Sorry I didn't read this and put a link in one of my replies. It's gone but I just thought I'd apologize for not reading this before posting that. Have a good New Year if there isn't another upload between now and the 1st!
Yes, my two favourites topped the list. I would have bitched about Yamaha not being on the list if I didn’t totally agree with your reasons for not including them. Plus those 2002 menus need to go!!
I've had 5 receivers since 2000 for home theater. Dislike: onkyo back in 2000-2010 (has 5.1) runs hot which killed the HDMI output. Like: Denon 1912 (has 5.1) since 2010 runs warm Love: Denon AVR-X3700H (5. 2 independent sub outputs .4 atmos; Has atmos dts:x Imax dts:Neo6) and Denon AVR-S760H (5. 2 identical sub outputs .2 atmos; Has atmos dts:x) since 2021 runs warm. I love streaming Spotify from my iPhone to Denon HEOS receivers and the 7 Denon HEOS
Glad to see Pioneer getting back in the game. While I have been (and still am) a huge Onkyo receiver fan, I still have my Pioneer Elite M-91 amp from the 80s rocking. Thanks to this wonderful community for a great year. Hope you all stay healthy and warm. Special thanks to Kristi and Andrew for all their hard work. Have a very safe and happy new year. I'm hoping to grab some La Scalas in the spring. :)
I was fortunate to be able to get an Anthem MRX1140. I love it. Once dialed in, I feel that the marantz/denon/Yamaha flagships just can’t compete. It’s truly tragic that anthem doesn’t give you guys the respect you deserve and opportunity to review their products. They’re stuck in the past when it comes to their marketing tactics.
Was able to experience it through a local distributor (with Paradigm speakers) and was blown away. Got the 1140 at a little more than the 740 because Anthem ran out of stock on the 740 (score!). Can't wait to officially unbox as I complete my home theater.
I just picked up the onkyo tx-nr5100 and its amazing. I upgraded from a cheap $350 yamaha AVR that only supported 4K 60hz and 5.1 channel. It had no wifi, no dolby atmos, no ALLM, no VRR, no dolby vision, and couldn't support 4k 120hz. So for me this new onkyo is so amazing as it has all those features at only $499. One thing to note, if ARC isnt working for you, make sure you update the firmware of the AVR. It didnt work for me until I did that, now its perfect.
We recently purchased the Pioneer given your review. The system is paired with 7 MK speakers plus MK sub serving a pretty large room 23' x 36'. After setup (Dirac), I can say we are totally satisfied with the listening experience.
I had a Yamaha TSR 700 (rx v6a) I returned it for the Onkyo TX NR 6050 (pretty much the 6100). Totally agree with the points about Yamaha. It sounded great but didn't have the features I needed. Onkyo came through with the Costco model. I also tried the Denon AVR-S760H. It had bad performance with music streaming. Buy the TX NR 6050, it's the best receiver if your budget is $600 or less. It works with 8k/60 4k/120 RGB HDR10 on both consoles, the streaming software is great, and it sounds good with my turntable. The menus are also nice to look at. Oh and bonus, it has 100ms adjustment slower and faster for audio sync if you have eArc issues. Perfect match for an LG CX or C1, a console, and a turntable.
Thanks for all your reviews this year! I pre ordered an rz50 5 months ago and never received anything but a "sorry we don't know when we will get it". I ended up finding an in stock integra 5.4 and snapped it up. Its worth a couple hundered bucks just to actually have it in the grand scheme of things. So far its been excellent and sounds amazing, a lot of people are gonna love the rz50 when they can finally, at some point, get their hands on them. Dirac is hands down no question vastly better than any other built in room correction I've seen.
My Denon 6700 isn't on this list, though it wasn't reviewed. However, the 3700 is on the list. So I guess that's a kind of a vote for the 6700. The Onkyo RZ 50 is enticing, but for some reason, I like the idea of having the option to do 9.1.4 or 7.1.6, thus my love for the 6700. One question, shouldn't speaker impedance and receiver matching be described as difficulty "keeping up with" as opposed to driving? 4 ohms has less resistance than 8 ohms so it more or less "pulls" more power than 8 ohms. I like to think of it as a person walking 2 dogs vs 4 dogs. Lastly, as I said many times in my post, I watch every video you guys release. Often, when I watch these videos, I mention to my wife how much I like the kid blowing the bubble artwork you guys have on your wall. Well, yesterday, under the tree, I found my own copy. I had no idea she was paying attention. She could care less about my hobby. If hadn't been for this channel, I would have never known that artwork existed. Thanks.
Have the same. X6700H (with the Japanese update to 2.1) Great unit. That 3700h has a bit more clean power.. less channels in the chassis. ..case of more Options at the cost of cleaner power.... My take, we are talking about a basic home theater system .. Not a set of D'Agostino MonoBlocks pushing Aidas... Get the 13 speaker options. The value is plenty for Quantity over Quality. 🙏🙏🙏.. Happy New Year !
I just got my Anthem MRX1140 dialed in, Arc Genesis room correction/calibration is so great. It sounds so incredible I wouldn't trade it for anything. Also the combination of it with my Forte iv's and dual SVS SB 3000's is the perfect setup for me for music, movies and my daughters gaming.
@@KristiWright Thank you both!! It definitely will, it's everything and more to me! I hope you both can get your hands on one. Best wishes too you both in the new year
Love my MRX 510, and can't wait to upgrade to a 540 or 740 down the road. Btw, I've left comments on FB bugging Anthem to send you guys review models. They said they would look into it. Fingers crossed 2022 gets you guys an Anthem receiver, finally!
