      Yeah, this is why it can sometimes be a good idea to just pick a pokemon you like and play it come hell or high water in OU on Showdown
      Even really good players only have so much mental bandwidth, so they tend to specifically build and train to handle common threats and just kinda intuit what other pokemon are all about. There are tons of less popular mons whose main strength ends up being "Who the hell expects their team to need to counter Dragalge" and if you build a team to capitalize on that you can get some really fun games

      @TheRedSmarty 6 місяців тому +21

      @@shadenkeltner8067 In Trick Room, Speed stats are subtracted from 10,000 to reverse them. After this, for technical reasons, they're taken modulo 8192 (which in this case, just means subtracting 8192 if the input is at or above it). This doesn't normally change the order since the Speed of basically any Pokémon causes all of them to be lowered by the same 8192.
      But Regieleki has such a high base Speed stat that, with some modifiers, it's reasonably possible to get it above 1808, which is high enough that 10,000 minus it is less than 8192, so the Speed value remains in the 8000s while everything else is much closer to 0, letting it still outspeed.

    What’s really interesting is how these things are integrated into other parts of the franchise, such as the TCG, side games, or the anime. In the case of the TCG, it tends to make them appear less often (Arceus), or have them deviate from their game versions (Wobbuffet).

    This will probably not happen but can you do an evolutionary line based of Dopamine and Epinephrine (aka adrenaline) . Dropert is such a cool concept, I love the idea of a crazy wall that has one obvious weakness, however I feel like it is busted. I know using crits as the weakness is to differentiate it from something like chansey's lack of defense, but crits are way too uncommon to have a weakness to (in pokemon at least, I don't know if crits would work differently in Stema). Every pokemon is "weak" to crits, if a move crits then that pokemon basically dies anyway, and crits already ignore all stat changes. You might get a crit once per match on average, so having to fish for one to break through dropert sucks. Chansey has amazing hp and a decent special defense stat, but it is balanced by being super weak to physical attacks and not having the attacking stats to deal any damage. Shuckle has ridiculous defense and special defense stats, but is balanced by having absolutely nothing in all of it's other stats, including hp. Looking at dropert's stats, it looks like it has high special defense, good speed, decent attack and special attack, and relatively low hp and defense, but with it's ability that defense stat is probably more than even Shuckle. And to anyone thinking it's defense won't be that bad because it has a low base stat, Azumarill has the ability huge power, which doubles it's attack stat, and it only has 50 base attack. Resilient is effectively huge power x2 but it buffs defense. Also, Shuckle only has 20 base hp and can still tank hits, so the low hp doesn't matter that much either. Dropert is an basically an automatic switch out to any physical attacker other than those with guaranteed crit moves, and is still relatively specially defensive against special attackers. It also has the ability to deal damage to both specially and physically defensive opponents because it is a mixed attacker. I absolutely love the concept, but I think it would need some base stat changes or an ability rework to make moves more likely to crit against it or something, otherwise it would be the best "theoretical pokemon" ever created.

    For your droplet pokemon; I would say just give the pokemon ridiculous defenses in their base stats BUT give it a balancing ability where critical hits are 2x more common into it (or 5x, whichever works better for balance). If there was any ability swapping pokemon in the future, that could be fun to play with

    • @nosysprat6170
      @nosysprat6170 6 місяців тому +22

      This is a good idea, but the ability should rather increase the crit damage received (like a 5-10x multiplier instead of 2x). If it has a defense of like 500, a normal critical hit still would do very little damage and you would need multiple crits. And the idea of the prince ruperts drop Pokémon is that it will shatter in one massive hit, and not in a few decently strong ones.

    I love that you mentioned Regieleki outspeeding scarfed speedsters, but I think my favourite way to show just how fast Regieleki is is that if you were to max out its speed and then give it a choice scarf, it would outspeed Trick Room, the move that reverses how speed affects turn order for several turns. It would literally become so fast that the game cannot comprehend how fast it is and it would simply be unaffected by the condition.

