  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg speaks at the “In It to Win It: The Future of Ukraine and Transatlantic Security” panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference, Saturday 17 February 2024.
    🎤 Christiane Amanpour, CNN
    🗣️ NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg
    🗣️ Kaja Kallas, Prime Minister of Estonia
    🗣️ Pete Ricketts, US Senator
    🎤 Christiane Amanpour:
    For you Secretary General, NATO has said, and actually key Defence Ministers from the frontline countries, have said that you are concerned for the first time. This wasn’t the case last year, that within three to five years even, Putin could test the resolve of a NATO country.
    🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
    We can never take peace for granted, but I think it is important to convey that we don't see any imminent threat against any NATO Ally. The world has become more dangerous, but NATO has become stronger. And the purpose of NATO is to prevent war, is to ensure that there is no room in Moscow for any miscalculation about NATO's readiness and resolve to protect all Allies. And to make it clear that an attack on one Ally will trigger the response from the whole Alliance. And as long as we convey that message, clearly to Moscow, no Ally will be attacked. So our deterrence remains credible and therefore we don't see any military threat against any NATO Ally.
    🎤 Christiane Amanpour:
    Can I ask you to pick up on the progress that NATO nations are making in what you’re all demanding for more defence spending?
    🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
    In 2014, NATO made the very important decision, triggered by Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea and also NATO Allies after years of reducing defence spending, we had to start to increase defence spending. And that was at the NATO Summit in Wales. I remember I was there. And I thought this was just another pledge by politicians and I made that international meeting and [thought] not so much was going to happen.
    The reality is that a lot has happened because since then, all NATO Allies have increased defence spending. This year, we expect 18 Allies to meet the 2% guideline, spend 2% of GDP on defence. That's up from three [Allies] in 2014. That's a significant increase, meaning that in total European Allies and Canada have added 600 billion [dollars] extra for defence. And those Allies which are not yet at 2% have plans in place to be there very soon. So there is an enormous difference and the European Allies have really stepped up because they realise that there is need to invest in high-end capabilities, have more readiness of our forces. And NATO has implemented the biggest reinforcements on collective defence in generations with battlegroups, combat troops in the eastern part of the Alliance for the first time in our history, with high readiness, more forces, and now total new defence plans. So I’m not saying everything is fine. I agree that Europeans have to do even more, but they're really on track to something which is demonstrating a commitment of all Allies that need to stand together.
    🎤 Christiane Amanpour:
    Can you today be certain that NATO can defeat Russia, if it comes to that? All we're hearing is that you're not ramped up enough. You don't have enough to do what you need to do in Ukraine, much less if you were to confront Russia, and you've said that if he steps on your territory, every single inch will be defended.
    🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
    NATO is the strongest military power in the world today. We represent 50% roughly of the world's total military might. And militarily, we are stronger than Russia.
    But at the same time, I think the war in Ukraine has demonstrated that there are some serious gaps. For instance, when it comes to sustainment, it’s one thing to have all the advanced weapons systems, but they need spare parts, they need maintenance, and obviously they need ammunition. And in the beginning of the war in Ukraine, we depleted our stocks, but now they are running quite low. So now we are focusing extremely, on how to ramp up production. We have some good news. There are new factories being set up. Production has increased but there’s an urgent need to do more.

    I beg to disagree. It is not the United States or democracy that are “messy”. It is a group of people within a political party in the United States that is working against everything that the free world stands for, and everything that authoritarian regimes ever dreamed of.

    The majority of US population, and representatives, still continue to support Ukraine!! Our problem is a tiny group of conservative radical right has tied up US spending for Ukraine in the HOUSE. If the aid is put up for a vote it would pass overwhelmingly. That is why the radical right will not let it be put up for a vote. There are ways around them, but it takes time.

    Just so that this senator understands that the US southern border problem is nothing compared to Europe refugees problem ..." The number of forcibly displaced and stateless people in Europe rose to 21.8 million by the end of 2022, including almost 12.4 million refugees, 1.3 million asylum-seekers, 7.2 million internally displaced people and 474,000 who were stateless. Also, for now the European countries may have to be the countries who carry the burden until the US can get there. We will come as we have always so carry on until we can join you in the fight. We’re otherwise occupied in other fights right now. Ultimately we will all prevail because we bring justice.

