- Chip shows us his take on the 2021 BMW M3's controversial front-end. The new BMW M3 coupe and M4 sedan are, well, not without their detractors. Most of that venom is directed at their new face, which takes BMW’s historic kidney grilles to new lows: The new grilles droop far below the bumper’s centerline, making a face with the same oversized grille treatment as so many other high-end, luxury/performance vehicles.

Chip just shredded the entire BMW design team with a Bic pen that he found in a hotel.
Interesting enough the difference between expensive ballpoint and a “bank pen” isn’t the roll or ink, it’s the durability and the ability to use refillable ink wells and the quality and durability of the pen tip/barrel.
He’s that good - they destroyed the facia with this stupid looking grille - I would buy Chip’s version in a heart beat but I’m having a real problem digesting the new models. For the first time in 20 years I may have to go Audi - and that breaks my heart

@@divisionplusbeatz you can put lipstick on a pig, but it will still be a pig. He traced the original design before adjusting some of the more flawed areas. I agree it hasent got the class of an E46, but it sure is an improvement on what the in house team managed

@@-Sirens- Well they do keep randomly renewing it lol, so it might be back soon. They canceled it in 2012, brought it back in 2015, canceled it in 2016 and brought it back again in 2019 and canceled it again.

Agreed. Splitting the bottom grill openings actually makes them look like a continuation of the upper grills, and that's exactly what we're trying to get away from.
feels like car designers have fallen out of love with clean surfaces. Everybody just keeps adding openings and lines and angles for no apparent reason

The designer of Mercedes SLS mentioned the simplicity of lines and shapes as the concept he took.

Nowadays the designers just slappin lot of sharp lines and call it 'aggressive' I mean take a look at FK8 civic tho...
Fake vents. Fake engine noise. Fake diffusers. Once a car starts going down that path it loses all credibility and it’s the beginning of the end.

Absolutly agree with Chips thoughts... car companies are loossing their identities by following trends, and not keeping their face. Back in the days, every car company had its own style. Today you have to search for the Logo, to identify whos is who...

actually since cars started the markets had trends that other companies have emulated. that isn't new at all, one company would innovate the rest would copy if it sold...mustang sold, then we got the camaro, the barracuda, the AMX/Javelin. well, actually the barracuda came to market before the Mustang....but whatever. Or the bubble top cars of the 50s that were lead by the 49 Ford. Or chevy with the tri-5s, or in 58 when everything had 4 headlights for some reason. Or the GTO...or fins on cars...and on and on...trends have always been, and always will be.

I've been driving BMW's for years, but I'll never buy one with that rabbit's teeth front end grill. Right now, they've only screwed up the M3 and M4, but if they add that ugly front end design to the entire line up, I'm gone.

When I saw Chip, I always remember my childhood. This guy makes me love well-designed cars.

Well since there is room for improvement, definitely tuning companies will benefit a lot from this by helping the customers that will not like the original BMW new face..

Its the simplest thing one can do on a re-design, the fact that only 1/5 likes the M3, M4 and 4 series just proves how ugly it is. And the 4 series is just a Mustang with a pig grille, nothing else. There is no creativity going on here...

@@viktorjohansson86 He's someone with eyes and an opinion. The M3 has had a feeling that people instantly recognised and loved for decades. A radical redesign just makes the designer look ignorant of what an M3 is. It isn't terrible on its own, but it doesn't work as a successor to earlier M3s. Discarding the feeling of an M3, not to create an innovative design, but to follow trends is lazy. This design is bad in the context of a BMW M3.
The mind-virus called post-modernism has people believing everything is subjective, including design, beauty, aesthetics, and even reality itself. Which is why we have these ugly cars, and a banana duct taped to a piece of cardboard sold as art for a lot of money.

