    This is one of my favourite cameras. I love the simplicity of it. It’s pure photography. No menus, no settings to worry about. Just shutter speed, ISO and aperture. Back to basics. That’s all you need to be a photographer.

      I’m not sure about a film resurgence. There is still some interest in it & now it is more visible via social media. I purchased this camera new in late 1983 I believe. It came with the 50-f1.8 lens & also purchased the Canon 70-210f4 lens with it. I still own it & recently replaced the battery. Everything works but the beeper when the battery tester button is used. The beeper still works when the self timer is used. I have 2 rolls of unused Kodak Gold 200 in the fridge that is probably pushing 17 yrs old. Maybe one of these days.

    I’m truly very grateful for this video. I’m new to film photography (very much an amateur/beginner) so thank you so much for explaining everything in such a comprehensive way for the people that might not know every specific term (aka myself) and for also explaining what that term actually means. I’ve watched many videos to better comprehend SLRs and specifically the Canon AE-1 P and you are honestly the best. Again thank you❤️

    I have been shooting seriously since the 80's... I never stopped shooting film.... when digital first started to happen I knew pro Photographers who just went into retirement or changed careers rather than switch to digital.... it was really a big deal for some people to make that kind of change... but because I had just gotten into Photography... I was like, as long as somebody keeps making film.... why not do both... so, I did, and I do... most of my film career I used Pentax and Olympus cameras... and now I use Panasonic and OM in M4/3... and the same Pentax MX's I used and rebought from back in the day for film. I just acquired an AE 1 Program.... a very cool and informative video, thanks for what you do. I'm subscribed now.

    In minute 11 you say you have to press that little button next to the lens when turning the aperture to A… to put it into automatic… is that so??? I thought just setting the A on the lens and the Programm on the shutterspeed dial would be enough.

    The depth-of-field preview button is for previewing your depth of field, not to show you how much light is getting through the lens or what your picture is going to look like. The frame naturally darkens when you press it (if the lens is stopped down to any degree), but you're supposed to ignore that unavoidable effect and simply notice how the depth of field looks.

      @@derekr7814 Seems like most of the videos out there for the AE_1 program are not covering the exposure modes and lock button very well, it can be confusing. the lower button when pressed will activate the display inside the viewfinder you will see the aperture the camera will use. You will not see the exposure setting, however, the display will blink if there is either not enough or too much light to properly expose the scene( you can also see the display by pressing the shutter button halfway down). The upper button locks in the auto setting to to whatever setting is required for the composition you see in the viewfinder when you press it. If you recompose the scene, while holding the button you will maintain those exposure settings from the previous scene. that can be helpful in certain lighting situations. Just setting the lens to A and the shutter dial to Auto is sufficient to get autoexposure. You can also get shutter priority mode by setting the lens to A and turning the shutter dial to the shutter speed you prefer. Hope this helps someone.

      Congrats on your new camera and thanks for checking out the video! Which dial isn't working for you? Is it the shutter speed or the film speed (iso)?
      F Stop or Focal Stop refers to the aperture number that your on! Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO all work together to give you the proper exposure. Every time you change one you change it a "stop". F Stop means that you're adjusting the exposure by changing the aperture which also will adjust the depth of field for your image!

    Just picked one up at random. Has a dead battery. I assume you need a good battery in it in order to advance the film? My lever only moves about half distance, and I want to blame the battery rather than admit I got a broken camera. Help?

      Hi Mike,
      This camera does need a good battery in order to fire the shutter and advance the film. You can press the black battery check button next to the film rewind crank to see if it's dead or not. If it beeps less than 6 times in a second it needs to be replaced. Hopefully it's just the battery and you're able to get out shooting soon! If you have any other issues with it feel free to DM me on instagram and I'll do my best to help you out!

I have more control over the effects not only while taking pictures but you can do even more once you have the film in the dark room. I got my first taste for film photography in high school useing black and white film I loved the results I got . He depth and clarity were amazing nothing like digital..

      Congrats on your new camera! Portra 400 is a really good all purpose film. You can shoot indoors but just watch out for the lighting conditions you’re in. Only being 400iso it may be to dark to get a sharp image or it may mess with the colour since it’s daylight balanced.

I watched this video and that little slide button next to the lens that makes u see the shutter, it doesn’t do anything when i slide. I don’t see the shutter thing close. Is that just because i don’t have a roll in it yet or anything else? Or is it a bad sign?

      Hi Indy,
      Thanks for checking out the video! Hope you found it helpful. Try taking your lens off and putting it back on again. then set your aperture to f/22 and press the depth of field preview. You should see the aperture blades close down all the way in the lens. If you still don't see anything happen in the lens there may be an issue with the coupling between your lens and camera body. Feel free to message me on instagram if it still isn't working or if you have other questions and I will try to help you out further!

      Hi Julia,
      Try pulling up on the rewind knob all the way and then pulling the left hand side of the door open. Sometimes the old light seals can "glue" the door shut. If that's the case they will definitely need to be replaced before use.

    Great video ! I just got the ae-1p . How do you know if your over or under exposed in Manuel mode ?I noticed it just tells you an f stop to put . But what if I want to shoot wide open , I would just adjust the shutter speed ?

    • @BrandynSteeleProductions
      @BrandynSteeleProductions  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Michael! So excited to hear about your new camera!! And that's a great question! But you're exactly right! The exposure meter on the ae-1p shows the f stop to correctly expose the frame based on your shutter speed. If you want to shoot wide open but it's tell you for example to shoot f5.6 just increase your shutter speed until the meter shows the desired f stop! You can always use an external light meter just to double check if needed! Hope this helps!!

    What’s up Brandyn ! I have another question. I was messing with the dof button today and I already knew that it you can see the dof from the lens . But when I looked into the viewfinder and seen it’s telling me to go up a stop with the aperture and the screen gets slightly darker . I was reading that you can actually see a little preview on how the pic is going to come out when hitting the dof button and looking through the viewfinder . I’m confused idk lol . Are you familiar with that ?

    • @BrandynSteeleProductions
      @BrandynSteeleProductions  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Michael! Great question!!
      The DOF preview is an awesome tool for judging focus range and exposure. It's important to make sure that you do have it turned off before trying to meter any scene. If you try to expose your image with the DOF on it will over expose your shot because it thinks there is less light than is actually there. When metering your shot always make sure you meter with the lens wide open to ensure correct exposure value, then use the DOF preview to check focus range exposure preview!
      Hope this helps, feel free to ask me any further questions!! Happy shooting!!

    • @ElMikey225th
      @ElMikey225th 4 роки тому

      Now it makes sense on why it’s telling me to go to an higher aperture. So before I use the dof button I should be on 1.8 since that’s the widest my lens go and then change it to whatever aperture I would like a preview of ? I’m still a little confused on the last part you told me . Thanks man !

    • @BrandynSteeleProductions
      @BrandynSteeleProductions  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, when framing and metering your shot make sure your DOF preview is turned off. This should keep the lens wide open and allow you to still change the aperture to set the exposure meter. Then once you turn on the DOF it will actually close the aperture down allowing you to preview everything
