My First Experience With No-Till

- W gave up on corn and switched the planter back to beans for our last 400 acres. We fixed a leaky hydraulic hose on the sprayer and tried out our new Seed Clean Out Shoot from Sloan Express. I also planted my first piece of No-till.

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Is your pool filled with algae? Looked so green on camera xD Great vid as usual!
Yeah, that thing needs work. My 65kgal is clean, blue, and temp sittin at 82. Zach needs about four gallons of chlorine and a good vac.
@@LordNelsonkm UV lamp and a sand filter is also an option :P But yeah a pool requires serous cleaning capabilities.
It’s iron, we just filled the pool. It will be crystal clear in a day or two.
Green to match his tractors.
@@MillennialFarmer Some glyphosate would take care of it.
I’m a farmer from Northern England we farm mainly Barley and Oats and we hold some sheep and cows, I’m always interested in how farmers around the the world operate. I found your channel about a year ago now and I find it fascinating on the differences between how you operate in Minnesota and how we operate.
I just want to thank you for sharing what you do on your farm and sharing your life with us.
The same reason why I watch the channel. I think us in the UK need to talk with famers in America and viseversa only way you learn it watching and talking to others
I'd like to second that
Superdude LIVE and me
Pm
Hutchibobs6290 , me too!
We need more channels like this showing how the real world works and what it takes to get it done.
You should post some more of your dirt track racing. I love the farming videos but I hear you talking bout racing and I would like to see more of that.
David Garee yea we need some more car owner Corey.
It's tough at the track. That's our 'time off' but yet we're always working...
Watch Gerraldfarms channel. He has some dirt track videos with in car camera.
Zach: Hey Jim, here is a new hat.
Jim: Ah, thanks.
Zach: Don’t get it stuck.
Oh jim jim bud yea dont do that bud
Oh since he made the 9RT get stuck😂
I lol, literally!
Jim just wants a raise!
Man I wish I could meet jim he looks like he’s just cool and down to earth lol
We use a 1960’s era aqua coloured bathtub and a five gallon pail as our seed transfer system. It has very few moving parts and one man can fill a twelve row planter with three bushel hoppers in about 10 minutes. The tub is made of a heavy gauge and will last for many years to come. It gives the added bonus of offering a structured exercise regime with repetitions about every thirty acres or about two hours. Fantastic!
You should time lapse a corn plant
That's a great idea
You should try the purple stuff on your Batteries to keep them safe in the yard. So the equipment will start without jumping the DEAD battery.
My dad and I went through a muddy area where the terragator spun through, and we went through it with our 9350 press drills. Wheat is just as good as the rest of the field in that spot! Good luck with your not till beans!
If you get a nice day I’d love to see a 12 hr time lapse on the corn to see the growth, thanks for the videos, your a inspirational for all!
Cool idea!!! 🤘🤘🤘
thanks for showing part of your life to all of us.
We've planted corn straight into cattle pasture while it's raining. Roundup and fertilize 5 days later...works if you get the rains.
Good job with Lou a vull, Zach!! It's versa (field) tile here in Indiana. And now, I'm gonna go start my planting for the year with my red tractor and green and yellow planter.
Why am I compelled to watch these videos? I'm a non-farming city boy from the Houston area! Can't stop watching these!
You can actually use WD-40 to remove the sticky label from your seed clean out shoot it worked for me removing labels from jars and metal
Quick tip Zack. I mounted a cheap 5gal container on my tractor filled with water so I can clean my hands after dealing with seed and talc powder and mud lol. Helps keep the tractors interior cleaner
Hi zack my name is mason and your video make me happy and want to have a farm like you me and my cousin have been sub to you scents 180,000 sub and when I was younger my dad had a friend who had a farm just like yours but it was in fargo. But when I was four years old my dad died it makes me happy when I watch your videos because it reminds me of the farm my dad worked at thank you for the amazing vidoes
Darn...was expecting a racing clip at the end this time. Maybe another time. I hope you had a great race. Thanks Zach.
