I really love your videos. You are all about teaching. Most other UA-cam Teachers are more about just hearing themselves talk in some Grandiose tone. I like how you don't waste time and jump right into teaching. Thanks again!!

Thank you so very much for this lesson. It really helps because I tend to tense up on my shuffles. I am learning to dance later in life (I am 46) so this is a great help! Again, thank you!

Hi, I got this Dvd last december, I didn't know anything about tap and I think it's a very good start for beginners. Very well done and explained. I am 38 years old.
    Thanks a lot from Spain.
Can't wait for the next one

thanks, bro, i appreciate the kind words! I agree, I have had students who want to quit because their sounds don't sound the way they want them to, compared to mine or other students in the class. I just remind them that my sounds used to be pathetic when I first started. Another hint I give people is that they can loosen their taps with a screwdriver for better sounds. I use k-360s with extra work done by an old-school master shoe guy here in nyc.

Thanks for the kind words, prestosterone78. (btw I love your screen name!). You offer some great pointers, as well and hopefully people will incorporate your advice, as well. That's why I love tap, you can learn from so many different teachers. I urge students to take from as many instructors as they can, and incorporate what works for them. After a while they will know if it is good advice or not, but the important thing when first learning is to see all the various techniques. --Eli Newsom

I'm the guy in the video--hi! I wanted to chime in and answer some of your questions.
You want to keep your ankle super relaxed---you'll be able to go faster. Shuffles from your ankles create tension. tense muscles = slower shuffles. Proper shuffles = from your knee. They'll get smaller the better you become. If they're easy for you, consider yourself lucky! For many, shuffles are not easy. I certainly hope my video makes them easy to learn..! :)

Even though I've been tapping for some years now, I love to see the basics described as well as this clip shows! It would be great to have an entire dvd, with "all" the basic steps and turns...

thanks, SnapCrackleKABOOM! I appreciate the comments and good rating. We made this first DVD as an experiment about 3 years ago and are really glad we did. We are excited to know we are helping spread the joy of tap dance around. Our new DVD is almost ready and this one will be a cardio workout with tap shoes so people can get a good workout while tapping. Happy Holidays--- Eli Newsom

@DLZandorfRamash Thanks for the comment about my video! Glad you are starting to tap, and just to let you know that I took my first tap lesson at age 19 also! So we definitely have something in common there. :)
    Happy tapping!

Thanks for the video! I've been dancing since I was three, and I'm very good at ballet and jazz, but I never got around to learning tap even though I have a pair of tap shoes :)

his technique style is quite spot on. Over time for you to dance quicker and on time you'll need to shorten your shuffles anyway. Just make sure you use your shin muscle to control the movement of your foot and elongate the break when doing them slower.

My grandpa was very able at this.
He died at age 104 and still did tap dancing until he was 96 !!! (he had to have hip surgery done and couldn´t dance no more)

Hi there, thanks for the comment. (1) First off, I'm wearing a mic, so that is the main reason why it is louder. (2) In a tap dance video of course the taps need to be heard clearly, I'm sure you understand. (3) My shoes are high quality, and many beginning student models will not have the same quality sound, and (4) I am standing on a traditional 4x6 theater platform. It's a few inches off the ground. I explain all of this in the video. thanks

I do not recommend tensing up your feet or ankles, in fact I recommend you strive to have as relaxed ankles as possible. With the technique I teach, the leg does the work, though the leg is not tense either...everything stays relaxed and flowing, yes there is power involved, but it is not a _forced_ power. Hope this helps!

I like your tap combinations! I'm a tap teacher of over 16 years and have tapped myself longer than that!! I was wondering though, why you choose to describe shuffles as a "down up" motion rather than a "front back" Maybe your videos are geared more towards older students, but small children dont have the coordination to execute the shuffle as a down up motion but rather a slightly larger front back motion, with no heels. The step is the same of course, but I was curious...

Do you have to tense up your feet/ankle muscles, or do you just let the weight of your feet/shoes guide you? I.e. do you have to put a lot of power into every step?
