I watched about seven or eight videos on the same subject and they were so poorly done that I had to turn them off prematurely. Then I watched this instructional video. What a difference! Also pointed out the importance of the right cable for each option. That's the trouble with UA-cam, one will obtain a super high quality instructional videos such as this one followed by six or seven really bad ones. Thank you for a professionally done, most excellent instructional video on how to connect up a smart TV to an AVR.
Thanks so much for very clear instructions. I purchased a Sony Bravia tv and was attempting to hook up a dvr and avr with what I now know were obsolete hdmi cables. Having wasted hours trying a host of different connections and either getting audio, no video or the other way around I was seriously thinking of chucking the avr out! Your explanation of the optical cord option solved my issue in 2 minutes (after finding the correct input settings on the Pioneer avr). I was contemplating shelling out a few hundred for a sound bar. So glad I found your video!
I just got a Yamaha receiver a few months ago and finally opened my TV and thanks to you I'll be listening to my Xbox Series X through my Yamaha towers tonight! I've got quite a few other items (300 disc player, vinyl player) that have to be hooked up as well.
But now you've decided to give up all technology and go on a life journey just like frodo and sam. You want to seek out knight rider in a dark and rainy 🌧 English village. He's got a gold ring 💍 for you.
Thank you so much, you helped solve a mystery with my surround sound that over 10 people including engineers, technicians, and others couldn't solve. You said to use high-speed HDMI which no one realized and I was able to solve it once you mentioned it.
Thank you ..... I viewed your Video over & over until I found a way. The Optical connection did it. I hooked up an old Sony Home Theater to a 2021 Romulo smart TV.
Thank you this was really helpful. I spent lot of time with my TV and Receiver manufacturers and they were not able to help with connection. After watching this video I'm enjoying my home theater now.
Thank you for this helpful video! I was like 5 steps from wits end trying to connect my LGTV to my Receiver using ARC. Didn't realize that the TV has a specific ARC port. I thought all of them were the same. One quick change and setup later and now I can control my receiver with my Magic Remote. Appreciate the tutorial!
Me too. I have a new LG C1 and I can't make it work on ARC for my Sony receiver's speakers to work. Brand new cord. What was the solution Jeff? Did you buy a specific "ARC" cord? I'm using a new high speed cord. This TV has no white/red connections.
In a Sony DH-950 receiver, there's standard setting, which is where my old Sony Bravia was set to automatically, and then "enhanced" which is the 4k mode. You must switch it, or you won't get sound on the new TV's with an ARC connection.
@@Blackdog4818 Hey! I used a regular HDMI cord and connected it to the ARC ports on the receiver and the HDMI. Then ran the sound setup on the LG. On my Yamaha, I set the ARC audio to "Audio 1". That solved a lot of problems. It will disconnect from time to time but if I switch back to audio 1, Im straight
Yeah, that's probably the 4k mode. You might want to read the instructions like I should have. You can usually find them online with a search. I found my Sony DH-590 full manual, and found that there were 2 settings, and only one works with 4k. Could be the same way with the Yamaha Amp as well.
And then if you figure out the right ARC connection, you have to make sure you're not on surround sound, or you'll get the music and background audio but no dialog. I had to switch my 2 stand speakers (not a sound bar) to "2 channel" vs. "5.1 surround". If I accidentally touch surround sound on my receiver, it cuts out the dialog. LOL.

Old but gold 👍 I wish you have explained that you loose surround sound with toslink. Most TVs also today only provide PCM2.0 signal (stereo) and then it is up to the AVR reciever to transcode the signal over to surround. Some TVs do provide pass thru, but not many. This is why it is best to use HDMI with ARC. Please also be aware that not all apps installed on smart TVs output surround. So check that too, if you have issues 🙂
Without question, the best instructional video I have watched for configuring my AVR 5 channel audio and HDMI connections to my home theatre system (Samsung TV & Denon AVR).
Thanks for your clear information I have a new smart TV that needed connection with and old surround sound receiver I was going crazy until I ran across your site 😜
Great video! I have struggled for years to connect my old (vintage) HK AVR to our Samsung "SmartTV." So, now I can actually hear FM radio (I made a simple antenna that works!), connect to my DVD, use AirPlay (with RocketFish adapter) to connect iPhone/iPad to receiver and watch on TV. I did not watch the entire video, so I don't know if you covered how to set-up so that the AirPlay sound comes out my speakers, rather than the TV speakers.
I now understand how to more efficiently use my 12 yr old Sony AV receiver. Also, the functions of HDMI and digital optical cables. you present precisely with careful camera directions!
Does your Sony AV have the HDMI connections? if not how did you connect it to the tv to get the best quality sound? I have a older Sony home theater system any info appreciated