I forgot the camera in my truck but I debated it
MN Millennial Farmer I hate to tell you this man but you proved my theory in this video, “ The only thing that runs on the Chevy is truly the owners mouth “ ! ! ! 😂👍🤠
Calm down before my Dodge laughs at your pathetically manufactured Rear ends 😂😂😂😂
Excuse me PSN CAMPiNG-_-KiNG but I’m a big Dodge lover too man ! OK
WD-40 works great for removing shipping label glue.
Little advice when you are playing(planting ) in the mud carry a cordless impact wrench and a 15/16 socket with you and zip off that gauge wheel and even a seed disk to clean out the mud. Saves your knuckles and your hands from being pinched and it goes faster.
I love your operation and how you seem to shuffle things around to fit the situation. The single question that comes to my mind is what other crops are grown in your area? Tank You
We didn't have seed tender machines when my Dad was planting back in the 60's and early 70's .... I was his seed tender! LOL
Just picked 170 bu/ac no-till corn here in Kansas. My dad's disks have more "barn dust" on them then "field dust", I'm a big fan of no-till, saves a ton of time and fuel in addition to putting down liquid 9-24 and 32-0 with the planter.
This is the best UA-cam channel i,ve ever seen and heard of in my life.
Remind me how that "wind and sun last night" works again!! I love it. Blessings, UK Farmer
Also, we were done with planting a month or so ago, but the 1 wet field was planted the other day, the field in front of our house was wet enough that the fertilize truck from CO-OP got stuck, and a week later, they buried a sprayer to the middle of the rim....... that was a show it took 3 tractors to get it out
Chevy includes a free dog with purchase, so you will have a companion on your walk home.
That had me snorting my Sunday coffee out of my nose!! Good one!

I had my planter all balled up with mud this spring in no till, the soil doesn’t dry out as fast if its not tilled, so I’m thinking seriously about putting on mud smith gauge wheels on but they probably have their limits too. This has been the wettest planting season I’ve seen. Been farming since 1977. Just found your channel and subscribed!
We still have not finished planting here in Finland because it was too cold until today :D
I’ve planted with pink seed and green seed, but most recently planted brownish/purple for a neighbor wanting to get their corn in. I don’t know what that company was thinking; probably the hardest seed to try to find.
Great to see you guys out in the field. Just finished my acres last night in Michigan. Who would’ve thought planting on June 8th.
Mud story of my life this year. I get to plant all the marginal field while the 36 row planter stays on all the good fields. I no tilled about 2800 acres this year. We have one customer that does only no till. I definitely get a work out moving row cleaners up and down on a 24 row. Probably to picky but having them in the right spot makes getting the seed in the right depth. Sure wish had the precision clean sweep make moving row cleans way easier.
im a 15 year old from a very populated area in Florida and i havnt finished planting nor will i ever but i enjoy the vids. Keep up the good work!
I wasnt into like farming and stuff and i tried farm sim with my lil’ bro and i searched how to do stuff and i stumbled upon ur channel and now i want to be a farmer myself. Apprechiate it bro👏
Here it rained ..a few drops... and its snowing like crazy down south... wish we had that!
Pro tip: forego the seed tender all together unless you have individual seed bins. Put forks on a front end loader tractor and hang the entire box over the seed tank. 50 units moved in 10 seconds. I show up with a flat bed semi carrying a loader tractor, at least 4 boxes, and a vehicle with a built in tow bar. Show up, puke everything out and head for the fertilizer truck (which I hook the vehicle to).
Yo dude you inspire me so much, I am ten years old and wanting to peruse farming. Watching your amazing channel has given me the confidence, im not trying to get likes im just stating how I feel. Keep up the great work.
A hot air gun will soften label adhesive so that it peels off cleanly. We used to hot-water bottles to get the labels off floppy disks, so I'm guessing 80 to 90°C (26 to 32°F) does the trick. That means keeping a hot air gun a good six inches from the part to avoid damaging it.
