    BBC Staff, This was a great, revealing interview. Thank you for providing it. Simpson does a good job (within the anti-Russian pro-NATO paradigm in which he must perform), but the star of the show is Peskov.....Very articulate, along with strong non-verbal communication to the BBC, which to him represents the power elite of the UK---and he is correct.

      @@anonymoustroll4195 Troll: Context: The USA has the Monroe Doctrine, and it also has roughly 700 military bases across the globe. Russia has roughly six bases beyond its border, not counting operational bases in Ukraine and Belarus during the current conflict.
      Russia has sharp red lines along its western periphery, and it would never accept a NATO presence in Ukraine.
      By the same token, we could not accept a Chinese takeover of Mexico, with installation of nuclear cruise missiles in Hermosillo, Durango, and Monterrey.......aimed at the US heartland.

    The 4th world war will be fought with sticks and stones eh?.
    I remember my grandfather telling me that when they liberated Rome after "Monti Cassino" the only person who acknowledged that so called soft underbelly from El Al A main , Tobruk to Rome was Stalin. Something called D Day stole any notice . He left the War with many burns, scars and remembering the doorway remaining into Monti Cassino. Ironically had the Words PAX "peace" above the arch and rubble everywhere else.
    I remembered his words when i saw an exhibition of eastern European cities before and after the war, because i saw that archway in a picture, but what struck me was the life before, the pianists the art the energy of all people, long forgotten..and the contrast after of rotting death. I can only say it is not strength if all this conjecture and posturing is true even to threaten the use of weapons of such unimaginable force..Never Never never should any nation use such terrible weapons upon another people. The shame of being the ones to do so , that mark on humanity . the insanity. "Dulce et decorum est pro patri mori"... PAX our true nationality is mankind and excuse my bluntness but theocratic babble is not useful to reasoned deductive logic and real judgement .

    • @bboucharde
      @bboucharde 9 років тому +6

      PurpleHaze, Here is some of the answer, but not all of it.
      1. The context: If you are an American, it is difficult to imagine (in current times) of 80% of the population of a region rising up and refusing to take orders from Washington. We're talking about numbers like 8 million people in an area comparable to a US state like Minnesota. This is the scale of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine.
      2. So, the separatists are not just a few dozen macho guys in some local bars resisting the Kiev government. ..... Instead, the separatist armed forces are in the thousands, and we suspect that there are many volunteers from Russia (ex-military and retired military).
      3. It is also likely that volunteers have come from Serbia, Crimea, Transnistria, Kazakhstan, and Central Asian Republics and even Russian provinces in the Caucasus.* These people are highly motivated to help out their brothers and sisters in Donetsk & Lugansk, etc. They probably get some financial assistance from wealthy Russians. But all of this is not the official Russian armed forces. *Many Russians still live in these former Soviet areas
      4. As for the weapons, let me go back to the US example. If (for example) 80% of the population of Arkansas and Louisiana rose up and took over those states, they would inherit national guard depots and other weapons storage sites, including heavy weapons. When we say 80%, that includes folks like highway patrol officers, sheriffs, and police---and folks in every occupation.....We haven't seen that scale of resistance in the US since the Civil War, so it is hard to conceive of it.
      5. Also, the Donetsk and Lugansk forces have seized a lot of equipment from the Ukrainian Army, during a number of battles in which the Kiev forces abandoned their heavy equipment.
      6. Finally, I do not doubt that some military equipment is smuggled over the border, too, ..... especially ammo.
      Bottom Line: I highly doubt that official, enlisted forces of the Russian Federation are on the soil of eastern Ukraine at this time, except perhaps some advisers. There are plenty of other willing men who have joined the fight, so Moscow does not need to send in significant forces at this time. ....... However, that could change in 2015, if NATO moves in to central Ukraine.
      If that happens, you want to finish your prepping and get ready for SHTF......because events could escalate very quickly after that----like in August, 1914.

      ***** Jesus, You are correct, and it gets worse: The Ukrainian folks I know tell me that the new Kiev government is just as corrupt as the old one, before the US-backed coup!
      But at least the previous Yanukovych regime knew how to do business with Moscow---and all of Ukraine was at peace.......
      When the USA comes to any country to do a regime change, the blood flows, the bodies hit the pavement, and the cash registers at US defense contractors merrily ring! ...... Like little Christmas bells.......

    • @MegaRagingBunny
      @MegaRagingBunny 9 років тому +2

      Does US bombard the rebel/terrorist positions? Does US provide heavy military assistance? Do professional ACTIVE American soldiers make divisions in Ukraine? How often did therse professional soldiers been captured in unmarked tanks/tranporters in Ukraine?
      Was Crimea occupied by US? Do soldiers (in htousands) die in military bases in america from heart attacks in closed graves?
      The support for Ukraine is poor, so far all that has been given are bulletproof vests and food. I guess those are those "billions", please training camps? for what? Ukrainians have their own army for god sake.
      Who sponsored the coup? ok, i got a better question, who did not sponsor the coup and please provide proof of it.
      The Ukrainian government said that it is legitimate and that it follows the constitution.
      With that there was no coup per say, the parliament was the same, their parliament holds the power. The parliament is elected democratically and by the laws of Ukraine.

