9520RX John Deere-2660VT Vertical Tillage Demo

- Опубліковано 10 чер 2019
- Midwest Machinery sent us a 9520RX John Deere and 2660VT Disc to demo and try our hand at some vertical tillage. I was really hoping this would be our opportunity to try out some no-till. Unfortunately it's just too muddy.

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

“I almost pulled a Jim” 😂🤣😂🤣😂😂
I was so gonna say,, Jim's gonna fire you before you finish that field!😂😂
He actually said “just about pulled a Jim” not what you said
@@nathanbrown130 thanks for letting me know Einstein
I really appreciate it when you explain the pros & cons and features of these demos you get to play with. Some “farmtubers” just take aerial videos with dance music and never really explain the tractor or provide a good review. This is what separates you from all the rest. Keep up the good work!
Being as detailed as you are about what your doing, why your doing it, and any changes you make are what keeps me coming back. Keep up the good work!
This is reality in farming. Thank you for showing the hard parts of farming where you don't got good conditions!
Good idea with the sign. Don't need any idiots bugging you or your family. I appreciate the videos.
That smile killed me hahahaha I was the same way when I ran a 9570RX
Oh the Joy's of farming. Thanks for the day in the life and keeping it real.
I am glad you show the good, bad and the things that don't work no matter how you we try.
Thanks for sharing.
"Almost pulled a Jim" - our family's new favorite phrase of exclamation is "Holy Buckets!" Thanks for the authenticity in the video.
Lol! I recently learned that holy buckets is a MN thing!
@@MillennialFarmer You hear it in your neighbor state to the west a lot too.
Millennial Farmer Very common saying in the U.P also
Entertaining & Informative as ever zach. I think we all chuckled softly inside when you revealed the new code term , for getting stuck. almost pulled a jim.
It's a little refreshing to see honesty in a product review
I am in awe at the machinery I am seeing here, the costs that must be involved and the work and knowledge. My hat is off to you man.
It IS what it is bro!!!... I just had a similar situation, in an entirely different industry...was lent some gear.. ( GOOD GEAR)... but it just didn't work out for me in my particular situation....we suck it up, we regroup, and we overcome... and get ready for the next set of challenges... it's what hard working folks do... Power on Zach.... you're a good man..
Definitely still an interesting video. Like you said, this is the real world and how things go sometimes. Thanks for all the videos!
Perfect timing I’m on my lunch break now. Finishing up the last little bit of our beans in MS
Hats off to you for keeping your cool during a very stressful situation.
Yes the John Deere 9rx is my favorite John Deere tractor
It's one of those years here in Minnesota! Oh well .... Hey I've got a diagonal till machine that would do the trick...priced Right!
I've been binging on your videos all weekend. I really like how you take us through everything you do to keep the farm running. Being a farmer has to be frustrating at times, due to all the things outside of your control..cough...weather...cough. The fact that you keep on going made a believer (and a subscriber) out of me!!!
Zach, Thanks for not sugarcoating the demo, as you say, it is what it is. Different soil make up, moisture content, overburden all make farming a trial and error kind of deal. You certainly have had an interesting spring. Good luck getting that 40 under control.
Hi Zach, I'm sorry you could not work the last 40 acres. The corn residue sure kept the moisture in and makes it impossible to work the soil and get the crop in. I hope insurance covers the situation as it seems very obvious you can't get the crop in. Please keep us posted on this specific piece of land. Dean from Edina
Don't be sorry, that was a great vid. It's good to see what doesn't work too!
I was thinkin that must have been a pretty fancy vertical tillage tool to be able to adjust the disk gang angle and roller basket pressure on the fly like that
Just the way the ball rolls. Great video! Thanks for all the work y’all do
Worked on the farm for a family full time for years......great to see somebody thats honest
still awesome to see that beast work. sorry it didnt work out brother. keep up the great content
VT's are great in the right conditions and with the right soil types.
Great video! Everyone in the midwest is having the same issues with wet wet fields this year!
I'm down here in central Kansas, and I can only sporadically get out in my fields to work them and still haven't got all my planting done yet on June 11th!!
Holy Buckets!! Heh.. Keep up the great videos Brother It's excellent seeing what our farming brethren up north in MN are doing out in the fields!!
That was unbelievable, I really appreciate you giving that a try. In Ontario we do exactly that for all our bean ground so that we can leave our soil undisturbed for the winter but man o man now I can see now why u do fall tillage
I see that rock picker in almost every one of your videos... :) Great Video as always..very educational.
That's one wicked tractor Zach,that "disk"looks like a pain in the "---".
You could turn that 40 acres into a dirt track...just sayin'.😎👍
Right now it would be a mud track.
It is what it is. Thanks for the honesty.