Here plough is king and fortunately never been pushed to point where no til has come into play but gotta be prepared. Hope all goes well and I'm sure things will come good eventually?
Its amazing to me how yall are planting and down in south Texas we are already harvesting.
I like no till. We use it a lot here but you can't beat the view of fresh torn ground.
I think Welker farms could pull some strings at CaseIH to get you a Quadtrack Demo this fall. It would be great publicity for all
You will love notill give it time...
Mostly working soil is in your head
Use rye etc as well..it is a system
We've tried it but haven't been able to get it to work yet. We have a 40 that didnt get worked last fall and it's still a mud pit right now
Part of no-til is cover crops, the root create porosity to drain water, the root and above ground debris helps float equipment. Used to do a lot of septic systems, could drive over sod with dump trucks seven times (almost exactly 7 X) mostly built roads in. It’s amazing what sod will hold up on a limited basis.
You did say Louisville correctly!! I moved here 10 years ago and found out pretty quickly how it should be pronounced. Lou-uh-vull. Love the videos!
We managed to get our 9510RT tractor stuck on Monday, every tractor we attempted to pull it out with also got stuck. We now have 3 tractors stuck in 1 corner of a field. I’m hoping that the 9620rx we are getting on Sunday will pull em out or else we will have to hire in a Case quadtrac chipped to 700 hp
Love the schwan's lol, I actually just started a job at that company in Michigan as a route driver...love the videos, good job sir
You really need a sub-woofer bad in that tractor to bring out the bass and make the windows vibrate....LOL!
Don`t worry Jim, been stuck a couple times!! Cheers from Ontario Canada!
Can't beat working on a farm owning John Deere Tractors and Chevrolet Vehicles and getting to race in your dirt modified. Sounds like a great life right there.
Down here in north central Kansas we’re having to replant. Mainly due to to much moisture with compaction and then it drying out
nick anderson I’m here in southwest Kansas near garden city where you at?
Way to take good care of all your babies! Making sure they all have a proper dose of baby powder.
But what gets me thinking is.... man that would take along time to say good night to all those babies.
Hope the Beans don't get Cervical Cancer.Guess Glyphosate isn't no dangerous than Baby Powder
More air time for Jim , he will soon be the star of the show . Ask for a raise Jim 😀😂😂😀
Gotta have some fun times too and Friday is a good day for that
That's a lot of leftover seed! You should either use a better calculator or you need a big deer plot for Jim to hunt with that fancy camo hat!
What you were doing at 10:00 is what we have been having to do at the end of every pass here in north central Illinois
I like seeing all of the green
3:35 true Minnesotan right there. Moving away makes me miss these sayings! Lol. I have farmers in the family up by Wheaton and just want to tell you to stay tough as bad as this year has been.
We need a 2019 racing video!! Look up MERRIT SPEEDWAY in Michigan 💪💪
Zach, sorry you had to give up on corn with the season advancing so rapidly. I imagine with the different yields that soybeans are less profitable to you. Love your sense of humor and "make every day count" attitude. You are an inspiration. Love the pool. Dean from Edina
'Deere hunting' Priceless LOL. I live in New Zealand and was not familiar with North America accents, but I have been picking up on how the more northern folk say words like 'out' as more of an 'oot'. In fact I thought it was a Canadian thing, but Minnesota is way up there. I was born in the UK and have lived in New Zealand since 2004. When I got here I thought all Kiwis sounded much the same, and while we have far less obvious regional accents here than in the UK - Welsh, Scouse, Geordie, Brummie, Cockney etc. - after 15 plus years I can now tell where abouts in the country people come from. It's interesting, and I wonder what drives those regional variations.
If you ever get tired of digging mud out of your depth control wheels, try out the open ones with the three spokes. Those things are miracle workers and just let all of the mud fall out of them rather than plugging.
I think I might get some for around the planter wing wheels. That's always where the problem starts because those tires push the mud first
I would just like to say, Thank You, for being a farmer.
