This version is a re-recording of an older song of theirs when their current drummer, Vladislav (Vlad to us fans), had just joined. They did this song over because they loved the feel that Vlad brought with his drum interpretation with the added ghost notes, etc. There is probably a good reason this reminded you of Schubert. Vlad himself is a classically trained pianist and is self taught on the drums. I am sure he is VERY familiar with Schubert and I think a LOT of his drum technique takes from his classical training.
Tatiana uses pharynx and false vocal chords for the growl - nothing to do with her vocal chords, that is why you hear no signs of strain when she goes back to her soprano voice. Different parts of her anatomy...
Song also represents the duality of human nature by its vocal styles, Pisces is associated with duality. Tatiana is a master of vocal growls, will be seeing them live next week. Amazing band.
Yes this song is a classic. Its like 3 vocal styles. One more pop oriented style, and then we have the growl and in the end of the song a moore hard rock vocal style. Amazing.
The most "classically" sounding song of Jinjer is probably "Vortex". At some parts it really sounds like something that could've been played on harpsichord or something. Recommend it 100%!
@@MikeSands-l2q well, it's rather my assume than the fact. A month ago Tatiana was interviewed by Tory Kravitz from Knotfest. And she said that: - the new album has a flavour of XIX century, romanticism, and inspired by a classical music, "like when you listen to Muse you hear a classical influences" - and then Tatiana switched to Tchaikovsky and how she's passionate about his music last monthes/year And additionally Vlad, the main composer of the band currently, in a recent interview mentioned about Tchaikovsky as well. So... there're no direct references but let's say quite a lot of allusions.
That's so funny you mentioned the drums, because Vlad (the drummer) is a classically trained pianist in the first place. So the Shubert actually might be involved =)
Too bad you didn't see the video, like most reactors (for the surprise element). The change in voice fits in with pisces being represented by 2 fish swimming in opposite directions, suggesting a split personality. I think that one part of her longs for intimacy (being caught), but another part of her is skittish due to past negative experiences at the hands of other fishermen. The scales (emeralds) being ripped away is about the barrier of resistance that must be removed before intimacy is possible.
I've read all kinds of comments and commented myseflf but this is THE most helpful explanation of the PISCES dynamic in the song that I have seen and it makes such good sense to me - thanks!
The time signatures fit the theme of duality too. First it's 3/4 and 4/4 combined, then it "separates" them by going first to a section of 3/4 and then followed by a section of 4/4. Then comes the chorus that combines them again.
A lot of her growling technique involves the false folds, and if done correctly isn’t actually harmful long-term or even painful for that matter. The easiest way to do this is to start with an exasperated sigh and then talk using that exact part of your vocal anatomy. This is how she’s able to make such a deep sound - she’s not using her true vocal cords at all, and that’s why her voice doesn’t sound any different when she transitions back. If you’ve been doing it right, it *_shouldn’t_* sound different. I strongly recommend the breakdowns The Fairy Voice Mother and Rebecca Vocal Athlete did of this song - both of them not merely understood exactly what Tatiana was doing with this song immediately but were able to demonstrate the exact technique themselves, which I always find super impressive. Great reaction. “Perennial” at Wacken (pronounced roughly between _Vocken_ and _Vahken,_ since it’s a German festival) and the “Judgement and Punishment” vocal one-take seem to be the most common suggestions for next steps after this song, and they’re both very defensible choices. Also, you’ll now get a ton of suggestions to hear Spiritbox, too. “Rule of Nines” and “Circle with Me” are the best starting places, but make sure to use the one-take vocal performances of those, too. The ending of “Circle with Me” in particular is so much more powerful in the one-take - Courtney LaPlante does things in that performance that I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone else do. Lorna Shore might still be a bit heavy for Amy, though I’m sure she’d at least appreciate their musical chops and compositional skill, but it’s a name to keep in mind for a bit further down the road. Make sure to use the music video when you do get to “Pain Remains”. It’s an essential part of the song’s impact - its storytelling is absolutely masterful. Edit: It’s also worth noting that proper mic technique can do a lot for a performance like this - her growls aren’t _necessarily_ as loud as you might expect them to be. Mind you, some harsh vocalists are known for being _incredibly_ loud. Slaughter to Prevail has a section in live performances of “Demolisher” where vocalist Alex Terrible turns off his mic and is _still_ loud enough to be heard over the band, but I’m pretty sure he’s some kind of mutant. (The dude has literally wrestled bears, and I’m pretty sure he’s wrestled alligators now, too.) Also, a couple other names of bands worth checking out as follow-ups to this one: Opeth and Otep. Very similar names, two completely different artists. Both were very large influences on Tatiana’s vocal style - the latter’s lead vocalist Otep Shamaya was the first female vocalist she heard performing growls, and she was immediately fascinated by her; Mikael Åkerfeldt is also a big influence in his ability to transition seamlessly from absolutely angelic clean singing to utterly demonic growls. I’m not familiar enough with Otep’s music to give recommendations (so whenever you do get to them, it’ll be educational for me, too), and I believe Amy has already done Opeth’s “Windowpane” (which is one of their songs without any growls). Good next steps for Opeth are “Ghost of Perdition”, “Bleak”, and “The Drapery Falls”. “Blackwater Park” is a fantastic track as well, but shouldn’t be the subject of a first reaction since it only uses clean singing for background vocals over an otherwise instrumental passage.
Agreed that both those reactions are great technical explanations by singers who know their stuff. I also completely agree that "Blackwater Park" is not a great introduction for anyone not already fully sold on harsh vocals. I really wish she'd gone with "Burden" rather than "Windowpane" for her introduction. Not that "Windowpane" is bad by any means, but "Burden" is so damn soulful, and it has that awesome ending that works great for reactions :)
Tatiana is a Pisces. You are so right about the analogy. My take is that it’s about swimming upstream looking for light and love only to be caught and killed by handsome butchers. Her live video is. . . Hmm . . . I don’t know. Should watch sometime it if ya knows what’s good for ya girlie.😊

As Vlad, the drummer, is a trained pianist the chances that he is familiar with Schubert’s “Die Forelle” are probably not that slim. The musicianship of the band deserves mentioning! So also the lyrical song writing by Tatjana. Perennial live at Wacken (for also seeing the band perform) or Judegment and Punishment one-take (for closer singing analysis) could be two great options to come. 🤗

I feel that for a time, this song with reactors became more about Tati's vocal turn than the actual song. You're the only one I know will give this song an honest assessment.
To me the genius of the song is the layers and textures - which of course includes the growls. I agree I think most people see it as a "novelty" than a piece of music in a sense. But hopefully that will make them open to more extreme genres especially within metal.