I love love love how frustrated you were!! Finally!!! A short glimpse into REAL FARMING!!!
Lol, and this was edited! Believe me, I was much more frustrated when the camera was off!
Yall need to try out a Kelly diamond harrow!
Would've been perfect for that field.
I think we demoed that same tractor. Nice tractor minus they have the hydraulic lever labels messed up lol there's no 3 pt hitch on that thing
Very great video! I really enjoy the way you describe the actual situation, without bashing the equipment. There sure are places where it does excellent work, just not in these conditions. - Thanks for the real life videos !!!
It is nice that you are able to try new tools out
Poor Jim he was just trying to play in the mud and he will never hear the end of it... 😂
Please add a no experience option with the no till survey. Would be interesting😁
I know it's frustrated with wet spots and wishing for dry weather to get planting done. I've always frustrated with my field wet spots when I have to cross the creek but my friend of mine was telling me about a beaver dam was building up that causes the high rise water on the creek. I like the no til grain drill and it's done very good job to knock down pollen weeds for 12 years as a small farmer of myself. Best luck with your planting
I love working with Midwest Machinery great company to work with
It would be interesting to try the John Deere 2680H High-Performance Disk.
As a hay farmer, that’s the attitude I have towards sickle mowers!
Good video anyway! 👍🏻
P.S. If I lived closer to Minnesota I’d make you an offer on those Horizontal Tillage tools!
Thanks for your great videos. I know they are a lot of work.
This is the first time i feel like i have been in your shoes. We are always having a hard time trying to get anything done! Thanks for the video Zach!
I'm from MN, too. Once again the statement stands, "Needs more tile."
My fav: “....sure is colorful out this morning.”
🤣😂lol
I enjoy bigtractorpower a lot. As do my kids. Seeing the equipment working flawlessly is entertaining. But I enjoy watching another millennial working his butt off, even when the outcome isn't perfect. That's why I watch: you keep it real.
That grin in the into was great. At least you had some fun driving it around.
"I won't knock him, he's actually getting work done"
I laughed out loud!!
Maybe they should borrow his
Guess you know why that 40 was available.
its because it wasn't worked last fall... did u not hear him??
@@carterspies3587 You kinda sound like a jerk
Not worked last fall well gee wonder why it was available the land owners new it was too wet
Floreypottery do you understand how renting land works?...
@@Floreypottery It was land that was rented. That said the former renter let it go for a reason.
I know you work your tail off and long hours too. John Deere must love the way you push their equipment and show what each piece is capable of. Great vids, THANX
Fantastic video explaining how and why no-till and cover crops aren't the solution for every acre. And that's coming from a guy who is a major proponent of both practices.
Plant RICE!!!! You have a rice patty out their! Do it by hand, hire Malenials for 1 meg of data stream each!
We like our VT. Interested to see your take on it. Edit* we run a traditional no till planter over that seed bed then again we dont run it that wet. We have black soil but you must have black soil with glue.
We bought a tractor from Sauk centre and I can confirm that they have black soil with glue
Most farmers up here in SE North Dakota have just finished planting however there's still a few rushing to finish. This has probably been the most challenging planting season for them that I can remember.
That is amazing that you just said that, I was just talking to my wife saying I'd like to send him a message about that cover crop and no till that with work of course seems to work out for the better and environmentally better as well which like i told her I'm sure he knows about, you don't do that that long and not know or hear about this, there is a 10 or so series on it which was very awesome and eye opening, God bless brother
Here we are in Saskatchewan and it is so dry are soil has turned to sand
Forget about buying lottery tickets for awhile, seems to me like your outta luck (well good luck anyway). Good video! Keep 'em coming.
BTW, I am really enjoying the FieldWork Podcast.
Residue management starts at harvest. Looking forward to seeing what you guys find that works and what doesn’t.
Happy to hear you mention zero-till and cover crops for building healthy soil !!!
Might be a field for winter wheat after it dries out. Late season corn for silage to a local dairy farmer...
Oh thats a big tractor when in my deere its only 120 hp ;D
Just want to say that you are a man of great honor.
Hey it comes with farming. Not always ideal conditions and sometimes with weather like we had this season you have no choice but to take insurance claims on some land like that! Good Luck and look forward to feature videos!
Looks to me like the last Family farming that land knew %100 that they would not be back the following year. They didn't want to waste the money on the fuel knowing this. I'm thinking they were TOLD they would not returning. In the end it appears you may have signed the lease a smidge late this year with the amount of rain you've been receiving. That 40 acres is going to need a solid week of sunshine to form up. Good luck Zach.
pottinger 10001 t terradisc would do it. it did great job on our fields (had on demo 6001t model)
Great video. Don’t apologize. The candid way you present both the good and bad of your own business is refreshing. Also, nice sign. Mine says “If you can read this you’re in range.” I turned it around backwards and put a .308 hole through it before mounting for effect. Keep up the good work.