Love this video, I was able to solve the sound problem on my surround system. I had both the ARC HDMI and the Optical cable connected, since I disconnected the optical cable, the sound is fixed, do not have to crank up the volume, thank you!!
@@r0b0gam3r9 I am not a techie, just trial and error. Yes, I was told that you do not need the Optical cable if you are connected via Arc. Hope you get it fixed.
If anyone is struggling to get HDMI signal out to their 4K tv. Try plugging in a regular computer monitor. That's what worked for me. Also enable picture by picture for some Sony 4K TVs.
Just connect your TV to receiver by digital audio out, and everything else plugged into hdmi on your tv. It works with no muss or fuss. Even you PC sound will work in multi-channel (Dolby, DTS, etc) sound. Most people can't tell the difference in sound quality. You'll even get multi-Channel sound from UA-cam. Even though they only broadcast in stereo. Your receiver or TV will change it into surround sound.
GOOD INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO! Your only mistake is you did not turned on the Audio Video Receiver and Television to show your viewers how it works after connecting the cables successfully.

Wow! I was watching another video and accidentally touched my phone and this video came on. I've been having trouble connecting my sterei. This video was very informative. I never knew this
I just found your channel yesterday. Excellent videos. Okay, so I’m following you so far. The tv and the AVR connection I got. What if I’m adding in a Samsung sound bar? What would be the signal flow between the three of them, and the connections I would make. (I’ll be adding in a Xfinity box and a DVD player a ways down the road.) Edit: I also wanted to add that the signal is coming into the tv from it being connected to the WiFi in the house.
Just a note, if your old receiver has analog RCA input, and the TV has opto output, for about 15 bucks for a converter, opto in analog out. Cheap dirty , and works
Thank you for your video. My new Blaupunkt TV has NO ARC socket and 3 HDMI sockets. It has a digital audio socket and so does my AVR. I need to connect it to my Denon AVR, which does have an ARC socket. What do I do? Thanks!
Thank you for this video! I am not getting a multi channel sound using the optic cable while steaming. Utilizing a cable box or Apple TV with the HDMI, I get full multi-channel sound. Do I need some type of device, in between the tv and the AVR to get the full sound when streaming? Thanks!
Question for the page. If I purchase a new OLED 4K TV will I have to purchase a 4K receiver? As I plug in my Apple TV, blu-Ray etc into the receiver and then into the TV. Thanks a million for your help.
This Video was helpful but I have a problem regarding streaming. The house we bought in 2014 had a pretty involved entertainment system. It had a remote AV system (Marantz 5009) in a small closet in our frog along with the router and modem. As long as we were using cable, the 5.1 and the TV in the living room worked well but after many years of the rising prices of services, we went over to a Roku. At that point, we lost the 5.1 and only had the TV speakers. (Samsung vintage 2014 and couldn't add apps) Quality was not the same. Started reading up on HDMI transmitter/ receivers and purchased one with extended range. ( TV to AV and receiver was over 40' and 2 walls.) The AV had a CBL/Sat input and a monitor output to TV. Plugged the receiver into the CBL/Sat input on the AV with 5v power cord. I plugged the transmitter directly into the Roku and plugged both 5V power cords off the Roku and transmitter into the 2 USB ports in the back of the TV. I set the TV sound to Audio out and made some adjustments on AV remote and amazingly, It all worked!!! We now can enjoy both great tv movie and music sound.
Helpful and I get the connection of the cables... I have a smart TV running directly to the internet and running apps like Prime+, etc. How do I program the TV to push the audio to the amp? Is there a setting in the TV audio output to push it? SO far I can't find it on my Samsung series 8 TV
Thank you for the video. Can you have both HDMI ARC and optical out from TV to the A/V receiver and choose which one you want to hear form? I was thinking to connect a mixer in between TV optical out and A/V receiver. Will be possible? So when watching movies I choose HDMI port and when singing karaoke I choose optical sound input from the mixer?
Thanks for this video I think it was helpful. I have an older Denon AVR 889. It has an HDMI OUT port but it dosen't say ARC on it the LG smart tv has 4 hdmi ports 1 is an ARC port. If I use an optical conection as well as an hdmi conection will I get sound to the speakers thru the receiver. Will I get 5.1 ans will the sound be in sync with the picture.
My connection rules go like this: Any device where the audio is at or below the capabilities of ARC (5.1) gets connected directly to the television. For me that’s a Gen2 Apple TV, a VHS VCR, and an old DVD player/recorder. My cable box gets connected to the AVR unit, so its 7.1 (and beyond) audio capabilities can be best utilized. With the Apple TV and the DVD and VCR, I also have direct digital audio to the AVR. This is for instances where those devices might be used for audio-only, and not need anything onscreen. With OTA of course I lose 7.1, but all those channels are available via cable anyway. But sometimes I use OTA anyway, because the lack of compression artifacts makes the viewing experience more enjoyable.
Thanks for this video. I have my tv connected via optical to a non arc AVR. Is there a way I can pair my TV remote to the AVR? It’s a Yamaha RX-V863. Thanks for your help!
You should show a regular analog dolby surround setup, some people still have those and you can get surround through that. The down is that its just Dolby Pro Logic Surround. Now I think that is a good option if you have a bigger old Dolby Surround Pro Logic AVR. Many of those AVR's have sound fields and options that you just don't see on the simple AVRs of today. Also the new ones are cannot use a tape deck, only play but not for recording. Some of us still have older stuff. This is why I am going to keep with just dolby pro logic surround, it's way simpler and connects to the most components.
Thank you . Sound only come out from FL and R speakers for my Tv connected with optic cable. But for channel for my blue ray player connected with HDMI is fine I did also connected the hdmi arc in order to play blue ray to tv. Is this correct ? Instead of optic to bring the audio signal to AVR , I don’t prefer to use HDMI so that I only use the AVR for certain tv programmes. Is the sound normal to come out from part of speakers only in the system!
Great video, i have a question: If I buy a dolby atmos 4K but not 8K compatible avr, and in the future upgrade to a 8K tv, could i then connect the devices to the TVs HDMI (e.g. a 8K blue ray player) and then use ARC to connect the tv to the receiver and still get dolby atmos from blue ray player sent to avr? If I were to connect it to the avr, i would lose 8K video, but not if connect to the tv (assuming 8K tv hdmi's ports are 8K compatible) Hope that makes sense
Good video. I have an receiver where I just want to play music or radio through a sound bar ( not as a home theatre) . I don’t have hdmi on the back of the receiver but do have optical outlets . I hooked up the receiver via optical cable ( out) to back of sound bar ( in) but no luck . Is this even a possibility for it to work? If so, I’m thinking it may be some channel that I have to figure out by trial and error. Thanks for your video
I plug my tv into my reciever with HDMI, reciever out to the ARC hdmi point, and nothing happens. I just want the sound to go to my reciever when im watching netflix. What am i doing wrong
I gave up. Every day the TV HDMI gets into HDMI lock and doesn't recognize the receiver. Now I'm using an optical cable. I need to use two remotes now, but everything is working just fine.
Interesting video, thanks for posting. However I do have a query, the silver HDMI Out on the back of the amp, shouldn't that be HDMI In as it is taking in the signals from the TV?
Thank you so much! But to be sure I understand....I have a Smart tv, with a satellite box as well as a stream box. If I want the sound to come receiver and home theater speakers for all devices and apps, I should connect all of the devices (satellite, steam box dvd, etc) to the TV and use a Toslink cable to connect from the tv to the receiver? Will this allow me to switch the source via the TV but keeping the sound of everything coming through the receiver/speakers?

