Lyrics:
It took me 16 years to find ya, 1 second to love ya, 7 years to hold ya, 1 minute to lose ya
Oh god
Where did I go wrong
Oh god
Do you remember?
All of the nasty sh*t you used to do with me
Cuz I remember everything
And do you remember?
When we hopped the P and B to nyc
You were only 17
But that puppy love is over
We’re so much older
Nothings ever gonna feel the same way
That it did when we were younger
I wish that I could hold ya
Baby I know its over
Were never gonna feel it again
It took me 16 years to find ya, 1 second to love ya,
7 years to hold ya, 1 minute to lose ya
Oh god
Where did I go wrong
Do you remember?
When I was your king? And you were my queen
Cuz I remember everything
And do you remember?
When you told me you were holding
My future kid and all the joy that that would bring
Well I thought I was a father
But baby is not my daughter
Cuz baby’s a different color
And baby im not a brother
It was just too much to swallow
You ripped my heart out
But that puppy love is over
We’re so much older
Nothings ever gonna feel the same way
That it did when we were younger
I wish that I could hold ya
Baby I know its over
Were never gonna feel it again
It took me 16 years to find ya, 1 second to love ya,
7 years to hold ya, 1 minute to lose ya
Oh god
Where did I go wrong
And I’ll say, i'm sorry if I ever see you again
Cuz on that day I walked away
Probably when you needed a friend
It took me 16 years to find ya, 1 second to love ya,
I don’t trust you, but I still love you
Oh god, where did I go wrong?
It took me 16 years to find ya, only a second to love ya,
7 years to hold ya, just 1 minute to lose ya
Oh god
Where did I go wrong
Where did you go
Where did we go wrong

"I don't trust you
But I still love you"
Fuck man. These lines just put me in tears.
When your in that place those words will haunt you every day
I know so true the words in the song
FUCK your right
I don't trust you but I love you
Same. But luckily trust can be rebuilt, and nothing is truly over if two people love eachother unconditionally.
Found somewhere online:
"16" tells the heartbreaking true story of Highly Suspect frontman Johnny Stevens falling in love for the first time at 16 years old. After seven years together, his girlfriend told him the joyful news she was pregnant with their baby. However, at the moment of the birth, Stevens was devastated to learn that the baby was a different race and therefore wasn't his.
Oh wow I couldn’t tell by the lyrics of the song.....

Holy crap! I am exhausted! I have been searching for this song for 3 years. Heard one time on the radio and it has stuck with me all this time! Great song! So happy I found it!!! Yay!!!
The band is the best in the last decade imo all of their stuff is good
3 years ok song only Bern out for 2
I just went through the same thing! Was driving me insane searching! Love this song
You prob already know this now but just in case you dont.... when you hear a song on the radio or TV and you want to know who it is...ask Google or siri. Say hey google...whats the name of this song? U can even hum the song or say the few lyrics you know. I often take the 1 or 2 verses I can remember and type them into a search bar on Google and it always finds it. Or if you know who it is and the chorus but not the actual song name, do the same thing, type into a Google search.
Do yourself a favor and see them live. The show at the Ryman was legendary
The symbolism behind him looking like hes going to rob a bank shows the viewer how much he didn't belong in that scene. Almost like everyone knew he didn't belong there, he stood out so much out of place. The mask is basically his guard, he let it down and sure enough he knew he shouldn't of.
Good explanation. Makes more sense. thanks
Yo highly suspect is that you Bro?
Thats brilliant
Excellent
Right! Hence why before the kid was even born everyone looked at him like wtf you doing here?? Good explanation even better song!
He went inside dressed in full riot gear, expected him to rob a bank, but she's the one who dropped the bomb on everyone. Alot of symbolism and I love it.
This almost seems as though it's him reliving the event in his memory, and Johnny is steeling himself for what is about to happen. Could have been a traumatic moment in his life that he has since "ascended" from, or moved on from. Still absolutely loving this video!
This is why i like reading the comment section. Everyone has a different perspective
Tragic...

"And I'll say, I'm sorry if I ever see you again, cause on that day I walked away, when you probably needed a friend" are we just going to ignore the most powerful line in the song, especially given the context?
Dude floated up like the start of a villain origin story

This song is so sad and beautiful, and it has several aspects. Right now there is a ten-year-old (approx?) who was loved as his child, but lost that when being born. I hope the child got to know the real father and is loved.

You can hear the emotion in his voice in this song...love this tune.
Most songs this powerful are written with pain. I just love this song
He's so talented his voice just speaks to your heart
The singer of Highly Suspect is super talented, and you can definitely tell his emotions are purely put on pad and paper and sung for us to feel. In the 2016 song "Little Ones", he even says, "How long must I justify my pain through these songs?" Powerful stuff. He's been putting all of his emotions in his music for a long time now. And I love the band for that.

