Lyrics:
We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fu**in' slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
(Hook)
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "don't worry about a thing, baby doll I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "goddamn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door.
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
(Hook)
I've seen a rich man beg I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win and a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad and the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start
I knew this kid named Max who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late he liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

This song came out when I was 19. I am now 43 and have lived every word of this song. Don't ever judge someone, you have no idea the burdens they are carrying. Be kind. To others and to yourself.
I just posted almost the same thing.
We were young and dumb 25 years ago.
Now we are grown up and this song hits too close to home.
Many died from drug addictions, suicide, etc.

Born in 86... 38 now... This song is timeless
It’s good to judge. Judging others is important. Judging another person may very well keep you from getting robbed or murdered.
Wrong. You have no idea who anyone is until they show you. Judging people ends up harming all parties involved. I am old enough to know better, maybe one day you will be as well.@@AjninHaru
I will listen to this song until the day I die

There used be a woman I knew back when I was 20 years old. I liked her alot. She used to hang out with my friends and I but I was super shy. So I found out one night that she loved this song. I also loved this song. Over the weeks I would play this song whenever she was around to get her to come and ask who was controlling the music/who owned the ipod. Eventually we started connecting. 11 years later we are still married and happier than ever. I owe almost everything great in my life to this song.
EDIT: 2 years later we are still married and so happy together. This comment thread is honestly my greatest internet memory. Everytime yall comment it reminds of this awesome memory I have. Cheers!

The best cure for depression is helping someone else. Seeing the joy on your face when you change someone’s life, is addictive. You’re gonna want it again. Joy is contagious.

This song is a timeless testament to a fundamental truth of humanity. Life is fucked up for a lot of people, but if we take the time to understand each other, then none of us is ever truly alone.

Ain't that the truth 🤙🏼🤙🏼
I remember listening to this song with my dad in the early 2000s. He passed away sadly due to an accidental overdose while I was in a treatment center for opiates. I remember leaving the service and sitting down with some roommates of mine breaking down crying. Out of nowhere my house manager comes into the room, picks up the guitar, and starts playing this song. This is the only song I would ever tie to my father especially on an acoustic guitar. It took me back instantly to riding in my fathers truck and him showing me all of his favorite songs. I never believed in any sort of afterlife or anything spiritual until after that moment. I knew that was my fathers way of saying everything will be alright and I will never forget it. I love and miss you so much papa and I hope you're looking down at me proud....
Thx for ur testimony, keep up well.

I'm 63 and resonate with everything in this song. My husband and I now sing it at our shows.
I have mental illness and they just don't know how much praise God for u
I have been homeless and pregnant and 15 and nothing to eat, my son was born 2 months early and under weight. I kept both of my children, they are every fiber of my being. So when you see a homeless person or a young pregnant girl down on their luck please don't just pass them by and please don't judge. God bless.
And the thing that irritates me the most is at Christmas the wealthy will help a homeless person, pat themselves on the back, then spend the rest of the year complaining about them. I make $400/month as a caregiver for my disabled sister. I STILL help the homeless all year long. Once a month, I go find one, and help however I can. Not patting myself on the back. I could be one of them any minute.

Amen brother! From America.
My mom always played this song after my dad passed, she said it had a bigger meaning. I never fully understood. He was a good man that got lost and didn’t have anyone to help him when he needed it. I listen to it a lot to remind myself we all have our own paths and struggles. Him and this song taught me to never judge someone, but to offer my help.
Is your father no longer with us?
That's deep we all have our struggles
I can relate
My mom was the same and shes gone now

"Seen a Rich man beg, seen a good man sin, and seen a tough man cry. Seen a looser win and a sad man grin, heard an honest man lie." This line hit me hard. Reminds us all to stay humble. "I heard an honest man lie" really set the tone.

@@michellebeckstrom6110 hand off to us as you have already
I've heard this song on the radio countless times, but I never listened to what he is saying until just now.
This song is actually an amazing way of getting across the point that you should never label someone, or a group of people based on what you think you know about them, You need to try to view things from their perspective, and understand you do not have the full picture of that person's life which has lead them to the state you see them in.
When u know ppl it's no longer judgement. No matter their bs tactics. After so many tactics, it's just a whole bunch of sh tactics. But It's more I don't even think God hands out that much forgiveness. I think if it's strangers it still applies tho. Y u always lying

