On the road to a million. Great video guys!
Finally a comprehensive A7SIII review from Jordan and Chris. Nice first-time hair gel work.
Great job on the review video for the Sony A7S3! Your brevity and inclusion of all essential characteristics made it a joy to watch. I especially appreciate that the length of the video was just right, not too long like other reviews that can drag on. Your clear and concise presentation style really helped me understand the key features and benefits of this camera. Thanks for sharing your insights and expertise with us. Keep up the excellent work!
I watch those episodes on a 4K display.
This is by far the best quality I've seen recently on this channel.

Just paused the video and looking for this comment 😂

I'm dead LMAO
Olympus omd em5 mark iii review video was, I think, one of the first videos with that.
Used this camera for 3 projects and here is a quick comparison to A73 I'm sure many be interested in.When it comes to video A7S3 is huge step up. Footage is much more smoother and 10bit gives you very organic colours straight from camera with zero grading in post. The best settings working for me is HS 4k 10bit 420 50/60p.No matter what settings you use make sure to go with 10bit colours.Difference is huge.About time Sony offered 10bit in prosumer cameras. I have used this camera exclusively with Crane 2S gimbal and I'm happy with results. There is also option to use this camera handheld, make sure to switch of steady shot.Camera will record some data from gyroscope sensor and you can use that to steady your footage in post using Catalyst Browser. In short this is only usable if you don.t have gimbal handy but results are nowhere near as good as when using gimbal.Overall A7S3 is excellent video camera if someone doesn't have 10grand for Red or other expensive pro grade camera system.
"It's gross, so it's art." LOLOL
Im getting this camera as a primarily stills photographer. I hate large megapixels, anything more than 25MP weighs down the process and is frankly unnesasary. I photograph caves, hard action at any time in the day, camping, and a whole ton of other shit. Low light is everything to me, form factor, battery life is everything, and the video features are an added benifit. I carry around a micro 10" laptop to edit on, fuck big fancy cameras.
I want simple and well done.
My shooting style, I almost never crop, and do as little to the images in post as possible, it's just my style. So I really dont loose anything, but gain everything in low light and video. This will also be insane for night photography.
It's the most effortless camera for sure. Just performs! No excuses in any segment from high framerates, to incredible low light to AF performance. CLOSEST to the PERFECT CAMERA CROWN.

@@MonicaHolly143 Unlimited RAW buffer with redundancy at 10fps and 90%+ hit rate is pretty cool though. 12mp is fine for most of the jobs out there, especially since everything ends up on the Internet anyway.
@@JetBen555 if u think that 12mp is enough for a professional photographer then u clearly dont know what ur talking about......
That's like saying 1080p is enough becuz they will downscale it to 1080p anyways and most use phones anyways
@@MonicaHolly143 wait is 1080p not enough anymore ? Cause i still deliver my work in 1080p 😅😅

There's a lot of video that explains how that works
I think this might be my favorite camera channel.
The UA-cam compression on this video was brutal. The blocks in the blacks looked like Minecraft.
UA-cam and Instagram are the bottlenecks of our society.
Doesn’t the limitations imposed by the compression call the utility of a camera like this into question? If the primary audience is going to watch this on UA-cam and mobile devices, isn’t this camera and others like it overkill? I wonder about this almost every time I watch these kinds of reviews.
@@hisownfool1 it's overkill for many yes, but if you can afford then it delivers a lot, sharper 1080p, great AF, low light, selfie screen, good battery, unlimited recording, more fps 4k/hd, A7SIII is a video workhorse & does great for social media photography
@@hisownfool1 yes but no. I mean, although it's compressed by youtube it still looks waaay better than any other video recorded on smartphones or GoPros
@@mirrorlessny Thanks.
2 small inaccuracies:
1) at 2:48, you claim it's softer than the R5 and S1H, that's true at 24p, but not at 60p and especially not at 120p, because the other cameras have to resort to line skipping, which makes the image even a lot softer.
2) 10:16, you claim the camera doesn't support dial in the ISO or the white balance, but actually it does, but Final Cut Pro X doesn't support it yet with the A7siii.
wow great point 1) 👍 completely forgot about higher fps
S1H doesn't use line skipping at 4k/60. It uses a 1:1 readout the same as the SIII and quality is about the same (SIII has advantage at high ISOs of course).
@SwitchRich Yes but not line skipped.
@@FantabMedia how bad is the crop?

