Best film camera of all time. Bought my A-1 new in 1979 and am about to gift it to a friend's son who is heavily into vintage cameras. He is about 30 years of age and will give it a new lease of life. To give him the best experience possible, I have repackaged the camera body, lenses and case in their original boxes. Hopefully he will get the same unboxing experience that I had as a young man 40 years ago.

Story time: I thought I bought an AE-1 off Ebay, saw your first video about the A1, felt salty...
And then I get my package and an A1 pops out. Look at God.

I looove this camera. Got one last year, because I wanted to start over with film photography again and instantly fell in love with this beautiful piece of technology.
About the noise from the mirror dampening mechanism: I had that symptom, when I got her. Just one little drop of oil that does not hurt plastic gears (don't use WD40 or something like that. It will corrode them away over time) injected with a needle and it ran like a charm again. There are several videos here on youtube explaining how to find the right spot for injection by unmounting the lower part of the body.

My parents bought me a new A-1 for high school graduation in 1978. Seeing how I had no interest in photography then, I put it in a drawer for roughly 10 years (believe it or not). Somehow I developed the film bug circa 1988, and rediscovered that brand-new beauty, as a gift from heaven. I'm now an independent documentary filmmaker, using that gem (along with my smart phone) for still shots; as a matter of fact, I'm looking up at it on my top shelf right now. I used to use a gorgeous film stock called Velvia, but have transferred to Kodak Portra 400. I adore seeing a new generation becoming enamored with film photography in general, and this film camera in particular. Thanks for this fine review my man!

My A-1 is a tank that has lasted me since 96' in hs photography class to now. I was lucky enough to pick up some additional A-1 & other Canon A-series 35mm SLR film bodies. But the A-1 was the first when I decided to move on from the standard issued Pentax K-1000 body at school to a body I could call my own. Little did I know that it would teach me so much about the art. I am the artist, the camera(plus FD mount lenses & live stock films) is my brush and the world is the canvas.

Got one of these with the intention of having it as a backup to my F1 camera back in the 90's but never got to use it. I remember I just fired a couple of test shoots with it but funny thing is I never actually took a single roll with it, not even one photo. Ever! That was before it ended up sitting somewhere in my storage in original wrap and box intact!... One of these days I'll find it.

One of the good things in my eyes is the Programm mode, even if I don't use it, you can put it in p and lock the wheel and give it to a person who doesn't know much about photography and they can take pictures with it, that was not the case with my AE1 for example.

  • @NextScamdemic

Hey, thanks to your videos I just picked up an A1 today 😁 Came with the 50mm 1.8... $95
It's kinda worn condition but it's got a huge grip with an extra shutter button (not sure the point of it), and it has a Date/Year stamp on the back.. have you ever seen one with that? The extra features makes it really heavy!
Edit: Ooh I'm not sure but it might be a speed-winder 😲
Edit: I figured it out now: the extra shutter mount is the Canon Motor Drive - continuous shooting up to (I believe) 5 frames per second!
And the feature on the back cover is the optional Data Back! You can set a Year/date stamp (as long as it's a year between 1978 and 1988😆)

A lot of those classic cameras are things of beauty, like this one. They're just a joy to hold in your hand and fiddle with, and fire the shutter with no film loaded, etc. - things you can't do with a lot DSLRS, which also don't have that precision-engineered look and feel. Of course today's cameras are every bit as good and as well engineered, but they just don't feel like it as much. And to have that kind of precision in an all-analog, mostly-mechanical camera was an achievement indeed.

The A-1 is actually digitally controlled by a computer, first film camera of its time, I believe, to use a computer.

  • @Avividlife

Damn I've had my A1 for about 2 years now & I never knew about that double exposure feature. I just held the rewind button on the bottom and shoot that way lol. Also a warning: there was a manufacturing flaw that the A1 would use battery power, even on Lock. Mine would do that + freeze up and not "turn on" I fixed this by periodically taking the battery out for extended periods of time. But I still love it & this makes me want to shoot on it haha thank you🙌

I ran into this camera for $40 today. Had some brassing on the edges and no where near as clean as yours, but it came with the 50mm/1.8. It feels so advanced versus my Pentax K1000 that I learned photography on. Such a steal and this review was really entertaining. Looks like I got a steal!

