film stock per camera?
    2. What do you make of the Canon AE-1 or the Pentax K1000 as beginner film cameras to learn using as a first timer?
    3. Does film stock come in Colour and B&W ? is that how you differentiate it ?
    4. What types of stores develop film for you these days? Will pharmacies develop your own film for you? and where do you develop yours when not at home ?
    Thank you in advance.

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  7 років тому +5

      BaneAlGhul Hey! So to answer your questions, any 35mm film will fit into any 35mm camera.
      As for the AE-1 or the k1000, I've never used the k1000 so I'd choose the ae-1.
      Yes there is color film and black and white film, that's how you differentiate them.
      As for developing you can try Walgreens or CVS if you have that around you. I know Walmart still develops too. But for the best results if you don't wanna do it yourself try to send it out to the darkroom lab. Just goodly "the darkroom lab" and you'll find them! $11 a roll!
      Any more questions feel free to ask!

    • @BaneAlGhul
      @BaneAlGhul 7 років тому +2

      That's great man, thanks for the speedy reply. I'm just beginning into film photography at the moment. I have a few other basic questions on my mind too if you don't mind helping me then ill be out of your hair.
      1. What ISO film rate do you preferably shoot at in daytime lighting, would 400ISO be the most suitable for the best result ?
      2. How do you know when buying lenses will they fit your camera or are they all relatively universal ?
      3. Where is the best place online to buy a good quality camera eg.canon ae-1.. & Can you buy any of them new considering they've been around for a quite a few decades ?
      Thanks again KingJvpes.. and P.S. keep up the good work!

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  7 років тому +2

      BaneAlGhul no problem!
      1.) you can use 400 speed as it's probably the most versatile but you can also shoot slower speed film like ISO 200 or 100
      2.) the camera will have a lense mount. Tha canon ae-1 had an fd lens mount for example. These lenses will only fit on FD mount compatible cameras!
      3.) if you can find them new you have to be super lucky hah they are usually gonna be used. Check eBay! Or even craigslist!

    I am rocking my dad‘s old AE-1P. It is the only camera I ever wanted as a youngster. A while ago he gave me that brown nylon photo bag that was totally off limits back then and said „It‘s still a good camera but it’s only gathering dust at my house. You take it.“
    Apart from shutter squeak which was easily fixed, the camera was still good as new. The first roll I put through after maybe 20 years felt amazing. The pictures themselves were nothing to write home about, but I well and truly enjoyed shooting my dad’s camera.
    And when I shot portraits of my parents with that same camera that had been in the family since before I was born - it felt like something had come full circle.

    Thank's for the vid. I picked up an x-700 a few months ago for dirt cheap at a thrift shop and have been playing around with it and really like it. I actually just picked up an AE-1 for the first time today at the same thrift shop for $12 and it seems to be in perfect condition. Looking forward to testing it out and seeing the difference for myself. I think I might have some issue with that shutter priority after getting used to the aperture priority in the x-700. But i wonder what's the difference between the ae-1 (which is the one I got) and the ae-1 program?

    Pentax ME is still the best beginners camera and always will be, the Pentax glass was the best by a country mile. Then I would say the entire Olympus OM range, brilliant build amazing glass and a great size to carry round, the OM1 and OM2 are still classic cameras much sought after. Then there are the Konica cameras such as the Autoreflex. The main problem is we can't guarantee any quality or know how much the the shutter speeds will be out, especially if someone who has only been around cameras for 2 minutes has tried giving them a clean or worse still altered the shutter speeds. So if I was advising someone who was buying their first SLR I'd advise them to go with the system they know, so if it's Canon go with the EOS system and Nikon can be any camera since 1959. For those who use a mirrorless system go with Olympus as I believe their lenses work the best with adapters. That way if they don't like film, or there is a fault with the camera it would cost them £20 tops. I would also advise them to avoid eBay as most cameras on there have a dubious history and I would go with a site such as collectablecameras.com they are usually cheaper and the cameras carry a guarantee.

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  7 років тому

      Mark Harris That's really valuable information! I myself hve t tried out collectible cameras but I'll go take a look. Also would you recommend the Pentax spotmatic? My copy feels solid but a couple of others have been faulty. My meter doesn't work but that's not an issue. Like you're ere saying Pentax glass was best and so I picked up a 50mm 1.4. But for some reason it us a yellowish tint to it. Any info on that mark?

    • @markharris5771
      @markharris5771 7 років тому

      KingJvpes Any basic SLR is ok as long as it's working, I think the Spotmatic can be a bit overpriced though for someone to dip their toes in the water. I know the OM1 isn't cheap but it is easy to sell on and the glass is good for mirrorless cameras. Leave your lens on a windowsill in the sun, it's something they used to use to coat the lens with and the UV rays gets rid of it. It's a really common problem with FSU lenses and a bit of an old fashioned fix.

    I really like the grainy effect from the canon

    • @moimacart
      @moimacart 4 роки тому

      Since that film cameras are not using a sensor to capture the image, that would have more to do with the film, the precision of the exposure, the film or image processing than the camera itself. My guess in this case would be the exposure and maybe also the image processing. The grainy effect is mostly in the dark areas of the image, indicating that someone might have tried to make them lighter. If it was the film, the grainy effect would be equal everywhere.