Great review...
Loved this review, thanks! Was just wondering how many stops did you over-expose by for s-log? Thanks!
The missing raw options are not an issue of the a7S III ... it's the host software you use to edit Prores RAW. Scratch already has options for white balance and ISO on Prores RAW. So it's up to Premiere or Final Cut to also implement this options.
5:03 I want to add something about the codec. On Final Cut Pro, XAVC HS files are easy to edit, as long as you pick 10bit 4:2:0. If you go for 10bit 4:2:2, both XAVC HS and XAVC S codecs are very slow. I've tested this on multiple generations of iMacs and MBPs; doesn't matter if the machine has the T2 chip (which claims to do HEVC decoding), the speed is always dependent on the processor.
Great video. After a few months of use..yup. its the run and gun king.
Very informative video about my favorite camera! Thank you!
One suggestion: when you’re comparing high ISO performance, don’t keep both your shutter speed and aperture static. Instead, first get a good exposure with the lowest ISO you can. Then as you raise the ISO, keep the SAME overall exposure by compensating with shutter speed or aperture. That way, we can see a difference in noise in the shadows. Simply making a dark image progressively brighter by boosting ISO (see 10:36) doesn’t show us much about noise performance. Thank you for considering this suggestion.
great video - thank you!
So excited to see you guys review the Canon C70, even though there's a price gap I would love to see how this camera competes with it.
The footage looks so good. Wasn't going to upgrade from Gh5/GH5s, but I think I have to now
a giant upgrade 💪 perfect time to switch to Sony, they finally made new touch menu, A7SIII satisfies so many needs at same time like vlogging, color editing possibilities & even 4k slow motion

Sony is hitting the nail on the head. The future is not in photo, but in video capabilities in a small body.
This camera was not designed with the average photographer in mind, rather with the semi professional videographer in mind.
And imo that's exactly the right direction they are heading.
Now all they need to make is the A7iv, with the perfect balance between powerful photos, and good enough low-light video.
Although I think Sony's gonna wait till Canon comes out with something new/adventurous before taking a dump on them with the A7iv.
@@professionalpotato4764 which Sony camera can do 8K? And if you say no one needs 8K then you’re just another Sony fanboy making excuses.
@@Davitor1 Nobody needs 8k. Does Arri shoot 8k? You either have really bad composition skills or you're working on a project worth hundreds of thousands or millions. Composition can be learned. High budget filmmaking is only done by the elites. 90% of us will never be able to be part of it. Majority of media consumption is on phones or laptops. The number of people who own 8k monitors are even fewer than those with 4k monitors.
I'm no fanboy. I use whatever works. I hate Sony because they clearly have zero UI/UX designers. I like Canon because it's the most user friendly. I like Nikon because it has better dynamic range than Canon. If I had unlimited money, I would switch systems every single day or hour depending on the job. The camera is just a tool. Stop assuming someone is in another "faction" just because their opinions and needs don't align with yours. The world doesn't revolve around you. Get over yourself.
@@Davitor1 And nobody brings toys to a real shoot. Any camera that overheats is not considered pro-grade. The R5 and 6 take amazing stills. But even if you gave it to me for free with every single RF lens, I still wouldn't use it for a video shoot.
@@professionalpotato4764 no professional uses a 12mp camera made in Thailand. With menus of the 1980’s. You’re just another scrub UA-camr.
I feel old, proxy workflows used to be normal yet now it seems to be the exception ?
cool looking camera, any chance of how well it handles old lens ? some of the older Sony cameras had trouble thanks to aggressive filters in front of the sensor.
Accurate points Chris.
I've had very good success at editing XAVC HS footage if you use 420 vs 422. I've tested the heck out of both 420 and 422 and can't for the life of me detect any meaningful difference in color rendering even with blue sky using SLOG3. The bottom line is I have been shooting everything in XAVC HS 420 with the A7SIII and it edits beautifully on a 3-year old iMac using Davinci Resolve and I don't think I am missing anything by using 420.
For moviemaking, I find the slight softness at 4K a plus. Less need to use a gaussian blur in post.
@Mat Gleeson thank you for pointing this out guys
But the a7s III does not produce soft images. A tiffen black pro mist 1/8 would come in handy.
@@JonPais OK, but looking at the test samples in this review, they are softer than the 8K/6K oversampled images.
@@terranborn56 yea a7siii is softer, but that's only at 24fps 4k right? 4k60+ fps things even out? if im not mistaking S1H has apsc crop at 4k60 while R5 line skips at 4k60/120
@@mirrorlessny Yes, 4K 24p for movie making, not reality shows or travel videos.