What an underrated song.
Empathy. Some believe only humans have it because we are made in the image of God. God is love.
Yet some of the same people believe that to act on empathy encourages weakness in others. That helping the poor encourages laziness. God helps those who help themselves! Losing your job because your car broke down too many times is simply evidence of some sort of moral weakness, not in fact a lack of the safety-net of money and family that people who lack empathy assume everyone has. You can't afford an apartment? Well, simply get a higher-paying job! So simple!
Seriously, God forbid you should ever walk a mile in someone else's shoes. You might actually feel that YOU deserve empathy.
One of the greatest songs ever

@@vaskylark I think a song, a piece of literature, a movie or whatever, can present or open a person up to a new perspective. THE MOST HONEST LINE IN THIS SONG, talking about all the high scale experience he's had... " You know where it ends usually depends on where you start." Just the raw insight that he knows where he came from, how fortunate he is and his eyes are still open to everything around him regardless.
But also sees everyone around him going though the things they are while being judged. And they don't know what's its like...till they have been in there shoes!! Best song ever ❤
That's very interesting to me, because I always thought he was referencing that statement to his relationship experience... You know...-like if you start a relationship with a gorgeous cheater, after "helping" them cheat on their lover... In the future they are definitely going to cheat on you. Or you on them. Or both. Or the relationship will just end because you can never fully trust each other. But now that I've lived a little longer, I've met couples who started, "dirty"
... And are still together to this day. So, who really knows. But it's beautiful how these lyrics stir the souls of everyone here enough to type about it. 🙂
@@stevie3821 right on
@@cuccarachaa5722 I’ve never even considered this lyric to be about a relationship, but it totally can. However, I think using the lyric in a general sense so that it can apply to every interpretation is what he was going for. Thank you for posting.

I think it's underrated because it's demonstrates the reality that bad decisions can cost you everything, including your life.
12years ago ended up homeless
slept on a piece of cardboard in a vacant field every night spent half the day or more (flying a sign) to get enough money for a nik of weed and a 4 pack of naty ice
spent the rest of the day getting wasted just to ease the pain
spent 4 years doin that
had enough started to reach out to get help
spent another 4yrs finding out how fu@ked up and dysfunctional the homeless support system is
got off my ass and started my own (program)
spent another 4yrs working my Program
and with a little help from the good lord above

Truly it proves we are all one family clor be damned
This song teaches a valuable lesson. Be humble and respect everyone including those who you dont know because you dont k ow what they went through or are going through currently. God bless yall
The only lesson this teaches is how useless god is
The message here: don’t judge or harm people who are down. They have enough struggles as it is. If you can’t help them, pray for them, if you can’t pray for them leave them alone.
Praying is a sad excuse for an attempt to help someone
T Laut, I agree. Prayer is useless and empty. It never stopped any war, it never miraculously cured any disease or fed any starving children ect. It’s just a way for people to FEEL like they’re doing something without having to actually do anything.
Never look down on anybody because yu never know when yu could be in same situation. I think we all need to help each other- praying?? Ya my praying isn’t going to help somebody who hasn’t eaten in days, or no place to go- maybe it makes me feel better because I think “I’m doing something to help”??
Well said
Folks, I think many didn’t quite understand my comment. I stated if you can’t (the key word here is can’t ) leave them alone. I wasn’t encouraging anyone or imposing my view or opinion upon anyone. Prayer is something I do. I don’t judge your methods or principles so chilly chill chill! Lol. Be well everyone!
This video needs to be re birthed for all the world to soak it in. So much insight to true struggles many of us know all too well.
This song is timeless

Listening experiencing never thought someone would ever be able to help up look at both sides each time this song gets heard and the video seen
I can myself see this daily
The amount of emotion Eric is able to churn up in words is never to be forgotten.
I don't care how old this song is, it never gets old.
This song is so true. I saw a man sleeping on the sidewalk today. I brought him back a sandwich a drinks and told him Jesus loves him.....everyone standing around him at the bus stop looked shocked. No one seems to help or care anymore. May we lead by example.❤
@Anderson Paak funny, but you missed her point.
That was a nice thing to do?
@@garyshissler4243 Why not? :)
Tuff love is the solution to that problem. I was homeless for 3 months. The only person who going to get me out of that situation is me.
@@joshuaa.kennedy8837 Fair enough - interesting perspective. Glad you're good now (at least, I hope you are)! Possibly different people benefit from different things though? 🤔
Edit: oops! I replied because I thought you were the guy above. My bad!!
I met everlast at a subway in studio city, he was a really down to earth guy. True legend.
Thanks for being so nice to me everlast, because your music changed my life.
The dude was the first artist for ice t to sign and promote with his 'rap syndicate' label and not just the first 'white' rqpper chosen had a lot to do with helping a lot of other dudes get there respect due. Eminem has aged like some clown shit and evalast is just getting more iconic and legendary. That real slim shady track from icp, necro, evalast etc, was fuckin funny as and is only g9nna come from real artists and independent labels who don't give a fuck about the profit margins, the same way 5hey care about their product or integrity and yw can't not respect that. He is in la coca nostra, with dudes like ill bill and vinny paz which is just one example of the many independent and real productions hes been a part of and still is. Dude obviously aims doing it for the money when it doesn't exist and the albums just bring scrutiny and problems for himself. Thats someone we should all look up to
Split the truth ... good lyrics great song hits the heart!
KING QUEEN
Love this man, gives me the chills from my soul