Mrx740, dual sb3000s, heresy ivs are filling my living room kitchen and overhead balcony. Class AB main amplification plus class D backup with flexible assignability and an awesome web interface. Great to see a lot of Anthem representation in the comments here, very pleased with my trade up from marantz
Had to check out Andrew's review of the RX-V6A, since I purchased one of the earliest units released - I bought it before it came out. Being an early adopter did NOT pay off. The menu system is the buggiest I've ever used. The HDMI connection is the buggiest I've ever used. The setup is only approachable through the on-TV menus, not the front menus - which is only okay when the HDMI is fully functioning and able to display on the TV (some of the HDMI modes don't work, so if it's set wrong, you're off on a dreadful adventure). Overall, sound quality is similar to my older, better Yamaha amplifiers, but still lacking something. After numerous firmware updates, including one that bricked the unit for a short time, the unit is finally working pretty well. Except for the fact that it regularly gets confused, cuts the source I'm playing, for something like a false wake-up signal via the HDMI. It's the most confused, jumbled, Yamaha device I've ever used, to the point that I really want nothing more to do with it. It's so computer-dependent that I fear that one day, I will go to power it on, and it will simply be bricked permanently on some wonky software update. It's so ludicrous that I'm definitely looking for other options. Looks like a Yamaha, when it's working it sounds like a Yamaha, but the overall experience is NOTHING like what I'm used to from Yamaha. My ears were burned in with Yamaha amplifiers, and I may jump out of my Yamaha brand loyalty thanks to the RX-V6A ... and I would say that Andrew's review is diplomatic, with all the right queues for where this AVR falls short. My vote is NO on the RX-V line ... RX-A only, or go entirely over to Onkyo.
I had 2 Onkyo receivers. The first one just stopped working. The second started to smoke and would have started on fire if I didn't pull the plug. Switched to Yamaha and had no problems and loved the sound.
Same problem I had with Onkyo tx nr686. First it would to randomly power off and then you would have to reset it. Then it would power off and when you try to reset it it would take hours to do because it would essentially just decide on it's on when it wanted to do it. Then FINALLY the last time I tried to power it on it started to smoke and I had to run to unplug it because I thought it was going to burst into flames. This is magically a few months after warranty ended and they didn't want to look at it at all. POS and never again!
I had the same experience with Denon. I've owned three Denon high-end receivers and they all had serious issues after only a few years. Never again. I switched to Yamaha and have had much better luck.
Andrew, First, I really enjoy your videos! Most reviewers I've watched fall into one of two categories...hyper technical, or not technical at all. You're the only one I've found who provides the guy on the street with an easily digestible balance of information that eases both the learning and decision making processes we "consumer grade" users face as we build our systems. That said, I'm hoping you can solve a mystery that is currently driving me batstuff crazy. I recently began searching in the northern Virginia area for a home theater company that would do an "old school" 5.1 audio calibration of my audio system. I had a system calibrated by a MyerEmco sound engineer back in about 2002...he used a calibration microphone connected to a portable spectrum analyzer and he systematically output pink noise to each discreet channel using a DVD with 5.1 channel pink noise test tones. He then used the preamp's onboard 9-band graphic equalizer to get each channel as flat as possible. Back then I had a Pioneer Elite AV receiver, and even with the graphic EQ versus a DSP or parametric EQ he was able to achieve astonishing results. On to my problem...while I have found a couple companies in my area that still do this old-school calibration, all but one only perform the service for home theaters they have designed and installed. The one company that was (kinda) willing to do the calibration insisted I insert cheap DSP's via RCA connections between my preamp and amp claiming the onboard EQ was incapable of achieving the desired flat response. That sounded official and all until I researched the DSP's he recommended and learned that instead of the meager 9 bands my preamp EQ has, the DSP's have a whopping 10 bands. So...not sure why a 9 band solution is so completely inadequate but 10 is just fine? I suppose there may be more steps per band maybe which gives a bit more adjustment granularity, but I'm 60 and I doubt I could hear the difference between a 9 or 10 band result. Also, I don't want to ditch my balanced XLR preamp to amp interconnects for RCA cables! If you've read this far I appreciate it...I will now cough up my question...can you recommend a DIY kit or kluged together collection of gear and software that a residential consumer could use to recreate the calibration process I experienced 20 years ago...which appears to be a dead or dying species. I've researched software like SONARWorks (software and microphone) and similar, but their literature (that I've found so far) doesn't really spell out if it is designed to work with a 5.1 setup. Also, a 5.1 pink noise test DVD also seems to be on the endangered list...I'm aware of the AVIA and AVIA II disks, though again the product descriptions online have been diluted over the many years since their original release and I'm not convinced they have the pink noise tones needed to enable the flattening process (at like $85 a pop). My Marantz 8805A preamp appears to output pink noise for manual setting of channel levels, but I can't find anything in the manual that confirms it is full spectrum pink noise, or just a basic test tone to enable simple dB measurements only. if it helps, here's a quick description of my system as it stands today, a Sony Z9J 85" 8K tv, Marantz 8805A preamp, Parasound HALO A51 amp, REVEL C426Be center channel, four (4) Definitive MYTHOS STL Towers for front L/R and surround L/R, and an SVS PB16 sub. The Marantz onboard Audyssey self calibration makes the system sound like its trapped inside a 55 gallon drum or a refrigerator box. I've labored to tune the EQ by ear which is fine and sounds great don't get me wrong, but obviously the system would get much closer to reference if properly calibrated. I'm happy to put in the time and buy what is needed for a DIY project, but of the products out there at companies like Sweetwater and others, it's difficult to know what to buy, and I've really struggled to find 5.1 pink noise source tones. Like I said, batstuff crazy. In closing, literally ANY thoughts, suggestions, or guidance you might be willing to offer would be greatly appreciated! Beyond that, thanks again for all the great videos and I look forward to the next one. Regards and thanks.