Thanks Jordan for the honest review. To summarize, Sony a7siii is an excellent run & gun video camera but for serious short film maker, Panasonic S1h or perhaps the soon-to-be-released FX6 will be a better choice for independent filmmakers. I am waiting for FX6 and will decide between S1h and FX6 or maybe Sony a7siii. For me, it is about the colour science. If FX6 offer Venice colour science with the capability of Sony a7siii, I will buy it for sure.

That Isaac cosplay was great!

Couldn't you guys find something where Slog-3 actually makes sense to shoot with? These are fairly low demanding shots where custom flat profile is more than enough. You need to do some real estate indoor work and capture those actual 13 stops of dynamic range to make sense to shoot with Slog-3. Otherwise its more work than it should be, with no real benefits.
Definitely, it was rather disappointing there were no serious scenes to test the Slog-3
@@Jthe5th Yup.
I am surprised you didn’t mention the dual ISO at 12800, which is incredibly useful. The static AF problem is annoying though, because most of the time I want to be static, but also have the freedom to move spontaneously (maybe take a few stops forward or lean forward when sitting). Seems only to affect S-Log, though.
that’s why it’s best run n gun, not stand still n gun. 😅

a7siii lowlight is the best reason for me that make me love it. with f1.4 wide angle lens it'll be a nice astrophotography camera.
The low light part looked terrible. Watch again at 10:42, he looks like a chocolate fondue.
@@TaipeiGeek did you even see how under exposed it was ? That would never happen in real client's work
You'll need higher mp count for astro. The problem with 12mp sensors is that the noise will be rendered in larger spots, vs finer grain on higher mp sensors.
Also, the way lowlight is handled for video and photos are different. Videos are essentially jpegs stuffed into a video container, after applying some in camera denoise and other functions. Photo raws are different, and if you apply the same denoise that aggressively, I think you'll miss quite a few stars.
@@TaipeiGeek When the beginer finally finds out that astrophotography uses long exposures so you wont actually see the "fondue" like in the video

I’ve upgraded to the Sony a7s3 and love it. But for a video camera I don’t know why they don’t have shutter angle instead of shutter speed. If Sony would ad waveforms, shutter angle and an audio safety track recorded 20db lower then this would be the perfect camera for me.
I just ordered three mainly for their autofocus as I sometimes shoot events where I have to man all three cameras. If I film people sat down and use S cinetone am I likely to have issues? This is the first video I saw mention this. Has me a bit worried.

