  • Today I review the Onkyo TX-NR676 A/V Receiver. The current price puts this in the budget range, and what you get with this AVR is pretty nice: amzn.to/2JDVfef

    I purchased this AVR and the Onkyo Dx-C390 CD player and using the Polk T50 speakers and I’m definitely happy with this setup and agree with you about having to crank the volume. Great review.

    Great Vid! I'm very satisfied with this receiver as its the best intro atmos unit with dolby vision passthrough for the price.
    I would add that I'm pretty sure the ACCU eq represents the built in equalizer settings after doing room calibration.
    Meaning it is flattening room response by changing the freq. bands in the built-in equalizer that is not visible, but you can make your own presets or just turn off accueq in the quick menu. Your distance settings will remain active. If you keep it turned on then be sure to re run room correction if you add acoustic treatment to your room as the accueq won't have to work as hard if the room response is flatter and you'll get better reference sound!

    Thanks Techno Dad for doing this followup review. I have the TX-NR777 which is older like yours, but it's a little more powerful and also comes with THX certification. I'm sure the NR777 can also be picked up at a good price for anyone looking for a deal...I like it. I picked up the NR777 because it has decent support for my front & center channel 4 ohm speakers. The EQ calibration did not work well with my speaker placement so I just used a good movie and manually adjusted the volumes by ear. Your advice on volume levels vs. distance has me wanting to go back and change all of my volume levels to flat, neutral, or 0 and use my distance control to balance the sound. I'll start by using my tape measure and see how that works and adjust as needed. Man, I really need to start learning how to use apps and WiFi:)

      Hi Josh!! I mean, it really depends on what you’re looking for. Just 5.1 there are some options in the $300 range. If you want Atmos or DTS:X you’ll need a 7 Channel AVR.

    Hey Channa, another great video. Were you using your SVS Ultra 5.1 system when testing the Onkyo TX NR676? Do you think the Klipsch Reference Premiere system (280FA, 450C) would experience the same power issues you noticed during the test?

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  6 років тому

      Hi! I was using the SVS Prime Satelite 5.1, not the Ultra 5.1. I think Klipsch will normally be easier to drive since the speaker are sensitive already. SVS would be harder to push, and I also have a rom that's over 4000 cubic feet.

    Thanks for the good video! If I can offer a comment, I've noticed that a couple of your videos (as well as videos from many others) include comments relating volume levels shown on a dial to power output, ie having to turn something up 'more' to get a desired volume imting that an amp may be weak. That type of statement can't be reliably made, as it's possible to set up a receiver so that turning the volume all the way up yields less than maximum amp output and also that turning volume 'halfway' maxes out an amp.
    Ignoring other factors like setup, trim levels, possible input stage clipping, etc, volume tapers differ from manufacturer and even from model to model within the same line. There are no conclusions that can be drawn about total power output relative to a volume setting; all that shows is that volume control for the current settings (trim, EQ, etc) needs to be set at X level to achieve y output. If your speakers are putting out the same volume as measured with a db meter, then the amp is putting out the same power as any other amp regardless of volume setting. At that point the only way to definitively know the actual remaining output is to measure the amplifier itself (via dyno for example) so please be careful with equating volume settings with amp power.
    Here's a nice thread on the subject if you're interested in some other comments on the subject: audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/power-vs-volume-knob-position-power-vs-volume-spl.699065/

    im looking for this sterero. mainly for the bluetooth, number of hdmi in and outs, phono and that it supports 7.2.
    for now have a 2.0 system but i dont know about the future yet. The main purpose is music and some gaming.
    should i look for aomething else in this pricerange or am i good with this one.
    Was a bit worried when you talked about how you had to turn the volume up to 75% to get a desired experience. Although thats very individual and my livingroom is smaller than yours.
    Great review!

    I have a pioneer vsx 524k. This Onkyo has more up to date functions which is compatible with my tv LG 65sk90 which along with the OLeds are the only TV's with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos with Netflix lol. Power wise should I replace it with this one. Pioneer did have good power and sounds real nice. I have four polk audio tsi500 cherry, CS20 center channel cherry, and Polk psw108 sub which I'm replacing with Polk's new HTS12 subwoofer.