If I buy a dolby atmos 4K but not 8K compatible avr, and in the future upgrade to a 8K tv, could i then connect the devices to the TVs HDMI (e.g. a 8K blue ray player) and then use ARC to connect the tv to the receiver and still get dolby atmos from blue ray player sent to avr?
I found your video helpful! Thank you very much.
Excellent explanation. It was great.
Thank you. I know what to do now 😊
Thank you! Very helpful!
Saved my life😊
I plug my tv into my reciever with HDMI, reciever out to the ARC hdmi point, and nothing happens. I just want the sound to go to my reciever when im watching netflix. What am i doing wrong
I've got the same problem. Did you fix this?
Is the cable High speed labeled?
I gave up. Every day the TV HDMI gets into HDMI lock and doesn't recognize the receiver. Now I'm using an optical cable. I need to use two remotes now, but everything is working just fine.
Maybe the T.V. is not ARC capable?
did you ever find the solution im dealing with this right now
I will be using multiple speakers( surround sound) plus one base cannon what do you recommend vs the red and white analog cable instead?
HDMI ARC
@@Allabouthomeelectronics Thank you hooked it up it was what I needed everything sounds as it should!!!
Thank you for your videos
I just understand about AVR input and AVR out it's this all can work with tv pictures ?
Interesting video, thanks for posting. However I do have a query, the silver HDMI Out on the back of the amp, shouldn't that be HDMI In as it is taking in the signals from the TV?

I’m wondering where to hook up or to connect my 3.5mm jack stereo speaker with subwoofer to the back of avr
Very useful info✌Thank you✌
Thank you so much!
In theory, yes