    This was a super interesting video. I love the overview you did during the first half of the video defining the breadth of what a gimmick can be. The gimmicks that I enjoy the most are ones that not only effect the playstyle of a single Pokemon, but effect how the entire team is built around it and flesh out the individual Pokemon outside of the standard sweeper, tank and support roles. Trick Room and Perish Song are decent examples of this, but both are incredibly limited in their direct support leading to surprisingly identical teams despite the gimmick's potential. Weather teams have the exact opposite problem where they have a ton of support, but only moderate impact on the teambuilding process, since a Swift Swim Sweeper or a Rain Dish Tank don't play much different from your standard sweepers and tanks.
    My favorite examples of gimmick teams are Baton Pass and paraflinch. Both have a major effect on how the team is built and that effect causes many Pokemon to drastically change their role beyond what a typical competitive team would look like. Sure, you still have sweepers, tanks and supports, but in these teams, most of them have drastically different goals to what they would have normally. A sweeper on a paraflinch team is less concerned about how much raw damage it can output and more about just how much of the roster they can outspeed, so speed becomes slightly more important than offense. The rest of the team is focused around that speed control through Sticky Web/Paralysis. Baton pass is even more specialized with members focused around mitigating counterplay like magic bounce and Suction cups.
    There are even some signature abilities that would be incredible as team basis if only they were given to a few more Pokemon. Galarian Slowbro's Quick Draw ability drastically changes how it's built as a sweeper and greatly improves the viability of Quick Claw. Abilities like Emergency Exit and Innards Out could drastically change how a team functions if they were given to a Pokemon with the right stats or moveset and that's not even touching on the variety of Toxic Spread support that we got in gen 9 that would be really interesting if one of the most popular Pokemon wasn't immune to all of it

    One thing I love about draft is that it makes "gimmicks" way more viable. A lot of times the reason gimmick mons don't work in ladder is because they get countered by knowing what to expect, or just by specific common enough mons. In draft, you can map out how good a particular gimmick is into the enemy team, and it's usually stronger due to the lower average power level of each team. Even though your opponent can plan for it, you're forcing them to bring specific things to deal with it, and sometimes you know they don't have a great option for it.
    My personal favorite is Ambipom. Ambipom's Fake Out is basically just a +3 regular attack that also flinches. Technician + STAB + a decent attack stat means against a lot of very fast, frail threats, you're dealing 70% in one fake out. It opens up specific win cons or situational bail outs against fully setup mons (like Dragon Dancers or other mons who boost speed in some way) just by sacking other mons and continually bringing it in. Once you're confident on which other mons you need to win a game at that point, you can sacrifice one or two in order to force your opponent to sack their setup mon, or just swap out and lose the entire setup. Granted, there are reasons Ambipom isn't even OU. But it's definitely a mon that can do a ton of work against people who aren't prepared to deal with what it does and don't respect its speed and power.

    Has anyone ever talked about the cute lineless style of the Pokemon he draws?

  • @GroundThing
    @GroundThing 6 місяців тому +3

    I would honestly argue the Ghastly line was a gimmick pokemon in Gen I, being immune to normal moves, and many pokemon were stuck with normal moves if they wanted a physical option to target its weaker defense (albeit, this mostly applies to a playthrough of the game than competitive, since gen I was primarily designed with single-player in mind). the Dratini line could arguably be considered a gimmick too, for being strong against the starter types, its final form being stronger than most pokemon you'd have on your team, but having a crippling weakness to Ice, though this again feels more like Boss design, since that line feels primarily more like it exists to make Lance tough. Yes, this is entirely down to their typings, but they were the only evolutionary lines for their types for a reason, and from gen I design sensibilities it feels more like the types were made in service to those pokemon's specific gimmicks, in a way they would eventually make for gimmicky abilities.

    A cool gimmick you can do is that instead of capturing your Fakemon, what if instead you gather ingredients to make your own? Like you combine elements for the periodic table as well as monster drops like pieces of fur or scale or feathers or other stuff like that and you're basically mix the ingredients together like you doing chemistry and you end up creating one of the many Fakemon in your region ... maybe to prevent players from getting super strong and game Fakemon too early maybe you could wall them behind your players level until they are strong enough to make them or maybe have them require ingredients that can only be found closer to the end game

    I could imagine if Dropert was a real Pokemon, it could be paired up with a Gardevoir that knows Lucky Chant, a move that prevents the opposing party from landing any critical hits for the next 5 turns and that could be REALLY broken in competitive play, especially if Dropert could also use Body Press.

    Another thing about gimmicky Pokémon is how weird they are even for their standards.
    For example to this day Manaphy is the only mythical Pokémon that can reproduce, and to makes things even odd the only lay Phione eggs.
    No other Pokémon does that.

