Do you keep hognose snakes? What type of enclosure do you use? What morph?
I have two hognoses I have my young normal female in a 20 gallon tank. My male super conda is in a tote he is going to be in a 20 gallon
We have a 6 month old male in a 20g. He's an Evans hypo
I also have 2. I plan on breeding them as well as future additions in the coming years so for now I'm working with a rack system. Is there any correlation that you've noticed with breeders kept in racks as compared to hoggies kept in more of a display type enclosure? Will it stress them out when it comes to breeding if they are primarily kept in an aquarium in another room and then go in to breeding most likely in bins? BTW, it's a lavender het albino female and a male arctic mocha het lavender het albino het axanthic. I'm hoping he's gonna be a great breeder for several lucky ladies.
#dontrawdogtheheat 🤣🤣
We have four hoggies currently. Two 2021 babies from shows and two from Craigslist that are a bit older. I thought you did a good job explaining a basic setup for a hognose. Personally I have found that ours do better with a heat lamp or heat emitter as well as under tank heating. Our male especially seemed to begin eating better for me once he had higher ambient temps from the heat lamp.
We have a bioactive 25 gallon front opening, and an extreme red albino named Weasley.
I have an axthanic male hognose, almost 1.5 years old now. I have him in a 20 gallon tank and he does well… not sure he got the memo they aren’t climbers though. I added a plant with vines to the back of the tank more for decoration and he is constantly in the top of it or sitting on top of his cave like he’s freaking Simba looking out on his kingdom.
My girl uses every square centimeter of her enclosure. I love it.
Probably trying to get closer to the heat source.
It’s crazy how small males get, gigantic males are 2 feet in length while most remain 12-18-inches. They, in all likelihood, only need a 10 gallon enclosure to be able to fully stretch out in their enclosure. A 20 gallon is easily twice as long as they are or longer.
@@metaknight115an enclosure thats twice as long as a snake is usually what you want
@@hereticFox716 That’s a giant enclosure. Usually, the tank should ideally be the full length of the snake. Bigger is always better, but giving a corn snake an 8-12 food enclosure seems a little too much to ask.
I would love to see you do two-part videos for each of the animals - one for setting up a budget friendly enclosure like this which breaks down all of the basic needs of the enclosure, and then a second part for upgrading to a bioactive setup
Sounds like a brilliant idea to me
Really considering a hog nose next I am fairly new to the repticulture community and I am always so appreciative of your content. It’s engaging, fun, and most Importantly it’s easy to apply! Great work as always.
Welcome aboard!
Just remember spider morphs aren’t cool and Green iguanas are not beginner pets
@@JohnDoe-uz2yt he’s considering a hognose not a ball python or lizard and definitely don’t recommend pushing your opinions on others. 🤦♂️I’m sure you don’t like being told what to do just saying 🤷♂️
Hognose snakes make great beginners and truly amazing one of a kind snakes. I absolutely love mine and I’ve owned and worked with almost every species in the pet trade and easily one of my absolute favorites. And research is the key to any new pet even spider ball pythons and iguanas and both are amazing. Yes there are some spider balls out there that have problems but there are way more without them just like any morph or species. So honestly don’t always believe what others say do your research and find what works for you best and what your most passionate for and you can make it happen🤘🏻 And in no way shape or form am I sponsored by iguanas or spider ball pythons🙋♂️✌️
@@pumpkinchow Please do more research on spider ball pythons and PLEASE don’t recommend them to beginners?! It is a very commonly shared fact in the reptile community that breeding (and buying) of spider morphs is quite cruel in MOST cases as a massive percentage has at least some form of neurological damage. And most are of the opinion that since you can’t tell if they’re in pain or not the best bet is to just stay away all together. So don’t spread misinfo about them “being fine most of the time” because this is simply not true…
I'm seriously thinking of getting a hognose snake (the more I research them, the more I feel like they are the perfect reptile for me!)
I thought that finding a hognose that was any other than a normal type in the country that I live in was pretty much impossible, and that my only option was pet store bought.
But as it turns out, there is a breeder a 2 hour drive from me with all sorts of beautiful morphs! And I know they are captive breed (important to me).
So my dream of a snow morph hognose might not be so impossible after all 😊
hoggies are so worth it!
Pls... an Albino in any form is never a helthy pet.... cause of lack by melanin and stuff they r sensitiv to light cause they have no protection ->skin cancer Chance, if u Use uvb sunburn etc....
Also These snakes eyes r much more sensitiv to light and can feel pain because of it.
Also many albino's r born deaf.... wich is underrated cause you cant really Controll it at a snake but also Important Part of suffering from albinism.
Pls dont Support any people who breed ill snakes.