Also worth mentioning that the song was written before Vlad joined the band with a different drum part. This version was re-recorded when Vlad joined and added those Schubert like qualities. The similarity is probably not a coincidence.
They have a song callled Teacher Teacher in which she flips between vocal styles on different words in the same sentence with no transitional period. It's a great tune.
I think the best video to analyze her technique is "Judgement (& Punishment)" as it's shot in one take, up close, with good illumination and no clothes obscuring the throat.
That's true for a pure vocal technique analysis - and I think there are a lot of great vocal coaches and singers that do reactions with the focus on that. and since I love Jinjer, I watched they all more or less. But I have to say, what I like about this channel is, that it focusses more on the music in general, that it's not "just another vocal reactions" channel. To be totally honest, I'm even a little sad that there was almost nothing about the music in this particular reaction. It's a great song, it has some very interesting chord progressions, it has multiple clever changes in the time-signature. I would have loved to here some thoughts, analysis and learn some stuff about those aspects of the song too, not only about the vocals.

Try "Perennial" live at Wacken, vid included (jinjer´s pretty much ok about it)! Last piece of their set, done in the morning, Tati´s running around on stage and while sometimes you hear a little exhaustion, she still hits all the notes. "Pit Of Consciousness" live in Kiev is another great performance. Others already mentioned "Judgement (& Punishment)" - just Tati and the prerecorded track, nothing else.
I’ve seen Jinger live. I can confirm that Tatiana can and does do this live 😆 She’s also super nice as well as the rest of the band. I got to meet them during a meet and great.
I mean, it’s not thematically about “fish,” per se…it’s about duality, both in the zodiac sign and in the vocal delivery; one informing the other. Tickled to see you tackle this one…it’s largely been a reaction channel rite-of-passage! I swear I love people reacting to this song but none of them read the lyrics, and fewer understand them if they do. It's a shame, because the lyrics are excellent, and, as you say, the musical choices tie together with the lyrics thematically!
I've seen Jinjer live thrice, and it's always amazing from each member. Tatiana is absolutely magnetic as a performer. As for fish tunes in rock, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard has an album and title song "Fishing For Fishes". Psychedelic rock at its finest.
Yeah, but what is the hen and what is the egg, what is cause and effect. Tatiana almost always sing both clean and harsh in all songs. So maybe they choose Pisces because that is a match to how she sings. And OK, I know that Tatiana is a Pisces.

This song takes a lot of cues from the band Opeth, which also pairs soft, melodic singing with deep, guttural growls. I would love to see a reaction to _Dirge For November_ by that band.

Jinjer caught my attention because of their composition, initially *despite* Tatiana's extreme vocals. Even this, one of their simpler songs, starts in 7/4, goes to 6/8, then 4/4(-ish) for the growly chorus, then back into 6/8.... this is far more interesting than anything the music industry fills the charts with! The musicianship from all 4 of them is *top-tier* - Eugene is my favourite bassist out there doing the thing right now, Vlad's drumming is undeniable, Roman's riffing on guitar is the core of the sound, and Tatiana's lyric writing and vocal melody choices are super impressive over what can be very complex music written by the lads. Personally, I feel their best work is when they go completely thru-composed rather than verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus/outro formula, so I recommend giving "Vortex" and "Wallflower" a try sometime. ;)
First time I heard / saw Jinjer, was ja jaw dropping moment , in the vid'. you look, hear and everything you thought about female vocals is thrown out the window, at least that's how it was for me . Tatiana is Something else, eh!.