      @@marcoasturias8520 In scarlet/violet, you can see small shining specks and Poke balls scattered throughout the areas. Normal/red glowing Poke balls give you various items, such as EXP candy or boosts. Yellow/Yellow-turquoise glowing balls give you TMs. The shining specks give you TM materials and sometimes feathers. Feathers can be either held or given to pokemon to boost certain stats.

    I really want to see someone try to make a pokemon fan remake where the battles with the Important trainer characters from the rivals, gym leaders, team grunts, and lets throw in the Totem and Titan pokemon also. Where the battles are all real time. I already have ideas on how the moves, abilities, and some (not all) of the items could be modified to work in such a format which gives each pokemon unique realtime playstyles. Like how the range/aoe of a certain move two different species share could be completely different similar to how in the tales of series when you have two different characters with the same arte it can vary greatly on how the move is executed because of the characters personality, battle style, and signature weapon. You can have one character with gauntlets, another with twin swords and another with an arm mounted blad who share just one Arte and they all perform it very differently. Do that with pokemon and some of their moves and you will always have a unique battle. The move Ember would be a good place to start as if the pokemon regulates the heat in their bodies through a specific body part or have a visible flame the embers will shoot out accordingly. Torchic's downy feathers could fluff up as the embers escape from beneath turning the move from a projectile move into a crowd control move. Perfect if a pokemon tries to take advantage of a blindspot or attacks from behind. Where as Cyndaquil could use the Same move but it effects a much smaller area above Cyndaquil which would be perfect against Flying types, pokemon with the ability Levitate, or Pokemon with the move Magnet Rise as Cyndaquil's Embers would shoot out from the flames on its back when ignited.
    Also imagining how a pokémon's stat's and animations work when a signature item they hold is not being held would be fascinating to see. Like Farfetch'd without its Leek, or Flabébé without its fairy flower. Maybe it locks certain moves from being used which limits their potential but could add a decent challenge to those who like torturing themselves. This does mean that they would be forced to stick with the item that they are most recognized for if you want to get the most out of them but it makes finding the damn bastards with the actual item they are know to have easier to find. 5% chance for a wild farfetch'd to hold a leek? I do not care who you are but unless the model says otherwise that is absolute bullcrap. Now i am curious about how pokemon with each hold item would look like if they could be used to help find certain items you want. Like a reaper cloth or deep sea scales. Just imagining Duskull and Dusclops having the cloth like material on their bodies look like the reaper cloth or clamperls pearl having shimmery pink scales is actually getting my creative fanart juices pumping. To my art desk!

    Still love to sweep with Shuckle power trick and baton pass though. Just have every member of your team baton pass to each other and use stat increase moves, then baton pass to Shuckle, use power trick to turn his massive defense (the highest in the game) into the now highest attack stat in the game PLUS stat boosts, and show the world why you shouldn’t fuckle with shuckle

    I think in general, people’s definition of gimmick pokemon is so broad that almost every pokémon is a gimmick pokemon in one way or another. Bulbapedia agrees, which is why they don’t have a page of gimmick pokemon anymore.
    My definition of gimmick pokémon is much more narrow: it’s a pokémon that primarily exists to show off a new hardware or software feature.
    Some examples:
    - the entire Eevee line exists to showcase new evolution methods and new types, among other things (like time system and Pokémon-Amie)
    - Chatot showcases the microphone
    - Plusle and Minun promote double battles
    - Malamar highlights the new gyroscope
    - Castform is like a mascot for the new weather mechanic

    Out of all of Pokemon's gimmicks, would you consider Legendary Pokemon to be one of its most effective/well known? Heck, if you consider the anime, it might even be one of the first ones a person encounters, what with Ho-oh, a Legendary Pokemon that didn't even exist in the games at the time, showing up and pulling viewers into the mystery of the Pokemon world. And then it became what defined which game you purchase (first), creating the term, "Box art Legendaries". And even before that, Mewtwo caused countless rumors by existing as the final Pokemon catching challenge, with no hint of the original Pokemon it was cloned from, Mew. IDK where I'm going with this. What are your thoughts?

  • @TitusRedwind
    @TitusRedwind 5 місяців тому +1

    If say a gimmick pokemon is any pokemon with a unique mechanic whether that be an exclusive move/ability, specific evolution requirements, or anything else that sets it apart.
    Take eevee for example. It has 8 possible evolutions which is exclusive to it.
    There's Annihilape that needs to use rage fist 20 times as primape to evolve.
    Shedinja is a pokemon with 1 hp but with the trade off of wonder guard.
    Castform is an often forgotten about pokemon who's type changes with the weather conditions.
