You're absolutely right! Even if I'll realistically never code my own fangame, I love creating my own Pokemon and revamping existing mechanics like types and the damage formula
yoo i drew the reuniclus at 9:51 !! thank you sm for featuring my stuff, love and respect your work so much as another artist who loves turning science concepts into character designs :) using s/m/l cones to make different forms is so cool
I love that you based them on different parts of the cell! My favorite has to be Regenerator, but all of them are fantastic. I also love how you did the shading.
@@prof.reuniclus21 thanks so much!! love the username lol, reuniclus is so underrated. i do biology research so i was rly excited to apply my knowledge from the field into these designs!! the guy whose research i based the regenerator form on actually saw my post and he thought it was cool, i think i peaked haha
@@Proxentauri That’s so cool!! Biology is such an underrated subject honestly, most people skip right to ecology instead and pretend that it’s all biology has to offer. There are so many ways to gather empirical data, and it also helps us understand ourselves. Having someone acknowledge you when you cite them has always been kind of my dream, lol.
Those are my Woopers at 8:47!! It’s great hearing your intentions behind the idea, cause’ that’s the sort of vibe I got from it too- everyone made awesome designs and there are still really cool ones I’m seeing posted every now and then, I can’t wait to see more!
This is something I thought about a LOT when I was 9 years old. I always wanted to try designing them myself, but I could never really draw anything that suited my brain's satisfaction since I wanted immediate results alongside just not being able to draw very well lol. I was very surprised to see your tweet and also see it start a new trend (and even seeing a friend of mine blow up).
The Pokémon Adventures/Pokemon Special manga did something to this effect in the Red/Blue/Yellow chapters with Arbok. Different patterns on its hood meant that each Arbok had different abilities - and ultimately, hiding those patterns negated the ability to use the ability.
Honestly with how much this was getting posted in a server I was in, I was surprised at first there wasn’t a video being recommended to me about it. Knowing you were the one to start this is quite cool though.
This Trend was a fun concept to look at my timeline these past few weeks, as well as partake in. Thank you so much for coming up with this idea, and hope you're game becomes a reality one day.
A good way to make this work ingame while still preserving the base desighn would be to have them transform when the ability activates. Like for examples gallade gets hit with a dark type move and as the stets raise he changes form.
9:27 Thank you for featuring my Feraligatr forms! I had a lot of fun making ability forms for both Feraligatr and Porygon Z. All the forms for Chromato look amazing!
I think ability "stances" could be really cool and more realistic. SV is already experimenting with multiple stances (out of battle, battle, flying, swimming, etc). For example a Raichu with Static would be more curled up and defensive looking, while one with Lightning Rod would be more active with its tail sticking up.
The idea of pokemon being slightly different based on which ability they have is a cool idea. It would invite some nice creativity to their designs though it could come with a cost regarding competitive battles. Players can easily determine what abilities the opponents' pokemon have by recognizing their altered appearance, removing some surprise tactics. Regardless, this is a concept that I wish was explored more.
this was such a fun trend!! i really loved seeing all the art that stemmed from it and it's great to see a lot of it compiled in one place too! good luck on your own game! i'm sure itll be beyond awesome with how intentional you are with your design choices and research :)
I like the idea of the different ability forms having ~subtle design differents, like how animals irl aren't all identical and they have slight variations
Chromato and Slothsom are probably my favorite Stemas so far. I immediately fell in love with both, and definitely look forward to using them in the game when it comes out.
Actual good fan designs! You love to see it. Given the sheer dedication to fan projects I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if romhacks started doing this. Incidentally, I saw a _Palworld_ mod attempting this sort of thing the other day. Although it basically amounted to recolors, given the way the game handles its passive skill pool (too many potential combos!)
Omfg, yes, I would love this to be their next gimick! Having variant designs based on ability would be amazing. I'd literally try for a living dex of every design. XD
Just looking at the alt forms montage at the end, if the official games had these forms my team would probably look waaaay different, that intimidate arcanine or technician scizor would just have to be added, so much cool art
I love the designs and concepts you come up with every video!! I also like how you mentioned colorblindness, whenever people talk about cones I don't hear them bring it up much. As a colorblind artist, I just think it's a fun, albeit frustrating, bit of differences in humans :33
I’m hella interested in this because this is such a unique idea and I plan on using it in my own region. I just need to build up the motivation to work on it :/
I absolutely love this, I get that it won't ever happen because it would be hell for the designers, but I love the idea of it being an anime/manga exclusive I'm playing a pokemon ttrpg right now, imma show them this so we can apply it to our pokemon to make them more unique and special for us
One way i could viably see this implemented in-game: new generational gimmick is a special type of ability patch that gives certain mons new (and more powerful) abilities. Mons who change their ability in this way are granted new ability forms. These abilities will typically be better than anything else the mon has, but the drawback is that your opponent will know about it immediately
Yeah this'll never be in the game but the fact that no one has thought of this idea before is honestly incredible considering how fun of an concept it is
This is something that is both cool, but at the same time, a completely bad change. Here's a couple reasons: 1- An entire bloat of new designs: Now, as cool as this concept is, we have to remember a little something... abilities didn't exist in Generations 1 and 2. This essentially means redesigning a lot of the Pokémon to have more variants. This isn't like when they gave over gender differences, where the changes were small, and not all Pokémon received them. 2- There isn't just one species: There's something else this causes, and that's having a lot of different variants mixed on one Pokémon. Things like people being split on "oh i love arbok", "which variant", "shed skin", "dude that looks like, awful, intimidate arbok is clearly the best." 3- Predictability: By doing this, you give away what your strategy is in multiple Pokémon. As an example, pick Clodsire. You never know if Clodsire is gonna run Water Absorb or Unaware. But doing this, the design clearly gives away what they're doing. The only predictions are in the movesets, but it's not as game changing as having to battle Clodsire on what strat it is, besides analyzing the team composition. Or Urshifu, on team preview alone, you don't know if it's Single or Rapid Strike. The prediction becomes a thousand times easier, and it makes competitive Pokémon less of a mind reading game than it already is. Which in my opinion, hurts multiplayer battles, because there's less gambles and brainpower required on winning a game. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
Its a great idea. But you hit the nail on the head about the art and how much work itd be to make 1-3 extra variants for each mon. And we know how little time Gamefreak gets to make its pokemon games typically
Imagine if nature influenced the sprite/model appearance as well. I always imagine some variations in the mon's posture or face depending on which nature it has
I like how with all the submission , hyper cutter, swift swim and intimidate were basically guaranteed to be banger designs Oh and unaware too, those ones all look adorable and I wanna give them hugs
i wouldve wanted my art here but i read the post where you asked for permission too late... oops i still rly enjoyed making alternate designs for magnezone!!! thx for making such a great idea for alternate pokemon forms!!
holy crap, I had a very similar idea recently while looking at slowpokes in Azalea in johto redrawn. I thought it would be cool to have different designs to express various personalities in individual pokemon, though I went with natures, your idea of basing them off abilities is far more realistic lol
4:26 I understand what you mean. It would be better if mons got their ability forms in their final evolution. Then for regional evolutions or cross-gen evolutions, that would be a different case. Take Piloswine to Mamoswine: in Gen 3, Piloswine would have ability forms, but in Gen 4, the ability forms of Piloswine would converge to a base form until it gains its evolution into Mamoswine, which would Ability forms from that generation onward. That could make sense, right?
