  • In this review, I'm going to take a look at another beer from the Fat Orange Cat Brew Company, and it's their Stay At Home Dad With No Kids. This is an New England IPA that is brewed with Citra, Galaxy and Enigma hops. I absolutely despise Enigma hops, as I typically get a rotten trash bag/can vibe from it, so I'm hesitant about this one. That said, I'm going into this review with an open mind, like always, so hopefully it's delicious. Let's find out! I also want to give a huge thanks to my buddy, and viewer of the channel, Stephen (‪@jesusfreakinct‬), for this beer!

    rotten trash/rotten fruit 🤣 that's definitely a strong description. I always love the Fat Orange Cat can art.

      LMAO! That is Enigma in a nutshell for me. This one wasn't that bad, but it also wasn't that great, haha! I always love their can art (and names). They do a great job with 'em.
      Cheers, man!

    YOUR ENIGMA IS MY IDAHO 7 SON. Also, I've never heard of this brewery but the name of that beer legit made me lol.

      I know you have a big disdain for Idaho 7, so I think that's a great analogy. I don't mind Idaho 7 when it's used in conjunction with other hops. I always get a ton of pineapple. F THOSE ENIGMA HOPS, THOUGH! The beer name is fantastic, for sure.
      Cheers, buddy!

    Fat orange cat hasn't blown me away with any of their beers..... yet I don't remember having one I've hated. I don't pick them up enough to remember the price point.
    Cheers Joe

      Yeah, I don't think any of their beers have blown me away, but I can safely say they make some solid stuff. FUCK ENIGMA, THOUGH!
      Cheers, Jesse!

    I wish I was clever enough to purposefully send you hops that annoyed you, but alas, that was not intended; I had no idea what the hop profile was - didn't even try it before I sent it. I bought it primarily because it was a really good value (12pack was about $20), so i figured it was worth a shot. Cheers!

      I figured as much, but if you did it on purpose, it would've been diabolical! Solid NEIPA, and with that price point, it's even better. I wish I enjoyed Enigma hops more because I feel I would've loved this. Oh, well. I appreciate all the beer, brother!
      Cheers!

    I believe, we just got these guys in Maine, noticed the cans yesterday, and i dont think i seen any dates. Got the vibe, that i dont need to be in a hurry to try these guys.

      Honestly, their stuff can be pretty good. On par with some other breweries in the 12 Percent portfolio. Definitely not a brewery you need to run out and try once they show up, but they're pretty consistent overall.
      Cheers, dude!

      @@averagejoe716 I have seen the 12 Percent American Snappy Lager around but I havent picked it up because I couldnt find the date on the packaging of the 12 pack. I know its in 4 packs of 12 oz cans for like 4.99 which is cheap but just give me 2 more cans and charge me a few more bucks instead of that BS, ya know

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  23 дні тому

      I think four packs of 12 fl. oz cans of a low ABv lager makes very little sense. WTF? Yeah, give everyone the extra two beers and charge $5.99 or $6.99. Weird.

    I looked up their distribution in my area. They arent like right outside my door but looks like I can get them less than 30 minutes away. I wouldnt know which of their beers they would have though. Looks like its another one of those companies thats in CT and MA but skips RI like Troegs does but since they started in CT they wouldnt skip it even if its no longer made there.

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  Місяць тому

      Yeah, since they're brewed at 12 Percent in North Haven, CT, they probably follow whatever distro they have. I'll be honest, I've had only a handful of beers from Fat Orange Cat, and I couldn't tell you exactly what I'd look to grab. I think their Baby Kittens is like their flagship IPA, but most of the other offerings are rotating. Weird that so many breweries skip RI, though.
      Cheers, man!

      @@averagejoe716 Yeah I was at a store yesterday that had a bunch of their beers including this one so they clearly dont skip RI, I was wrong. Not like they are at every store in the area though which is why I thought that. I didnt buy any of their offerings but I might some day. None of it looked so appealing where I thought I had to get it.

      That is Fat Orange Cat in a nutshell. Solid to good beer, but nothing you need to grab, and I've probably passed them up numerous times in the pass.