Probably one of the best Sony camera ever
@4:29 pg 30 of the a7s iii manual shows that an AF-S mode is available?
Lawd, that image looks amazing.
Good 4K comparisons with R5 & S1H 2:43 , also thanks for HD quality samples 6:18 . Looks like A7SIII makes a smart compromise by bringing reliable recording, higher fps & better low light quality while sacrificing oversampling sharpness which is visible when cropping 2:43 (you can see it if you watch this video in 4K on larger displays like pc monitors/laptops/tv)
As someone else commented, that's only for 24 fps. At higher frame rates, the other cameras are softer than the Sony due to line skipping.
@@carlkim2577 The S1H doesn't use line skipping, it uses a 1:1 pixel readout for 4k/60 and quality is about the same as the SIII in those modes. Agreed on the R5 though; it's high-speed 4k is definitely worse than Sony's.
@@FantabMedia but what about 4k 120? Or 180?
@@carlkim2577 Doesn't do 4k 120 mate. 180 is line skipped but it is (and 240) on the SIII too. I think the SIII 240 will be better quality than the 180 of the S1H although it's not that bad if you have loads of light. I'm still interested in an SIII, it's got so many features.
@Kris Smith thx guys for S1H/R5 24fps clarification & S1H info apsc4k60 crop/180hd line skipping, you are right a7siii is line skipping at 240fps thankfully 4k120 quality is superb & looks like 4k60/120hd is full sensor readout 👍 it's awesome how a7siii is stuffed with so many important & useful features
For run and gun videography, I’d argue a video camera like the xf705 or Sony/Pana versions would be the best video cameras out there 😉
Did you say raw with full adjustability is coming with a firmware update on the Atomos?
I prefer the hair flying in the wind, Jordan. Doesn't look like brick hair.
witch lens do you recommend for this camera?
400mm 2.8
For what use? This is a video-centric camera, and video tends to be shot at wide angles. The Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 is a great all-around choice for photo and video, and it's not crazy expensive. The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 is a bit cheaper, but I think you will want that extra bit on the wide end if you're shooting a lot of video.
Sony makes a really nice 28-135mm Power Zoom f4 broadcast-type lens if you're into manual focus and/or a servo for smooth, motorized zooming in video, but that lens can get pretty expensive. If you don't know why you need that lens, it's probably not for you. If you're into fast prime lenses, the Sony 24mm f1.4 is a solid choice as well to pair with the a7S III, and it could make up for the shortcomings of the 28-135mm f4 PZ or the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 on the wide end.
The a7S III is not a camera I would want for sports and wildlife. It's a low-light video and nighttime street photography camera. The low-resolution sensor doesn't give much latitude for cropping if you don't have a long, enormous telephoto lens. You want the a1, a7 III, or a9 II for that. Even the a7R III and IV are better choices for that because you can crop in so much, although those might make more sense for landscape and portrait photographers. So I wouldn't look much into the telephoto range for the a7S III.
I disagree with Jon about the 400mm f2.8 being a good pairing for this camera, but perhaps he was kidding. The a7S III is a niche camera primarily aimed at videographers.
shooting stills the numbers of shots can be determined thus evaluating how much the camera was used, but can video usage can be found when buying second hand?
Now just need to find a reason to upgrade from a7 iii and the Tamron 28-75 :)

In my honest opinion, this is not the best run and gun camera available today. The best run and gun camera available today differs for everybody. Mostly due to budget and usage. Someone who sits in front of his camera all the time, has different needs than someone behind the camera. Someone who's looking for a good hybrid camera needs a different camera than someone who only shoots video. The video capabilities of the Sony A7Siii are great, there's no denying that but the photo capabilities are underwhelmed due to its 12mp camera. The Fujifilm X-T4 is claimed to be one of the best hybrid cameras but it's not a full frame camera (some find that important) and overheats when shooting 4k/60fps (and with 4k/24p it'll turn off eventually ;-)). The Panasonic GH5 has awesome color science and stabilisation, but absolutely sucks when it comes to autofocus (trust me I know, I own one and want to throw it to a wall sometimes).
TLDR: Find your budget, determine your needs, compare and decide for YOUR NEEDS.
Hopefully the fuji xh2 comes soon. Its gonna be a beast!
I just need a lovechild between Panasonic and Sony. Gimme that delicious 24mp sensor with dual native ISO, 10fps burst, waveforms, vectorscopes, hybrid AF...
Panny boy has got so many nice features and I'm keen on the S1/S5, but I'm waiting to see what Sony gives us in the A7iv before deciding which system to invest for full frame.
Though if the S1/S5 can't focus on black cats or a white flower cos of the lack of contrast, I'll throw it at a wall too.
Fuji's way too expensive, I could build a similar kit of same focal lengths for the same price with A7iii.
I think I'll prolly pick up a G9 soon. 10 bit, IBIS, excellent burst speeds, no overheating, able to come in with me to the shower... has nearly everything I need.
@@professionalpotato4764 If you feel that AF is important, then forget about Panasonic completely. Saw a great example of the Panasonic S5 footage from Sara Dietschy. Not my favorite UA-camr but since she was using 3 cameras (Sony A7siii, Canon R5 and Panasonic S5) it was an excellent showcase on why not to buy the S5. The hunting was terrible, even worse than Panasonic. I'm so sick of my GH5 due to that, that I can hardly hold out till Black Friday before I buy something else. I'm seriously leaning towards the Sony A7iii and just putting my phone on top of it as a "monitor" lol or to buy the Sony A7C (even though it's far too expensive for what you get atm.)
@@RicoResolves True.. AF is important to me. At the same time, I kinda want a system that has robust weather sealing, and Panasonic seems to be one of the best. Fuji's not too bad too I think, but not sure if it'll survive shooting in the rain for an hour. Sony's performance is great, but I'm not sure I can trust its sealing.
@@professionalpotato4764 well, if Sony claims its weather sealed and you take it out in the rain and it breaks, that would fall under warranty I guess.