Thank you for explaining the color on the corn. I was wondering, but, didn't want to seem like more of an idiot than I already am.
I know the dirt track stuff is your time to play but it would be cool to see a special video about some of that
It's all right to take off when you are the BOSS!
I was at the Paris tractor pulling competition and I seen a few guys wearing your merch ( that's Paris Ontario)
I know a lot of people see a tractor with tracks and think there’s no way that will get stuck like a wheeled tractor...... oh contraire. Sometimes hey are much worse but I still prefer our 8360RT over our other 8 series wheeled machines. You make me miss the days of racing late models with Greg Biffle. Thanks for sharing another fantastic show 🥓🍺🥓🍺🥓🍺cheers
great video, glad to see the millennial comments LOL. Also kind of good to see that newer equipment has the same mud and Clay packing issues as my old 50 year old planters LOL. Keep up the great work thank you. Kapper
As always i enjoy watching these videos. I enjoy learning about farming, even though this is just the tip of what’s really involved. I’m no farmer lol I’m a captain running inland push boats on he east coast. Keep up the good work and stay safe!!
Summers........Fridays........great time to go racing!!!!
Wouldn't mind seeing a dirt race video every once in awhile. Track by me is asphalt but wanting to check out Fairbury soon. Kyle Larson raced this week and wish I had known before.
As always- love tuning in and seeing you live the dream!!!🚜🚜🚜
I think International had the first single seed hopper on their planters back in the early 70's on the model 400. Good to see John Deere finally
I accidentally pushed send, I meant to say, its good to see John Deere has finally got into the 70's technology... LoL
The corn is sure growing fast all this rain we have had to replant some not alot
You need mud Smith gauge wheels and mudscrapers on your gauge and closing wheels yes I know its expensive to do that on a 24 row but my 16 has easily paid for it this year.
Had a bad rain storm come through Ohio and can not get back in the field for about 2 weeks!
Awesome video keep it up and racing is fun and a good get away from farming good luck this year
Gotta love that purple enogen corn. I'll tell ya what, Tharaldson's ethanol over here in ND loves that stuff.
I can’t believe you went to the hospital over a scratch on the arm 😂 aww muffin 😂
"It's just that Chevy is by far superior..that's all" teeeheeee heeee heeee
In Australia we call the red tractors as you say Versa-tile also we have a saying if its not green it shouldn't be seen love John Deere all the way.
Superior at comin' in second.. behind Ford 😉
ddylla85 yes
Had a friend with pool water that color...the ducks loved it.
Just love your channel, videos and sense of humor....Thanks!
We farm and race also. We are from owatonna Minnesota and race at chateau raceway, deer creek speedway and a few other tracks
Our corn has red coating. I live in the NL btw
I used to work at a place called Ver-Sa-Til Associates (not the tractor company lol) and I never really knew how to pronounce it either.
I used to work for sloan implement in shelbyville IL
Zack- "now you can wear that dear hunting" Jim- "haha in my dreams'" same Jim same
mr. zach, first off chevy does make the superior product, and i can see the appeal of green over red too, although i thought you might pull a jim there in the field (maybe hoping a little...) and good job having gas in the seed tender!! another great video, good luck running tonight for car owner cory let us know how you do!
Nice job planting there, Jim.
Onna just keeps getting bigger-and-bigger, god i love German Sheps, and miss my old gal just as much, appreciate her while you can buddy
I'll be looking into that cleanout shoot, didn't know such a thing existed.
Nice Tractor Cab Concert 😁😁
Your green machine is out numbered!
Omg! Car owner Cory needs another video! Miller lite should sponsor it.
Corey is a Keystone man!!
New subscriber. I am not into farming, but I do have a friend who is. She and her family do what you do. So I subscribed. Also... I was born in Minnesota for 15 years. but now live in Michigan.
Shorter growing session Makes for a hectic life. Enjoy the race.
Another of the reason for inoculated, colored seed, is elevators won't take them if you have any left over. I hope you were as lucky at the track as you were gettin' out of the mud!! LOL!!
