I purchased the Onkyo TX-NR686 after coming from using both Denon, Sony, and Yamaha in the past. I have to say that the Onkyo crushes all of them sound quality wise, also has the best user interface. I’ve never purchased an AVR that was as inexpensive as it was $399.99, I thought I would have to return it and get something else but it has blown me away completely. I’d highly recommend it!

Good video man. I had an Onkyo 676 for about a little over a month, then saw a Pioneer lx303 for $499 and was excited to purchase. Not 3 days in and I already have buyer's remorse, so I saw that BB had the 787 for $549 (not bad), but Amazon has it for $450! After this video, I am convinced to go back to Onkyo...now with the THX model. Thanks man.

I also ditched Denon for Onkyo for some time now. The Onk sounds like it’s got more ump and also more 3-dimensional. I think it’s got to do with their high-current amp design. Happy I’ve made the switch.

I agree with you, I gifted my brother a Onkyo 686 I got from Black Friday since the Denon 1909 I gave him had a blown HDMI MONITOR OUT. I went to set it up today and was surprised how warm it sounds compared to my $1,400 Denon 4300H. Sure my Denon has Audyssey X32 and the Audyssey app for custom curves.Although, when I had the 1909 I only had to turn up the volume on the receiver to barely halfway. On my 4300H, not only does it run extremely warm I have to turn up the volume past half using the same set of speakers and same impedance. In regards to sound quality, the Onkyo sounds FULL and warm. The Denon sounds brittle, anemic, and overly bright (4khz range). I'll be selling my Denon and getting a RZ series Onkyo

Great review, thank you! This was perfect for me as I had an Onkyo 808 since 2011 and loved it until I got the dreaded no sound/no relay click. Did a bunch of research and decided to go with another Onkyo... the TX-NR696 for $500 at BB. I have a 5.2 surround with Bose Acoustimass 10 speakers, you know, the dual cubes... and I added an additional sub. Love these speakers BTW, but you will have to add an additional sub. Anyway just out of curiosity I asked the salesman at BB if he would recommend anything else in the $500 range and he showed me the Denon 2600 normally $800 on sale for $550. In the end I bought the Onkyo. 11:05 This is why I made the decision to stick with the Onkyo. I love the bright sound it produces. We talked about longevity, build quality, etc... but for me its the sound. 11:35 That is exactly what I was afraid of so I'm glad you confirmed it. I have read that in other reviews, so I think I made the right choice. Going to wire up the Onkyo 696 now. If I don't like it I will edit this comment. If not you can just assume its awesome! Thanks again.

Love my ONKYO TX-NR686 but still had heating issues like all Onkyos so I installed a usb 5v cooling fan, problem solved unlike Yamahas which don't have overheating issues...still I'd pick Onkyo for that mesmerizing sound output most receivers cannot match!

The TX-NR787 is the easiest way to get 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 Atmos/DTS:X home theater without spending a fortune (Denon AVR-X4500H and Yamaha RX-A2080 both are $1,600)

It's true,Onkyo may have all the Amenities. that's why people buy there receivers for there Home theater system.. But for people that rather have sound quality for music or Home theater system.Thats why buyers choose Marantz or Denon over Onkyo.

    • @nevergone3424

I disagree as a Denon owner since the 1909 days. Sound quality has diminished since then. My 1909 was a great receiver despite not have the full blown Audyssey X32. My current receiver which is a 4300H, sounds anemic and bright and does not compare to my 1909. It's embarrassing how much a $250 Onkyo receiver can trump a $1400 Denon receiver in regards to sound quality. Not even going to mention how broken the HEOS app is. After 2 years , we still can't mass delete the playlist queue in HEOS.

@@nevergone3424 you know when I wrote that comment my receiver that I had was awesome it was Denon AVR X 1200 w.the only thing I had issues with the Bluetooth. that receiver sounded phenomenal. I don't care what brand receiver you buy .there all going have some flaws to them. So I know Yahama have good reputation for sound quality so I bought the Yahama RX 685 sounds really nice a warm nice balance sound the Yapoa calibration sounds nice but I had to turn it up to 40db to here it . but I was not convinced on it then I tried the Parametric EQ on Yamaha were set up for more dynamic sound clarity base I was so pleased the sound was amazing every setting that I used sounded amazing.that fix the issues it was definitely louder than my Denon AVR 1200 . The function runs smoothly streaming was accurate and blue tooth on it enable fast. I had my heart set on Denon AVR X 2500 h so I bought that comparison. Finally I set the Denon and let me tell you your absolutely right the Denon seamed cheaper made quality on the outside. so finally I had the setting done I was not happy with it volume jump when I turned on the unit I found it's Denon thing .the volume on Bluetooth hesitated like a huge delay on volume. So receiver sound like shit I send that peace of shit back witch I'm glad I didn't listen to crutchfeild I bought through Amazon . Yamaha receivers are the way to go.

Nice Review, however you only compared subjective surround sound performance, which also has a lot to do with speaker matching. A bright AVR like Onkyo with mellow speakers will give you brighter sound without becoming too bright. Bright speakers + Onkyo will be too much of a good thing and may sound very good for a little while but will give you listening fatigue fairly quickly.
Bright speakers with the Denon will also be a good match. Stereo performance wise for the ones interested in that they may be around the same level... The difference in temperature can be easily explained : Onkyo is class D where the Denon is class AB amplification so class D will ALWAYS run cooler ( onkyo). The issue I have with the AB's of Denon and Marantz is that they HAVE built in fans, but it seems almost impossible to get them to turn on and actually cool the unit. I guess they only turn on when the Unit is close to failure/fire hazard, whereas with the Onkyo they turn on much sooner. Heat is the no1 Enemy of electronics so I think Onkyo did a great job. By the way, I think the comparison between these two units is a bit skewed; the 787 is a class above the 2400. for a fair comparison you should have compared the 787 to the 3400.