    Hi Techno Dad trust you well. I have had the Onkyo 676 for a while and so far so good. I recently purchased the klipsch RP-8000F which is way bigger speakers then what i currently have. I would like to find out will my 676 be able to push those speakers given that they much bigger and they also rated at 8 ohms. Would it be an ok matchup or will it be totally wrong?

  • @SMWTheBar

    I may need your help... Looking to upgrade from an entry-level Vizio 5.1 sound bar. Been eyeballing Samsung Q950T (or the new flagship sound bar from either Samsung or LG this year) OR start down the path of AVR + speakers.
    100% certain that I’m going to eventually want 5.1.4 or better. Which means I’m starting with something like a Denon 9.2.
    Just looking for an opinion- you think I should go with the AVR and something like the Klipsch RP 600s (left and right) and slowly build? Or soundbar with Atmos from the gate?
    Just a little tough trying to be financially responsible, when I know that what I WANT could easily cost 6k+. But I tend to value picture over sound. So spending more on speakers than the oled also hits home.

    I live at a small apartment at the moment and have a "servicible" soundbar sub setup. Its fine most of the time but there are certain youtube videos that I watch where even at max volume I can still barely hear the voices.
    Since I am planning to have an atmos setup when I get my own house, will this Onkyo AVR help me out in amplifying the sound of my soundbar in the meantime? Or will I only end up with a fried SB?

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  5 років тому

      Hi! Are you referring to the Onkyo TC-SR705?? If so this AVR won’t be able to come close to the power your 705 has. I would go with the TX-NR787 ($599) at the VERY least. It still may not have the same amount of power output. So I would recommend the 787 or higher.

    FYI I'm noticing the same front speaker "bug" with mine. I have Polk floor speakers as my front L&R and the receiver will not let me change them to "small" speakers nor adjust the crossovers for them since the initial setup. Going to play with your workaround tonight to see if I can get the option to pop up.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  6 років тому +1

      Wow! I thought I was alone. Please try it out and let me know what happens.

    • @iK0NiK
      @iK0NiK 6 років тому

      So apparently Onkyo decided that the only way they'll let you decide your speaker crossover is if you tell it you're running a subwoofer. I was running a 3.0 setup, but when I told it I was running 3.1 with a sub it allowed me to set my x-over for the front floorspeakers. FYI on the Onkyo setting any form of crossover on a speaker automatically converts it to a "small" speaker when compared to other receivers. It's not a selection you can exactly make. That was a new one on me.

  • @josepallan4062

    Great video dude. Just one question about the Receiver tho. Is it supposed to click twice after turning on? Like it does the first click once you hit the on button and right after the start up it does a another click, is that normal? The reason I ask is because some times when I unplug it and plug it back I turn it on and at the start up it shows “Amp Speaker” but it won’t show that again ever unless I unplug it and plug it back up. Is that normal?

      If you want to strictly stay 7.2, then I would try to stretch your budget and go with the Denon X3400H (amzn.to/2SdaBqS) for $599. It’s down from $999, and that’s a great deal! It has pre-outs if you need more power sometime down the line and will be better suited to your room than the Onkyo NR676

    Hello, TDad
    Long time enthusiast and follower of this show. I truly enjoyed your content and all your assistance through my years of being a enthusiast in this field.
    I’m hoping you can produce a video on the new TX-NR696. I recently purchased it and I’m quite taken by the unit with all its new features vs my TX-NR636. I’ve owned the unit for bout a week now and I’m noticing that the sub preout is a little short on power or ummmph should I say unless you use both sub preouts. My older 636 could out power my sub (Ref. kilpsch 10”) quite easily. Atmos or Hd-Ma tracks couldn’t go past 40 on the volume do to how much more powerful my older unit was practically. But on my paper the 696 is technically more powerful but I’m having to bring up the volume to 60% in order to get the desired result of my older unit. In any case I would really enjoy your input in this unit and see what your experience and results are.