Love your reviews. I think they outshine just about everybody else. But bear in mind that English does that with the 'i' sound, uniquely among European languages. There's even a recognized English pronunciation of Latin, which features that sound prominently. Nothing to apologize for, it's been that way forever. Shakespeare would have pronounced it Neyekon not Neekon.
Nah, if I had to choose, I'd say the best run and gun camera was the Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk VI. It carried one obliquely mounted Williamson F24 with a 14in focal length, which could face to the left or right, and two vertically mounted F24's, one 5 inch and one 14 inch. Note the F4 5". These guys were flying low and in easy reach of whatever could be thrown at them. So these stripped out speed machines were fitted with eight .303in Browning machine guns for a bit of punch. Something that makes you think a bit is one of the pre-requisites stipulated by RAF Reconnaissance for their flying tripods. The plane must be able to provide a stable platform even when shot full of holes.
Nice review. However, I don’t think the comment about the EVF’s resolution is accurate. The quality / resolution of the EVF in live viewing is indeed inferior to that in playback but only in stills mode. In movie mode the resolution is identical in viewing and in playback. Perhaps you shoot video while being in stills mode or maybe it’s something that has changed with a firmware update since this review? I still find it annoying as I’d love to take advantage of this great EVF when takings stills too.
looking forward to your review of the new nikons z mk 2! chears! and dont forget the gel! :)
So whats the best FF body for stills and occasional video?

no mention of dual native ISO??
Long-time fan of TCS and Chris/Jordan, but I can't help but wonder if Jordan thinks of Sony like a son. His critiques are so merciful. The tone is just very different from when he reviews Canon cameras whether he realizes it or not. He reviews cameras for videographers way more than the causal hybrid shooter, which he has every right to do. I just can't stand the AWB and IBIS issues with my A73 and this camera seems like it's only marginally better for casual shooters.
Maybe because these concerns are marginal and overall the camera is great? As a Sony user I don't use AWB for video (why would I?) and use a gimbal or shoulder rig in addition to IBIS.
I'm guessing a 92% gold award for a7s3
"Killer boots, man."
We got a shot of Jordan in a fetal position again. The legend continues 😆
I still prefer the R5 for the all around better rounded features. Sony really up their game with the S3.
@Kalifay G 12 mp. for photography. LOL 😝 No thanks
@Kalifay G a proper video camera would have internal NDs and better sound I/O. Like the C70, FX6, etc...The A7Siii is just like the R5 but with only 12MP.
Softness wise, the A7siii is a lot softer than I expected for 4K. I have a theory and its to do with aggressive noise reduction taking out fine detail. Also a weird theory but I think Phase Detect AF points on sensors somehow reduce fine detail as well, but don't quote me on that.
Look up the ZCam E2-M4 or the BMPCC4K. 10MP sensors shooting 4K but it has a lot more detail than the A7siii. Hell, I have an old Blackmagic Production 4K (super35 global shutter) that looks more detailed, even off youtube comparing downloaded footage. I think the heavy noise reduction is hurting there. Its hard to describe but the footage looks "paper thin" whereas the BMPCC4K/ZCam E2-M4 have a very detailed but organic and filmic look.
I have a theory too. It is not soft at all. Footage from a7s III is thicc. You don’t have a clue buddy.
@@JonPais I'm not the only one who said this, there are others who concurred as well on the A7siii facebook group. If you read you'll see I wrote softer than expected for 4K. Why does something like the Sony FS7, another 4K camera, outressolve the A7siii in my experience? Probably due to the lack of exteme noise reduction.
Sharpness and detail are 2 different things, the A7siii is sharp for sure but it's lacking a little bit of detail that I expected, which makes it not have its organic feel.
@@alihammad6318 define organic. lol I avoid fb groups. image of a7s iii is beautiful.
@@JonPais I've never denied that it's beautiful haha, it looks stunning. It's so hard to put your finger on, but its missing just the tiniest amount of "sauce" that would make it worlds more impressive.
Take for example the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K. it's got a resolution of 2.5K but that resolves a shit ton of detail, and even without sharpening you can see that.
@@JonPais definition of organic is having lots of detail without being oversharpened. A lot of mirrorless cameras have in-camera sharpening that cannot be turned off, and it make footage look like video more than film. Whereas it actually looks better without any extra sharpening and it's just pure detail from the sensor