That's awesome!! I REALLY like that idea!
I hate commercials. However now learning that you only get paid if I watch the complete commercial; I now take one for the team. I'm a retired Ag teacher here, and love the fact that you support the FFA.
up here in Manitoba we would consider spreading on canola and heavy harrow after. Especially with Rain coming!!!
Mightyunit what a lot of Michigan farmers seemed to do this year lots of yellow fields I think they knew it was gonna be wet all year
Looks like an exact copy of a 520 case qaudtrac and 330 Turbo till
Hey MN this year when we planted or wheat whe got a case puma stuck in mud and we spend 2 hours until we got it out
Great videos love yoir work
You inspired me to start my own mini farm thank you millennial farmer
0:07 That look on your face when you just got away with something.
Dang that's a mess. Hope she drys out for ya. Definitely none of that ground on my farm. All sand round here
Well done. We all have those two-step backwards kinda days. Please keep us informed on what happens. And, I like the private drive sign. Probably need it for us viewers. :)
We use discs a lot down here in south Texas love um. Cool to watch different ways things happen in different places!
It's just to darn wet man your going to have to wait and pray for the best
Hook up to a Salford! We used ours for our last 150 acres of more wet ground. It dried out quick and left a good seed bed with the rolling baskets!
I did that 2 worked pretty good but I hit it quite a few times
@@jder-ip7jx I hit most of our fields once and they were good to go. Only had to do two of our smaller fields twice. They didn't get worked last fall
Oh ya forgot 2 mention none of mine where worked last fall
We vt all our ground and it works good when we go about 9 mph and go at an angle
Speed is key we run ours at 9-10mph and about 4-6degress and it works great!
This year has just been challenge after challenge. Thanks for the good laugh though
Being a farmer is just a long series of challenges and misery.
100%
We had to replant 600 acres of cotton. Worried about the corn, went too long without rain. Hope the best for y’all!!
Zha Zha Binks Luckily we had a good slow rain. Everything looks much better. Now I need rain to wait till about Tuesday before it comes. Louisiana needs to send me humidity! I can still breathe easily so it’s not cotton humid. 😂
My late PawPaw wouldn’t allow fussin about humidity! Happy cotton is more important than happy kids. I guess it’s so apart of me now I want the Bama summer/fall everyone hates. Thank You for asking about us!
Bass Trammel exactly, that’s what it’s been like for me and my family with our dairy farm
this is why i love your channel..you show the good the bad and the ugly of everyday farming..
Love the grin!
I am a new subscriber from South Louisiana (Cajun Country).Love this channel. Watching a bunch of them to get caught up! Lol! Hope you guys have a bountiful crop .
Down here in southern MN we usually disc whatever stalks are left before running a digger across the top (if we do corn) sucks to see it couldn't help you out in your neck of the woods crazy to see how much soil type and conditions can change in just a few hundred miles
"Just about pulled a Jim" LOL poor Jim he isn't going to be left alone about that
Look forward to an update later! I'd like to see how Tillage Radishes work. Seen them used on PP soybean ground here in IL.
We run an independent Salford vertical tillage to avoid all the gang plugging issues. Works great. They have a independent disc also.
Try a great plains turbo-till or turbo-max
Horizontal tillage! That's a good one. Better copyright that phrase !
Lol gotta love American terminology 😂😂
Effort was definitely there. Sling you a cover crop to prevent weeds on it and be good for fall tillage for the following year. Wish you could try out a delgaman pro till. Even that my be plugged in your muck. Good luck!!!
I saw that beast roll through Albert Lea on a trailer yesterday.
What a monster!
Zach:
Really nice try. It is what it is.... We had to file an insurance claim on my dad’s Iowa farm corn ground becuz too wet and too late to plant.
Time to jus go fishin’.
Captain Al from Tampa. 😎
Should try some Horizontal Tillage!!! I no tilled everything this year... but it was pretty wet under some of that heavy straw... fall tillage for sure this FALL!
Haha that smile at the start. Someone had a good day.
Thanks Mid West
June 8th. “Dang near the middle of June!” Lol lol lol 🤣🤣🤣
Why is your quadtrac green? 🤔
Another great video buddy! Loving the content
A better question is why does it have yellow on it? It should be Red and Green!
Stay positive and have a cold one
I think we were doing a bit of "vertical tillage" back in the early 70s. We had a 10' McCormick disk which had no transport wheels. By pulling a rope and either pulling ahead (to put disk gangs are several angles) or backing up (to put disk gangs straight for travel). We had a tractor with a large set of duals which we were able to go thru mud holes & low spots. Usually after several hours or a day, it really dried out so we could hit those area with a field cultivator or big disk.