I actually think the mask symbolises he's emotions and how when he pulls the mask down he's letting he's guard down and showing he's emotions and once he realises the baby isn't he's he puts the mask back up so nobody can see how he feels once again

The first time i heard this song, i knew it had to be true. The pure emotion coming through is devastating. I hurt for them. Unbelievable pain... I'm so sorry this happened, Johnny.
Probably the best band to come out in last 10 years. IMO. Also this song is my love letter.hits home so much. Love these guys. Lyrics and vocals on point
Besides 16, this album is atrocious. They're a great band but come on.
This song hits me hard and deep, I never really listened to the second verse and what it was saying until I saw the video. I went through the exact same thing, about two years ago, I was with a girl that cheated on me and I found out later on after I realized that she was pregnant. She swore up and down the kid was mine, we were going to stay together and I forgave her and decided that we were going to have a life together, until the baby came out. Whenever he goes into the hospital wearing all of this protective armor and bandana over his face means that he has put his guard up because he is scared of the outcome. It's his emotional armor. At the end he pulls down the bandana while she's giving birth because he let his guard down and his emotions got the best of him. But yet when the baby comes out , he is lifted into the air because he realizes that he is free from that point. He is free from her games, he is free from that life at that point. And whenever he hits the ceiling he pulls the bandana up because he has put up his emotional armor yet again. So no one can see the real him, no one can penetrate through to him. Stuff like that can really change a man. I still struggle with letting anybody into my psyche, and letting my guard down so that someone can see the real me so I can actually be in a real relationship.
I took the part where everybody was lifted as a metaphor for how everything thing they thought to be true was something completely different so I can imagine how it could've been incredibly difficult to separate reality from the lies and wonder if anything they had was real.
It's awful that happenned to you. I can't imagine what that's like. I went through a painful breakup and dealt with death at the same time, but hands down, you win. Hope you're doing better
@@dootdoot94xo44 On which planet ?
TL:DR
Thank you for putting this in perspective and I'm so sorry you had to go through this!! I hate that people can't be real and mature anymore...this goes for lying, cheating and abuse! She gave birth to tinker bell lol magic dust everywhere, everyone flying
The symbolism in this video is amazing. Most the video's today seem to miss the purpose or meaning of the song. Like it's telling two different stories. But this one - I think it really captures the imagery while not taking away from the music itself. Awesome job and excellent song.