Kristi's absolutely correct. I almost bought the Yamaha V6A, but didn't because of the hdmi 2.1 mess. She's also correct about the Onkyo. I'm getting the 6100 because I need a zone 2. Thanks for the video.
My 7100 is being delivered tomorrow…I needed the 2 extra channels and the built in Dirac seems promising. I’ll be running a 7.1.2 system with the JBL Studio 2 series speakers. 290 fronts (Bi-Amped), 235C center, 220 surrounds, 235 rears, 550 powered sub.
Running a Marantz 5014 with Klipsch 600M’s on the front end. Preamp’d to a Parasound A23+. Rest of the surrounds are run by Berhringer A800’s. Having all sorts of fun with this set up.
Great info as always, Andrew and Kristi! I have the Marantz NR1711 and absolutely love how versatile it is. No issues with the 50W per channel. No Regerts!
Same! I finally got around to installing it last weekend. Crazy value for what you get but kind of wish I waited for that pioneer elite that was just reviewed.
I have the Denon x3700h ($1499) but would've been happy with either of the Onkyo RZ-50 ($1399) or the Pioneer LX505 ($1499). The Pioneer LX305 ($1199) is great but lacks the pre-amp outputs of the other receivers.
I went with the Denon x4700 mainly because this year’s updated model was available before the x3700 …but what makes it worth every cent more than the x3700 is the stiffer chassis w\ drop down front panel, better quality components and bigger power supply, not to mention that Auro3D upmixer (wow!), which “IMHO” is better at channel separation\distribution than Dolby. Guys, I’d love you to know what you think of it.
@@Dannyboy623 Not at all ..in fact I think there’s more ambient audio comes through the rears and height speakers than with Dolby, it’s more intelligible too.
I purchased a Yamaha R6V6a back in February 2021. When the update came available, I was happy to see mine was a newer model and I just had to download and change some settings. Since then, I am 100% happy with my purchase. Sounds great movies and music. I have both PS5 and Series X , so definitely nice to get the 4K 120hz out of both now
I got your point on Yamaha. On my RX-A860, Spotify Connect has never been fixed. Sometimes, I cannot be discovered by my phone. Then, only pulling the power cable helps.
I tried out the Onkyo TX-NR6050 from Costco and ended up returning it and keeping my Yamaha TSR-700. I found the Onkyo sounded more muffled with the mids bleeding into the lows and highs. The Onkyo also had a worse sounding dolby surround upmixing compared to my TSR-700. I even used the built in Onkyo Klipsch settings which were custom made by Klipsch for my speakers. I still preferred the clarity of my TSR-700 over the Onkyo -6050
What a great Christmas surprise...a new video for the weekend! I love my Yamaha TSR-700 (RX-V6A) but you're absolutely correct to leave Yamaha off the list until their promises are realized in a firmware update. I went through a board swap (took less than 8 days to ship, get it done, shpped back) so that wasn't a big hassle. Yet here we still wait for the firmware updates to deliver features we paid for a year ago. "Nuttier than squirrel turds" - Hah! Andrew is more Texan than he wants to admit!
Here's a big wake-up call to all home theatre receiver manufacturers. I want to be able to use my headphones and speakers at the same time! Years ago we use to be able to do that. I want that option back!
Guys, this channel has "AVR Reviews" which include 2ch Stereo performance and experience too. And that's a difference! Thanks for sharing & just keep going 👍 PS: YAMAHA is still horribly UGLY with that AVR design. Even that new look is enough for NOT hitting the TOP5 AVRs list. ONKYO made a gr8 comeback with TX-RZ50, hands down. Kudos to ONKYO 👌
Shout out for the Onkyo 6050. It's Costco's variation of the 6100, with the only differences being 90w instead of 100 and no THX certification. Otherwise identical and it costs $499. It's easily a step up from the 5100 that opens this review video. No dinky speaker connectors and it has a phono. Right now it's out of stock and, with supply constraints, who knows... it's a matter of checking their site regularly. Costco also has a generous return policy. I was able to return my *insanely buggy* Yamaha TSR-700 (rebrand of the V6a) six months after buying it. If you don't like the Onkyo then you can return it easily. Sometimes they stock the new Denon 760 ($449) in store, but I haven't seen those in awhile. Supply problems. No, I don't work for Costco. This year I know how hard it's been to get these and they have been the most reliable source -- especially if you're on a budget.
I do watch your videos regularly and enjoy them, thank you. But recently I purchased an Anthem MRX1140 which I personally find fabulous. And by all accounts is held in very high esteem by anyone who has ever had one. I’m wondering if you’ve ever used or tested any of the Anthem receivers. I’d been interested in your insights.
You are rambling man and you have preference. My Yamaha HTR-4068 was still getting its updates in 2021. thing is nothing wrong with it and has never let me down because of a problem, which my friend does with his Denon.
Saw your Denon X3700H review a while back and other positive reviews. Sadly it was out of stock everywhere. Thought I'd put the X4700H on the list as well since the price difference was pretty narrow. Managed to get a 4700 last week and pleasantly surprised. Music sounds a lot better in stereo but the biggest difference for sure was in the atmos content like you mentioned. Beast of an amp with enough future-proof ness for years to come hopefully!