Yay! Another Jinjer Pisces reaction that I hadn't seen :) Me and a few others make a hobby of watching reactions to this song :) Some things I've learned about Tatiana and the band: "Heavy Vocals" a.k.a. the growl utilises a different part of the throat - the part that we use to make a heave sound. It took Tatiana 12 years to train her growl this way. But this is how she can switch cleanly between the two styles. A great one to prove she's actually making that noise is Perennial Live at Wacken. For further understanding of these harsh vocal techniques, I recommend looking up another music reaction channel by an opera singer called The Charismatic Voice. Elizabeth Zharoff have undergone her own musical discovery into heavier genres and also come into contact with some of its artists, amongst them being vocalist of the band 'Lorna Shore', Will Ramos - and he agreed to join her in doing research into harsh vocals as a practice. A very interesting video even has him visiting a vocology research centre where they conduct tests with cameras in his throat to observe his larynx.
Elizabeth is very good; in my view The Fairy Voice Mother, Lolli Wren is the best. I have watched both and Elizabeth's interviews with Tatiana as well.
Vlad, their current drummer and the drummer for this recording is a classically trained pianist. He joined the band after the album was recorded according to the video description this recording was to capture his unique take on the drums. Generally their processes starts with the guys composing and recording music, then hand off demo recordings to Tati who finds inspiration for titles and lyrics, and weaves her vocal composition into the piece. Tati says her primary concern in learning growls was to not hurt herself. She heard Otep when she was 15 (at the time of this recording she was 30). She was shocked that a woman could do that, and was inspired to learn. She had a few months of vocal instruction in her childhood but didn't have the discipline and/or inspiration to pursue singing seriously at that time. She says she's always been constantly singing though, so I suspect she was practicing those basics in her own way for years before she got serious. After her inspiration she started practicing growls while doing clean singing with basically every band that would let her pick up a mic to gain experience (Jinjer is band #8, she says at one time she was in 4 locsl bands at one time, and she had a side project after Jinjer before they had to leave their homes in eastern Ukraine due to the 2014 war). She didn't start performing with growls for about 5 years, with the band she was in before Jinjer called Prophecy which I think she started. She says when Jinjer's founding singing was moving on to other things they then members of Jinjer who had just recruited guitarist Roman who had played in a different band with her approached her because she was the only other person in their city who could growl. She was hesitant because she had her own thing but it seems they clicked and the rest is history. The mist common next step is Perennial live at Wacken to see her on stage with similar intensity and some very fast switching into cleans. Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne has more vocal tricks in one performance of a single song than I've seen her use elsewhere. Fun and interesting analysis with lots of food for thought. Subbed. I've been waiting for this reaction. My favorite band, and one of my favorite reactors. You have the sensitivity to appreciate the nuances this band bring to the table. Once you read the lyrics the metaphors become clearer. Tatiana is not only an extraordinarily talented and versatile singer, she's also an amazingly expressive poet, and a magnetic stage performer. She's a prima donna for sure. I wish you had included the video. The impact is much more intense when you can see the beautiful tiny woman roaring like a lion. It's remarkable. Yes! 'Die Forelle' features a similar theme of the fish fighting for life as it's caught by the fisherman. There are added layers here. Part of the fish WANTS to be caught--it's searching for a hook to catch on and see the sunbeam. It wants to be hooked by a handsome butcher. It wants to lose its scale armor. The video of this song also includes a number of fish/water references. The whole thing is shot with a kind of underwater amber lighting. She wears earrings that have goldfish inside them. You caught some of the musical representations of water. The drums wriggle with vitality. There are overlapping ripples in the guitar and bass parts. There's a kind of ebb and flow to the dynamics of the song. You can feel the subtle waves of volume and intensity like ripples lapping against a boat in the verse. This band write classical level compositions. I really hope you do more Jinjer! I'm here for it! And please include the video! To see "proof of concept" and start to internalize the shocking duality of Tatiana's voice, you should witness Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019 (please share the video with us--it's truly remarkable). To hear some of the compositional complexity, I'd recommend the OMV for Vortex--there's no traditional pop/rock song structure of verse/chorus etc, it's an evolving series of intensifying parts that swirls around a central gravity well of a part. It's a black hole of sound waiting to suck you in! Or try Mediator, a classical composition with heavy metal instrumentation. It's not just a rehash of historical classical themes and styles, either--it's an original expression on a par with a Ravel or a Copland--a complete reimagining.
Tatiana has named one of her biggest singing influences to be Gwen Stefani, and it's easy to hear that in Tatiana's cleaner vocals. But the way she jumps back and forth is so impressive. By the way, there is another metal song that is fish-related... It's about mermaid murder, and it's called "Murmaider." Written by the (fictional-ish) band Dethklok.

If you look at the video you will see that it is the same person. You will also see that she do the harsh vocals without any strain, its easy for her. She is not harming her voice, mainly because she is not using her normal vocal cords, but also because she is no adding any strain.
Pisces is the astrological symbol with the 2 fish swimming in a circle. Also has very similar meanings to the Ying-Yang or duality. Opposites. The song is about her inner struggle with being sad or angry inside and happy outside. She's battling her inner beings inside and doesn't know which will come out on top. Sang and written with the idea of duality in mind. Light singing with more of a lighter guitar and drums then the opposite with the screaming and heavier music. Towards the end of the song, two musical styles come together as one, symbolizing equilibrium or balance.
Tatiana Shmayluk is the BEST female metal vocalist. Love this band. Saw them live twice. They CRUSH IT on stage. Flawless execution of instrumentation...no mistakes. Fine tuned in synchronicity, and Tatiana is just icing on the cake for a band with phenomenal musicians. They're better live than in studio. Vlad, their drummer, is a classically trained pianist, so I'm sure he not only has heard of the musical piece you spoke of, but can also probably play it on a piano.
its odd being a big fan of both metal and classical i barely bat en eyelid when someone whips out the screamo mid song male or female, i cant do it well but singing along to stuff like this for years and training my voice a little lets me do it, floor jansen from nightwish can do it but she can also sing a respectable o mio babino caro, there are many female and male singers in the rock world that do this sort of thing and if you want more info on it the charismatic voice youtube channel has an opera singer doing a scientific reasearch study on will ramos from lorna shore where they pop cameras in his throat and electrodes on his neck and pop him in an mri to try to figure out exactly how one makes these noises safely as he does. its quite interesting to watch. i would reccomend judgment and punishment by jinjer and to watch the video to see her doing her thing

As you've probably learned by now, from the comments, Tati doesn't use her (true) vocal cords at all in performing the extreme 'metal scream' technique. She put in a lot of time & effort, including significantly building up her core (diaphragmatic) strength, in order to do what she does in a very healthy way. BTW, if you go back far enough in time, we're all descended from fish ( just in the highly unlikely case that you were not already well aware of that particular bit of trivia). And, finally, in their song, "Teacher, Teacher", she switches instantly, within one line of verse, back & forth, from one vocal technique, to the other. As one professional vocal coach commented about her: "She is a vocal beast. -- do not get into an argument w/ her !"