    I fully support a defensive alliance. We are clear on the fact that we do not want to attack other countries. Russia is for the Russians, China for the Chinese but Ukraine is for the Ukrainians and Taiwan for the Taiwanese, so the US for the Americans. The best interest for the US is to solidify NATO and encourage NATO be independent too. Yes, borders are important in the US. Poland understood that so do we, however we must protect those who are democratic and believe in free comerse. Evil prevails if good man does nothing. We must defend our society from autocracy, authoritarianism, dictatorship, tyranny and mysticism. This is why we must draw the line and align with a defensive alliance.

    • @MTMF.london
      @MTMF.london 2 місяці тому

      You may not like it but it is true. Unlike in dictatorships, democratically elected leaders don't have absolute powers to decide what to do. They have to go through established rules and laws of the land. In the US, that means decisions have to be passed by both houses of Congress and some times the Party in power does not have control of both houses - that is exactly what is happening right now.

    Kallas were right on the point there, huge props to her for actually putting that U.S. Senator on the spot! It's rather insane that we as europeans have to convince republicans in the US that supporting Ukraine is good business for them. It's shameful that it needs to be adressed that way when Ukrainians are dying and suffering to defend their country against a ruthless and cynical invasion. Does nobody remember the terror that happened in Bucha and Mariupol, as well as all the other horror happing to the tortured people of Ukraine? I'm actually both baffeled and sickened by the eco-political game that goes on. Shame on us for not stepping up as needed, instead we are repeating Chamberlain's appeasement strategy. Enough is enough, Russia needs to be dealt with NOW! Sincerely, a consearned Norwegian citizen

    The challenge facing the Europeans is to convince Americans that Europe is, in fact, actually stepping up. It was jarring to watch Kaja Kallas talk about an existential threat to her country versus Sen. Ricketts' talk about illegal immigration - as if these were somehow comparable. But this goes to show you how far Americans have moved on the issue of European security. A sizable minority of Americans don't really sympathize with Europe's plight. The narrative that Europeans are not doing enough for their own security has been circulating *unchallenged* in Conservative circles for at least 20 years. The idea has become ingrained, and it was bolstered by multiple administrations urging Europeans to spend more, but without having much success. So, when Europe is now in need, sadly, many Americans feel that, security-wise, Europe has not been a good friend, you know, that type of friend who suddenly shows up with a big ask after ignoring your needs for years. Europe's challenge is to change this attitude. 2.5 to 3% of GDP across the board would help.

    The US senator keeps going about the 2%. He seems to forget that Europe is paying indirectly the US for all this. Sanctions have increased the already high energy prices, Europe is importing US LPG which is not cheap. So Europe has to contend with an already high expenditure that finds difficult to justify to their people. He said, arguably, the the US is a democracy, well in Europe we are true democracies not just a republican democracy and there a high percentage of right wing parties that would prefer to support putin and these are increasing in popularity. Still Europe is supporting Ukraine and still taking are of their millions of escapees from the war, in addition to the millions of refugees from US led wars like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria. I guess the 20 year war in Afghanistan must have costed quite a bit to all these NATO countries and that was the result of the US invoking article 5.

    • @MTMF.london
      @MTMF.london 2 місяці тому

      He also forgets or, more worryingly, does not know that the defence funding (whatever the percentage of GDP) that most European and NATO countries spent ends up in the pockets of US military-industrial complex. US have the highest concentration of defence sector companies that produce munitions and advanced weapons systems that are in turn bought by these countries for their security and defence.

    As far as I know, Mr Alexei Navalny is dead, but Mr Julian Assange is still alive. Do you have any opinion about his arrest? Do you know what crime Assange committed?

    Being able to watch this NATO News today, I feel all Europeans including Ukraine, with this delayed US Congress’ decision on continuing financial assistance to Ukraine’s War; feel the US(Washington Gov’t) have changed as a World democratic leader, who use to help any country(in time of need,) to a selfishly-thinking US.

    If Russia is not stopped and if America doesn't play its role gradually America may loose its world leadership and US Dollar may also loose its acceptance all over the globe in course of time and that may the end of American financial leadership. Americans need to understand this act responsibly.

    America not looking very good at this point. Using Ukraine as a political pawn to negotiate immigration policy is actually wrong. More over you’re lecturing a continent that has also struggled with overwhelming migration and now houses refugees from Ukraine? Taking 2 weeks off in the midst of crisis? Lecturing others to increase defence spending when they have at this point given more support to Ukraine than has US? Also UK & EU have led the way in providing tanks, long range attack weaponry and commitment to provide F-16 fighter airframes? US has supplied allot of arms but as a percent of available supply maybe not? NATO members need to do more yet US is no longer in position to “lecture “ but maybe it’s time to walk the talk instead.