Hard to believe that the Onkyo is your top choice and recommendation. I would have thought Pioneer's elite series is a way better receiver but I'm old school maybe Onkyo caught up in quality. Truthfully I still have a 1990's Pioneer 7.2ch and yes it's time to upgrade but I have had 0 issues with it all this time and would like to stick to what works. Will most likely pick up the Pioneer again simply for it's durability and name brand but also my own experience. That receiver still works well but obviously doen't have all the modern features and even still it drives any speakers I throw at it with 0 issues. I will be picking up the pioneer VSX -LX505 instead of the 305 that's on your list.
Does the RZ-50 do multi channel DSD from the likes of SACD? From what I can find, it appears to only do 2 channel, unlike it’s Denon equivalents, which would be a show stopper for me.
I am an Onkyo/Integra fan so I am glad to see them take the top spot. I know it was difficult to come down to just 5 units of the hundreds that you review. Integra is said to be more installer friendly, but what are the real differences between Integra and Onkyo? And is Integra worth the additional price?
As I’m returning to the ability to upgrade, and I’m in the habitual learning phase, these videos are very valuable to me. I don’t know if I’ll ever return to the inability to upgrade, so future proofing is going to be a priority to me. Thanks for all of the reviews.
I’ve been debating on the pioneer 505 or it’s twin the onkyo rz50. But decided on the Yamaha a4a for its improved power supply and amazing surround sound processing - to me the higher end Yamaha units just really make your atmos and surround channels pop.
Hey Andrew, I have one question that bothers me a lot, do any of these receivers support MQA fully? Most of us have Tidal specifically in the best quality, and which of the above receivers is fully supported? Thank you on great reviews, because of you, I will decide on one of the models. The receiver I need is the one that supports HDMI 2.1 4K 120Hz, and MQA full support.
I have the Yamaha RX-A8A. I'm happy with the receiver so far, except for the 4K/120 8K/60 update and the audio delay when playing Atmos and DTS-X content. I didn't go with the Denon because of only 1 HDMI 2.1 port. I have a PS5 and series X. Also, I'm building a PC, and I would need all ports to be 40Gbps. Yamaha Pros is all ports are all HDMI 2.1, and I have the option to make multiple sound programs and parametric eq that you don't see in Denon or Marantz.
Well done guys, since the first video I have seen from you I have subscribed to your channel, I like your transparency and your unbiased opinion even with preference setup (Yamaha). One thing it would make a whole lot sense since you are reaching global audiences is to use both US and other countries products numbers, this would make a massive difference for the people outside US. Keep up the good work!
1) QOTD: I don't know! But this video comes at the perfect time for me as my old marantz AVR just kicked the bucket a week ago from a lightning ⚡ strike. Ugh. I was dreading all the research associated with getting a replacement but you know what? I appreciate you doing all the research for me and I am going to pick something from your list. So thank you! 2) I think the quote of the day is Nuttier Than Squirrel Turds. Lol. And would suggest this could potentially be an Andrew Robinson merchandise t-shirt hit! 😂
Hi Andrew! I Am still very happy with my old Pioneer sc lx 75 ! Its a powerhouse ! And also good with musicl😁 Happy to hear you like Pioneer receivers. Greetz all the way from Holland!!!
Honestly, the receiver is the main thing preventing me from going into a home theatre sound setup. I just want an all-integrated, streamlined, minimal system. I know soundbar technology, even with additional wireless speakers and subwoofers, has yet to prove it can match the sound fidelity and compatibility of a a dedicated sound system, but I'm leaning towards it more. I've tinkered enough with optimizing media experience and just want something to work and be easy to use.
Thanks for the #1 recommendation of the Onkyo TX-RZ50. After weeks of searching the web I found one thru the Onkyo Outlet and just received it. Took less time than I thought hooking it up and reading the digital Manual. Too bad the DIRAC product key didn't work (We will be contacting Onkyo and DIRAC on Monday) but she's a powerful and super capable AVR that compares well with the up level Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha models. Got the RZ50 to replace a 6 year old Marantz SR-7012 that had developed several issues.
Very sad not to see Yamaha on the list. I bought the V6A after seeing your review. But I love the sound quality over the Denon 3300, which I was using before. Anyway nice review.
Though I'm not exactly ready to part with my NAKAMICHI ShockWafe Pro, Thank You for your list being full of AFFORDABLE Receiver options. Especially for those of us who've become more budget-minded of late. We shouldn't have to break that bank to get the best (and highest) quality possible. Great Video. Thanks To You and Kristi (along with Katie The Huskie) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I love when you mentioned in a recent video and keep in mind the "Law of diminishing returns". For many of us who can't demo the products, it is great when you can give us viewers an idea of the level improvement ("y") in metric "z", so we can determine if the cost justifies the level of improvement we are expecting to experience.
About the RZ50 and about Marantz. I had the RZ50 here for a couple of days to compare it with an older Marantz sr7010, just because of this review. I did a music / stereo comparison only - paired with a set of KEF R5 & a RC62 Sub. (also tried 5.1 surround with additional r2c + 2 x r3 - this was not part of my listening comparison though). I tested several genres: Jazz, Electronic and some more Voice-Driving guitar heavier sets. I have to say that for at least music, the Marantz beats the RZ50 easily. It sounds "rounder", heavier, more in place and the bass - regardless how hard i try on the settings with the rz50 - more tangible. Looking forward to the Cinema 40 - as the Cinema 50 isnt compareable either. Maybe will be looking and see a Onkjo RZ1100 / RZ3100 successor which might be more compareable - dont you think?
Andrew I love the list and I am stoked to see that the Pioneer Elite 305 made it to number two. I am so eager and excited to see a review of the 505 and how it ranks against the competition especially the Onkyo RZ50. I have a 505 on order right now but they are extremely hard to get in Canada due to the supply chain issues that most manufacturers are suffering. I currently have a 304 that I’m going to upgrade and would love to be able to see you review the 505. Hope you had a fantastic Christmas and happy new year to you and Kristie.