I've seen a loser win and a sad man grin, I've heard an honest man lie'

TRUTH!
I dont need to say who I am...I all know..just food for thoughts.. Many can say I'm wrong for the things I say or do, can you all go through all I have in the last 3 yrs and still be alive and well? Im no different than any of you.. I bleed the same as any of you. Im not saying that I haven't thought wrong or did wrong. If I could get what money I had coming to me before I went to prison. I could easily forget the past and move on... I'm, just not willing to walk away from money that I had owed for 19 yrs..child support, stocks, bonds, shares in companies + more...im broke my health is shitty and for the first time in my life I wanted a decent life to live and relax..How is that so damn wrong?
@george blunders I'm in need of some green right now...i feel like nothing really matters to me anymore...ive treated my enemies better than others been treating there family can't we all just get along
Hey it's lost ma

Stay moving forward and never forget where you come from so you don't lose sight on where your heading. Be free my humans Be free.
Nice pic grey hair. Thank you. So much love. I was a homeless vet. It still hurts. Worse than combat bro. Thank you.
Song hits different when you had everything lost everything and gaining it back💯🙏🙌
I was homeless when this song came out . It kept me out of trouble. I was a user of different kinds of drug. Not now I met a beautiful kind hearted person who helped me get away from the drugs and garbage of the homeless life . Now where married and going on are 22nd anniversary but been together for 28 years. Iam glad I met her shes my life my rock and my best friend. Love you so much Samantha
That's Wonderful that how the L9rd brought you two together....
You should never forget that you were homeless once and never disrespect anyone that is homeless no matter what they are doing to get their needs met.
The homeless population is roughly 90 + percent males and they are the ones that for the most part refused to be pussy whipped and bowed down
This is is a beautiful testimony. 🥺🥰 Truly. It's amazing the impact words, spoken or sung is song, can be to a person. This song means so much to me. It's saved me, and now I live a comfortable life. More so than the average person. I'm 33 and don't have to work. But I don't let this change me. This song is a reminder that we are all people, and all people are worthy of love. It's my reminder to always be the kind, giving, and helpful person I have always been. It's my reminder that I'm no different than the homeless mother with her children barely surviving in their car that barely works. That I'm no different than the millionaire down the road from me. I vowed to always help people when I can, and I do to this day, thanks to the things that remind me to stay true to myself, like this song. ❤️ I love how much you adore your sweet Samantha. You can see it just by hoe you type about her.
I'm glad life is good for you
💘🙏
This is one of those songs that is so perfect in message, music and arrangement that it will never get old. Will live forever.

This man's lyrics really tell the story
My mama put me out of my house when I was 13 I had no clue what life was about I'm 56 years old now now I know
Bless your heart...i can relate to these lyrics as well...❤
I'll never forget being a young boy walking into the record store at the mall with my father who hates anything made after 1985 in the music world and hearing him ask the clerk for the new everlast cassette I thought it was for one of my cousins as a gift until I seen him ripping it open in the parking lot and literally walking briskly to get to his caddy to put this song on I was literally blown away. It just proves good music is good music
That's right, I'm 61, your dad is dead on, LOL. You are right. Good music, is good music. Ask your dad about an 8 track. LOL
It’s very difficult to find a hit from 99 with 3 timeless facts
1. the Video is still on Point
2. the Beat is still on Point
3. the Verses is still on Point
This is a timeless hit 🙏🏼
Your synopsis is on point....
Word
Truth!
@Jay Leno that depends on the context. With this song, yeah... Its sucks that it's still on point, but it is. It can also be a good thing. It can bring awareness.
Jay Leno dont get me wrong I don’t know much about your country! I’m from Germany and just saying that this track is Timeless! I watched a lot of 99-00 chart breaker videos and then I found this! For me it’s nice to see some old memories about 99-00 but it’s hard to find a track what is timeless like this one! The quality is amazing
Just remember Jesus was homeless too,he knows exactly what's going on . Basically what I'm saying is, don't give up, make it your Creed.
Thank you, so true