Even if it not seems to you that These "breed" is suffering...
Reptiles often suffer silent
(Sry 4 my english i'm not a mother tongue but i try my best to explain that stuff)
@@l.7783 Thank you for your input, and I understand your consern. I will put some more research into the health status of albino snakes.
@@novanettle7497 I believe the negative effects are mostly in animals that require high amounts of UVB (albino green iguanas come to mind as having issues because the UVB can damage their eyes to the point they become almost blind). But that is just what I have heard. I’d love to hear what you find in your research if you don’t mind sharing
Thanks so much Adam! I'm on VA disability and I've been trying to figure out how to get a budget enclosure idea! This was perfect timing.
Excellent video. Thanks again for this.💚🐍
glad it helped :)
Hognose's have the most adorable faces 😍 great video as always!
Thank you!! 😊
I had a hard time convincing my wife to let me get a snake, and I’m so happy I found out about hognoses from you because now she can’t stop talking about them! We’re currently doing our own research and will probably start buying supplies soon so we can be ready when we decide to pull the trigger and buy one!
Nice video, great explanation on why snakes won't be stressed if you provide cover fir them to feel secure. 👍
Thanks Rick!
This is so timely! I'm hoping to get a hognose at the March Tinley show. I already got a tank...I went with an 36x18x18. I just need to set it up. Can't wait!!! Oh and it will be my first snake 💚🐍
so great to hear!
Super first snake, you won’t be disappointed!
If it's going to be a baby hognose...you should probably start it in something smaller until it eats regularly. That size should be good for an adult. You can get a shoebox size tub at Walmart for like $5 and just use a heat mat with a thermostat. Set it a few degrees higher than what you want if using substrate and make sure there is plenty of holes for ventilation to keep humidity between 30%-50%.
@@Upper_echelon_exotics good idea!
Cool what kind of hognose
you did awsome Adam
Great video
You’re the most undersubscribed reptile guy on here
This is exactly the video I needed! Been slowly getting an enclosure set up for a hoggie as our first snake (due to space limits, had to get a small snake and GOD THEY’RE SO CUTE).
This guys is #1 thanks for another awesome video!
ayyy thank you so much, I’m going to set one up in February again thanks
Thanks for the video . Good job 👍
this was so helpful!! thank you so much!!!
Another great video! Hognoses are wonderful pets and so easy to set up well as you showed!
Thank you so much I've watched all your videos for hognose snakes everything is very helpful!
Really enjoyed it. I found really helpful in regards to light and heat setup :)
Thanks for the video! Considering getting a hognose and this was really helpful!
Great video sir
thank you!
6th. Could you please do a video like this for garter snakes and Argentine black and white tegus
nailed it
Another great video thanks never considered hognose but you have me doing some research
I absolutely love this video! Great job!
thanks!
Really loving the enclosure set up videos, they're my fave! I could binge watch these things all day and plus, i love that you do them on a budget so that practically anyone can get involved! :)
I'd also love to see the corn snake setup video as i personally keep 2 of em and as they are a popular snake, i think the video would do well and be really useful to new keepers.
Awesome! Thank you! More to come!
I'm a big believer in giving your snake a way to move from each end of the tank in a completely covered highway. In with you completely on that. Anything that reduces stress on your critters is never a bad idea.
bingo!
My cousin made a little tunnel like a covered bridge for people lol. Her garters love to go under the little tunnel from one end to the other, so much so that she basically always knows where they’re hiding when she needs to check up on them.
@@corneliastreet2491That’s so cool!!! Pvc pipes would work as well, wouldnt they? I contemplated on getting garter snakes but now i plan to get a hognose. I’m going to get a male at an upcoming reptile expo, I’m very excited! (Sorry for ranting)
Great video! I like that you’ve done videos for setups for different animals. I’d like to get a Western Hognose one day and have been researching their care. But videos like this are perfect!
I have been watching your videos and some of the other reptile videos and I have come to love these little hognose snakes and hope that one day I can get one so thank you for your videos I am learning a lot.
This video is exactly what I needed, thanks so much
Glad it was helpful!
Would love to see more please
This video was awesome. I found it because I am thinking of getting a Western Hognose and this is really helping me plan out my set up and pricing stuff out and just generally knowing what I am getting into. So thanks!
Great video bro,it's pretty great
Really cool! Can't wait to see the next species bro! :)))
Great job 👏🏻 should definitely help any new hognose owners 🙋♂️✌️
I hope so!
I will never raw dog my heat ever again. Thank you.
I want to get a western hognose snake so I enjoy your videos, there very helpful thank you
Great video!
Thanks for the visit!
I love this!! It just helps with ideas in all different kinds of set ups. Let's all be better and learn together!
Yes! Thank you!