    I really like the idea of sending you a beer mail of all Enigma hopped IPAs as a troll move. 🤣 Would never actually do that.
    I haven’t had a ton of Enigma hopped beers but I seemed to have liked them. I know I had an Everybody Wants Some Enigma
    from Hoof and liked that one, but that was well over 2 years ago. I wonder if it’s polarizing like cilantro, but instead of soap you taste trash.

    • @averagejoe716

      Whatever evil bastard that sends me an all Enigma-laden beer mail ... KARMA IS REAL! LMAO! I'm not sure anybody could round up enough beers with Enigma hops. It'd be funny, though. Not surprised you dig it. It seems like Dan from FLX and myself are two folks that don't care for it. The cilantro analogy makes sense, though. Maybe it's a characteristic that only some folks can pick up on. It really does suck whenever it's intense.
      Cheers, Curtis!

      @@averagejoe716 🤣 I’m envisioning someone sending you that in an unboxing, and immediately after we see a video of Joe at his sink dumping each can down the drain saying, “This is what I think of your beer mail…” Hahaha.
      Yeah that beer I do remember liking but unless a beer was especially good or bad I forget a lot of them. I did have a Dankhouse beer I was liking a month ago. I looked up the hops and Enigma was in it and I remember thinking “Well I’m not getting any garbage flavors like Joe usually does.” so who knows. Funny enough Eukanot and Eclipse are a couple of other hops people can be weird about, so maybe it’s the new age “E” hops. Haha

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  Місяць тому +1

      LMAO ... that would be hilarious! I think it's one of those things where I know it's in the beer, so I'm actively searching for it. I do wonder if someone sent me a Whodunit/Mystery beer with Enigma in it, if I'd figure it out. I feel like I would, but who knows. Ekuanot used to give me green pepper vibes, but I actually dug it. Some folks hated it with a passion. Same goes for Sabro and Nelson. I know quite a few people who hate the coconut that Sabro kicks out, and the diesel that Nelson can put out. Just more proof that beer (and its ingredients) are extremely subjective.

    • @curtisbrause9255
      @curtisbrause9255 Місяць тому +1

      @@averagejoe716 Green pepper. That’s it. I knew there was a distinct flavor but couldn’t remember what it was. I remember the Hop Butcher guys on that podcast I mentioned before saying Eukanot Cryo was a lot different than Eukanot T-90 which had a lot more green pepper. I found that interesting.
      We both love the shit out of Sabro but we both love coconut, and coconut is also highly polarizing. I actually think a smaller amount of Sabro can actually give an IPA a really distinct tropical boost without being as obvious. Emits Showers of Sparks by Hop Butcher (favorite beer from them) and Thank You For Juicing by OH come to mind. Of course, I’m perfectly fine with a single hopped Sabro beer. Man I really wish that Everybody Wants Some from Hoof would have been available when I shipped that beer mail. You would have lost your shit.
      A Whodunnit with Eukanot would be interesting but I’d be shocked if you didn’t pick it out. You obviously don’t want notes of trash in your beer but it’s just what you’re getting out of it. I’m actually kind of curious now. If I see any Eukanot beers next time I go beer shopping I’m going to get one and really think about if it tastes like trash at all to me. Hahaha

    • @averagejoe716
      @averagejoe716  Місяць тому +1

      I think a lot of hops are changing with how they're harvested/produced. Between the T-90 pellets, Cryo, LUPOMAX and others, I feel like they impart different characteristics despite being the same hop, so it makes sense with what you're saying about Ekuanot.
      Yeah, our love for coconut is definitely the driving force. So many people enjoy coconut, but don't want it in their beers (especially the hop-forward ones). I know some friends who really love coconut, just not in IPAs. Makes sense. I would've loved to try that EWS Sabro. I love that series, but we don't see it here anymore. It's a shame.
      Did you mean Enigma and not Ekuanot for the last paragraph? I'd assume so since you said trash. Yeah, search for it the next time you get an Enigma-laced beer. It just has that slightly rotten fruit/trash vibe. Like somebody put rotten fruit in the trash, and it's been stewing for a day or two. You open the lid and you know there's something spoiled in there. It's not THAT intense, but that is the vibe I get.