Trivium’s Becoming the Dragon tells of the legend of the Koi fish that climbed a waterfall and became a mighty dragon. Pretty awesome. Has one of the best bass solo’s I’ve heard in a modern metal band.
As a metalhead, you’d be surprised how many of us love classical music. We may not be able to match songs to composers easily but I’m sure most have listened to a surprising amount of classical music, especially if they also play an instrument.
Tatiana is unbelievable. I've been following them for years, and I'm still blown away by how easily and quickly she switches between vocal styles. Jinjer doesn't always make my favorite songs, but I'm consistently impressed by their craft and prowess. They've earned their place among the great Metal bands, as far as I'm concerned, and they're still young!
"Perennial" is a good song from Jinjer to listen to the live version. And another singer with incredible voice range and emotion is Kyo from Dir En Grey. I just love how playful he is with amazing techniques and beign all over the place with harsh vocals to falsettos and all there is in between. He's just GOOD.
You need the video, Tatiana is a very petite female with a gigantic voice range. you are only hearing a small sample of what her voice can do. Jinjer is basically a jazz band that plays metal. Jinjer has also experimented with reggae. The drummer for the band is a classicly trained pianist, so it is quite possible that classical music did play a part in the composition. Jinjer plays in and outside the box. Tatiana is a world-class growler. The songs are usually composed in Russian and then translated into English. The harsh vocals are called false fold vocals, she dose not engage the vocal cords when she growls.
The astrological sign Pisces is very tied to the idea of duality - the idea that humans are complicated in their nature, and seldom have only one motive or emotional state. Tatiana is a Pisces, and she seems to strongly identify with that dualistic view - putting a great deal of passion into the line "One being brings life, the other runs for death!" The imagery of the fish for Pisces is also strongly referenced her, of course - will Tatiana escape, or be caught in the net? Will she remain Neptune's Child, or be laid out on the table with her emerald scales ripped away? The duality is emphasized in the music as much as the lyrics, also - with the flowing, watery verses contrasted with the harsh reality of the chorus! One thing that I have noticed about Tatiana's "harsh" vocals that seldom gets mentioned is exemplified well in that final "a-waaaay" - if you listen closely, you can hear that she actually gets an overtone! In the harsh vocal style, the "note" is indistinct: rather than being a single peak frequency with very subdued harmonics above and below that frequency, the peak is replaced by a kind of plateau - a range of frequencies at very close to the same level. Above and below are still harmonics, but they also are less subdued, giving the noisy, distorted feel. Still, if one listens carefully, there *is* a peak: not prominent, but present. In that final scream, Tatiana develops not only a descending gliss of that peak, but the overtone a 5th above is also a secondary peak!
Great comment. Yes, it's remarkable what Tatiana can do with her screams. The ability to layer pitched overtones with the atonal false fold sounds is unusual. Her smooth gliss transitions from "low" to "high" screams are again notable. There's a whole range of subtechniques that makes up a palette or toolkit of colors that she can paint with. An astonishing range of expression.
Heavy metal and classical music share a fan base. Some think it's weird. Those who are part of both fan bases, such as myself, understand completely. This song is among the best to bridge that gap, and drive a formerly classical-only fan to delve deeper, and find a rich new world of music.
Re: the vocals not sounding like they come from the same person, harsh vocals don't use the true vocal folds so they aren't affected by the vocal folds being thickened by testosterone. So there's much less audible difference between men and women doing it than clean singing.
Yep, it's 100% Tatiana on vocals. Go check out the in studio live version of this song to see. She is a tremendous singer, and thankfully female singers who can sing and growl are becoming much more common these days. A few others I particularly dig are Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox), Mayu (Nemophila), Lauren Babic (Red Handed Denial), and Yukina (Hanabie)
Vocal coaches reacting to this have all said she's doing this without harming her voice. The growls aren't actually produced with the vocal chords, but with the false folds (basically think of how you clear your throat, it's similar to that, but a little different).

Hi there, thank you for the review from non-metal point of view. Tatiana is Pisces herself, so the song is very personal. Tatiana is the only singer in the band, and she is incredibly talented. I saw them live twice, and both shows were among the most entertaining ones I attended in my life
I'm glad you noticed the common theme between this song and Schubert's 'The Trout' (based on Schubart's poem), both likening women to fish, which men callously catch and exploit. I've mentioned it in other comments, but you're the first Reviewer/Reactor to have spotted it. No, Tatiana is not using 'vocal fry' for the full growl/scream. Fry happens when the breath pressure is insufficient to fully vibrate the (true) vocal chords so their vibrations lose coherence. For the screams, Tatiana is relaxing her TVFs and instead using her false vocal chords (aka laryngeal folds), which lie above them, to create an untuned 'roar' that she then shapes orally. Thus, her TVFs remain unstressed and her conventional 'clean' voice tones are unaffected. She can switch from roar to clean voice in the middle of a line, as you can see if you watch the video of her performance of 'Perennial' at Wacken 2019 , for example.

Elizabeth Zharoff (UA-cam: the Charismatic Voice) has some very good videos where she delves into what it takes to produce this metal scream healthily.
There's "Aquarium" from "Carnival of the animals" and "St Anthony's sermon to the fishes". The latter maybe resembles this song a little in structure with lighter a lighter sounding section alternating with a contrasting bombastic section.
That is so cool that you connected Vlad’s percussion to piano. He is a classically trained pianist. He trained himself drums and his whole kit is set up low and level, perhaps more like a piano.
To be fair, once you're familiar with harsh metal vocals, especially growls which are (usually) pretty deep and, well, growly, it doesn't surprise you anymore. The technique for pretty much all harsh vocals includes using the false vocal cords insted of (or along with, if you want to add some more voice and melody) the regular cords. I personally find growling a bit more aggressive than most other harsh singing techniques, because I need to use more air and pressure to get it done. However, once you know how, it's safe to use (which will be a relief to many) and quite fun. I think chances are good that many people are familiar with "Die Forelle" by Schubert. If nothing else, it featured in the second Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr. in the title role. Plus it is one of the better-known pieces of the time in general.
Lol Jinjer is ukrainian proggy djent groove metal with complex time-signature maze, polyrhythms and multi-genre blending. They are one of the most talented 4-pieces ever. Elizabeth Zharoff is collaborating with Tatiana and several other growl/screamers on a study to understand how harsh vocals are created without damage to vocal chords. I think we are about to experience a resurgence of throat singing that we haven't heard since the Romans were being run out of Britain and northern Europe with their tails between their legs.
Since you did Jinjer without any issues about the growling then it's time to do one of the originals that inspired them- Opeth. One of the greatest metal bands of all time, they have a new album coming out, but I think you should always start with the classics- "Ghost of Perdition" for example.
Would love to see you react to Imminence!! Any of Eddie Berg's One Take videos are great; he sings and screams while playing the violin. The one takes for "Desolation" and "Continuum" are my favorites.