    I’ve got an urgent question. I bought the TX-NR686 a few weeks ago. Setup a 5.1 channel setup with Klipsch Reference Theater Pack. Each speaker is 50 watts and center channel is 75 watts. I’ve used it a few times since buying it and they’ve worked fine but today I powered it on and the front left speaker wasn’t identified. Ran the calibration and it didn’t identify it at all. Switched the speaker out of that channel in the back with the front right speaker and that wasn’t identified either when plugged in to the front left speaker channel input. That channel seems to have blown. I’ve had it 2 weeks and rarely used it. I’m just going to end up returning it tomorrow unless there’s another way to fix it? Please help!

    Question: Hey Techno Dad, I'm a little confused because I was looking at this receiver because OF THE POWER . . . I know it's a budget receiver, but it can not only push 6 ohms speakers but also all the way down to 4 ohm speakers according to the specs . . . .other receivers close to $1000 cannot consistently do that . . .also it specs at having 1470 total watts whereas other more expensive Onkyo and Denon receivers max out at around 700 - 1200 watts. I'm considering this receiver because I just bought some floor standing and bookshelf ELAC speakers at 6 ohms and need more power that my old Denon 2803 receiver which may or may not handle that well . . .. So, I'm buying the receiver due to its power capability . . am I looking at this correctly? Also, (side question), does Onkyo have 5 channel or 7 channel stereo or is that just Denon who does that? I though that Denon and Onkyo are or were somewhat related and would have similar technologies. Thanks!!!

      Hey TZ I own this reciever. It does 7 and 5 channel stereo. The issue I'm having with it now is no pre out so I can't connect a preamp to it. Unfortunately I'm not much help on the power side either as I'm also curious about its specs as they seem to good to be true :(

    • @william99740

      My understanding is you take the two channel rating at your ohm level, add them together, then subtract 20 percent due to exagerated power ratings. After that divide that number by the number of channels using the power supply 😉

    +Techno Dad i have a 656 since the end of 2016 and it is still running smoothly. The onkyo's main issue is AccuEQ, it sets every channel to a flat sound and this is why you have to raise the volume how ever if you know how to navigate you can get way better sound than some Denons and Yamaha's for way less. Things that need tweaking are:- channel level calibration, this raises the level of the speakers without needing to raise the main volume, the preset equalizer, there are frequencies for each channel even the subwoofer, this really changed my sound on my 656, then there is the AccuEQ for all channels which makes everything like a whisper, if you change that to ex. L/R the sound comes back up. When you have a proper manual EQ setup and you turn on the Music Optimizer the music sounds great and Studio-Mix is best for music but you only get that option if you use more then 2.1 channels.
    To battle the heat you can buy an AV receiver fan cooler.
    Onkyos are great, my next one will be a higher tier. one from the THX line up

      leonard lewis best info by far. I just finished doing all this with mine. I’m not very happy with movies though. Way to much bass coming out even though I have the eq and bass turned down. I dont even have a sub woofer hooked up. Besides that the music sounds great

    • @Leonard_Lewis
      @Leonard_Lewis 5 років тому +1

      @@jamesa6272 Did you configure the EQ for all channels?...if not then do so because you can, what is weird thought is that for all channels except the subwoofer you have 15 bands but you are only able to adjust 9 with a -/=6Db and with the subwoofer you can adjust all six bands but the frequency range only goes as low as 25hz which limits subwoofers that can go lower IMO. For movies you have to take the Music Optimizer off and use Dolby surround/DTS neural X or Theater Dimentional. There is also the Tone controls, the treble control is best raised higher than the Bass control. My receiver's volume is alwys at 40 with how i have set mine up and i hear everything clearly on some klipsch speakers with SVS subwoofers.
      Also, try the Onkyo controller app, i have the android version and operating the receiver with it is faster than the remote IMO.

You may have to turn it up a little bit to get the desired sound, but that depends on the size of your space. At such a low price, you could get away with this and then start saving for an upgrade in 3 or 4 years.