This was my first SLR camera which I purchased way back in 1978. I went ahead and bought the Canon 28mm and 100-200mm lenses for it. It was a great camera and advanced camera at the time especially with the digital red LED read out that you will see inside the view finder which no other camera had at the time. I sold the camera and lenses after 5 years of use and never went back into photography until the digital camera came about. Today after holding an A-1 after all these years it felt kinda small in my hands compared to my Canon 5D Mk IV and of course better lenses like the Canon 24-70mm F 2.8, 70-200mm F 2.8 and Sigma 50mm F 1.4 Art lens which I use in high school sports photography. If your new into 35mm film photography this is the best camera to purchase. You won't regret it. Unless your a Nikon fan.

While I've enjoyed shooting with my A-1, I still prefer the F1N because of the ergonomics. I think the A-1 is a bit odd to use compared to the F1N. But for the money, I'd shoot A-1 any day of the week! It's definitely better (for me) than the AE-1 or the AE-1 Program. Great review!

While looking for my 1st SLR I was seeking an ae-1. Accidentally I found a-1 for a bargain price on Craigslist with a case, 2 lenses, light meter, flash and full paperwork - og warranty, manual for both camera and lenses, and many more. The thing was the seller inhireted it from a relative and knew absolutely nothing about the camera, couldn't even turn it on. I bought it in a heartbeat with a risk it might not work. I am sure this camera meant a lot to the OG owner, because now I have a mint condition, fully working A-1 that needed just a battery replacement. It's gonna stay with me as long as I'm into photography 😍

I do really like the Canon A1 and enjoy using it, although I would not say it is perfect by any means. The tiny ISO button is very fiddly and poorly designed, as is the on/off and self timer switch. Honestly I think the Minolta X-500 etc is a better camera. (Goes and takes cover) lol

I got mine last year with 3 lenses for $100 on eBay and have been very lucky thrifting and trading to now have 8 lenses including the 55 and the 85. All for under $500 I do portraits and everything with it. It’s also amazing to have so many lenses because I bought an adapter for my canon t6 so I can use my lenses on my digital. I started with a canon ae 1 and the upgrade was the best decision I’ve ever made. If you guys are having trouble affording the body or lenses I would recommend going to thrift stores or church sales that have cameras for cheap and then selling them to camera stores for credit. I got some prime lenses that way. Just some friendly tips!☺️☺️

I love just about everything on this camera with the exception of the horribly dim LED display inside the viewfinder. It would actually be fine if it was yellow or green so it displayed more clearly but in a brightly lit scene, I cannot see the information at all because it's dim red and it gets washed out by the bright light. I have a similar problem with the AE-1 Program as well because that also displays the aperture values on the right in red. Honestly, I reach for my regular old AE-1 if I know I will be shooting in bright conditions because I can clearly see the black needle set against whatever I'm photographing. Also, I would absolutely recommend getting the 50/1.4 over the 1.8. There is a noticeable difference in sharpness and contrast. I tested this on my Fujifilm X-T3 and the difference was stark. The 1.4 is way better than the 1.8. and definitely worth the extra coin

At about 02:25, you read something from the 'net that told you production started in 1978. Wrong. I got mine, in Japan, in 1975. Still have the receipt even. The motor drive is awesome. Loud and heavy (12 AA batteries) and I believe 4fps. The heft turns the A-1 from a competent camera into a monster. Add a 70-210 zoom and you'll never hold any other camera with as much respect as this one deserves.

Extremely good image quality, like prime lenses. Full sharpness and contrast even at open aperture, at 35mm and as well at 70mm !

It doesn't have TTL flash, like contemporary 35mm film cameras such as Olympus OM2n, OM40, Minolta X500/700, or Pentax Super A, or Nikons such as FG or FE2. I still have an OM2n, Super A and FG, all mint, and many other cameras in my collection. If you want to be able to set aperture for depth of field, rather than a few presets on the flashgun, it wasn't the camera for me at the time. Here in 2019, I use my Nikon D800 full frame DSLR.

It's the Pro version of the AE1 it didn't get much traction at the time because Nikon was/is the pro choice ... I have one but I definitely prefer my older all manual Olympus OM-2.

just a hint for A1 users, always lock your camera (L mode) and turn off viewfinder display when not used to conserve battery life.

@@Rewind-w2q there's a switch around battery check button with white dot indicator, look for "Viewfinder Display Lever" here: support.usa.canon.com/library/attachments/ServiceWareImages/LDImages/SolutionAnswer/Film%20A%20Series/A1/nomenclature%201.jpg

Nice to see a video strongly recommending something besides a ae-1 or k1000. I like both camera's, but there weren't the only good SLR's ever made.