It's interesting that you focused a little on the percussion because their drummer is very good, and if I recall correctly, part of the reason for this live, in studio video was in part to showcase his talent, but the vocalist, Tatiana, kind of stole the show and got all of the attention.
I just realized now that the time signatures in this song also follow the theme of duality. The verse is 3/4 and 4/4 always together, then it "separates" them by going first to a section of 3/4 and then followed by a section of 4/4. Then comes the chorus that combines them again.
Excellent insight! That makes total sense. I feel like the chorus is in 4/4, but the way they play it and emphasize it, it might as well be a single measure of 20/8, which is then repeated.

The song is about the duality associated with the astrological sign of Pisces. They tend to have a side that lives in a fantasy world and another that is more serious. The singer is a Pisces herself. Her name is Tatiana Schmayluk. Vlad is the drummer who was a concert pianist. Eugene on bass and Roman on guitar. The guys in the band a very much involved with musical theory. Tati writes the lyrics and usually at the last minute before recording. She says she works best under presure. ❤🤍💙
This version is a re-recording of an older song of theirs when their current drummer, Vladislav (Vlad to us fans), had just joined. They did this song over because they loved the feel that Vlad brought with his drum interpretation with the added ghost notes, etc. There is probably a good reason this reminded you of Schubert. Vlad himself is a classically trained pianist and is self taught on the drums. I am sure he is VERY familiar with Schubert and I think a LOT of his drum technique takes from his classical training.
I still occasionally pull up Vlad's Rachmaninov - Prelude in C# minor (Op. 3 No. 2) performance.

The most "classically" sounding song of Jinjer is probably "Vortex". At some parts it really sounds like something that could've been played on harpsichord or something. Recommend it 100%!

A month ago Tatiana was interviewed by Tory Kravitz from Knotfest. And she said that:
- the new album has a flavour of XIX century, romanticism, and inspired by a classical music, "like when you listen to Muse you hear a classical influences"
- and then Tatiana switched to Tchaikovsky and how she's passionate about his music last monthes/year
And additionally Vlad, the main composer of the band currently, in a recent interview mentioned about Tchaikovsky as well.
So... there're no direct references but let's say quite a lot of allusions.

Their drummer, Vlad Ulasevish, is also a classically trained pianist. There's a great video of him playing Prelude in C Minor by Rachmaninov.
Too bad you didn't see the video, like most reactors (for the surprise element). The change in voice fits in with pisces being represented by 2 fish swimming in opposite directions, suggesting a split personality. I think that one part of her longs for intimacy (being caught), but another part of her is skittish due to past negative experiences at the hands of other fishermen. The scales (emeralds) being ripped away is about the barrier of resistance that must be removed before intimacy is possible.
I've read all kinds of comments and commented myseflf but this is THE most helpful explanation of the PISCES dynamic in the song that I have seen and it makes such good sense to me - thanks!

A lot of her growling technique involves the false folds, and if done correctly isn’t actually harmful long-term or even painful for that matter. The easiest way to do this is to start with an exasperated sigh and then talk using that exact part of your vocal anatomy. This is how she’s able to make such a deep sound - she’s not using her true vocal cords at all, and that’s why her voice doesn’t sound any different when she transitions back. If you’ve been doing it right, it *_shouldn’t_* sound different.
I strongly recommend the breakdowns The Fairy Voice Mother and Rebecca Vocal Athlete did of this song - both of them not merely understood exactly what Tatiana was doing with this song immediately but were able to demonstrate the exact technique themselves, which I always find super impressive.
Great reaction. “Perennial” at Wacken (pronounced roughly between _Vocken_ and _Vahken,_ since it’s a German festival) and the “Judgement and Punishment” vocal one-take seem to be the most common suggestions for next steps after this song, and they’re both very defensible choices.
Also, you’ll now get a ton of suggestions to hear Spiritbox, too. “Rule of Nines” and “Circle with Me” are the best starting places, but make sure to use the one-take vocal performances of those, too. The ending of “Circle with Me” in particular is so much more powerful in the one-take - Courtney LaPlante does things in that performance that I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone else do.
Lorna Shore might still be a bit heavy for Amy, though I’m sure she’d at least appreciate their musical chops and compositional skill, but it’s a name to keep in mind for a bit further down the road. Make sure to use the music video when you do get to “Pain Remains”. It’s an essential part of the song’s impact - its storytelling is absolutely masterful.
Edit: It’s also worth noting that proper mic technique can do a lot for a performance like this - her growls aren’t _necessarily_ as loud as you might expect them to be. Mind you, some harsh vocalists are known for being _incredibly_ loud. Slaughter to Prevail has a section in live performances of “Demolisher” where vocalist Alex Terrible turns off his mic and is _still_ loud enough to be heard over the band, but I’m pretty sure he’s some kind of mutant. (The dude has literally wrestled bears, and I’m pretty sure he’s wrestled alligators now, too.)
Also, a couple other names of bands worth checking out as follow-ups to this one: Opeth and Otep. Very similar names, two completely different artists. Both were very large influences on Tatiana’s vocal style - the latter’s lead vocalist Otep Shamaya was the first female vocalist she heard performing growls, and she was immediately fascinated by her; Mikael Åkerfeldt is also a big influence in his ability to transition seamlessly from absolutely angelic clean singing to utterly demonic growls. I’m not familiar enough with Otep’s music to give recommendations (so whenever you do get to them, it’ll be educational for me, too), and I believe Amy has already done Opeth’s “Windowpane” (which is one of their songs without any growls). Good next steps for Opeth are “Ghost of Perdition”, “Bleak”, and “The Drapery Falls”. “Blackwater Park” is a fantastic track as well, but shouldn’t be the subject of a first reaction since it only uses clean singing for background vocals over an otherwise instrumental passage.
Agreed that both those reactions are great technical explanations by singers who know their stuff.
I also completely agree that "Blackwater Park" is not a great introduction for anyone not already fully sold on harsh vocals. I really wish she'd gone with "Burden" rather than "Windowpane" for her introduction. Not that "Windowpane" is bad by any means, but "Burden" is so damn soulful, and it has that awesome ending that works great for reactions :)