piece of epic I know. I just honestly wanted to see more of him and the girls past. I did end up checking out more of their music. California dreaming is a great one. I think that's what it's called. Y3ah its really good stuff. The thing about 16 is that when you,re young you,re a different kind of person. Then you grow a few years and find that you both have grown in different directions. Only thing we taking a peek at is all the terrible shit Johnny’s been putting out lately lmao
@@venom088 omg , i love them, but i must agree
L MMM remember when he was a likable, charming, unbelievably promising rock star? That chip on the shoulder really changed things I’m afraid. Also, I’m not into dudes but Johnny was a good lookin mother fucker if you look at the Seratonia video.....and then you compare it to this..... wtf happened?
Albert Pike i do know whats it like thinking she having my baby and it not being my baby! I know what it is like also to walk into my own home to a dude screwing the mother of my child! I know his pain, I know it far to well! I know to never trust a woman again! This song hits hard for me! I relate to it greatly! Life I guess!
L MMM so do I but yeah it’s like they’re TRYING to put out subpar stuff lately. Even in their live shows I hear that now they pause in the middle of songs to say some b.s like goddamn what a fall from grace
Who else was waiting for the black baby to come out haha 😂😂
Black Jesus was born on that DAY!!!!!!! RISE FOR THE NEW LORD
Notyourbiggestfan me
Lol me 😂
Yep
MCID - My Child Is Dark
They float because they "hit the ceiling" with the revelation that it wasn't his child.
The way he says "oh God"
Feeellttt 💯
"When you told me you were holding
My future kid and all the joy that that would bring
Well I thought I was a father
But baby is not my daughter
Cuz baby’s a different color
And baby im not a brother
It was just too much to swallow
You ripped my heart out"
YIKES, what a bummer.
Did u add that part cause he didn't say that, which either way is pretty good
@@crystalmo6582 they added the lyrics in the description.
I know, it's tough giving birth to a primordial being that
reigns supreme over laws of physics
They censored this whole piece of lyrics and more on my local radio station...
For those wondering, it's at 1:55
It’s Carl’s crazy girlfriend from shameless
Dakota Kesterson yes it is 😂
Weird side note but did she get killed on shameless or what? She got "taken care of" by (I think his name is Carl) drill kids...
This is Johnny's actual pregnant GF
Erik Anderson yeah she did
I fucking knew she looked familiar
it took me 16 secs to get addicted to this song-!!!
Anyone else got goosebumps listening to this..
super emotional
"Oh godd... where did I go wrong!?"
Live life to the fullest and be faithful man. We can all make this rock a better place with honesty and real trust.
Stay real y'all.
absolutely
One of the realest comments ever
Live life. Take chances. Love. Lose. Do everything you can. Bcsuae one day, you could wake up on a ventilator, and your life will be over at 27. I regret every chance I didn't take. Now I'm 30, disabled my art is terrible because I have atrophied hands. Always always take chances. You never know when you won't be able to anymore.
Still taking shots though this song makes me remember my past a lot this shit hits deep
Nobody want to hear that but need to apply it
It’s sickening how much emotion this song brings with it! 💔
Highly suspect you all rock y'all have some of the best music I've ever heard I'm 60 years old and I can dig it and keep on rocking
I heard this song on radio, I was hooked! Fav song. His voice is one of kind
this brings back memories and the song wasn’t even out when the memories were made 😔😕
So relatable I'm sure as many other people. I love it.
True true my friend💯💯💯
@@priscillaperez1605 What? The fuck? How is this relatable?
@@althealligator1467 I'm sorry I do not understand.... Why would it matter to you what I think. I was just saying what I think which none of it was bad.
@@althealligator1467 also how is you trolling people on what they say any good? You have not even commented on the song, only on what I posted.
These words "Where did I go wrong" meant so much after being w/ my husband of 35 years, him not loving me as I did him. Wow beautiful lyrics, continue the creativity & art for peeps like me feeling so much pain Ure voice says it all....
Skye the world is a wonderful place and you'll find Yours. Keep that Head up and Your ❤️ safe.
@Porcelain Throne She might have. Thirty five years is a long time...
This song hits different when you yourself can relate to the lyrics.
I heard this song 2 years ago on radio and for 2 years I been singing it in my head and never had time to try to find it. Now 2 years after I finally found it I am so happy.
Holyshit!!! Never noticed this...
"When you told me you were holding my future kid? Ay
And all the joy that that would bring
Well I thought I was the father
But baby, it's not my daughter
'Cause baby's a different color
And baby, I'm not a brother"
Ouch!!! A painful way to learn she cheated...
Curious: How do you not notice that?
One particular part of the brain - the superior temporal sulcus (STS) - responds to Songs. Now in the middle of the STS, the lyrics and tune are being processed as a single signal. But in the anterior STS, only the lyrics are being processed.
This may be because no individual, complex processing occurs for melody.
The brain first deals with music and lyrics together. Then, after passing through the mid-STS more complex processing kicks in, such as understanding what lyrics mean, and the two are treated separately. And the more they are processed, the more they are separated,
So, probably the same way it happens to everyone else. One listens to the song but doesn't actually hear all the lyrics until they've heard it a few times.
Peace
@@TA-tg1cf I suppose I could've just said I'd been passively listening to the song prior to actively listening to the song and recognizing what the lyrics were saying, but then what would you have learned? lol
@@2xkiller lmao 😅😁 I heard it, Idk.. 🤷🏼😏
I also sang the lyrics to the beat/melody... AT THE SAME TIME 😯😮💁🏼😏😜✌🏼
over here waiting for a black child to come out instead of light
😂😂😂
The light represents illumination or truth. The loss of gravity is everyone's world gone. So, there's no gravity to hold them down.
Nathan Plimpton cool 👍
Nathan Plimpton, I like you.
Me too!!! Reading all of the comments on here is way more interesting than watching that video tho!!! Holy shit
I heard this song one time on the radio and I cried for the first time in SIXTEEN YEARS
That's so true. .that puppy love IS OVER ..and it won't ever feel like it did when we was younger****
The dude absolutely has such a outstanding voice, love his music!
The way he's singing in this song compared to all the others (Even tho they are amazing songs) i feel like he should make more songs this clear and raw talent, he has a really good voice and this show's it. i'm looking forward to you making more songs in this style because I've had this song on repeat for a week now.
Kraken Roadkill ever heard Chicago?
The Phoenix has risen
That cry at the end that the actress did when she realized she would lose her love forever because of a stupid mistake or one night stand. That's what I felt from it. The feeling of absolute regret and realizing she will be haunted by this loss for the rest of her life. Like the feeling of realizing you accidentally killed someone. wow