I’m new to reptile pets, and I really want a hog nose snake! Their so cute. This was very helpful, thank you! I will subscribe. :)
I get my first Hognose snake next week and I've had several bearded dragons in my time. So it feels like I'm brushing up on my reptile habitat knowledge here. You really helped me get my snakes enclosure ready!
You nailed it! I love your channel and thanks to you my appreciation and fascination with reptiles is growing!
I appreciate that!
I love watching these! Even though I'm not allowed to have reptiles, I have used some of your tips in the past for other animals. And these are just so enjoyable and encouraging to watch. You can set up an animal on a budget, and you have some really great ideas.
The TPB meme!!!! 10/10
They are all over my back yard. Cute lil things
This is dope
omg i been wanting this video since i joined the channel early summer
ehhhh glad you enjoyed!
I have a 40 gallon terrarium needing an inhabit and I've been wanting a hoggie for YEARS. Your video just sold me 💗
Thanks for including info for babies as well as adults! Breeders could do better with this…
I was not informed on how to house my crested gecko and plus, she seems to have some trouble with finding her food and water (plus she’s been permanently stunted at juvenile size) so she’s in a 20 gallon where nothing ever gets moved too far.
Doesn’t matter how informative a breeder is with caring for hatchlings, babies grow. Continue assisting the reptile community, you’re awesome ^^
thanks for watching!
Forever sad that I cant own a hognose 😔😔 ekans is such a beauty
she really is
Same
Hey Adam, love your content! It was thanks to you, Clint, and Emily that I finally got my first reptile. She's a baby Mexican black kingsnake, and she's so fascinating to watch and handle. I'll be moving her up to a larger enclosure as she grows, so I'd love to see your take on a kingsnake enclosure video!
i'm getting my first place all to myself soon and want a pet to make me feel less alone and to care for. hognose snakes are really cute, thanks for the informative video.
Hello Adam great to see you
You too!
Hi, I love your channel!
Hey, thanks!
Yes! I would love to see a milk snake video!! 🥰
Great video. I even got some ideas for my existing hognose enclosure
That's awesome!
After watching your video on things that actually work for reptiles, I bought the Govee hydrometer and thermometer and I absolutely loovvveee it. I love that I don’t have to be in the room to see what the humidity and temp is. Thanks for the suggestion!!
I put my snake where my desks use to be and my desk was pretty enclosed so he’s always been a happy camper
I love your videos and hognose are one of my favorites and for the other side maybe a rosy boa.
Thank you for this. My kids and I really want one, so we are doing lots of research on husbandry. This was very helpful and who doesn't love budget friendly options?
Great video, really useful and interesting
☺ 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
The timing on this could not be any more perfect - Im just starting to get the equipment for my new hognose Im hoping to get mid-march! Thank you for the great video!!
thank you!! im getting a hognose hatchling from a nearby breeder soon and i have been researching, but alot of different websites have different info. :]
Your timing 👌
ehhhh
Woohoo! I'm planning on getting a hognose soon and this came out at the right time!
nice!
I have my Ballphython in a Wood enclosure to which inside I etached a pool cover plane(so it doesn't get moldy). And it's working great she explores the eclusure so much, somtimes she just lies around the eclusure and is taking a short break till she gets on her way again. And like I said she LOVES it
just bought the thermostat for my heat mat! thanks adam! your videos are some of my favourite reptile videos on youtube
Just letting you know: heat mats are not a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
Love the dollarama water dish
This is literally my setup aside from I use a tub and rack system. You pull out a tub, it looks just like the inside of that enclosure. Loved this whole thing! And yes please do this more...I'm always trying to see how people keep the animals I keep. I just got a male dumerils boa and a tegu last year so I've got suggestions for a couple future vids haha
I have a BP and a corn snake. Hog nose was next on my list, perfect timing for this video 😁
This video was very cool and it was very helpful for me to visualize how to set up an enclosure. I don’t know about everyone else but I would love to see more enclosure set up videos for different species.
Glad it was helpful!
my hoggy loves a base of coconut dirt with a huge pile of aspen on it. He also loves water for some reason, so I have upgraded him to a longer water bowl he can soak himself in. It's near the heat lamp so it stays nice and warm. he's a goofy little boy for sure and so much fun. I highly recommend hognosies. they make great little companions.
except.........sometimes Hobi goes into the dirt and I won't see him for a week until he smells dinner (thawed pinky)
We just got our first hognose this weekend at a reptile expo near us. We have all pythons and boas besides that, so I was thrilled to discover you had this video to help with her set up. Shes only 2 months at the moment so she is in something small right now but i like to get adult enclosures for my reptiles as soon as possible.
wicked
Adam, I love this. I actually caught a hognose snake last summer. It was hung in the bird netting I had over my tomatoes. I couldn't see it's head at first and it had a lot of sand and dirt over it, so I didn't know what it was. But when it pulled its head from under the tub, I knew, that little upturned nose.....a dead giveaway. I wanted so bad to keep it. I didn't of course, but the thought did cross my mind. I did a photo opp with it and then set it free.
