The members of Jinjer are from Ukraine and there's some pretty scary stuff happening there right now. Tatiana's growls confuse everyone. Including vocal coaches who teach growling. And even her - she doesn't know what she does, she just does what works. Probably mostly false cord, but maybe some fry sometimes though too? But seriously until she has someone do endoscope video we'll never know for sure except that it sounds awesome. My theory is that she's using false cords but pinching the false cords together so she can control the airflow and do sustained phrases. She sacrifices the pure explosiveness of Angela's growls for more flexibility.

    • @Opranius

Fry for me is a very problematic term because it includes an extreamly wide range of sounds you can make from super compressed screams to screams that have a tone in it.

My personal observation about Jinjer…and the fact that Roman rarely, if ever, plays a traditional guitar solo…I feel like all three…Vlad, Roman and Eugene…are all simultaneously playing lead parts. That’s the magic of this band. LOVE this band so much!

  • @matthewgrady3423

After listening to this band over the past few months, I’ve realized that Jinjer is the Metal version of Queen. Like Freddie Mercury, Tatiana is such an amazing vocalist with crazy range to go along with her charisma and stage presence. However, as you listen to them more, the musicianship of Roman, Vlad, and Eugene comes out more and more to where you realize how every member adds to the band as a whole like how Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon did.
As for the music itself, I was riding around with someone when “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”(My favorite Queen Song) came on the radio and they asked me who it was. After I told them, their response was that it didn’t sound like Queen to which I asked them”What does Queen sound like?” and listed a number of songs that run across a a spectrum of musical styles. The Jinjer songs I’ve become the biggest fan of fit that model. “Pisces”….”Bad Water”…”Words of Wisdom”….”Teacher, Teacher”….”Sit, Stay, Roll Over”….”Vortex”….”Who’s Gonna Be The One.” While I’m not a fan of “Judgment and Punishment”, it’s such an insanely well done song. While they’re labeled as Metalcore, they are so diverse and, like Queen was able to do a disco song with “Another One Bites The Dust”, it doesn’t sound forced or awkward.

The only reason that they’re labeled as metal core is because metal fans are very particular about labels and this is what they decided to call them.
All in all though… you’re on the money. They kind of do what they want and they do a great job of doing whatever they want

Like I said, “Judgment and Punishment” just doesn’t hit with me but all of the parts are really good and show how immensely talented the band is and their diversity. As someone just getting into them, I look forward to checking out more of their stuff and giving the songs I gave a half-assed listen to the first time around a second chance. With my comparison , I just hope they don’t have a song I hate like Queen did with “Body Language.”

Thanks for another great reaction!!! Since you like a lot of this kind of music Id love to recommend that you check out Within Temptation one day! They’re a pioneer symphonic metal band that started the same year as Nightwish with their own outstanding female vocalist, Sharon den Adel. And unlike most of the lead singers in the genre, Sharon doesn’t have classical training. Her voice is absolutely angelic though, so clear and focused. And even though she sings in her lower register more on recent albums, she can still hit some incredible high notes.

You mentioned Tatiana's switches between cleans and growls. There are two videos in particular that show this : Perennial live at Wacken 2019; and one-take vocal recording of Judgement and Punishment. The latter is great for viewing her throat and jaw, and how she holds her shoulders during her performance because the camera is on her the entire time. The former shows what she can do in front of an audience, and it is a great performance.

      - sit stay roll over
      - captain clock
      - when two empires collide
      - words of wisdom
tier3 (still good but just not mindblowing):
      - outlander
      - call me a symbol
      - copycat
      - mediator
      - scissors
      - just another
      - bad water
      - wallflower
      - no hoard of value
tier4 (decent but those are clearly nothing more than fillers for the albums):
      - all the others
      tier5 (just bad):

@@EricMcLuen love your icon, I'm waiting for my shirts to arrive. Ya, I saw them last with Suicide Silence - I'm in Canada and our covid regulations meant our venues had to be seated shows and no one could leave their seats. It was quite embarrassing for a metal show. Further, Vlad got covid too and was stuck in the U.S so they played to a drum track. They still rocked it though and I hope they make it back soon. I was excited for them to play knotfest for extra exposure as they deserve a wider audience. Corey from Slipknot paid tribute and said he'll bring them back after hopefully.

Jinjer is one of the best bands to ever do it, ive been a fan of metal music most of my life since i was 12 or 13 atleast, and Jinjer came out of nowhere 5 or 6 years ago is when i first heard them, and its just grown from there, and then pisces blew up due to youtube reacters, and they deserver it, such great people, i hope this was ends soon so they can get back to making more music and touring. this band is so special, ive seen them 3 times live and they sound just as amazing live as in the studio.

Love them and Hanabie both. Everyone stateside, if even interested in anything outside of computer-generated Pop these days, still name the tired old metal bands that are a few years shy of retirement community. Yes, I know Anthrax, Megadeth. Metallica, Slayer, Testament, all the hair metal bands, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, etc., etc. and have for several decades now. Fresh blood, please.

I like how Nemophila and Hanabie incoporate different styles of music into their sound. That Indian music feel on Nemophila's Hypnosis is great. And Hanabie can be a musical rollercoaster, basically. Changing up cutesy J pop elements, along with rap and tear your face off riffage from Matsuri. It's fun.

Edit- Ok, since you "missed" it, here it goes: this song has no chorus, every part is different and never repeated again in the song after being played the 1st time. However, each part has sort of a "hook" of its own, either a vocal or an instrumental one. Genius, simply genius. 😀

You should also take a look at any song they performed at Melburn. It's a llive recording of the playlist they did there which then they released as an album called "Alive in Melburn". The production on the recording is perfect and you can really hear and feel how locked the band is on live performances. So I would suggest, for your next Jinjer song to first check if you can find it on that album and listen to it as a live performace 😉. Also , I would recomment "Wallflower" from their latest album, it's emotional, beautiful and powerfull, one of their best songs imo.

Tatiana makes me think that we should only let non-native English speakers sing in English. She takes so many liberties with creating new syllables where they don't exist and it creates so much perfection. I love it! Julia, you're amazing! I love that you geek out about thinks you don't know super well while reminding the audience of what you don't know to make sure people don't take it as technical. I don't know if you'll ever see this but the way Tatiania gets the low growl is the same method as low bass singers use to sing subharmonics, Geoff Castaluchi has a very good explanation of how he does this as a low bass, when you know what to listen for you'll hear a power chord, like it's producing the low false fold growl and a low vocal note a 5th above at the same time, that's what gives it so much power.