    • @Andrew_Warden
      @Andrew_Warden Рік тому

      Yes, the "free man in office" would be "free" to criticize Putin if he chose to do so tomorrow. He'd end up imprisoned or dead. That's not the definition of free. Fast forward to 2023, every "preconception" the journalist came armed with turned out to be true. Independent journalism outlawed while State TV propaganda is the only source of news. The endless list of Putin critics end up exiled, imprisoned, dead, or poisoned by a chemical agent exclusively made in Russia. Russia invades the sovereign nation of Ukraine... and on and on. When a journalist capable of free speech comes armed with facts, the outcome of the verbal gunfight is always predicted. This interview didn't age well for Putin's murderous regime.

      Exactly! Just like if Cuba wanted to host Soviet IRBM's, the US would have no problem with that......Except we nearly had a nuclear war with the USSR over that issue in 1962. (The US reciprocated by removing IRBM's from Turkey.)
      Of course, if either Mexico or Canada had decided to join the Warsaw Pact in 1980, the US would have honored the sovereignty of those nations and not resisted it.......LMAO!!!! Don't make me laugh!!!
      The relationship between Russia and Ukraine is VERY complex, deep, and long (1,000 years). The US and the UK need to stay out of it---or we will stumble into WW3......And, very few Americans would be willing to lose San Diego and Denver to prevent Lugansk and Donetsk from being governed by the ethnic & linguistic Russians who already live there.

    • @Hookooo
      @Hookooo 9 років тому +3

      *****
      You compare NATO to Warsaw Pact, really? (btw Cuba was part of Comecon and plus Mexico was even observer in it, but US never really planned to annex Cuba)
      Ukraine and Russia were brothers until Russia seen that Ukraine is weak and wants other friends too, so it invaded parts of it... (its that simple)
      Cause the Budapest Memorandum its really not only issue between Russia vs Ukraine. (though it wouldnt be anyway in this small planet)
      How about Russia staying out of Ukraine "--- or we will stumble into WW3......"
      Lugansk and Donetsk were governed by Russians btw until the rebels took over the administration buildings, then they were fired....

    • @bboucharde
      @bboucharde 9 років тому +8

      hookah604 Hookah, I absolutely compare NATO to Warsaw Pact..... If any big war between the US and USSR had occurred between the 1950s and 1989, it would have been NATO versus the Warsaw Pact. Both were defense pacts, and my analogy is spot on.
      As for Cuba, from 1899 to the revolution of 1959, Cuba was a semi-autonomus client state of the USA, and the Platt Amendent allowed the US to intervene unilaterally at any time---and required Cuba to release territory to the US for military bases. So, Cuba was a vassal state and economic colony of the USA for more than 60 years. The US did not need to occupy it with troops.....It obeyed Uncle Sam like a lap dog.

    • @bboucharde
      @bboucharde 9 років тому +1

      hookah604 Hookah, You wrote, "Lugansk and Donetsk were governed by Russians btw until the rebels took over the administration buildings, then they were fired...." Answer: No way! They were governed by Kiev, until the US-funded coup overthrew the elected government of Ukraine last winter, and the new regime began threatening the folks in the east, like the incredibly stupid language law, etc.
      .
      Now, after all of this bloodshed and destruction, there is no way that Lugansk and Donetsk can be governed by Kiev (under the current laws) ....There are simply too many differences between western and eastern Ukraine. Lugansk and Donetsk need to become special zones with a binding set of conditions to protect the population from retaliation by Kiev. Otherwise, it will eventually be annexed by the Russian Federation, and western leaders will have to ask themselves if that is worth a world war.....
      It is a frightening situation, and only the most astute and high-quality diplomacy will avoid a military clash, probably in 2015, and probably starting with naval and air incidents between NATO & Russia ....... I am not happy about it! I have to wonder if my grandchildren here in the US will live to adulthood......

    What a pity that Putin can't speak English so good as peskov, putin's humor is hardly translatable. What accent does peskov speak? Rather closer to british but a little American? Where and when did he learn it? As far as i know, peskov worked in turkey in 90s in Russian embassy as secretary and even had an opportunity to translate Yeltsin into Turkish. But English... Putin is advanced in german (as ex-KGB-FSB agent and officer), but hardly he is so fluent in English, he started to learn it when George Bush (j-r) was a president. Am i making a lot of mistakes? English is not my mother tongue

      @@user-pi4us3tt1x You´re funny. Which country has just lost more than 60% of its sales of fossile fuels? Which country is now selling it´s fossile fuels to China and India etc. at a 35-40% discount compared to "real" market prices? Which country has a currency that is currently collapsing and where you can use the banknotes to wipe your butt because they are worthless? Which country is currently having a 10-12% inflation rate? Which country has just raised the interest rate to a stunning 13%, to support their worthless currency?
      - Just a small tip: It is NOT a Western country. Maybe try to guess? I predict that Russian economy will collapse together with the Ruble - and because russians are too incompetent to make hi-tech products themselves - and Western countries won´t deliver hi-tech to Russia - Russia will fall behind many years on the Hi-tech sector, compared to the West. In final addition: There is a massive "brain-drain" from Russia these days, because all the highly educated people in Russia are tired of that little war criminal and they want to live in the West - not in a totalitarian, antidemocratic country like Russia.