To me the genius of the song is the layers and textures - which of course includes the growls. I agree I think most people see it as a "novelty" than a piece of music in a sense. But hopefully that will make them open to more extreme genres especially within metal.

They have a song callled Teacher Teacher in which she flips between vocal styles on different words in the same sentence with no transitional period. It's a great tune.
I think the best video to analyze her technique is "Judgement (& Punishment)" as it's shot in one take, up close, with good illumination and no clothes obscuring the throat.
That's true for a pure vocal technique analysis - and I think there are a lot of great vocal coaches and singers that do reactions with the focus on that. and since I love Jinjer, I watched they all more or less.
But I have to say, what I like about this channel is, that it focusses more on the music in general, that it's not "just another vocal reactions" channel.
To be totally honest, I'm even a little sad that there was almost nothing about the music in this particular reaction. It's a great song, it has some very interesting chord progressions, it has multiple clever changes in the time-signature. I would have loved to here some thoughts, analysis and learn some stuff about those aspects of the song too, not only about the vocals.

Yeah, but what is the hen and what is the egg, what is cause and effect. Tatiana almost always sing both clean and harsh in all songs. So maybe they choose Pisces because that is a match to how she sings. And OK, I know that Tatiana is a Pisces.

This song takes a lot of cues from the band Opeth, which also pairs soft, melodic singing with deep, guttural growls. I would love to see a reaction to _Dirge For November_ by that band.
It should be great to see her reaction on a classic opeth song, where they show both of their faces! And I would die for an arcturus reaction from her, it's a shame nobody asked for it...
Jinjer caught my attention because of their composition, initially *despite* Tatiana's extreme vocals. Even this, one of their simpler songs, starts in 7/4, goes to 6/8, then 4/4(-ish) for the growly chorus, then back into 6/8.... this is far more interesting than anything the music industry fills the charts with! The musicianship from all 4 of them is *top-tier* - Eugene is my favourite bassist out there doing the thing right now, Vlad's drumming is undeniable, Roman's riffing on guitar is the core of the sound, and Tatiana's lyric writing and vocal melody choices are super impressive over what can be very complex music written by the lads.
Personally, I feel their best work is when they go completely thru-composed rather than verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus/outro formula, so I recommend giving "Vortex" and "Wallflower" a try sometime. ;)

Yay! Another Jinjer Pisces reaction that I hadn't seen :) Me and a few others make a hobby of watching reactions to this song :) Some things I've learned about Tatiana and the band: "Heavy Vocals" a.k.a. the growl utilises a different part of the throat - the part that we use to make a heave sound. It took Tatiana 12 years to train her growl this way. But this is how she can switch cleanly between the two styles. A great one to prove she's actually making that noise is Perennial Live at Wacken. Welcome to Jinjer!
For further understanding of these harsh vocal techniques, I recommend looking up another music reaction channel by an opera singer called The Charismatic Voice. Elizabeth Zharoff have undergone her own musical discovery into heavier genres and also come into contact with some of its artists, amongst them being vocalist of the band 'Lorna Shore', Will Ramos - and he agreed to join her in doing research into harsh vocals as a practice. A very interesting video even has him visiting a vocology research centre where they conduct tests with cameras in his throat to observe his larynx.
Elizabeth is very good; in my view The Fairy Voice Mother, Lolli Wren is the best. I have watched both and Elizabeth's interviews with Tatiana as well.
You just met the most amount of metal you can squeeze into a tiny package. She's a monster! Roman, Vlad & Eugene are magnificent.
Vlad, their current drummer and the drummer for this recording is a classically trained pianist. He joined the band after the album was recorded according to the video description this recording was to capture his unique take on the drums. Generally their processes starts with the guys composing and recording music, then hand off demo recordings to Tati who finds inspiration for titles and lyrics, and weaves her vocal composition into the piece.
Tati says her primary concern in learning growls was to not hurt herself. She heard Otep when she was 15 (at the time of this recording she was 30). She was shocked that a woman could do that, and was inspired to learn. She had a few months of vocal instruction in her childhood but didn't have the discipline and/or inspiration to pursue singing seriously at that time. She says she's always been constantly singing though, so I suspect she was practicing those basics in her own way for years before she got serious. After her inspiration she started practicing growls while doing clean singing with basically every band that would let her pick up a mic to gain experience (Jinjer is band #8, she says at one time she was in 4 locsl bands at one time, and she had a side project after Jinjer before they had to leave their homes in eastern Ukraine due to the 2014 war). She didn't start performing with growls for about 5 years, with the band she was in before Jinjer called Prophecy which I think she started. She says when Jinjer's founding singing was moving on to other things they then members of Jinjer who had just recruited guitarist Roman who had played in a different band with her approached her because she was the only other person in their city who could growl. She was hesitant because she had her own thing but it seems they clicked and the rest is history.
The mist common next step is Perennial live at Wacken to see her on stage with similar intensity and some very fast switching into cleans. Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne has more vocal tricks in one performance of a single song than I've seen her use elsewhere.