I love the A1, I got one for 85 bucks with an 50mm 1:1,4, a Tokina Zoom and the fast shutter batterie grip. I‘m really happy, but the om2 and the x700 are favorits as well. 😁🙃😉

I purchased a Canon A-1 in 1980 new for $ 679.00. And, at that time, it was a big chunk of money by today's standards. I think if you take inflation into account the equivalent would be roughly $1,600.00. I would, at that point in time, consider the A-1 to be the flag ship of 35mm cameras along with the Nikon F2 and F3. Certainly the most technologically advanced at the time. I still own one and it's my third favorite camera. Third to my Hasselblad 500 cm and Pentax K1000. I would respectfully disagree though as the ideal beginners camera. I still feel the Pentax K1000 holds that place in line. Being totally manual it teaches the most basic and fundemental concepts of photograpy. What better way to learn such concepts as depth of field, motion control and so much more. It's too easy to place the A-1 on auto when you get frustrated and start to rely on technology rather than experience. But I would certainly agree it would be the next step up.

The Canon A 1 is the most underrated camera in the Canon lineup bar none! It does everything the AE 1 program does and so much more! It has aperture priority, shutter priority as well as full program mode! It also has available a 5 FPS motor drive AE!!! There was even a 250 exposure back offered. If that doesn’t get your juices flowing, YOU’RE DEAD!

Working Canon A-1 w/ Canon FD 50mm f1.4, Canon FD 28mm f2.8, Canon FD 80-200mm f4, and Canon Power Winder A, all good working condition, + random things like filters, extension tubes, and a tele-converter (most Vivitar or other branded). $100 is more than a fair price right?

While I'm a lifelong Nikon user, back in the early 1980's I recommended and bought an A-1 for a friend who had no prior experience with photography but was heading into wilds of Alaska and wanted to try. The AE-1 would have worked, but was not durable enough to risk on a move to Barrow for 4 years. The camera made him look like a star. It's a great film camera with a wealth of FD lenses out there for cheap. Nikon's counterpart is the FA, which proved to be nowhere near as durable as the A-1. Because of the A-1's rather high new price, fewer were sold and It's not as easy to find a clean one as for an AE-1.

  • @NephilimFree

The A-1 has 6 exposure modes, not 4. I used one for many years. It was one of the finest film cameras ever made.
    Aperture Priority
    Shutter Priority
    Automatic Flash
    Manual
    Stopped-down metering exposure mode
    Programmed (fully auto)

    • @NephilimFree
      @NephilimFree 4 роки тому

@Kevin Chen Stopped-Down Exposure Control means there is a manual lock mechanism on the camera which allows you to physically close down the iris diaphram to the aperture you have already set on the lens. With the iris diaphram "stopped-down" (closed down), the camera will make light meter measurements and will also employ automatic exposure once you press the shutter button. The camera will make automatic exposure (if you so wish) by varying the shutter speed according to the aperture setting. The purpose of this mode is so that you can preview depth-of-field in real time and make adjustments as desired by varying the aperture setting, which allows you to know what the depth-of-field will look like prior to exposure. The disadvantage is that what you see through the lens is darkened depending upon what aperture you have set.

  • @princepolitely7559
    @princepolitely7559 4 роки тому

if you use aperture priority. you just choose a aperture and the camera will decide what shutter speed right? is that a accurate? i was planning to do that in my trip on beach for less hassle. please respond 🤔

Hi, I love your videos! I’m a high school student that’s really into photography, and I just wanted to know if you’ve ever consider the brand Contax? I would really like to see a video about the RTS or the Aria. I know they’re a little more expensive than most brands but if you could get your hands on one I’d appreciate that! Thank you!

I personally using Fujica AX5, which was a direct competitor to AE-1 Canon back in the days. Fujica AX5 really teached me a lot, it’s awesome camera. I mainly shoot portrait and sexy portrait(boudoir) and a bit of porn (1 subject). What is more interesting with Fujica AX5 compared to AE-1 Canon is that it’s much smaller format, standard lens is usually 50mm f/1.6 which is a very fast lens for low light photography. Main con of Fujica AX5 is small window at the back door which produce light leaks. Just tape the whole back door and the window with black tape !

Hey! Love your videos. Just getting into film and I picked up a Minolta SRT101. I notice some dust specks in the viewfinder. I looked at the mirrors and theres some "fogginess" around the edges as well but no dirt. The fogginess looks like dried out oil since its around 50+ years old. As for the specks, I would assume its above the mirrors in some nooks and crannies. None of this matters, correct? As the mirror "jumps" out of the way for the exposure.. Just want to make sure before I start my first roll of film. Thank you for your input!

How long are the battery’s supposed to last on the Canon A-1s. I’m wondering cause I’ve already replace the battery twice in about two months of owning it. I was wondering if it was because I need to put it on L every time i finish using it or if there’s something wrong with my camera.
