    You taught me more in the first 3 minutes of this video, than my teach did in an hour and a half!

    I have to say that your way of teaching the time step is the best! Thank you so much for your clear and concise instructions and the way you model the moves. Francine

    Thanks for posting! It's been years since I've taken tap, and I just needed a refresher of the timestep rhythm. =)

    THANK YOU! You're the first video I've seen that teaches first time step correctly! every other video I have seen teaches some variation of this. This time step is how I was taught...and my tap teacher was excellent...she studied back in the day..50s era.

    Well taught Eliasjohn. Your method makes it very clear. It'd be nice to see it up to speed to a tune. Thanks for posting on UA-cam, I'm trying to get my 12 year old son involved in Tapping, I don't see a lot of boys choosing this as an activity, and am hoping he catches the rhythm bug. I'll check your website. Great job. Everybody should learn it, Toddlers to Grave, make some noise.

    Hi Zazicake,
    Learning the difference between a flap and a shuffle is one of the most important things to learn in basic tap dance. The short answer is that the difference between them is that the second sound of a shuffle comes off the floor (aka 'is lifted up') while the second sound of a flap stays on the floor (aka 'takes the weight'). Any basic tap dance course should be able to clarify this for you, whether it be my DVDs or in a live class somewhere near where you live. hope that helps!

    Thank you so much for this video!!! This is brilliant! I am a dance newbie, but have always loved this rhythm. Your vid is clearly defined and easy to study, which I will be doing this week. :o) You ROCK!

    For a variation in emphasis you can start on the 3rd beat of the bar:
    3+4..1+2+
    And so emphasise the (back) step, which now falls on beat 1, instead of the hop (which now falls on beat 4)

    hey elisajohn
    Inhave to say your skills are quite impressive
    In scotland instead of sayng flap we say 'ball-change'
    So the full thing would be :
    Shuffle, hop, step, tap, ballchange, Shuffle, hop, step, tap, ball-change,shuffle, step, shuffle, step, shuffle ball-change
    I've already learned single, double and I'm now on triple its really hard
    from Callum 12 years old

    Hey, I'm a tap instructor too. So much fun! I always stress starting the shuffle from the back, but I see you have your foot forward. I learned from former Rockettes...so...once again, there are different ways to do the basics!

    Really, really, idiot proof. So much easier from the back and sidewards. I looked at some others but they didn't compare.
    Thanks so very much.

    If this is happening I recommend slowing down your tempo to a VERY slow pace. Force yourself to take the weight on the second sound of the flap. For now you may consider over-exaggerating your movements so that you get the proper weight changes of the footwork set in your body. After you get more comfortable with that, then you can focus on increasing the tempo and improving the look of the step. For now lock down the correct footwork and weight changes. Get that flap down on the floor! :)

    What's the difference between a flap and a shuffle? o.O?

    • @FandomTunes
      @FandomTunes 5 років тому +1

      Kat10652 when you flap you do a brush and a step. When you shuffle you do a brush and a spank.

    My name is Raj and I'm from Malaysia. I'm currently working on a song that requires a 9 sec tap dance sample, May I use a sample from one of your videos? I really hope that you'll allow me. I will credit you in the youtube descirption when we release the video. Hope to hear from you soon.

    A bit different than the way it's taught on your intermediate DVD. Not sure I like this way better. It's probably easier to learn, but the rhythm is a little different.

      Great observation, Heather! :) Yes there are many different styles of time steps, many more than even the ones I teach on my videos, and more being invented all the time! Thanks for the comment -- Eli

    "Learnt" is British English!! Mamma mia ..

  • @clevercloggs77
    @clevercloggs77 11 років тому

    I think you meant to say that learnt isn't a word, not work. It actually is a word. Maybe it isn't used on American English but it is used in British English, which is the originator of the English language. This person was using the present perfect tense which is "I have learnt" or the shortened version "I've learnt", so their sentence is correct. The only person who made an error in their posting (twice I might add) is you. Shame on you.