It’s true that BMW have been moving away from the traditional BMW design and engineering that made BMW cars so appealing in the not to distant past. One of the engineering changes that has not gone down very well with BMW purists was to ditch Rear wheel drive, in favour of FWD or AWD cars, I can see only one good thing about this, and that’s that the RWD BMW Cars May become collectable in years to come.
I must add that I much prefer the front end Chip Foose design, over BMW’s design.
1st of all, this is a very well shot & edited video. This man has the skills, taste and talent to make his design proposal many aftemarket auto parts suppliers should consider if they build an alternative front fascia. Thanks for this.

For a couple decades I saw BMW as the leader in their market. Sadly, I haven't thought that for several years now. Beautiful redesign, Chip!
As a former art student, I have to say that the design solution that can be seen in the 5:05 is a SCANDAL!!!
I had kept away from looking at the M3 too closely cause the front shocks the senses. Now actually looking at the rear quarter/door mismatch yuck that looks appaling! Like someone went to the car wreckers and got a different part! Looks cheap

The new M3 design looks like every other Audi now. I’ve seen them on the street and they don’t have any class, they look like any other Chinese made knock off plastic riddled car.

@@Xolition I agree, in fact, i think it’s flattering that Audi conceived an original design that BMW wished to imitate. My overarching point is that designs that are imitating lack a core original thought. Take Kia or the slew of asian brands (but not all), they are derivatives of imitation. There is no valor in imitation. There is no reason for me to love a brand that has no original thought, no soul. Don’t be different just to be different either, because that risks having no identity at all.

freaking Chip. This guys love and passion for cars and design is inspiring. I wish I could send him my 2008 IS-F and my 1992 SC400 and let him loose with the one caveat that the reliability of my cars not be messed with. I imagine he would make subtle body adjustments and change the wheels but with Chips eye for design even minor adjustments would make all the difference.

That rear fender where it doesn't fit to together. They are just emulating the Civic Type R. Which to me is a mistake or laziness in design when they don't match up.

Honestly I wouldn’t mind the new m3 design BUT two things that kill it for me are:
1: The license plate going over the grill. (It just makes it seem even more like the grill is unnecessarily large. It feels like it doesn’t serve much purpose if you can afford to just slap a license plate over it and get the same efficiency)
2: The near certainty of fake grills. Sadly this seems to be a trend now and it really kills it for me. Especially if the fake grills are large like on the new Audi R8.

i agree, the new grill looks way nicer than his design, yes hes a legend, but his visual didnt work, the lights in lower grill are just hidous, the double grill underneath just way too fussy, and the bar through middle like that does not work the grill flaring out to the middle panel looks odd, i love the bmw horizontal slats, they are bold and fit in with the aggressive large grill design, his tweaks have made the lower intakes less aggressive and smaller and thats not helped by the awful placement of the light in lower grills too. BMW keep it as it is, its bold sharp and cool.

I’m glad he mentioned the side profile of the car. The leading edge of the rear fender looks terrible.

@@kevinW826 I actually admire them because they finally had the courage to make a visible REAL change in the design, and by german premium automakers this is rarely the case because they are very-very afriad of losing customers.
BUT... this was a change definately in the ugly direction.
Chip you’re a legend, and this design is soo much better than the HORRIBLE design they went with.
It's better but he keeps referring to it as a kidney bean shape, which it's not. Kidney beans are not trapezoids.

I felt the same way when I first saw the grilles. I thought I would never like them. But almost three years later and it’s honestly a beautiful design worthy of Bmw pedigree
Your design is so much better! I think I'd shape the kidneys more like beans and less like hexagons, but I'd grow to like yours for sure.
Honestly, you know you've screwed up as a designer when Mr Foose himself says your design is terrible and doesn't fit together... A man that's always so accepting towards other designs, and you're rightfully hating this one. Love BMWs and their understated designs and the new M3/M4s are just ugly as hell, sadly. It's like the design started with an Alfa Giulia, they put Lexus lights on the back and a barn door as a grille and called it good.
He did kind of similar thing in front like one of 6 versions made by Prior Design, not bad though.. but since he also spokes about rear quarter i wish Chip Foose would re-design it from the side too so we could understand better what he was talking about and how the car will look much differently if he modify that section as well..
and that's how you fix the current monstrosity BMW has done to their cars...
