This is a band coming back to life after a terrible tragedy.Nicky's head is down, but Sean is defiant and James is starting to show the form of the brilliant frontman he became.Loved No Surface All Feeling! Very brave.
There's a void where Richey should be that will never be filled. But that being said, the Manics have stood the test of time and remained an integral and influential act even to this day.
There seems to be two "Siamese" bands.....Ritchie Era and the post Ritchie era.... As much as I liked EMG it seemed........ Empty..... Then to see the Manics, fiercely intelligent, politically savvy, with an agenda....... To be "flavour of the month" , the Adidas clad masses at gigs, joined on stage by Liam Gallagher.....the polar opposite of Ritchie. Some bands can't exist without a member.... Led Zep, Joy Division without Ian..... Queen with no Mercury.... And while it was no secret that JDB'NW, SM was the "potatoes" of the bands, Ritchie was the flavour. The conceptualist, the muse ,the "ideas man".....
@@stevenstratton4785 I agree but it was reported he did actually like Oasis. Maybe it was because of their vacuous nature that his mind could turn off 🤷🏻♂️
Fabulous performance. As has been said, when you know what they were coming to terms with the signs of pain being slowly overcome seem visible. But what makes the Manics great, apart from consistently brilliant songwriting with Richey and afterwards is their sheer musicianship and commitment. The keys are filling out the sound just a little, but overwhelmingly its being produced by three instruments and a voice. One aspect of JDB’s brilliance as a guitarist is that he can play quite complex arpeggiated lines while singing an equally complex vocal. And yet there’s no solemnity, just serious passion. Glorious.
@@stevelogan1699 I collect autographs.. took it seriously from earlier this year, already bagged Peter Hook of Joy Division, Mark Burgess of The Chameleons, Nigel Clark of Dodgy, Manic street preachers and Simon Raymonde of Cocteau twins! more on the way too!
I taped this when it was on and must have watched it hundreds of times, amazing to think it's one of the first times they'd have played Design considering how many times they've played it live since.
It is a great upload. Well done. Amongst the best White Room sequences around. I was actually there, working. So its great to see a good bit of Music history.
nobody was jumpin around to design because it dint hit the charts until after this then we all went lets drink as much as we can in 96 we had it all its just the euro that let us down but the sun shined that summer
I remember seeing this at the time, a great performance. Looking back it seems like there was a long time between The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go, but it was only around 2 years or so. That kinda blew me away. I think James still had some of the Holy Bible-era venom during this era, he seemed for want of a better word quite unapproachable. Still, understandable really, this was still hot on the heels of the whole heavy Holy Bible period/Richey disappearing. I'd suppose the band getting massive after that would be bittersweet. (The intro the presenter gave is reason enough to get a bit annoyed..).
Any idea what/who is hidden behind the screen to Sean's right? I'm guessing the amps/cabs, but I'm sure I saw a glimpse of a person there too. Probably no great mystery, just curious.
I thought he was using a Boss DD3 or some similar Delay Pedal or maybe a Roland Space echo. Didn't think about a loop station pedal. Only a few months after this I see MSP at TFI Friday doing Kevin Carter and James had no pedals on the floor in front of him, his guitar tech was hidden behind his amps changing his guitar sound for him.
for 23 yrs I have never seen the family resemblance between sean and james - but at 6:24 -for a few seconds you can see it ....especially if you freeze the image .
James is his middle name. He went by Richey James early on as an allusion to Rusty James in Rumblefish. I presume he only started using that spelling because it looked closer to Rusty than Richie or Ritchie. Or Richard.

Nicky Wire has one of the purist smiles I've ever seen! It seems to radiate right from his heart! ❤️
No surface all feeling is one of their best songs. Very underrated

Remember watching this really clearly. Went to my first MSP gig in 1996 age 12, going to my 42nd in September age 29. Can't wait!!!! Xx
This is just 2 years after 94 HB era - and it feels like ten years has passed in between HB and EMG.
James voice seem to have after each album
James is INCREDIBLE here. One of the greatest frontmen of all time.
And i have his signature.
Free.
Preacher Muzik-man As in Paul Rodgers?

The white room, a million times better than later with Jools Holland. Be great to have it back on Channel 4.
Love that smile of Nicky's when the crowd show their appreciation at 08.53/4
Top of their game here.
The best show on TV of my youth.
Top drummer in Sean Moore. and i have been liked by him on Facebook 2! 😉😊
Amazing performance 😍😍😍
Awesome drumming on "No Surface All Feeling"

The guy on the Keyboards is called Nick Naysmyth - for those asking.

Probably a guitar/drum tech
Can we talk about JDB nailing the loop pedal during Surface?

Its just the keyboardist doing the riff isn't it? Its not even the same tone to be a loop of the guitar

Is there a version of this song without strings?
Alternative FM
How embarrassing are those people dancing to the songs though.. Wow