Hi Kristi and Andrew (Ladies First ;) ) Possible video idea after this video and if you are waiting for products to come in to review... inquiring minds would love to get more detail on Dirac Live (in Onkyo & Pioneer), Audyssey XT32 (in Denon) and possibly the calibration used in the Sony HT-A9. How does the sound profile and experience differ between these 5 large AVRs and the Sony HT-A9. Any tips, tricks, tweaks when setting these up or explanations why you choose the settings you did, etc. Many of us rely on auto-calibration and a video on them would make sure we are experiencing what we are paying for. Cheers and a happy early new year.
Fairly informative review ! You are less likely to disappoint Yamaha as a company but ... many of us own or owned Yamaha may still like the sound/field it brought to us in decades which is quite unique vs. any other brands. I owned all brands you mentioned here and currently I have Marantz and Yamaha while my Onkyo is in the box as a spare. Connectivity is important but in the end, it is the sound matters.
Now that's it's 2023 do you still think the Onkyo RZ50 is still the best choice in that price range for the included options? I'm gonna be buying my first AV receiver in the next 2-4 weeks. I'm wanting to listen to music in high quality and eventually add speakers for a Dolby atmos 5.2.4 system for movies. Also what speaker system would you recommend to pair with it? I really love the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-8000F II but they may be a bit out of my price range.
@@RajanKannan11 I haven't bought one yet. I ended up buying a new mattress, adjustable base, and a used bedroom suit. That set me back about 4 grand and put the sound system on hold temporarily.
Good morning, everyone! How's everyone's holiday going so far? I just want to say that we are so grateful to everyone who has helped donate to our fundraising effort to raise money for those impacted by the tornadoes a couple weeks ago. We're over $4000! Thank you all so much! Andrew and I wish you all a very healthy and happy New Year!
Yayyy I donated. I got the Basx A5 for Christmas. Also I got covid for the 2nd time despite being vaccinated 😔. But im dealing with it. Great video as always. Keep donating guys
What is the difference between a receiver and an integrated amplifier ? It would be cool if you could sometimes prepare some tutorial videos about the concepts you speak about for people that are totally new like me (e.g. impedance in speakers)
Cleaner signal path / circuit topology. Integrated with 2ch... Allows the chassis increased shielding options.. often a bigger section for Phone stage.. improved air flow .. etc ..etc.
I had an Onkyo receiver, an older 9 channel one which, even after keeping it cool as a cucumber and surge protected, failed after only 4 years (the sound quality was superb though). Compare that the an old Pioneer 7.1 receiver that's still running strong after 16 years, ditto for Yahama. Reliability for such expensive equipment is essential for me.
Personally I'm a big fan of the Onkyo options, pioneer elite, denon, and the slim marantz offers a unique choice. I imagine most consumers are well served among these receivers that you highlighted.
Hello, was holding out for onkyo txrz50 however in Britain and zero hope. Had onkyo txrz800 for 5 years now and been a powerhouse both musically and for home theater. I have settled for marantz sr7015.
Andrew/ Kristi, please excuse if this question has been asked before, but have you planned to review any of the Anthem product line? Going back well over a decade, I’ve owned two different models of Denon surround receivers, and am currently running an Onkyo TX NR 818. While quite pleased with its sonic performance and GUI, but have been I having grief with HDMI stability with ARC connection to Vizio 65”. The newer smart TVs do a wonderful job of serving as video switching hub, particularly when CEC is enabled to allow selection between my cable service provider’s set top box, Apple TV 4K streamer, Blu Ray player, and old Mac Mini. If it weren’t for the several thousands of dollars invested in DIY loudspeakers and two 3rd party class D power amps for my 7.2 system, I’d be very tempted to divest it all, and consider the Sony HT-A9 and 2 subs. But habits that are several decades old are very hard to break. 🤔👴 As a side note, maybe it’s my 70yo gramps voice here, but am I the only one that finds the Amazon Prime and Apple TV + user interface to be “janky”, when compared to Netflix, or most older AVRs?
ARC is such a pain - I just wish all TVs included a HDMI OUT so we could just send the audio signal over to the receiver. I'd rather deal with the guarantee of sound and pay for an extra cable. Cables are getting tiny now. Optical would have accomplished that if it weren't limited to 5.1 Dolby Digital and could do high-res surround like DD+ or DD TrueHD. Get rid of the optical and add an HDMI AUDIO OUT to guarantee sound.
Great comprehensive review, there is one for every pocket size, features hunger and taste. I just wish they'd look a little more attractive than a black box. The vintage receivers of the 70's were/are a pleasure to look at, but these? Not so much, IMHO! My only complaint.
Thanks again for your great videos! I came back to watch this one because I wanted to pick up an AV receiver for my lounge room. Currently just using a pair of VAF DC7s (old floor standing speakers that I'm pretty happy with) and using a Nintendo Switch, an Apple TV and free-to-air TV channels. After seeing the Onkyo here I picked up their TX-SR393 and loving the sound! Got a bit more set up to do but I reckon I'll be happy with this for quite a while! Cheers!
The biggest issue I have with all of these choices is that none of them have analog multichannel inputs. I realize this has become a niche connection type, but for those of us with legacy multichannel media-including analog quadraphonic formats-it's a necessity. When I was shopping in 2020, the Marantz SR6014 was the least expensive receiver I could find with 7.1 RCA inputs, native DSD support, and full support for then-current-gen. immersive formats (minus Auro-3D and Sony 360 Reality Audio a.k.a. MPEG-H). I believe this is still the case with the current SR6015. The equivalent Denon doesn't have 7.1 RCA in (though apparently measures better; frustrating), and other brands either don't offer this combo of features at all or only at higher price points.
