    In this video, we’re going to learn one of the most useful and universal combinations of steps in the history of tap dance, the traditional 'Time Step'.
    -- Note: This video is 100% relevant for 2024, even though it was published in 2018 --
    The ‘Time Step’ has a rich history, dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, they pop up everywhere: classes, auditions, shows and films.
    There are many different types and variations of the Time Step that have appeared throughout the years, and many of these variations are practiced today.
    The ’Traditional Time Step’ that I show you in this video is effectively the ‘Base Pattern’. Once you’ve got this pattern down, learning alternate time step variations becomes a relatively simple task.
    A COMMON TIME STEP VARIATION:
    (Especially for USA based viewers)
    One of the most common alternates involves substituting a Stomp (a flat foot, without weight), or a Stomp-Spank (Spank the toe straight after the Stomp) for the Shuffle on count 8.
    It is my hope that this video will give you a flying start toward discovering the Single, Double and Triple Time Steps. I hope it helps. If you enjoy it, please like and share this video, and tell me how you went in the comments! I’d love to hear from you!

    What really helps me is to get past the counts and just listen for the raw rhythm to internalize the musicality faster.
    BA-da-da, ba-dum-pa-DUM -- BA-da-da, ba-dum-pa-DUM -- it allows your brain to push the movements into the subconscious and focus on the other aspects of your performance.

    Hi, I’m 61 years old and I took tap lessons when I was 10 I think. But only a few lessons and it always remained a live for this dance and I always said the one day I would get me a pair of rap shows. I love this! I am a tap dancer myself and I’m very happy how you mentioned that there are other versions of these time steps, for example the single time step I know is: STOMP BRUSH HOP STEP FLAP STEP STOMP. And the double time step I know is: SHUFFLE HOP TOE STEP FLAP STEP SHUFFLE. The triple time step you showed however is the same as the one I know! Again, I love these videos!

    As an old hoofer myself, I'm loving this very clear breakdown of classic tap steps! I wonder if there's a dedicated channel to just time steps? The first one I learned was the Buck, which starts with a stomp, then a spank (leaving heel down from the stomp). I think it's the one that many non-tap entertainers imitate but without the spank. I teach my beginner students this one as their first, then adding to make a double, triple and double triple. Like you said, there are bazillions of variations, and that's what makes these so much fun!

    I did tap dancing for years, up until very recently, and I mainly watched this video because I had changed schools at one point and the timestep at the new school was completely different... The first one taught off a syllabus, and was exactly the same as this (except we also had a "basic" timestep without the shuffle and the double didn't have a flap, but a tap instead so it was only one extra beat) and now I'm happy to know that I was taught the usual way the first time 😂
    And I loved the tutorial, even though it felt strange to me listening to you describe the difference between a flap and a shuffle because for me, I already knew all that stuff by the time I learned timesteps, and I forgot there are other people out there who start with no knowledge at all 😂 (which is still great btw guys keep at it)

    As a 51 year old who learned and taught Latin and Modern Ballroom from age 8, and obviously being in complete awe of Fred Astaire, I'm finally learning tap.
    I'm blown away at how different, including your starting step is, we always started on or after 1.
    How did Fred seamlessly mash tap and modern together? I'm hoping to have the answer once I've learned the basics (again!) and can choreograph myself.
    Many thanks, subscribed!

    Hi there. This is great for my beginner tappers to practice. Thank you so much. A 'tap spring, toe hop' (do you all call that a 'flap, toe hop?) would be so useful. Keep those vids coming! x

      btw. I am working on a video for a top 5 hardest (top 5 hardest tap moves of all time)
      What moves do YOU think are really hard!?

    • @taptopiaofficial
      @taptopiaofficial  6 років тому

      Oooo...good question! I'll have a think about it. There's a few jumping tricks that come to mind, as well as that tricky 3 beat shuffle (not sure if it has a name!).

    • @CirqueitOfficial
      @CirqueitOfficial 6 років тому +2

      The 3 beat shuffle is actually one of my specialties. Its called a "Super-Shuffle" (not kidding)!
      I also mastered a 4 beat super-shuffle, and have created my own variation, a 5 beat super shuffle
      That last one (the 5 beat) is on the list :-)
      besides that I'm definitely putting the "Pullback+ wing combo alternated" as one of the hardest moves there are.
      And of course... Colin Dunne's quadrouple airheel clap that I've never seen ANYONE else but him do!! Yikes!!!
      p.s
      I teach my students the time step the same way you do. but after the 3rd, I add a double 3rd where BOTH feet do triplets
      and after that I do a 4th time step variation where we do the "supershuffle 4 beat". and ofcourse double 4 where BOTH feet do 4 beat super shuffles... its hard as heck!

      Yes - that's a very common variation 🙂 Effectively though, both are based around the same base-pattern. Hope the video helped 🙌

    I was wondering if you could help me with a question.
    Would you know if you are better with the basic flat full sole type shoes or better with the split soles shoes for clogging tap..
    I know split soles allow dancers more flexibility, but I don't know to much about the differences, so not sure whether they last as long either. Do you have any advice on this please.
    Excellent clear awesome demonstrations by the way. Really appreciate it and your time in doing it all!

    • @taptopiaofficial
      @taptopiaofficial  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Cathy! I recommend steering clear of split-soles. They just don't have the necessary support for tap dance, I've found. Here's a page of recommended resources (including shoes) which will hopefully give you some ideas howtotapdance.com/resources/ ☺️ All the best, and thanks for the kind comments 🙌

      You are awesome and are so helpful and everything you do is very professional. Your voice is quite therapeutic too I have to say, and wow what a great tap dancer!
      I had been wondering about the flooring aspect of things and so you have now also helped me with that too. So thanks ..you are are legend! :-)

    I’m very much a beginner and one of my friends wants to do the opening number to 42nd street for out senior cabaret (we are currently juniors). He’s really good so he’s been figuring out the choreography just by slowing down the video and figuring out the steps. For some strange reason the man thinks that I will be able to do it (we’ll see) so he told me to learn how to do single, double, and triple time steps, to start. I may or may not have laid on the floor in exhaustion. This is gonna take some time 😂😂