Great reaction, Amy! As soon as I saw this listed, I had to jump on it. First-time reactions to Pisces are a secret passion for me. If you get a chance to watch the video, it is even more jarring. Tatiana is a small, almost delicate looking woman, so it's always a shock.

I've been waiting for this reaction. My favorite band, and one of my favorite reactors. You have the sensitivity to appreciate the nuances this band bring to the table. Once you read the lyrics the metaphors become clearer. Tatiana is not only an extraordinarily talented and versatile singer, she's also an amazingly expressive poet, and a magnetic stage performer. She's a prima donna for sure.
I wish you had included the video. The impact is much more intense when you can see the beautiful tiny woman roaring like a lion. It's remarkable.
Yes! 'Die Forelle' features a similar theme of the fish fighting for life as it's caught by the fisherman. There are added layers here. Part of the fish WANTS to be caught--it's searching for a hook to catch on and see the sunbeam. It wants to be hooked by a handsome butcher. It wants to lose its scale armor.
The video of this song also includes a number of fish/water references. The whole thing is shot with a kind of underwater amber lighting. She wears earrings that have goldfish inside them. You caught some of the musical representations of water. The drums wriggle with vitality. There are overlapping ripples in the guitar and bass parts. There's a kind of ebb and flow to the dynamics of the song. You can feel the subtle waves of volume and intensity like ripples lapping against a boat in the verse.
This band write classical level compositions. I really hope you do more Jinjer! I'm here for it! And please include the video! To see "proof of concept" and start to internalize the shocking duality of Tatiana's voice, you should witness Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019 (please share the video with us--it's truly remarkable). To hear some of the compositional complexity, I'd recommend the OMV for Vortex--there's no traditional pop/rock song structure of verse/chorus etc, it's an evolving series of intensifying parts that swirls around a central gravity well of a part. It's a black hole of sound waiting to suck you in!
Or try Mediator, a classical composition with heavy metal instrumentation. It's not just a rehash of historical classical themes and styles, either--it's an original expression on a par with a Ravel or a Copland--a complete reimagining.

Tatiana has named one of her biggest singing influences to be Gwen Stefani, and it's easy to hear that in Tatiana's cleaner vocals. But the way she jumps back and forth is so impressive.

If you look at the video you will see that it is the same person. You will also see that she do the harsh vocals without any strain, its easy for her. She is not harming her voice, mainly because she is not using her normal vocal cords, but also because she is no adding any strain.

Love this band. Saw them live twice. They CRUSH IT on stage. Flawless execution of instrumentation...no mistakes. Fine tuned in synchronicity, and Tatiana is just icing on the cake for a band with phenomenal musicians. They're better live than in studio.
Vlad, their drummer, is a classically trained pianist, so I'm sure he not only has heard of the musical piece you spoke of, but can also probably play it on a piano.
its odd being a big fan of both metal and classical i barely bat en eyelid when someone whips out the screamo mid song male or female, i cant do it well but singing along to stuff like this for years and training my voice a little lets me do it, floor jansen from nightwish can do it but she can also sing a respectable o mio babino caro, there are many female and male singers in the rock world that do this sort of thing and if you want more info on it the charismatic voice youtube channel has an opera singer doing a scientific reasearch study on will ramos from lorna shore where they pop cameras in his throat and electrodes on his neck and pop him in an mri to try to figure out exactly how one makes these noises safely as he does. its quite interesting to watch. i would reccomend judgment and punishment by jinjer and to watch the video to see her doing her thing

As you've probably learned by now, from the comments, Tati doesn't use her (true) vocal cords at all in performing the extreme 'metal scream' technique. She put in a lot of time & effort, including significantly
building up her core (diaphragmatic) strength, in order to do what she does in a very healthy way.
BTW, if you go back far enough in time, we're all descended from fish ( just in the highly unlikely case that you were not already well aware of that particular bit of trivia).
And, finally, in their song, "Teacher, Teacher", she switches instantly, within one line of verse, back & forth, from one vocal technique, to the other. As one professional vocal coach commented about her: "She is a vocal beast. -- do not get into an argument w/ her !"

Trivium’s Becoming the Dragon tells of the legend of the Koi fish that climbed a waterfall and became a mighty dragon. Pretty awesome. Has one of the best bass solo’s I’ve heard in a modern metal band.
As a metalhead, you’d be surprised how many of us love classical music. We may not be able to match songs to composers easily but I’m sure most have listened to a surprising amount of classical music, especially if they also play an instrument.
Tatiana is unbelievable. I've been following them for years, and I'm still blown away by how easily and quickly she switches between vocal styles. Jinjer doesn't always make my favorite songs, but I'm consistently impressed by their craft and prowess. They've earned their place among the great Metal bands, as far as I'm concerned, and they're still young!

"Perennial" is a good song from Jinjer to listen to the live version. And another singer with incredible voice range and emotion is Kyo from Dir En Grey. I just love how playful he is with amazing techniques and beign all over the place with harsh vocals to falsettos and all there is in between. He's just GOOD.
You need the video, Tatiana is a very petite female with a gigantic voice range. you are only hearing a small sample of what her voice can do. Jinjer is basically a jazz band that plays metal. Jinjer has also experimented with reggae. The drummer for the band is a classicly trained pianist, so it is quite possible that classical music did play a part in the composition. Jinjer plays in and outside the box. Tatiana is a world-class growler. The songs are usually composed in Russian and then translated into English. The harsh vocals are called false fold vocals, she dose not engage the vocal cords when she growls.
Pretty sure all the founding members are still in the band. I just watched an interview with them.