I was a big fan of Yamaha in amps and music instruments. My last Yamaha product ( DTX 9000 drum module) stopped working, I called Yamaha. and they referred me to their authorized repair shop, Jaydon Electronics. Jaydon couldn't fix it, after months of yanking my chain with excuses, the told me that Yamaha was difficult to repair due to lack of schematic information. I gave them $ 400 that were not returned. So even though I like Yamaha products I cant buy ,them anymore !!
Received my RZ 50 last week. Finishing up the theater room over the next few weeks, can’t wait to get things hooked up. Along with the Onkyo RZ 50, I’m installing the Def Tech 9080x 5.1.4 Atmos surround system, the Epson Pro Cinema 6050UB, and Panasonic 4K 820 HD Blu Ray player, Panamax Surge and clean Power protection.
Why did you go with def tech? I'm building my first home theater 5.2.4 is the goal. Any advice or honest feedback would be greatly appreciated. I've been looking at svs, heco Aurora speakers
@@RjTheTrigun They are full range speakers with the front left and right along with the center, all have built in powered sub woofers. I like their sound and really fill up the theater room.
Good video you all. I have the Denon x3700h paired with Marantz MM7055 amplifier. Works great. This is for living room where we don’t do much gaming. Movies/Steaming/Sports, etc. I got good deal on both a year ago. For my case worked out good. However, I am in the market currently for upstairs bonus room & am considering Onkyo/Pioneer due to increased pricing on Denon/Marantz & we do more gaming in this room. My question, in your opinions, is Auro3D worth paying more as an upmixer option OR no? You typically have to upgrade to Denon x4700h or Onkyo RZ 70 when it comes out. Probably close to $400-500 price difference. Obviously a little more power as well. Thoughts?
Onkyo denied they had a design problem across their high end line for 5 years, many people (myself included) refused to pay for the "free" repair at the time, that would have cost me $150 in shipping. Eventually Onkyo admitted they knew about the problem, provided warranty repair, and extended warranty. Meanwhile how many people just threw them away? Many reports of people sending in their receivers multiple times and alway breaking again. I would never trust anything with "Onkyo" silk screened on it ever again.
Andrew, what are your thoughts on the X2700H? It's a little more accessible from a budget standpoint, but just wondering whether it's worth spending more for the X3700H?
Well since I was on a budget single and recently bought a new apartment I went for a Denon 1600DAB with a Jamo 807 HCS sounds quite well for the money .
Mr and Mrs Robinson, Something Ive been thinking about... I have an RS50 on order, partially for the Dirac, which I hope can bail me out of problems with great speakers that suffer only after they are in my room. My question is, wouldn't our opinions of speakers change after Dirac, et al, are applied? Wouldn't "slightly forward" speakers lose some of what makes them special once software makes them all essentially "flat" or worse "lifeless"? Thanks from a fellow music loving Austonian,
Currently have the Denon x4700h and absolutely love it. But every time I see one of your avr reviews, I struggle with the urge to upgrade, even though I’m happy........Then I watch a speaker review and question everything!! 😂😂🤣🤣 Keep up the great work you two!!!!
Bought a Yamaha A-8 this past week. Why? I'm not concerned about the longevity of the company and they are reliable while running cool. My 3000 is running fine and if I need to ship the new unit, I'm prepared. This has been a PIA process due to my having the funds but the product not being available. Now about that X-box....
Hi Andrew, Kristi, this is Andrew from Alberta Canada. Love your channel content. I currently have a decade plus old Pioneer VSX-1127-K which I have loved since plugging it in, having a 7.1 setup with 2 Sony SS-CSE Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers atop my legacy Pioneer CS-V975 4-way front towers, Energy CF-70 surrounds and some (adequate for now but pending upgrade) Pyramid 4080 bookshelves (rears and wides) and a Polk PSW-110 sub. Even without DTS:X or Atmos capable amp I've listened to several UA-cam DTS:X and Atmos demos using Dolby PLIIz and they sound freaking amazing with sound moving all around the room understanding that I'm not actually decoding either of the signals and am listening to a 2 channel stereo signal via UA-cam. I have 11.1 speakers in the room albeit 2 are surround wide and 2 surround back, and the amp can ONLY drive 7.1 speakers itself so its either the front height OR front wide OR room 2 which I choose via a multi-port speaker switch. I ran the MCAAC room correction in my near 400sq ft listening space to ensure best distance accuracy and tonality. Having no access to DTS:X or Atmos with this amp, nor a similar setup to compare. Here's the question... I've been trying to assess if I can justify an upgrade to a true 9.1 or 11.1 receiver with DTS:X and Dolby Atmos for $1600-2100-2500 or more... Would I notice a stand out improvement in spacial acuity? I've heard/watched videos suggesting that the content mixed into Atmos movies is moreover sadly lacking, as if it was a lazily thrown in afterthought by the engineers. Seems like a lot of money for little gain, if any. I'm currently being drawn to the SCLX305, SCLX505 or SCLX705. (the $4300 for the SCLX905 is out of reach) Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance.
I see review is a couple of years old. I must say, I purchased a Yamaha A6A that replaced a Emotiva MC-700 with a 5 channel amp from Rotel. I went back to the Emotiva/Rotel setup. this pair sound a lot more crisp and clearer when playing music. I was quite surprised.