I tried soft paper bedding for my hognose(normally used for rabbits n guinea pigs) and he loves it. It's lightweight, so won't bury him if a tunnel collapses, but holds tunnels amazingly well(I was a little surprised), easy for him to curl up in n make a "nest".
Thank you Adam for the information. I don't have any snakes yet but the hognose I am looking to be my first.
You should do a rosy boa for the other side of the enclosure.
I don't own one though :(
I got a hognose male and he is living his best life in playsand and in an 100cmx60cmx50cm tank with UVB light and one just for the heat. I had a sand clay mixture before I found it too tight in some places. So I really use just playsand for my future set ups - and he is digging like crazy and looks so happy with it :)
Adam, Just so you know you will never saw anything more awesome in your youtube life then raw dogging your heat tape.
hahahahha!
Got a hog and i love watching vids to make his life better ❤️
that is amazing!
i just had two people on reddit try to tell me aspen was a bad substrate. i’ll always go back to wickens to make sure i’m doing the right thing.
So excited for this video! I have 12 hoggies currently that range in morph from albino, mocha, axanthic, lavender, conda.
amazing collection!
After building a bioactive enclosure for my crested gecko I have been thinking about getting a hognose next! Definitely a great video! Haha
🔥🔥🔥"Raw Dawg" Your Heat...😂😂😂🙈 The Full House Dad Would Have Appreciated This... Crushing It!!!
Your care guides are always straight-forward, easy to understand, and very informative! I also love how you always mention cheap alternatives rather than only reptile branded things for substrate, water bowls, and clutter. :D
I got my first snakes late 2021, and both are male hognoses (a normal and a superconda). I’ve got them in exoterra enclosures with lots of fake foliage, multiple hides of various sizes, and I even added branches and vines for them to climb (they both seem to enjoy climbing). I do provide UVB for both, too. :D
I always try to make these things seem as simple as they actually are
Great information! Just got two neonate Solomon Island Ground Boas. Perfect snakes for fish keepers.
Very nice!
I use the same setup for my garter snakes, and corn snakes. Aspen and dollar store plants.
No way! I seen your second video like ever? On hognose care and I commented asking for a new vid two about two weeks ago! Sick dude thanks. I appreciate you doing this only because I asked you if you need any more ideas I'll be in the comment section 😂
enjoy!
I'd love to see your take on a bioactive enclosure for hognose snakes!
Never raw dog your heat 💀💀💀 I don't plan on getting a hognose, but I'll be suggesting this video to anyone I know who thinks they might want one. Very thorough, easy to understand, well produced (duh, it's a WWR video), and enjoyable to watch and listen to. I use your UA-cam almost like a podcast sometimes cuz I like the way you breakdown info, so the video holds even without the visuals. Good stuff dude.
ehhh thank you!
I just got a female. Arctic conda triple het. She is in a 10 gallon glass tank. I would love the pvc, but I’m still on a budget. Great video.
Would love to see a corn snake set up :) loved the video
Just got my baby hognose and set up its quarantine tank, perfect timing :D
That is awesome!
I love these set-up videos! The bioactive are goals, but sometimes you want/need something less intimidating. Thank you!
eh thanks for watching
A+ content, and just at the right time! We're moving cross country and I'll need to go "affordable" to replace the setup for my gal. Great note at the start about the sizing/gallons.
thanks for the nice feedback!
I‘d like to see corn snakes for the second enclosure. They are considered beginner’s snakes, so I think it would be interesting for people who didn’t decide on their first snake yet. I don’t own one - and I probably go with a ball python. I just love them so much. I always was kinda afraid of snakes until I hold a ball python in my teenage years. I immediately fell in love and knew I want to have one myself one day. But it would be great for people who don’t know yet!
good call
great video !! very informative.my brother has an albino hognose snake super cute snakes 😊
Thanks for watching!
Great video, planning on getting my son a hognose at our next reptile expo in Montreal so he was excited to watch the video with me! So again really good video and keep up the great work!!
there are expos in MTL?
@WickensWickedReptiles yes sir, there's more than 1! I know we have a big one downtown at some point but on March 9th and 10th there is one in pointe claire that I've been to in the past. It's great, lots of great people who love the hobby/industry and even more so it's pretty educational for the kids who just love reptiles and want to get into the hobby!
Awesome
thanks!