The astrological sign Pisces is very tied to the idea of duality - the idea that humans are complicated in their nature, and seldom have only one motive or emotional state. Tatiana is a Pisces, and she seems to strongly identify with that dualistic view - putting a great deal of passion into the line "One being brings life, the other runs for death!" The imagery of the fish for Pisces is also strongly referenced her, of course - will Tatiana escape, or be caught in the net? Will she remain Neptune's Child, or be laid out on the table with her emerald scales ripped away?
The duality is emphasized in the music as much as the lyrics, also - with the flowing, watery verses contrasted with the harsh reality of the chorus!
One thing that I have noticed about Tatiana's "harsh" vocals that seldom gets mentioned is exemplified well in that final "a-waaaay" - if you listen closely, you can hear that she actually gets an overtone! In the harsh vocal style, the "note" is indistinct: rather than being a single peak frequency with very subdued harmonics above and below that frequency, the peak is replaced by a kind of plateau - a range of frequencies at very close to the same level. Above and below are still harmonics, but they also are less subdued, giving the noisy, distorted feel. Still, if one listens carefully, there *is* a peak: not prominent, but present. In that final scream, Tatiana develops not only a descending gliss of that peak, but the overtone a 5th above is also a secondary peak!
Great comment. Yes, it's remarkable what Tatiana can do with her screams. The ability to layer pitched overtones with the atonal false fold sounds is unusual. Her smooth gliss transitions from "low" to "high" screams are again notable. There's a whole range of subtechniques that makes up a palette or toolkit of colors that she can paint with. An astonishing range of expression.
Heavy metal and classical music share a fan base. Some think it's weird. Those who are part of both fan bases, such as myself, understand completely.
This song is among the best to bridge that gap, and drive a formerly classical-only fan to delve deeper, and find a rich new world of music.
Pisces as the song have 2 sides. One calm cool goes with the flow. The other we can get pushed to anger. Like how the song goes from quiet to loud

Re: the vocals not sounding like they come from the same person, harsh vocals don't use the true vocal folds so they aren't affected by the vocal folds being thickened by testosterone. So there's much less audible difference between men and women doing it than clean singing.
Yep, it's 100% Tatiana on vocals. Go check out the in studio live version of this song to see. She is a tremendous singer, and thankfully female singers who can sing and growl are becoming much more common these days. A few others I particularly dig are Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox), Mayu (Nemophila), Lauren Babic (Red Handed Denial), and Yukina (Hanabie)
Vocal coaches reacting to this have all said she's doing this without harming her voice. The growls aren't actually produced with the vocal chords, but with the false folds (basically think of how you clear your throat, it's similar to that, but a little different).

I'm glad you noticed the common theme between this song and Schubert's 'The Trout' (based on Schubart's poem), both likening women to fish, which men callously catch and exploit. I've mentioned it in other comments, but you're the first Reviewer/Reactor to have spotted it.
No, Tatiana is not using 'vocal fry' for the full growl/scream. Fry happens when the breath pressure is insufficient to fully vibrate the (true) vocal chords so their vibrations lose coherence. For the screams, Tatiana is relaxing her TVFs and instead using her false vocal chords (aka laryngeal folds), which lie above them, to create an untuned 'roar' that she then shapes orally. Thus, her TVFs remain unstressed and her conventional 'clean' voice tones are unaffected. She can switch from roar to clean voice in the middle of a line, as you can see if you watch the video of her performance of 'Perennial' at Wacken 2019 , for example.

Elizabeth Zharoff (UA-cam: the Charismatic Voice) has some very good videos where she delves into what it takes to produce this metal scream healthily.
There's "Aquarium" from "Carnival of the animals" and "St Anthony's sermon to the fishes". The latter maybe resembles this song a little in structure with lighter a lighter sounding section alternating with a contrasting bombastic section.
That is so cool that you connected Vlad’s percussion to piano. He is a classically trained pianist. He trained himself drums and his whole kit is set up low and level, perhaps more like a piano.
To be fair, once you're familiar with harsh metal vocals, especially growls which are (usually) pretty deep and, well, growly, it doesn't surprise you anymore. The technique for pretty much all harsh vocals includes using the false vocal cords insted of (or along with, if you want to add some more voice and melody) the regular cords.
I personally find growling a bit more aggressive than most other harsh singing techniques, because I need to use more air and pressure to get it done. However, once you know how, it's safe to use (which will be a relief to many) and quite fun.
I think chances are good that many people are familiar with "Die Forelle" by Schubert. If nothing else, it featured in the second Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr. in the title role. Plus it is one of the better-known pieces of the time in general.
Lol Jinjer is ukrainian proggy djent groove metal with complex time-signature maze, polyrhythms and multi-genre blending. They are one of the most talented 4-pieces ever. Tati is one of the best overall metal vocalists and lyricists in the business.

Elizabeth Zharoff is collaborating with Tatiana and several other growl/screamers on a study to understand how harsh vocals are created without damage to vocal chords. I think we are about to experience a resurgence of throat singing that we haven't heard since the Romans were being run out of Britain and northern Europe with their tails between their legs.
Since you did Jinjer without any issues about the growling then it's time to do one of the originals that inspired them- Opeth. One of the greatest metal bands of all time, they have a new album coming out, but I think you should always start with the classics- "Ghost of Perdition" for example.

It's interesting that you focused a little on the percussion because their drummer is very good, and if I recall correctly, part of the reason for this live, in studio video was in part to showcase his talent, but the vocalist, Tatiana, kind of stole the show and got all of the attention.
I just realized now that the time signatures in this song also follow the theme of duality. The verse is 3/4 and 4/4 always together, then it "separates" them by going first to a section of 3/4 and then followed by a section of 4/4. Then comes the chorus that combines them again.
Excellent insight! That makes total sense. I feel like the chorus is in 4/4, but the way they play it and emphasize it, it might as well be a single measure of 20/8, which is then repeated.