FYI:. The Onkyo 5100 does not have a full 40gbps for HDMI 2.1. it only provides 24gbps, so although it it can do 4k 120fps with hdr, it cannot do 4k 120fps Dolby vision. It can only do Dolby vision gaming at 60fps. Because of that I will be trading mine in for the 6100.
Andrew love your videos and reviews but really wish you would give some attention to the more mid priced hi fi gear out there. Anthem MRX series, Arcam, and some higher end speakers. Would love to see a review on the MRX 740 as I’m really interested in that item. Parasound Halo products.
Hi just a question, now that the updates are available for the v6A and seen that its working great do you think that a v6A that goes for around 2/3rds the price of the denon x3700h in my country is a better deal? Any response would be great.
Two years later and I believe Yamaha leans more towards musical accuracy with their brighter sound compared to Denon and, dare I say, the newest Pioneer Elites.
I purchased the Denon x4700h 3 weeks ago the sound is incredible, after 2 weeks the right channel stop working. Magnolia didn’t have them in stock and they just had another price increase to 2199 I’m thinking about the Pioneer vsx-lx505, are you planning to review the VSX-LX 505 ? Thanks.
You guys are great! I just pulled the trigger on the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505 to replace my LX304, and it should arrive this week. I expect that I will love it, as I've had three or four Pioneer Elite's over the past couple of decades. I was thinking about the RZ50, but its not easy to find. I suspect the 505 and RZ50 are pretty much the same receiver. Denon used to be my favorite, then I had Sony ES for a while (sony ES used to be great), and I've been bouncing between Yamaha's and Pioneer Elites for a while. I find the Yamaha's to be very confusing to setup and use. I think I like the Pioneer Elites the best. One thing I miss in receivers is the ability to play video from one source, and audio from another - handy when playing a game or watching sports, but wanting to listen to music while doing so. Question: Do you use a power conditioner? I have a Monster HTS-3500, but with the LX505, I can't fit both in my cabinet.
Ive been eyeballing the 505 my self really hard! Cant find the rz50, and the 505 seems to be incedibly close to the rz50. So i think im gonna get that. Im just a little concerned that NO one seems to be talking about the 505 at all for some reason
does the size of the room matter when getting a receiver? I have a 5.1.2 set up in my 9x12 bedroom using an onkyo 676. This receiver is missing some features i want. Would an denon x3700h be overkill in such a tiny bedroom?
Great video again! I love the reviews and it's great to hear about equipment/brands that I would never have looked at before. I " still" have a Marantz SR7013 and it's still a pretty great receiver. I'll get a new one when I get a TV that supports VRR and Marantz/Denon get their 40k120 business in order ;-). The one thing I always look at when I get a new receiver is that I get Audyssey Multeq XT32 and not the "just" Multeq XT one. To my ears, there's a big difference and worth the extra cost. Someday I'm going to get into Dirac Live, but Audyssey has served me really well since even the days Onkyo still had it in their receivers. Happy Holidays and can't wait for the new content in 2022!

@@olimarputin7862 No worries! Happy New Year!
Like: Denon 1912 (has 5.1) since 2010 runs warm
Love: Denon AVR-X3700H (5. 2 independent sub outputs .4 atmos; Has atmos dts:x Imax dts:Neo6)
and Denon AVR-S760H (5. 2 identical sub outputs .2 atmos; Has atmos dts:x) since 2021
runs warm.
I love streaming Spotify from my iPhone to Denon HEOS receivers and the 7 Denon HEOS
The Denon for me
Time to do this again for 2024?
Yep
" .....Nuttier ...Than Squirrel Turds " .......
My time spent watching until the end of this ..was definitely rewarded.
The Yamaha V6A firmware is now updateable. Just updated mine and it now supports 8k/60 and 4k/120.
It still is limited to YUV420 at 120hz since it's bandwidth is limited, and lacks ALLM and VRR.
Could you do a 2023 version now maybe??
Pretty please 😉
Which is better? Denon AVR-X3700H or the Onkyo TXRZ50 AV receiver?
Thanks.
That’s so cool!! Your wife is a real gem! Thank you so much for watching the channel. We really do appreciate it.
So glad you finally got everything in place. We hope that it brings you a lot of joy and fun in the New Year.
@@davidl2078 That's awesome! Glad to hear it!
FYI, just snagged my RZ50!! All you have to do is keep checking amazon multiple times throughout the day. But, you gotta be quick, they sell out fast!
No Regerts!
The 1711 is fantastic! One of the standouts this year for sure!
100 W is only 3dB more than 50 W anyway.
I wish marantz or any other manufacturer would make a slim line receiver with full pre-outs only (no amps) AND keep it at this price
My Yamaha RX-V6A did get a FW update recently that enabled several 'promised' features. I'm happy with mine.
That's awesome!
I just picked up the ONKYO TX-RZ50 to replace/update my tx-rz830. It's GREAT and the DIRAC LIVE is amazing in my 7.4(1).4 setup.
@strawbs. Does using the auro3d up mixer cause the rear surrounds to go silent ? Thought I heard that on some other UA-cam channel
@@Dannyboy623 Not at all ..in fact I think there’s more ambient audio comes through the rears and height speakers than with Dolby, it’s more intelligible too.
Agree with that. I've both the 3600h and 4700h. Yes, Auro 3D does sound better than Dolby for sure.
a 2024 update would be very useful
Solid list. Another great episode. I love my Marantz receivers. I hope to see the Marantz SR lineup make it on the channel.
What would you use that for? Just curious.
My Onkyo RZ50 is finally being shipped to me this week after being on pre-order since September 13 2021
Guys, this channel has "AVR Reviews" which include 2ch Stereo performance and experience too.
And that's a difference!
Thanks for sharing & just keep going 👍
PS: YAMAHA is still horribly UGLY with that AVR design.
Anthem is in a different league then above receivers. It’s an audiophile company vs consumer brands available in most AV stores.
@@jacek19802611 Ii have a Mx 300 used with an anthem pv5 and it was excellent.
Anthem is in another league compared to these modest receivers. The new 40 series kills these units in sound and build quality.
You some lunatic….
Old Japanese Pioneer( equipment back then) is not the same like today what we have from the same Vietnam or Malaysia factories .
Thanks for watching!
I’ve been debating on the pioneer 505 or it’s twin the onkyo rz50. But decided on the Yamaha a4a for its improved power supply and amazing surround sound processing - to me the higher end Yamaha units just really make your atmos and surround channels pop.
Hey Andrew,
I have one question that bothers me a lot, do any of these receivers support MQA fully?

And also good with musicl😁
Happy to hear you like Pioneer receivers. Greetz all the way from Holland!!!
Great to hear! Enjoy all the way from Texas!
That RZ-50 is the real deal. Great recommendation!
Though I'm not exactly ready to part with my NAKAMICHI ShockWafe Pro,
Thank You for your list being full of AFFORDABLE Receiver options.
Especially for those of us who've become more budget-minded of late.
We shouldn't have to break that bank to get the best (and highest) quality possible.
Great Video.
Thanks To You and Kristi (along with Katie The Huskie)
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
When it comes to AVRs you DO NOT need to spend a ton of $$$ to get GREAT quality. Have a great rest of your day!
Hi Kristi and Andrew (Ladies First ;) )
Possible video idea after this video and if you are waiting for products to come in to review... inquiring minds would love to get more detail on Dirac Live (in Onkyo & Pioneer), Audyssey XT32 (in Denon) and possibly the calibration used in the Sony HT-A9.
What about NAD? Particularly T758v3i
Fairly informative review !
I really love the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-8000F II but they may be a bit out of my price range.
which AVR did you choose? Pls share your experiences.
@@RajanKannan11 I haven't bought one yet. I ended up buying a new mattress, adjustable base, and a used bedroom suit. That set me back about 4 grand and put the sound system on hold temporarily.

Allows the chassis increased shielding options.. often a bigger section for Phone stage.. improved air flow .. etc ..etc.
Onkyo RZ50 FTW! Been a fan of Onkyo for the last 15 years and never looking back.
Anthem has my number 1 spot.
I have settled for marantz sr7015.
marantz sr7015 great choice
As a side note, maybe it’s my 70yo gramps voice here, but am I the only one that finds the Amazon Prime and Apple TV + user interface to be “janky”, when compared to Netflix, or most older AVRs?
I wish these receivers looked better too. I don't know why these brands keep making the same boring boxes.
Ikr, bring back “affordable” vu meters!!! You have to spend big bucks to get an extra $40 in parts!
Cheers!
I got very lucky and found an RZ-50 for sale on Amazon a few months back. It's been fantastic so far.
So even though I like Yamaha products I cant buy ,them anymore !!
that sucks for an expensive item such as this, reliability and repairability matters.

Thoughts?
hOW ABOUT the Pioneer 505 ? What can you say about it ?
Onkyo denied they had a design problem across their high end line for 5 years, many people (myself included) refused to pay for the "free" repair at the time, that would have cost me $150 in shipping. Eventually Onkyo admitted they knew about the problem, provided warranty repair, and extended warranty. Meanwhile how many people just threw them away? Many reports of people sending in their receivers multiple times and alway breaking again. I would never trust anything with "Onkyo" silk screened on it ever again.
Hey Andrew
My budget allows me to get the new Denon 1700H or the Denon 2700H
Which one should I get?
Andrew, what are your thoughts on the X2700H? It's a little more accessible from a budget standpoint, but just wondering whether it's worth spending more for the X3700H?
Well since I was on a budget single and recently bought a new apartment I went for a Denon 1600DAB with a Jamo 807 HCS sounds quite well for the money .
Mr and Mrs Robinson,
Something Ive been thinking about...
If you’re happy with your Denon, I see no reason to change. I’m sure it’s great considering the 3700 made our list!
Dear Andy what would be your choice between denon x4700h and onkyo rz50. Does auror 3d is a big difference maker vis a vis atmos
Hi Andrew and Kristi...great video.....HAPPY HOLIDAYS....be safe and be well...cheers from Vulcan Canada
Same to you!
What about the NAD T 778? You gave it a phenomenal review when you reviewed it.
For clarity…..which do you find better; the Yamaha or Emotiva? I’m considering the A6A and will appreciate your insight.
Emotiva, mind you, i have the least expensive unit. And it sounds better than the yamaha.
I find having separate units. Sound better. I would get a receiver and amp. It’s the way i have it.
Hello Andrew. Love the work you and Mrs Robinson are doing. How would you compare or judge the rx-a3080 and the rx-a6a?
Andrew love your videos and reviews but really wish you would give some attention to the more mid priced hi fi gear out there. Anthem MRX series, Arcam, and some higher end speakers. Would love to see a review on the MRX 740 as I’m really interested in that item. Parasound Halo products.
He knows all about them. They are the ones that for whatever reason, do not supply "The Recovering Audiophile" with a sample to listen to.
I was looking at the mrx540 as all I’m running is a 5.1. Would you recommend this at the current price of 1800 or would you head a different direction
Thanks.
if we speak on stereo sound quality only, onkyo z50 or nad t778?
Thank you Andrew & Kristi !😘

I'm stilling running my old yamaha rx1800 had it like 14 years now
You guys are great!
